Sitting on the highway waiting tocatch speeders, a state police officersaw a car puttering along at 22 M.P.H.He thinks to himself, that car is just asdangerous as a speeder. So, he turnshis lights on and pulls the car over.Approaching the car, he notices thereare 5 old ladies, two at the front and 3

at the back, wide eyed and lookinglike ghosts. The driver obviously confusedsaid,"Officer, I don't understand, Iwasn't doing over the speed limit!,What seems to be the problem?""Ma'am," the officer said, "you shouldknow that driving slower than the

speed limit can also be dangerous"."Slower than the speed limit? NO SIR!I was doing exactly 22 miles an hour",the old woman said proudly. The officer containing a chuckle ex-plains that 22 was the route number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned, thanking the offic-er for pointing out her error. "Before Igo Ma'am, I have to ask, is everyoneOK?These women seem badly shaken andhaven't uttered a word all this time""Oh! they will be alright in a minute,Officer, we just got off Route 142."

The Reverend Francis Norton woke upSunday morning and, realizing it wasan exceptionally beautiful and sunnyearly spring day, decided he just had toplay golf. So... he told the AssociatePastor that he was feeling sick andconvinced him to say Mass for himthat day.As soon as the Associate Pastor leftthe room, Father Norton headed out oftown to a golf course about forty milesaway. This way he knew he wouldn'taccidentally meet anyone he knewfrom his parish. Setting up on the firsttee, he was alone. After all, it was Sun-day morning and everyone else was inchurch! At about this time, Saint Peter leanedover to the Lord while looking downfrom the heavens and exclaimed,"You're not going to let him get awaywith this, are you?"The Lord sighed, and said, "No, Iguess not."Just then Father Norton hit the ball andit shot straight towards the pin, drop-

ping just short of it, rolled up and fellinto the hole. It WAS A 420 YARDHOLE IN ONE!St. Peter was astonished. He looked atthe Lord and asked, "Why did you lethim do that?"The Lord smiled and replied, "Who'she going to tell?"

My grandmother, who lived in Tuc-son, was well-known for her faith andlack of reticence in talking about it.She would go out on the front porchand say, "Praise the Lord!"Her next door neighbour would shoutback, "There ain't no Lord!"During those days, my grandmotherwas very poor, so the neighbour de-cided to prove his point by buying alarge bag of groceries and placing it ather door. The next morning, Grandmother wentto the porch and, seeing the groceries, said, "Praise the Lord!"The neighbour stepped out from be-hind a tree and said, "I brought thosegroceries, and there ain't no Lord."Grandmother replied, "Lord, you notonly sent me food but you made thedevil pay for it."

The bride came down the aisle andwhen she reached the altar, the groomwas standing there with his golf bagand clubs at his side. She said, "What are your golf clubsdoing here?"He looked her right in the eye andsaid, "This isn't going to take all day,is it?"

Don't knock the weather. If it didn't change once in a while, nine out of ten peoplecouldn't start a conversation. Kin Hubbard

When a serious illness is diagnosedin a family, it affects each andevery member of the family in a va-riety of ways includingrelationships, money, time and ener-gy. Life changes forever which canbe a source of extreme stress to thestricken family and child.People in general do not realise howhard a chronic diagnosis can beon their lives and it makes it impera-tive that support is given to thefamily and the ill child, not just inmedical treatments but emotionally, spiritually and finacially. Eventhough chronic illness takes an enor-mous emotional toll on families, theycan survive the struggle and end up astronger and wiser unit.

The Cliona Ring Foundation helpsprovide financial support for nonmedical assistance for the families ofchildren with life threateningillnesses. The Foundation is namedafter Cliona who lost her verybravely fought battle against illnessin December 2006.

The goal of the Foundation is to im-prove the quality of life of childrenand families who are dealing withthe trauma of serious childhood ill-ness. The ultimate goal of the Foun-dation is to assist families inremaining intact and functional dur-ing their crisis and to endeavour thatall the family members, friends andneighbours affected

by serious childhood illness arehelped and supported and no needsare left unmet for as long as needed.

Given the nature of this Foundation, even a little money can make agreat difference. Your support wouldbe greatly appreciated.

Fundraising plays an important on-going role to help and finance fami-lies in need of support. Any ideas orsuggestions are welcome. Please email us at:[email protected].

Since the beginning of October, I havenoticed the dreaded Christmas advertsmaking a subtle appearance. It’s al-most as if they are quietly sneakinginto our lives, just waiting forHallowe’en to be over, and we will beinundated with noisy, shiny, twinklingadverts in all shapes and forms, onevery billboard, screen, bus shelterand website. As Robert Paul so elo-quently puts it “Even before Christ-mas has said Hello, it's saying 'BuyBuy'.” Other than acting like an os-trich, there is very little we can do toavoid the intrusion.

A goose never voted for an earlyChristmas. - Irish Saying

There are differing opinions about theright time to expose to the masses. Iremember back in my own childhood, one wouldn’t hear of Christmas untilat least the beginning of December, and the tree was bought just the weekbefore. Ten years ago, I was hearingabout Christmas in the media at thebeginning of November and clearlyremember thinking “It won’t be longnow before they compete with theHallowe’en paraphenalia on theshelves of Supermarkets”.

So here we are, and the question I ampondering is: Is it wrong?

For most, the end of the year is a bit-ter-sweet period, a time of joyful cele-brations and of course the dreadedexpenditures. As a consumer there arebenefits of dealing with Christmasearly on, especially for mothers andthose who are particularly busy in themonths of November and December.

Some of those benefits could include:

1. Getting everything you want 2. Better choice of gifts to buy onthe high street 3. Spreading the cost over somemonths 4. Joining Christmas Clubs tostretch payments of large gifts 5. Allows adequate time to do otherchores such as cleaning the house andgrocery shopping for dinner or enter-tainment 6. Can wrap at leisure 7. Can utilise the internet to pick upbargains 8. Can write meaningful cards overperiod of weeks, rather than therushed greeting you used last year 9. Channeling ideas and thoughtsinto suitable presents 10. Being organised and less stressedduring Christmas week 11. Able to enjoy the inevitableevents that happen during December

So why should you wait until the lastminute?

1. You can pick up great bargains 2. The Christmas atmosphere is con-ducive to shopping and spending 3. Grocery prices are also generallyslashed 4. You can dedicate one whole dayto do all shopping together 5. You can tackle the shops with adefinitive list and complete everythingtogether 6. You can rely on sales and specialoffers on the high street 7. You wont miss out on the “latestrelease” of a particular product 8. Allows for the inevitable last-minute changes in Santa Lists

So when you are around, the choicesare there. The choice is best made ear-ly on, so that at least you can stand byyour decision to begin early or leave ituntil the season is well under way.

Christmas is the day that holds alltime together. - Alexander Smith

But what if you decide to head awayfor Christmas week or into the NewYear? How does that affect your sea-son plans and shopping?

Obviously, if you are heading awaybefore Christmas, it is imperative thatyou decide if the gift shopping anddelivery will be carried out previousto departure, or on your return. Thismay be influenced by date or yourdesire to “get away with murder”!There clearly are advantages to spend-ing the holiday season away fromhome, however, just be clear aboutyour plans.

Benefits of spending Christmasabroad:

1. Weather – generally better, evenif skiing 2. A well-earned break 3. Less hassle (provided the holidayis hassle free) 4. Away from the hype on TV, espe-cially soap operas 5. Experience different kind ofChristmas festivities 6. Don’t have to watch “Willy Won-ka” or “My Fair Lady” again andagain 7. You could do your Christmasshopping abroad, especially if thismeans saving money overall

To conclude:

“You might as well do your Christmashinting early.” – Anonymous.

One never knows!

IFA President Padraig Walshe said animmediate payout of the outstandingSingle Farm Payment, REPS and Dis-advantaged Areas payments duewould be a help to the hard-pressedfarming sector at this time.

The IFA President said that a foddercrisis is now a major factor on manyfarms in the areas affected by theflooding. “Fodder resources were al-ready scarce because of the poorweather during the summer and therecent flooding has compounded this.Farm incomes will be down by over25% this year and the flooding prob-lems will add to this disastrous in-come situation. Any direct paymentsthat are due to farmers must be paidout immediately.”

Padraig Walshe also renewed his callfor a fundamental shift in Govern-ment policy when it comes to protect-ing both rural and urban communitiesfrom the worst effects of flooding. Hesaid the emphasis in the future mustbe on the implementation of an effec-tive waterways maintenance pro-gramme that would spare families and

communities from the devastationthat we have seen in recent days.

He said, “the general disruption thathas occurred because of the heavyrainfall can be avoided if we get backto the practice of clearing rivers andstreams on a regular basis. Spendingmillions of euro on flood defenceswill only protect the town where theyare built, and will push the problemdownstream to other towns and ruralareas.”

Mr Walshe said the role of the vari-ous agencies must also be reviewed.“The intervention of some of theseagencies has held up much-neededalleviation works in the past. In thefuture, we should have one agencyresponsible for the work that has to bedone.”

The IFA President repeated his callfor an emergency package to be put inplace by the Government to assistthose worst affected by the floodingcrisis. This must include rural dwell-ers whose houses have been floodedand farmers who have lost their valu-able winter feed stocks.

Single Farm Payment Would Be A Help

IFA Connacht Vice-PresidentMichael Silke said the recent, unprec-edented flooding across the countrywas going to add further to a severeincome and fodder crisis for farmfamilies.

Mr Silke said “farmers have had tomove cattle off land that is floodedand use up scarce winter fodder. Thedifficult weather during the summerhad already left many farmers withinsufficient fodder. They will now beforced to buy in extra feed, pushingup their costs and compounding theserious income situation for farmfamilies.”

The IFA Connacht Vice-Presidentcriticised the OPW for their lack ofaction in maintaining river systemsand said this has been a significantcontributor to the current difficulties

for thousands of farm families andrural dwellers.

He said, “Three years ago the Officeof Public Works announced the com-mencement of a landmark flood man-agement programme for the RiverShannon to address the ongoingflooding problems by moving the wa-ter through the river more efficiently.Nothing has happened since the an-nouncement and the Governmentshould hang their head in shame.”

Michael Silke concluded, “The Stateneeds to urgently introduce a nationalflood management plan, which in-cludes the environmental manage-ment of the rivers and streams, whichfor years have being both neglectedand ignored. In addition to this theOPW must commence the RiverShannon management programme.”

Many hundreds of years ago in asmall Italian town, a merchant hadthe misfortune of owing a large sumof money to the moneylender. Themoneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautifuldaughter so he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the merchant'debt if he could marry the merchant'sdaughter. Both the merchant and hisdaughter were horrified by the pro-posal. The cunning money lendersuggested that they let providencedecide the matter.

The moneylender told them that hewould put a black pebble and a whitepebble into an empty bag. The girlwould then have to pick one pebblefrom the bag. If she picked the blackpebble, she would become the mon-eylender's wife and her father's debtwould be forgiven. If she picked thewhite pebble she need not marry himand her father's debt would still beforgiven. But if she refused to pick apebble, her father would be throwninto jail.

They were standing on a pebblestrewn path in the merchant's garden. As they talked, the moneylender bentover to pick up two pebbles. As hepicked them up, the sharp-eyed girlnoticed that he had picked up twoblack pebbles and put them into thebag. He then asked the girl to pick herpebble from the bag.

Now, imagine you were standing inthe merchant's garden. What wouldyou have done if you were the girl? Ifyou had to advise her, what wouldyou have told her? Careful analysiswould produce three possibilities:

1. The girl should refuse to take apebble.

2. The girl should show that therewere two black pebbles in the bagand expose the moneylender as acheat.

3. The girl should pick a black pebbleand sacrifice herself in order to saveher father from his debt and impris-onment.

Take a moment to ponder over thestory. The above story is used withthe hope that it will make us appreci-ate the difference between lateral andlogical thinking. The girl's dilemmacannot be solved with traditional logi-cal thinking.

Think of the consequences if shechooses the logical answers.

What would you recommend the girldo?

The girl put her hand into the money-bag and drew out a pebble. Withoutlooking at it, she fumbled and let itfall onto the pebble-strewn pathwhere it immediately became lostamong all the other pebbles.

"Oh, how clumsy of me," she said."But never mind, if you look into thebag for the one that is left, you will beable to tell which pebble I picked."

Since the remaining pebble is black,it must be assumed that she hadpicked the white one. And since themoneylender dared not admit his dis-honesty, the girl changed whatseemed an impossible situation intoan extremely advantageous one.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Mostcomplex problems do have a solution, sometimes we have to think aboutthem in a different way.

Thinking "Out of the Box"

Comic books get no respect but theyshould. Critics should stop tuggingon Superman's cape! Comic bookscan be just as sophisticated as otherforms of literature, a U.S. researchersays.

Carol L. Tilley, a professor of libraryand information science at the Uni-versity of Illinois at Champaign sayschildren benefit from reading comicsat least as much as they do fromreading other types of books.

"A lot of the criticism of comics andcomic books come from people whothink that kids are just looking at thepictures and not putting them togeth-er with the words," Tilley said in astatement. "Some kids, yes. But youcould easily make some of the same

criticisms of picture books, that kidsare just looking at pictures, and notat the words."

Although picture books have longbeen considered appropriate chil-dren's literature, many adults, eventeachers and librarians who willinglyadd comics to their collections, aretoo quick to dismiss the suitability ofcomics as texts for young readers,Tilley said.

"Any book can be good and anybook can be bad, to some extent,"Tilley said. "If you really considerhow the pictures and words worktogether in consonance to tell a story, you can make the case that comicsare just as complex as any other kindof literature."

Have you ever thought about whatyour most valuable asset is? Mostpeople think of their house or car -but the fact is that most people’smost valuable asset is their income.

Did you know that a 31 year oldearning €35,000 a year will earn€1,200,000 up to the age of 65?

If you had an asset worth€1,200,000 would you insure it?

So how does income protectionwork?

Income protection provides youwith an income in the event of younot being able to work due to anyaccident, Illness or disability. Someof the income protection benefitskick in after 7 days (hospitalisationbenefit) but the main income re-placement benefit will start after anagreed deferred period, usually8,13, 26 or 52 weeks. Up to 75% ofyour income, less social welfarebenefits (if any), can be protectedup to the age of 65.

How does Income Protection differfrom Serious Illness Cover?

A Serious Illness covers specificnamed illnesses while an IncomeProtection policy covers any illness, injury, accident or disability thatprevents you from working.

Serious Illness pays a once off lumpsum while Income Protection pays aregular income until you are able toreturn to work or until the policyterm expires, which ever is sooner

No tax relief is available on SeriousIllness but there is on Income Pro-tection.

Only one claim can be made on aSerious Illness policy. Under an In-come Protection Policy there is a‘multiple claim facility’ i.e. as manyclaims as necessary can be made.

How is Tax Relief claimed?

An Income Protection Tax Certifi-cate can be provided by your insurerfor inclusion with your tax returns.

For how long will the benefit bepaid if I am out of work?

The Income Protection Policy paysa regular income until you are ableto return to work or until the end ofpolicy term.

How many claims can be made onthis policy?

As many claims as necessary untilthe end of the policy term.

How is the Benefit paid?

The benefit will be paid by chequeat four-weekly intervals in arrears.Alternatively, the benefit can bepaid directly to your bank account.

For how long will the Benefit bepaid?

The benefit will be paid from theend of the deferred period until oneof the following occurs:

1. you are no longer unable to car-ry out the duties of your occupation, based on the medical evidenceavailable to us the Insurer 2. you return fully to your occupa-tion 3. you die 4. your policy expires

Some myths about income protec-tion:

“I don’t need income protection –the chances are I will never be outof work for that long”The fact is that 1 in 6 people will beout of work for more than 6 monthsover the course of their workinglives – is it worth the gamble?(Source: Friends first)

“I’ll be covered by social welfare ifI can’t work.”For a single PAYE worker whoqualifies for the state disability pen-sion, the benefit is less than €200per week – could you pay yourmortgage/ESB/Carexpenses/holidays out of thatamount? More alarmingly, if youare self employed you are not enti-tled to this benefit at all.

“Alright, I think I may need thiscover - but I won’t be able to affordit.”Not so. Income protection is nearlyalways very affordable. It is ratedon a occupational basis, and also iseligible for tax relief – so if you arepaying the higher rate of tax youwill receive a 41% discount. If youare a company director, your com-pany can pay this benefit on yourbehalf and write off the subsequentpremiums as an expense – withoutattracting BIK.

“Even if I get sick, the companywon’t pay up.”The market leader in income protec-tion, Friends First, paid out over€15 million in claims last year – afigure that will increase this year.

"Income protection won't cover mymortgage against redundancy cov-er."It is true that income protectiondoes not cover against redundancycover, so we have a dedicatedscheme to protect your mortgagerepayments against redundancy -contact me for a quotation.

“When you are grateful, fear disap-pears and abundance appears” ~ TonyRobbins

It shocks us how many companies donot thank their customers. When is thelast time you've been personallythanked by someone you've givenyour business to? When's the last timeyou officially thanked someone whosedone business with you?

To be clear, we are talking about agenuine, heartfelt, official thank you.Not a quick thank you in passing!

Saying "Thank You" is very impor-tant! Particularly with how far a sim-ply "thank you" can take you! A thankyou shows appreciation. A thank youshows respect. A thank you puts you"top of mind." A thank you sets youapart.

Look for opportunities to expressyour gratitude. Obviously when some-one books business with you, a thankyou is in order. Also look for otheropportunities such as for referrals ortime given to hear your pitch, watch ademo, etc.

Make it personal. You should handwrite it. We know...UGH. That's a lotof work. You may be tempted to emailyour thank you...and maybe youshould do that too. BUT, a handwrit-ten, old fashioned thank you note, willtake you farther. Why? Because NOONE else is doing it in today's busi-ness world. Also, be as specific aboutwhat you are thanking them for, asthat makes it much more relevant andgenuine. But do not ask for anythingin your "thank you." Just be thankful!

Take it one step further. The personwho sells the product/service shouldsay thanks. The person who deliversthe product/service should say thanks. And the executive of the companyshould say thanks! You may want tostair step how the thank you is han-dled. Maybe one verbally, one byemail, and the final by mail. Mix it upand hit them from several angles, butmake sure the thank you comes asquickly after the action you're thank-ing as possible.

Saying thank you is powerful. But youhave to make it a habit. Again, sinceno one is taking the time to say thankyou, you WILL stand out!

When did you last say "ThankYou" to a Customer?

The first testicular guard "Cup" was used in Hockey in1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. It took 100 years for men to realize that the brain is also important.

A Little Known Fact...

20 Seconds That Can Change YourLife

Surprising ways to fix your brokenmetabolism...

1. Drink more water. Your bodyneeds water to work effectively, thisincludes your metabolism.2. Laugh daily. Research showsthat you burn 10-40 extra calorieswith every laughing session. Thismay not seem like much, but it alladds up!

3. Get your B vitamins. These vi-tamins are key to having a fully func-tioning metabolism. Low levels ofVit B can leave you feeling tired anddepressed; and it will slow downyour metabolism.

Weekend tip: Always carry your wa-ter bottle and stay hydrated (yoururine should be clear or almostclear). Rent some funny movies thisweekend. To get vitamin B eat morespinach, asparagus, bean/lentils,poultry and eggs.

Anyone fancy swapping goods or services? If yes read on.

Do you have a professional service that you can offer to someone inexchange for their services or goods? We are going to try something new in the Tipp Tatler that will allowyou to barter for goods and services free of charge.

For example maybe you’re a painter who would like to learn how touse computers. Simply send in your offer to us and we will put it outthere to see if anyone will respond. Sample offers might read likethis:-

Qualified, experienced painter willing to trade work for lessons inbasic computing, ie. Microsoft Word and Excel. Ph: 0504-123456

Book keeper available to prepare accounts in exchange for gardenand lawn maintenance. Ph: 067-123456

Beautician will exchange gift vouchers for restaurant vouchers.Ph: 087-12345678etc. etc.

Anyhow we’re willing to give it a shot. So if you want to participatejust email your offer to [email protected] or post to Tipp Tatler,Curraghgraigue, Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary.

A few things to bear in mind:• Keep it short and to the point and try to be specific in what you areoffering and what you would like in return.• Goods and services being swapped should be of equal value (addcash if needed) and valued at what they would cost if you were topay normal rates.• We reserve the right to refuse to publish any offer if it seems inap-propriate.• It is a free service, although if we are inundated with 1000’s of of-fers we will have to charge a nominal fee. So get in early before thathappens!• We reserve the right to make up the rules as we go along. Keep itsimple and straightforward and there should be no problems.

Who knows, maybe it will take off, maybe it won’t. Nothing ven-tured, nothing gained. We’d like to think that it would and believe itis a great opportunity for everyone.

There are a couple of websites that offer the same thing also if youwant to check them out.www.swop-o-nomics.com and www.barterireland.com

William Heaney leads anodd sort of life. A talent-ed writer, he scribblespoems for an Asian friendwho has become an ex-tremely famous poet. With two other friends heproduces masterful for-geries of old first editionswhich he then sells on towealthy collectors. Themoney from this enter-prise goes to a homelessshelter, while he spends his daysworking for a government agency andhis nights drinking too much whilefielding phone calls from his es-tranged wife. He also sees demons.Shadowy creatures that hover aroundeveryone he sees, perhaps feeding offtheir pain and sorrow, or perhaps sim-ply expressions of those inner tor-ments. Why and how he sees thesedemons is gradually revealed over thecourse of the novel, in between en-counters with a vain poet, a disturbedGulf War veteran with a story of hisown, and a woman who seems to befree of demons.

This is quite possibly one of the bestbooks I’ve read all year. Told in crisp, ironic prose, it tells the story of a

flawed but deeply humaneman who wraps himself injaded cynicism and careful-ly constructed deception, allto protect himself, but whonevertheless strives to leavethe world a better place thanhe finds it. It’s about a manwho thinks he can see de-mons everywhere, but it’salso about family andfriends and lovers and thelittle lies we tell each other,

and the bigger lies that are forced onus and how it is possible, somewherebetween the two, to find somethingreal and hold onto it. Funny, mysteri-ous, deeply moving and ultimatelyuplifting, you couldn’t hope for a bet-ter tissue of lies.

...A computer was something on TVfrom a science fiction show, a win-dow was something you hated toclean, and ram was the cousin of agoat.

Meg was the name of my girlfriend, and gig was something you did onstage for money; now they all meandifferent things and that really megabytes.

An application was for employment,a program was a TV show, a cursorused profanity, and a keyboard was apiano.

Memory was something that you lostwith age, a CD was a bank account...

Compress was something you did tothe garbage, not something you didto a file, and if you unzipped any-thing in public you'd be in jail for awhile.

Log on was adding wood to the fire, hard drive was a long trip on theroad, a mouse pad was where amouse lived, and a backup happenedto your commode.

Cut you did with a pocketknife, pasteyou did with glue, a web was a spi-der's home, and a virus was the flu.

I guess I'll stick to my pad and paperand the memory in my head. I hearnobody's been killed in a computercrash but when it happens they wishthey were dead.

Back then...

"Close the curtains," requested our 2year old granddaughter, sitting in apool of bright light. "The sun's look-ing at me too hard."

My friend asked our grandson whenhe would turn 6. He replied, "WhenI'm tired of being 5."

Seeing her first hailstorm, Mary Sue,age 3, exclaimed, "Mommy, it's rain-ing dumplings!"

As I frantically waved away a peskyfly with a white dishtowel, my grand-daughter observed, "Maybe he thinksyou're surrendering."

Announcing to daughter Lori that heraunt just had a baby and it lookedlike her uncle, she said, "You meanhe has a mustache?"

When I asked our grandson if hecould name the capital of Florida, hefired right back, "capital F!"

While shampooing our son, 4, I notedhis hair was growing so fast he'dsoon need it cut. He replied, "Maybewe shouldn't water it so much."

My daughter told her 5-year-old thattheir van was going to be fixed. In-stantly, the small fry assumed, "Oh,it's going to the tire-o-practor?"

Impressed by her 5-year-old's vocab-ulary, my friend complimented theyoung scholar, who nonchalantly re-sponded, " I have words in my head Ihaven't even used yet."

His mom informed her son, Brian, that she was going outside to get alittle sun. "But Mommy, he gulped,"You already have a son -- me!"

When our son asked about two look-alike classmates at school, we toldhim they were probably twins. Thenext day, he came home from schoolall bubbly and said, "Guess what? They are not only twins, they'rebrothers!"

Testimonials(Continued from previous issue)

Financial Abuse

Another definition shows it as a situationwhere an abuser misappropriates avulnerable person’s money or otherassets through various means (theft orfraud); misuses or wrongfully spends avulnerable person’s assets while havinglegitimate access to these; or fails to usea vulnerable person’s assets to meet thatperson’s needs.

Awareness is the first step to dealingwith financial abuse. It is where ourunderstanding begins. Part of thisunderstanding is an awareness of a widerange of financial abuse situations.Caretakers and relatives generally beginsuch abuse in a cautious way, such asstealing a small amount of jewellery, before moving on to even more blatantabuse. Such examples would be forcingor tricking an older adult into selling hisor her house, threatening to kick themout of their house and make themdestitute (neglect), withholdinginformation about welfare benefits, stealing money or personal belongings, making them beg for money, forging asignature on pension cheques or legalpapers such as a will, and misusing apower of attorney. People withAlzheimer’s or dementia, or those onheavy medication are unable todistinguish between one document andanother, and will generally sign anythingput in front of them.

Other examples include using an olderperson’s name to get credit that a personcould not get in their own name, movinginto a person’s home by promising tolook after them and keep them company, and then pressurising them to give giftsor favours, tricking them into paying forwork that never gets done, persuadingthem to invest in a bogus businessopportunity, refusing to return propertyheld in trust, and sometimes the refusalof a lodger or relative to rent to an olderperson when living on their property.

From my own personal point of view Ican see how easy it is to carry outfinancial abuse. At the time of writingmy mother is now 89 years old andsuffers from dementia. I have access toher credit union account and it would beeasy for me to empty that account and

use the money formy own purposes. Ialso have controlover her pension.

There are many people in the positionthat my mother is in, and it is extremelyimportant that those with access to theirassets are intensely conscious of whatfinancial abuse is. People like my motherare powerless, because they no longerhave the facility to think or to know whatis happening to them.

Financial abuse can happen to those whoare living at home, or those who are innursing homes. It is, however, morelikely to happen to single elderly peoplewho are living in isolation.Unfortunately, it is difficult to detect, andit may be a long time before familymembers are aware of it. My mother is acase in point. She was in her 80’s andliving alone, and she was a victim of suchabuse; not, I hasten to add, by her carers, relatives or neighbours. These werealways kind and honest, and kept an eyeout for her when she was living alone.

I first became aware that my mother’smoney was being stolen, when my‘pocket money’ decreased. Even thoughI was in my 50’s my mother liked to giveme ‘pocket money’! I visited her everyweek and she always gave me €5. Thenthis became €1, then a few cents. Mysuspicions were aroused, and when Ichecked her purse I discovered that shehad no money. This criminality had beengoing on for a long time, and I wastotally unaware of it. When I becameaware of what was happening I tookcontrol of her money to ensure that shehad a proper quality of life.
