School-based assessment and the GAT (Information for students undertaking Unit 3/4 study, Year 11 & 12)

The VCAA applies statistical moderation procedures to all school-based assessments to even out the differences in marking standards that may occur from school to school. This is to ensure that the final results are comparable across the state and are fair to all students.

The statistical moderation process compares the level and spread of each school’s assessments of its students in each study with the level and spread of the same students’ scores in the external examinations, and adjusts the school scores if necessary.

In some studies, statistical moderation uses students’ GAT scores as well as their examination scores. This is done where it gives a better match with schools’ school-based assessments throughout the State. The examination scores will always have the major influence in the statistical moderation calculations.

There are two key principles in whether and how the GAT is used.

1. The GAT components are only used if they make the moderation process more reliable in the sense that the external scores are a better predictor using the GAT scores than without them. The statistic R-square is used to measure the increase in reliability.

2. When used, the GAT components must not exert too much influence on study scores. A variety of tests are performed to determine the influence of the GAT, of which one test is that no more than 5% of study scores should vary by more than 2. To achieve this, the influence of the GAT is kept to the minimum optimal level.

The decision on whether to use the GAT is made separately for each school-based assessment. The General Achievement Test is on Wednesday June 12

Encouraging dads to connect

Often, mothers are the primary caregiver, so children will rely on them for many of their day-to-day needs. But dads are important too – in fact, fathers who are involved with their children bring positive benefits that are unique and special.

Research shows kids who have a solid relationship with Dad get along better with siblings, have better social skills and experience less emotional distress. Father involvement from birth and through childhood is positively linked with children’s overall life satisfaction and wellbeing. What’s more, getting involved is great for dads. Fathers who are connected with their kids are more likely to feel satisfied with their lives, enjoy greater marital stability and have a strong sense of how important they are to their kids.

But the father-child relationship is more than kicking the footy in the backyard, and many dads find it tricky to balance fatherhood with work commitments. Some fathers are especially challenged because they are shift workers or don’t live with their children. Plus, fathers can feel disconnected from their children’s lives because they may be confused about their role.

Getting involved, even in small ways, helps dads develop healthy relationships with their kids. For dads who work long hours, do regular shift work or don’t live with their kids, it’s important to make the most of the time you spend with them. Try these strategies to connect with your kids:

If you’re gone when your child wakes up, leave them a note or give them a call. If you’ll be gone when they go to sleep, give them a call in the afternoon or before they go to bed.

For small children, give them something that belongs to you that they can hold, sleep with or smell.

If you’re going on a work trip, tell your children how long you will be gone for and what you will be doing. Look at a calendar with your children so they can countdown to when you are home, and while you are away send postcards or stay in touch with Skype.

And remember: ‘Believe you can and you're halfway there’.

What a huge success Education Week was for our school. Thank-you to the many families who made time to come and join us in the many activities offered over the week. The selection of experiences highlights for our community the breadth and depth of education experiences that are offered here at Timboon P-12 School. We sent students to The Warrnambool Eisteddfod for ‘Choral Speaking’ and ‘Poetry Reading,’ along with our ‘District Cross Country’ representatives, who so capably ran in Noorat on Wednesday, our grade one and two students ventured to ‘Fairy Park’ as part of their studies, and then of course our ‘Taste of Secondary Education’ on Friday saw our Year 6s step up into senior style education via a day in the High School. What a busy action packed week! But just a sample of what we do here each week.

SRC Fundraiser – Friday 31st May Diabetes Research and Coins for Kids Hey guys, the Month of May is the month of Jelly Babies and we'll be donating to Diabetes Research! On Friday the 31st of May with the help of the Lions Club, the SRC is having a big fundraiser day! We'll be selling Jelly Babies, having a barbecue and making a massive line of coins on the tennis court! We want you to dress up in your best rainbow coloured clothes.

We're sure you want to know a bit about this though. Well the Diabetes Research Centre is a group trying to find a cure for diabetes and help those being diagnosed with it. The jelly baby

donation is for Juvenile Diabetes and will be helping many of the children in this area. How you can help:

On Friday 31st May some of the students will be selling jelly babies at lunch and recess for $2.

The barbecue run by the Lions Club on Friday 31st is a donation of 50c and up.

To dress up in your bright colours you need to donate $1

Place your spare change, it doesn't matter if they're not gold, in the collection jars around the school. There will be collection jars at the Library, the Office and the Cafeteria as well as the Primary School Class Rooms.

On Friday come and participate in laying out the

coins for ‘Coins for Kids / Diabetes

Research’ on the tennis court

Thank you and we hope you have a happy month. Annelise Henderson for the SRC

Terry’s Tech Talk Today’s topic is Glass When I put glass in a tech spot, most people would think I’ve lost the plot, but surprisingly I haven’t. When you think of glass, the first thing that comes to mind is a window or maybe a glass bottle, quickly followed by the shattering of breaking, certainly not technology except for a computer or iPad screen. We may even give some credit to the fact that tablets and computers are becoming touchscreen which makes the glass feel a little “smarter”. The fact is, our future world will involve more glass then you could ever imagine. There is actually a “glass race” going on for companies to produce the strongest and most useful glass. Corning looks like they are winning the race at this stage and have invented what they call Gorilla Glass, and is the closest thing ever seen to unbreakable glass. If you want to understand why glass breaks and how they reduced the amount of breakages go to the following website http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/#the-science Most of us really just want to know “how will this change my life?” and the answer to that questions is “lots”. At the end of this article I have placed a Youtube link from Corning about the future of glass, I strongly recommend taking a look, I found it fascinating. It shows where they believe glass will take us to in the near future. The video shows the life of a family going about their “normal” day. The video highlights the possibilities of technology and removes the old school ideas we have about glass. It shows how tablets will integrate our everyday life and connect to the surroundings like the wardrobe (I said you need to see the video) and this modern house had no curtains, but rather the windows changed colour and blacked out at night. Even the family car dash was all glass (and could be safer than the plastic we use now which in an accident can splinter) and could change the look to suit whoever is in the car. Schools and work places were the big winners allowing for incredible connectivity and sharing of data and virtual work places such as an operating theatre made completely of glass. Glass is very easy to clean and can easily reflect an image, hence the reason we use it on computers and tablets. I think the biggest thing going for glass is it is clear and allows us to see right through it, but can be manipulated with colour and images. This allows the viewer to simultaneously look at several images at once whilst looking through the glass at a static background (wait ‘til you see the school trip to the zoo). Even our home furniture will change, in particular the TV will be replaced with a glass wall that will be coloured the same as the other walls and become a giant screen connected to a tablet for control. Computers are just about a thing of the past now. And remember this is only the beginning. Anyone as old as I am may remember at school the greatest technology was a large calculator (You younger ones can stop the old jokes now, you will get your turn – we thought we were modern back then, imagine what your kids will see). Here’s a thought for the future. Most glass is made from sand, our future world may change a “war over oil” as some believe we see now to a “war over sand”. Hard to imagine grown men fighting over sand castles! Here is the link to “A day made of glass 2” on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-GXO_urMow Thanks for taking the time to read this article. The Faculty of Arts – introducing a new course structure in 2014. The changes are designed to give students a deeper understanding and appreciation of the area in which they specialise. More emphasis will be on how to apply their knowledge and to develop research skills. Three categories of study will be introduced to complete a ‘major’ – gateway, cornerstone and capstone. These are chosen key subjects which must be taken in a student’s major area of study. Join the Arts Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/MonashArts

The Bachelor of Architecture/Master of Architecture has a new entry process from 2014. There will be a pre-selection activity and an interview, and the maths prerequisite will be removed. The ATAR will still be important but the pre-selection activity and interview will provide additional ways for you to demonstrate your ability. In the pre-selection activity you will respond to an issue through text and image (not about assessing design or drawing expertise). The interview is a chance to share your story and to say why you want to study architecture. After applying for the course in Term 3 through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, you will receive a pre-selection activity to complete. Based on this, you may be invited to an interview. Your application will be assessed on your ATAR, pre-selection activity and interview performance. See: www.artdes.monash.edu/architecture/news.php

Information Technology – the Computer Games Boot Camp is on again this year. It is a seven-day event for Year 9 -12 students to experience everything connected to computer games and IT. Learn from experienced industry professionals, talk to like-minded individuals and expand your networks. Workshops, tournaments, presentations and activities will take place. Who: students interested in becoming IT professionals, building and designing games, multimedia or simply playing games; When: Sat 6 - Fri 12 July; Where: Clayton campus; Register: http://cgbc.infotech.monash.edu/
