Dear Sukhvir Hundal and Karamveer Hundal:

Peel District • School Board ........,

5650 Hurontario Street Mississauga, ON, Canada L5R 1C6 ! 905.890.1010 1.800.668.1146 f 905.890.6747 www peelschools.org

I am writing to thank you for your delegation to the Peel District School Board on June 15, 2016. In your presentation, you raised concerns for the safety of children when walking to and from school along the municipal pathway between Fairmont Close and Leadership Drive. These concerns include the sighting of coyotes and the proximity to a wooded area and storm water management pond where coyotes may reside. You requested that the Board provide transportation to Churchville Public School or adjust the boundary to Eldorado Public School where students would qualify for busing.

We share in your concerns and agree that the safety of your children is a high priority. It is important to recognize that the City of Brampton is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of safe pedestrian access in your community. Brampton Animal Services has indicated to Board staff that they routinely receive reports of coyote activity and have in place numerous warning signs throughout the city. In addition to the signs, the city directs citizens to their website for safety tips and additional information. Animal Services indicates there have been reports of sightings in your community and consistent with their practice, installed the warning sign that you re.fereneed during your presentation. While these warning signs· may be in place, there is no indication from the City of Brampton that the pathway in your community or any others within the city is unsafe for pedestrian use due to coyote sightings. In determining transportation eligibility, the Board considers all pedestrian access routes to be safe unless specifically advised otherwise by the municipality.

The Board cannot support your request to provide busing to Churchville Public School, however, there is a procedure in place which provides an opportunity for parents to apply for courtesy busing in the event that space is available on the bus. The process for granting courtesy seats has certain limitations and is administered by the school on an annual basis beginning in October. Please contact Churchville Public School who can provide additional information on the process. Courtesy transportation information is also available at STOPR.ca (Procedure 013).

In reference to your request that students in your community be re-directed to Eldorado Public School, the Board approved in the fall of 2015 changes to the boundaries of Churchville Public School, Eldorado Public School and Huttonville Public School. Growth in the area of all three schools continues at a steady pace and the Board must ensure that a plan is in place to provide a balanced enrolment between the three schools. We therefore cannot support your request to re-direct students in your community to Eldorado Public School.

On behalf of the Board, thank you again for bringing your concerns to our attention.

Sincerely,

Janet McDougald Chair
