TITLE III PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Farmingdale State College’s $2million Title III A “Strengthening Institutions Grant” is funded by the United States Department of Education. The overall objective of our five-year effort is to improve student retention and graduation rates by strengthening FSC as a learner-centered institution. A major component of this multi-faceted initiative focuses on professional development for faculty and student affairs professionals. This booklet highlights some of the professional development activities funded by Title III and the resulting efforts and accomplishments of our Farmingdale faculty and staff who are dedicated to our students.

To date, 948 Farmingdale State College students have enrolled in and benefitted from the special enhanced courses listed on the page that follows. Each course or learning community features active student-centered learning and community building. Most courses also include off-campus field trips.

Such pedagogy advances both student learning and retention. The courses are offered each fall semester to new incoming first-year students.

Thus, this process has been valuable for honing my grant writing skills. As a result, I recently submitted two additional grant proposals. One was awarded and the other is pending.

1. Implemented a five week online NCLEX-RN review course in conjunction with workshops taught by these investigators for three sessions in a didactic setting designed to increase the pass rate on the national licensing exam. Goal of this assessment project was to provide the nursing students with the necessary tools to be successful on the NCLEX-RN.

2. As a result of the review program, the Nursing Department BS Degree Graduates (Class of 2013) achieved a 90.48% Pass Rate on the NCLEX. This is especially significant in that these results are higher than ALL local private colleges offering the BS, and also surpass our SUNY colleagues at Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook by a rather large margin.

3. Additionally, the Associate Degree nursing students successfully passed the NCLEX-RN at 81.3% which is above the 80.95% national pass rate for first time test takers in 2013.

Presentation: Presentation on the production of useful energy and combined heat and power from biomass waste. – Stony Brook University, September 2012.

Other: SFG has supported and contributed to the DOE research grant activities to generate useful combined Electric Power and Heat Energy from Biomass Waste such as forest debris, farm waste and hurricanes downed trees etc. All these biomass waste items are gasified and used as inexpensive fuel for Hydrogen Fuel Cells to product cost effective combined heat and power. The research and development activities for this system as well as components design and fabrication are currently underway at the Institute for Research and Technology Transfer (IRTT). This research main objective is to get rid of biomass garbage in a very useful and productive way.

• Liselot Ramirez – who was awarded the Tapia Scholarship • Tamika Jones – who was awarded a scholarship from Facebook

Mentored two Bioscience Majors in research that in turn led to these accomplishments: • Kishan Patel (bioscience) is co-author (with DeCastro) of a research article entitled “ A

facile preparation of various N-heterocycles using amides and olefins” published Tetrahedron Letters

• Valeri Patriti (bioscience) gave a poster presentation at the 20th annual CSTEP statewide student conference in 2012.

PI Name: Angela Jones Title & Department: Assistant Professor of Sociology Year of SFG: 2013-2014 Student Club/ Group Formed or Strengthened:

We hosted an internationally-known researcher and speaker on “Men and Masculinity” on February 25, 2014. Michael Kimmel gave an informative lecture to a crowd of approximately 100 students, faculty, and staff. The program was created to encourage student participation in academic clubs and in the new Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies minor. Our high-profile program is proving effective in recruiting for the defunct Sociology & Anthropology Club and the LGBTQ club. Students who attended the event have also expressed an interest in the new minor, received advising, and 2 students have been registered for the WGS minor.

Other: Students registered in Sociology 283 Sex, Gender, and, Sexuality and Sociology 361 Gender Theory were required to attend the lecture as part of the course. These students were required to submit a written assignment based on the lecture. The assessment of their written work revealed that students reached a deeper level understanding of gender, and the materials assigned in class, as a result of their attendance. Overall, their midterm grades were good. Finally, students participated in an exit survey about the event. 100% of the students in the sample either strongly agreed or agreed that:

1. The event was informative. 2. I enjoyed the lecture. 3. This lecture helped me better understand gender from a sociological

perspective. 4. The lecture has helped me prepare my midterm paper. 5. I would like to have more events like this on campus.

PI Name: Orla LoPiccolo Title & Department: Assistant Professor of Architecture & Construction Management Year of SFG: 2011-2012 Other: To date I have taken students in 4 Materials and Methods of Construction I (CON 161)

sections on a field trip to the Queens Botanical Garden Visitor and Administrative Building to see an award winning sustainable building first hand as part of the grant. Indirectly related I have also taken 3 sections of Site Design and Construction (ARC 364) students to the Queens Botanical Garden to enhance their learning of sustainable site construction techniques.

PI Name: Marie Pullan Title & Department: Associate Professor of Computer Systems Year of SFG: 2011-2012 Other: Students have reported in SALG surveys (Student Assessment of Learning Gains) an

increased connection to the curriculum, fellow students, and the college as a result of participating in this course. Students have also volunteered to serve a FSC open house functions to display their robotic creations to prospective students.

Licensure Examination (NCLEX- RN) for registered nurses from 72.2% in 2012 to 90.48% pass rate in 2013. Additionally, the Associate Degree nursing students successfully passed the NCLEX-RN at 81.3% which is above the 80.95% national pass rate for first time test takers in 2013.
