Overview of a TIPS Meeting
Team-Initiated Problem Solving
› What does the data reveal?› Problem: Difference exists between the expectation
and what is actually occurring.› Problem identification: Difference is discovered and
significance is determined. › The first step, is to make a decision about whether
the “problem” is significant and if so, do we need to take action.
› Problem solving: A plan is created to reduce or eliminate difference.
Identifying the Problem
› Write a hypothesis or problem statement that specifies the precise nature of the problem
› The more W’s (what, when, where, who, why) you incorporate into the problem statement, the more precise the problem statement/hypothesis will be
› The more precise the problem statement, the easier it will be to generate a solution that “fits” the problem
Develop a Hypothesis
› Set SMART goals S- Specific M- Measurable A- Attainable R- Relevant T- Time-Bound
Discuss & Select Solutions
Example
› How are we going to solve the problem?› How are we going to bring about desired change?
› Is the solution appropriate for problem?› Is the solution likely to produce desired change?
Develop & Implement a Plan of Action
Develop & Implement a Plan of Action
› Outcome Data Answers the Question: Did it Work? Define data to be used to answer this question (compare to goal). Must be tied to goal (what and by when).› Things to Define: What tools are you using to gather data? How often are you collecting data?› Has the problem been solved?› Has desired goal been achieved?› What should we do next?
Evaluate & Revise Action Plan
