Samantha Cunnington Tribute

Sam Cunnington was an inspiration to all that have

had the pleasure of knowing her.

Sam’s company was called Personal Best. She

was passionate about people working towards

being the best they could possibly be, and

supported many in achieving this goal. Her

inspirational battle with breast cancer was made

public through her tireless work to promote breast

cancer awareness and raise funds to support the

fight against this undiscriminating disease.

Sam role-modelled strength, determination and

passion. She celebrated the achievements of her

children and made positive plans for the future. As

a community we were blessed to have had Sam as a

member and grateful for the legacy she has left

behind.

To Steve, Marissa, Max, Lewis and family our

deepest condolences. The support and strength

they have all shown through this tragedy has been

inspiring.

It’s up to all of us now to carry on with Sam’s great

work and “Be our Best”.

of May. Information regarding the test will be provided to parents and students shortly. What is NAPLAN? The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. All government and nongovernment education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. If you have any questions regarding this please contact the school on 5598 3381. Will I receive a report on my child’s performance? A NAPLAN report will be issued by your school later in the year. The same report format is used for every student in Australia. The school will notify you when the reports are being sent home. If you do not receive a report, you should contact the school. Individual student results are strictly confidential. All Students in Year 7 & 9 will receive a NAPLAN “information pamphlet for parents” today. . Uniform: The uniform (dress code) policy for 2013. Some of the notable changes were:

On Monday our year 9/10 C45 (Small Business Class) visited the Tower Hill Lavender farm. Year 9/10 C45 Business Unit: What are they doing (Task)? Visiting a Lavender farm to see first-hand how this business operates. Why are they doing it (Learning)? Learn how to grow lavender so we can plant it on a school plot. Focus on the business and horticulture aspects of this process. What does it look like (Success)? Area full of flowering lavender on our school grounds. Develop an Enterprise component to the project.

Skills and qualities that help children cope with life’s ups and downs:

Trust - that the world is safe and that there are caring people to help them.

Belief - in their ability to do things for themselves and achieve their goals.

Feeling good - about themselves and feeling valued for who they are by their parents and carers.

Optimism - that things generally turn out well.

Ability to manage their feelings, thoughts and behaviours.

Children develop these skills and qualities over time, initially through their experiences in coping with small stresses with help from supportive adults. When bigger stresses come along, even though at first they might feel quite distressed, children can draw on what they have learned about helping themselves to cope and feel better. Our annual Cross Country is on this Friday beginning at 2:15 down at the Distillery. Any parent interested in coming to cheer or run the event is more than welcome to come along. Each student will score extra points for coming in their house colours on the day. Thanks to the families who are making an effort to support our school uniform policy by wearing correct items. Unfortunately, the number of students now coming along in “track pants” and “runners” seems to have had a large increase this last week. Please make adjustments to this prior to letters being sent out. The annual NAPLAN test week will be during week 5 of this term. Students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are all involved in this process. Notes with information to parents will shortly be distributed. You are most welcome to pop in and chat with either myself or Mr Fitzpatrick if you have any queries about this process as this event approaches. ANDREA TAYLOR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL P63 : Beyond School - career pathways A big thank you to yet another community member who freely gave her time to talk with our Year 10 students about her career pathway and experiences. Melissa Berry, the Director of TRY Timboon Children's Centre, described her pathway from school, to university and her involvement in different Early Education settings - child care, pre-school as well as schools. Melissa spoke of the qualities and attributes students should develop while at school to assist them in achieving career goals, giving hints for resume writing and presentation.

Year 10 Urban camp - June 12th Students are asked to organise the purchase of their own Myki cards for travel on public transport in Melbourne, prior to the camp. They received information this week about how to apply for a Myki card online. Warrnambool Railway Station does not sell or 'top up' Myki cards. It is possible to buy child Myki cards from retail outlets in Geelong. We will have limited opportunities to purchase these in Melbourne prior to using them. Organising these online will require a credit card number and at least 7 days for delivery. If it is not possible for a student attending camp to get a Myki card prior to camp, please let Mrs Nicholson or Ms Wakefield know as soon as possible so we can investigate alternative options. Year 11 Work Experience Year 11 VCE students will be undertaking Work Experience placements next week. The majority of students are placed in

Melbourne and will be staying in Melbourne Metro Youth Hostel. Others are placed locally. We depart from school on Sunday afternoon to arrive in Melbourne with daylight to explore our surrounds and get ready for the excitement of Public Transport in rush hour in Melbourne. We return home late Friday night. A long, challenging and exciting week for students and staff. We should have some interesting stories to share once we return !!! Wish us luck. Good luck also to our VCAL students will be attending their weekly work placements, attending their TAFE courses and following their normal school program, attending school as usual. A wonderful effort by all players who demonstrated excellent team spirit and cohesive play. INTERMEDIATE: C. Ayres, G. Barnett, O. Bell, A. Blain, R. Dendle, E. Finch, A. Harris, K. Jones and R. Vogels. Round 1 vs MRC: Timboon lost 10 to 14 Round 2 vs Cobden: Timboon lost 8 to 16 Round 3 vs Campberdown: Timboon a convincing win 19 to 3 Round 4 vs Terang: An extremely close win 10 to 9. A sporting effort by all team members to come third in the competition with 2 wins and 2 losses. CAROLYN WORDSWORTH JUNIOR NETBALL REPORT The Year 7 and Year 8 netball teams played at Terang stadium on Tuesday May 7

RESULTS: Year 7 team: Win against Terang, losses against Cobden and MRC. The team won the consolation to place 3

rd in the

competition. Year 8 Team: Lost against very competitive MRC and Cobden team and improved to lose by three goals to Camperdown and Terang. Thanks to all the girls who took part. They showed an improvement in their game skills and strategies and participated in a sporting manner. A big thank you to Emily Finch and Abby Lindquist who coached the students and umpired their games. Last Thursday, as part of the year 5-6 TAP program, Mr Laurie Smart presented the Year 5 & 6 children with an incubator to be used to hatch chickens and ducklings. The children are all very excited and looking forward to their new responsibility. I can’t wait until they hatch so we can start building the coop. Pia It was interesting to learn that chickens see blue as black. Zavier Today I learnt that chickens take 21 days to hatch and ducks take 28 days to hatch. Jorji I am looking forward to putting the torch up to the egg and seeing if there is a chicken. Dean I am looking forward to watching and raising chickens. It will be really fun and interesting. “Keys Please” is a short, 70-75 minute session aimed at helping you, the Learner Driver, enjoy the learning-to-drive experience, pass your Licence tests and become a safe and competent driver. At the same time it will help your supervising drivers (parents, older brothers/sisters, uncles, aunts, whoever) tackle their role with confidence while avoiding the stress that can sometimes be a part of it. It’s been run here at Timboon P-12 College for a few years now, with great success. Everybody who attends comes away saying they’ve learned something. And had a laugh! Learning to drive should be a fun, exciting time – not a scary or dull chore. We’ll show you how to make the most of it. Terry’s Tech Talk Cheap phone calls: I have talked a lot about the future and what you can do if you have heaps of spare money you don’t need. Now I want to go where the phone companies don’t want us to know about – Free and cheap phone calls. Let’s face it, when they said “talk is cheap” they were never talking about phone calls which can add up, especially if you have friends and family a long way away or even overseas (at Timboon that can include Warrnambool which is an STD call). The first is quick, easy and free if you are with Telstra and is called “wide area calls”. Wide area calls is for country people who, like Timboon residents, have an STD phone call to the “local” city, in our case Warrnambool. So many things we do involve a phone call to Warrnambool. Here is the fix that Telstra don’t advertise loudly. Ring Telstra and ask to be connected to “Wide Area Calls”. As soon as you do this, you can ring Warrnambool and everywhere in between for a local phone call – untimed (this does NOT allow you to connect to Colac as they are in the 53 phone district). The technical stuff: Phones are set into zones which can be identified by the 5598 prefix. A local phone call is any number within your zone and any zone connecting to your zone i.e. 5595, 5566 etc. Wide area calls allows all your current zones plus one extra zone as long as it is within (in our case) the 55 phone exchange. This means from the Timboon township you can call to about Port Fairy – and it’s a local call. This is great if your family and friends live in Warrnambool, you can now talk all day for the cost of a local call, but what if you want to ring Queensland or your kids have just moved to Melbourne for University? This is where the internet can get really useful. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to talk anywhere in Australia, untimed for free? Yes, I did say that correctly: untimed for free anywhere in Australia. It’s called VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and uses your internet to make phone calls. This does require you to sign up with a VoIP provider with a cost starting from $10 per month for a service that gives 10cent phone calls, $15 for free calls (to fixed lines only) or $40 for free calls to mobiles and most overseas countries as well. The cheaper plans allow you to talk to the major overseas countries for 1.9cents per minute, while the $40 plan gives you the lot. Once you connect to a VoIP service you only need your current phone line to enable a broadband connection and to receive calls, so you can reduce the amount you pay for line rental as well. But wait, there’s more! Now you can choose as many phone numbers as you want (for $5 per extra number) in any exchange you want. Consider this, your mum is in Queensland, or your kids are in Melbourne and you can ring them for free but it still costs them heaps to ring home. You get a Brisbane or Melbourne phone number and they can ring you for a local call (this is great for businesses that work out of many cities, clients can ring cheaper and/or think they are local). I know many of us have large mobile plans with hundreds of dollars in available calls, but with VOIP you may even be able to reduce your mobile bill and use your home phone more. I hear you ask “what about the quality”, I have been using VoIP now for about eight years and most people I ring have never known. Even visitors to my home that have used the phone did not know they were using VoIP (I use a cordless phone as well). Because the VoIP phone uses the internet and not the phone line, the original phone can still be used normally to make or receive calls whilst someone else in the house is on the VoIP line. One of the biggest challenges for a young person is how and where to commence their career journey. The Try A Career expo on Friday 31

st May at the SWTAFE’s Sherwood Park Campus

gives the opportunity for our Year 9s to try ‘hands on activities’ and talk to people involved in careers and to find out where to learn more. Over a 90 minute period, students will have the opportunity to engage in three different hands on experiences. A bus will take the students to Sherwood Park on Friday 31

st May. They will be

there from 11:20 until 12:50. Students make their choices at school and will be given an individual timetable.

2. CAREERS EXPO 2013

All Warrnambool and District Secondary Colleges in conjunction with the region’s Further Education providers will be combining to host the Biennial Careers Expo during Careers Week in May 2013. The primary aim of the Expo is to assist students and their parents to research a wide range of careers options in preparation for the important decisions students will make over the next few years. The Careers Expo is conducted every two years and from past experience and testimonials, is an invaluable experience and extremely useful in assisting students in their career decision making and transition process. Research clearly indicates that families who research career options early have a greater degree of success in navigating through the many career options. Guest presenters are current practitioners in their chosen vocations and they will outline the day to day tasks involved within their career, the career paths and education and training required to obtain employment in their field / industry as well as further career prospects / advancement opportunities.
