MARMION, DR. BOB. & TOWNSEND, MARILYN.

The Nelson's Sixty-Fours. An intriguing tale. How a Bendigo

archaeological dig recovered an important part of early Victoria's naval

heritage. First Edition; Med. 4to; pp. [ii], iii, 73; illustrated with over 100 coloured and

b/w photographs, selected bibliography, index, original still illustrated wrapper,

fine copy.Drysdale; Historical Solutions; 2011.

The story chronicles the journey of two of the 64 pounders from their origins in

the industrial heartland of Bradford in northern England and their long voyage

to Australia on board the Nelson. The ship played an important role in

defending Victoria for over two decades before she was decommissioned and

her guns placed in storage. With Federation approaching and the outbreak of

the Boer war, it was decided to donate the guns to towns around regional

Victoria to aid recruitment and to promote patriotism. Two of the 64's were

given to Bendigo and after being on display for many years they disappeared.

Years later, a chance discovery during an archaeological dig brings new life

and their relocation to Fort Queenscliff - the heart of Victorian colonial

defence. Click here to Order

for accurate and complete English renderings, initiated a major reassessment

by English-speaking critics of Verne's importance, and is credited with

fostering the publication of numerous new English editions of Verne and the

emergence of Verne studies as a serious academic discipline in the US and

UK. Miller's scholarly edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

was the first annotated editions of this novel in any language. In his later

years Miller was a valued mentor to Verne scholars in the US, UK, Europe,
