GIY and Cully & Sully have put thecall out to businesses across Irelandand aim to get 500 companies signedup to their ‘al desko’ growing foodat work initiative.

CEO of Insomnia Bobby Kerr andDragon Alison Cowzer have comeon board to help launch the foodgrowing challenge, called “GivePeas a Chance’.

The initiative aims to help peopleunderstand where their food comesfrom and green Ireland’s workplac-es, the ‘Give Peas A Chance’ cam-paign will see up to 500 teams incompanies all over Ireland growingsome peas on their desk at work overthe summer months. Once they signup to the challenge, the teams willreceive a free Grow pack of sowingpots, seeds and soil plus expertgrowing tips and training advicefrom GIY.

Companies then kick off their ‘aldesko’ growing, competing againsteach other by logging their growingadventures on a dedicated online‘growing wall’ and sharing their ex-ploits on social media. The mostengaged and green-fingered teamwin vouchers to visit BallymaloeHouse & Cookery School worth€1,500, and best of all get to donatea community garden worth €3,000 toa local cause of their choice, from ahospice or school to a care home orMen’s Shed. Call out to get 500 companiesacross Ireland Growing Food at Work

To help battle against higher fuelprices, the AA offers 9 fuel savingtips that every motorist shouldknow this summer:

Go for value: buy fuel in units oflitres, not Euros as better value ap-pears more obvious.

Shop around: don’t always use thesame garage out of habit.

Easy does it: drive smoothly, accel-erate gently and read the roadahead to avoid unnecessary braking

Decelerate smoothly: when youhave to slow down or to stop, de-celerate smoothly by releasing theaccelerator in time, leaving the carin gear

Rolling: if you can keep the carmoving all the time, so much thebetter; stopping then starting againuses more fuel than rolling

Change up earlier: don't labour theengine but try changing up at anengine speed of around 2,000 rpmin a diesel car or around 2,500 rpmin a petrol car. This can make such

a difference that all cars in the fu-ture are likely to be fitted with a'Gear Shift indicator' light to showthe most efficient gear changepoints.

Cut down on the air-con: air-condi-tioning increases fuel consumptionat low speeds, but at higher speedsthe effects are less noticeable. So ifit's a hot day open the windowsaround town and save the air con-ditioning for high speed driving.Don't leave air-con on all the timebut aim to run it at least once aweek throughout the year to main-tain the system in good condition.

Turn it off: electrical loads increasefuel consumption, so turn off yourheated rear windscreen, demisterblowers and headlights, when youdon't need them.

Stick to speed limits: the faster yougo the greater the fuel consumptionand pollution. Driving at 70mphuses up to 9% more fuel than at60mph and up to 15% more than at50mph. Cruising at 80mph can useup to 25% more fuel than at70mph.

The day kicks off with Bush n Briar walk fol-lowed by music on the square after mass.At 12.30 there is a 1916 themed parade so getyer gear out for this!

After the opening ceremony at 1pm there isline dancing with Suzanne at 1.30 followed bySocial Dancing with Phil Maher at 3pm.

The Boom Boozlers group will entertain chil-dren from 2pm to 4pm in the Community Cen-tre.

The Taekwando group will put on an exhibi-tion at 5pm. Sleaze n Cheese will play some80s tunes from 5.30pm -7.30pm. After that,the hugely popular Churn Rolling will takeover on Pallas St..The day will be concluded with music fromEbony from 9pm.

Anxiety (continued from previous issue)

Most children probably feel anxiouswhen experiencing separating from theirprimary caregiver, or from the familiarplace that is called home. Youngchildren, for example, feel very anxiouswhen staying over at a relative’s house,even their grandparents’ house, for thefirst time. Separation anxiety is a normalstate of human development, but as apathological (extreme) complaint, it is afeeling of a repeated excessive level ofanxiety when being separated from aperson or a place. It is pathological if itcontinues and interferes with how achild copes with the everyday challengesof life. It is most relevant to childrenand is regarded as a juvenile complaint.

Separation anxiety has been wellresearched, and John Bowlby was thefirst to explore it in some detail. Forthose of you who are interested youmight like to read his volumes on it.Separation Anxiety Disorder candevelop between 8 months and 1 yearold as children become more aware thatthey are separate distinct beings. Forsome children separation anxiety doesnot develop until they are between 18months and 2½ years.

You may recall my sections ofattachment to the primary caregiver inmy articles on abuse. You mayremember that I wrote about insecureattachment (dismissive attachment andfearful attachment). In a way, this issomewhat similar and is more fullyexplored in my book on abuse. Thechild feels distressed when separatedfrom the primary caregiver, usually themother. This, for example may beclearly seen in some children when theyfirst go to school. They cling to theirmother and cry with distress when sheleaves. Some writers claim that thiscondition is most evident in childrenfrom close-knit families. I do not agreewith this, depending of course on whatthey mean by close-knit. If a child hasbeen raised in a warm, lovingatmosphere where his or her emotionalneeds are met, it is most unlikely thatthey will experience Separation AnxietyDisorder.There are some situations that canaggravate Separation Anxiety Disorder.For example, frequent changing ofhouses or schools can trigger this

anxiety in children who may be prone toit. Changing a baby sitter can also causedistress, because familiarity is verycomforting for a child.

Bereavement can also be very upsettingfor a young child, and this includes theloss of a pet. Sometimes as parents wecan be overprotective, and this mayfoster separation anxiety. Parents whoare overprotective may themselves findthe world an unsafe place, and theirchildren absorb these parents’ fears.

Children who suffer from this areinclined to withdraw socially, they arelistless, sad and find it difficult toconcentrate on anything. They are moreinclined to be negative than positive,have a fear of abandonment, find theworld a scary place, fear death (theultimate and inevitable separation), haveimages of disaster, fearsome creatures,and all kinds of danger that threaten thefamily or themselves. They may also beangry and have suicidal feelings. Theseunfortunate children may be clingy,demanding, looking for attention,forlorn, lonely and angry. Sometimesthis painful mix may exhibit itself insomatic symptoms. Unfortunately, theyare also vulnerable to becomingdepressed on a long-term basis.
