PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
This week we have had to place a block on Skype. Skype
allows students to view each other over the internet. Some
of our students have been viewing people from other
locations. This can be a dangerous situation given the
number of predators using the Internet to meet up with
young, naive students. If you have concerns about Skype,
please contact the school.
All students in years 3,5,7 and 9 took part in Naplan testing
this week. The tests are just a snap shot of a student’s
progress on a particular day. All tests were conducted
under test conditions with a supervisor. Student’s requiring
special assistance or consideration were given extra
support.
It is a positive thing to be able to acknowledge those
students who participate in events that require a special
skill or talent. If I am aware of these events, I place a
congratulatory message on the front of the newsletter. If I
miss out on acknowledging a student it is usually because
the information has not been passed on. If your child or
someone you know has doing something that they need to
be congratulated for, please give the office a call or drop
me an email.
If you have any concerns or issues that you wish to discuss with me please feel free to give me a call at school (55983381) or on (0407345324) ROSALIE MOORFILED PRINCIPAL

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORTS
Opportunities: Currently our Year 11 students are in Melbourne completing a week’s work experience. This is a unique experience that other schools don’t always offer. During this camp, students are expected to commute to their work experience placements twice daily. This experience teaches students how to make their way around Melbourne independently, as well providing the Year 11 group the opportunity to discuss and support each other through their daily experiences. At Timboon P-12 School we value the importance of providing students with unique educational opportunities and programs that foster positive peer and school connectedness.
Transition Year 6-7 (2013): Thank you to the large number of parents who attended the ‘School Tours’ last Friday. This was a great opportunity to provide parents with a snapshot of the 7-12 area of the school in action. These tours coincided with the ‘Taste of Secondary Education’ day. All Timboon Year 6 students experienced some excellent Secondary School programs (Check out the photos of the day in this newsletter). This is the first phase of our Year 6-7 Transition Program. Phase 2 will focus on our 7-12 Open Evening ‘Timboon on Display’ which will occur on June 5
th at 7:00pm in the School Hall. We look
forward to seeing you there! Further ‘School Tours’ are available on June 6
th. If this date does not suit and
you would like to have a tour of the Secondary School. These can be arranged anytime; please contact me at the school on 5598 3381.
Reminder: There are lots of things happening in our School next week to celebrate Education Week. Some of the great programs include the Reach Foundation conducting Wellbeing workshops with our Year 9/10 students, a Facebook workshop for parents and students (Tuesday evening), P-4 Maths evening and much more…………..
And remember: ‘A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm’. Henrik Ibsen. SEAN FITZPATRICK ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Our playground (and most of our roof) is now awash with balls. The arrival of our Coles Sports Equipment for schools, from 2011, has seen a flurry of activity and fun all round. Many new play groups have been established and children are needing to learn new ways to co-operate and get along with this change of play focus. Turn taking, understanding the rules, and how to cope with differences of ideas and opinions have been a major focus across the play ground. A huge thank-you must go to all who collected the vouchers last year.
Our year 3 and 5 students have taken part in the Naplan test for 2012. Parents will not receive any information on their child’s results until late term 3 early term 4. Last week our wonderful TSPA parents ran the annual ‘Mother’s Day Stall’ for our P-6 students. I am sure there were many very lucky Mums who woke up on Sunday to a gift from our TSPA group’s efforts. Thank-you is extended to the hard working TSPA group members for making our school and community a better place. ANDREA TAYLOR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL 9-12 SUBSCHOOL REPORT Our year 11 students are currently on Work Experience in Melbourne. The group travelled to Melbourne Sunday afternoon and settled in to the North Melbourne YHA, preparing them to travel to work independently Monday morning and from all reports everything has run smoothly and everyone is having a great time. Thank-you must go to Marc Graesser, Drew Deppeler and Julie Nicholson for your organisation and support of the students. Year 9 students have will complete their final Naplan test today having completed Literacy and Numeracy skills over the past three days. Well done to all students for your positive conduct throughout. Year 9 and 10 blocking sheets are being finalised, and shortly elective subjects will be requested from each student. It is important that subject choices are discussed at home and unit descriptions are looked over in the handbooks. Parents are welcome to come to the elective counselling sessions with your sons or daughters. Notes will be distributed shortly. Next week is Education Week and we have number of extra activities happening, including the year 9 and 10 students attending a session each with the amazing team from the REACH Foundation. Our year 10 Peer Support students will lead and begin fund raising for an end of semester celebration with the year 7 students. Please be on the lookout for the Guess the Number Jar! On Tuesday, 22
nd May World Vision hosts a Global Leaders
Convention and we have two students from Year 10 attending. Tain Selten and Marissa Foley are travelling to Geelong to participate in this great event. GABBY THEOLOGOUS, 9 -12 SUBSCHOOL LEADER
5-8 SUBSCHOOL REPORT
Huge congratulations to our 5 to 8 students who participated in the recent school cross country. It was fabulous to see the parent participation and support for this event.
Our recent Preparing for Secondary Education Day was a great success; depicted by the smiling faces and positive comments made by our year six students. This was a unique opportunity for our students to experience many of the subjects only offered to a student studying at a secondary level. Our students’ positive attitude and eagerness to learn more about life as a year 7 student displays the maturity and preparedness of our year six students; certainly a tribute to their year six teachers and primary school experience. The tour groups were also a positive inclusion on this day, as parents were welcomed and encouraged to discuss all areas pertaining to secondary schooling with our Secondary Principal, Mr Sean Fitzpatrick, and two members of our student leadership team, Rhys Kensit and Ashley Bentley.
KYLIE ORR, 5 – 8 SUBSCHOOL LEADER P-4 SUB-SCHOOL REPORT As reported in last week’s newsletter, our grade 1 and 2 students recently visited some food outlets in Warrnambool, as part of their ‘Food’ theme. A very exciting day was had by all involved. Here are some of the student’s responses about their day.
Fresha was amazing. It was so big I nearly got lost.
The freezer was very, very, very cold. I nearly got
frozen. By Ava Bentley
I liked Fresha because they showed us how they make
it. By Daniel Shannahan
The hamburgers at the Meat Barn were tasty and
the toy was funny. I had a great day on the
excursion. By Kaylee Vogels
The Meat Barn was fun. They gave us a sheep. They
were made out of foam. We got to have a hamburger.
By Taj Quarrell
My favourite was going to Woolworths. I liked buying
fruit. I bought a mandarin and a banana for $1.
By Olive Andrews
I got to buy grapes and a mandarin. I got to scan and
pay for it myself. I liked the bakery. We got a donut.

LIBRARY NEWS Our library is celebrating National Simultaneous Story Time on May 23rd with a visiting story teller, none other than our local Mayor, Matt Makin. Local playgroups and the new Child Care Centre have been invited to attend. In preparation for this event the library will be having a two week focus on bears, as the featured story this year is ‘The Very Cranky Bear’ by Nick Bland. I am hoping to have a bear display in the library, and would like students to bring bears (the stuffed variety) to the library to help make a bear gallery. JENNY EVANS
National Simultaneous Story time comes to Timboon Library
On Wednesday, 23 May, 2012, at 11:00am Timboon Library will join organisations from Broome to Hobart, reading the picture book The Very Cranky Bear to more than 170,000 children across Australia. Kane Horwill, Primary PE Coordinator REPORT FROM SCIENCE Week 1 of the Calves Amid much excitement our calves, named Choc-Chip and Sooky, arrived at school on Thursday, 3
rd May. Over the next 3 weeks
year 7 and 8 students in the ‘Cows Create Careers’ class will be learning how to look after the calves, and about career opportunities available in the Dairy Industry. The calves have been a welcome addition to the school environment with everyone from the primary school through to the teachers stopping by for a ‘chat’.
Barwon Prison On Tuesday the 8th of May the Year 11 and 12 Legal
Studies students left in the dark for Geelong.
We approached Barwon Prison, a male maximum security
jail, just before nine am. Students had to go through
extensive security to gain admittance to the jail and
this was rather nerve racking for some. This included
screening for drugs, a metal and wand search. Once
inside, students had the opportunity to speak to five
prisoners about their crimes, the legal system and life
in prison in general. Some of the student‟s comments
about the experience are below.
I learnt that some criminals are just normal
people who messed up and would trade anything
for freedom.
It made me realise that the media judges the
jail conditions harshly, but they earn
everything they have in their cells.
There was a great variation in the personalities
that we saw. Some had remorse and some would
do it all over again.
Awesome experience hearing it all from their
point of view.
I enjoyed hearing how the prisoners felt about
why they were in jail and what it‟s like in there.
They were all very different from each other
even though they had done similar things.
It was really good to be able to see the other
side of law enforcement, and to see what
prisoners missed the most from the outside.
Carolyne Wakefield.
ICAS Competitions: please ring the office for entry
forms for these competitions. We would love your
children to represent the school. It will require about
an hour of their time on the subject designated day.
They cater to all interests and talents.

SO YOU WANT TO BE AN ACCOUNTANT? Becoming an
accountant includes completing a major study in accounting at
university. Several degrees offer accounting ‘majors’ such as a
Bachelor of Accounting, a Bachelor of Business or a Bachelor of
Commerce (always check which majors are available in any
degree you are considering, to see that it has the majors that
interest you). Further exams after completion of university study
can lead on to registration as a chartered accountant. It is also
possible to study for a Diploma in Accounting at a TAFE
Institute, however, to become an accountant you would need to
complete university-level study. Often two years at TAFE are
equivalent to one year at university.
WHAT ATAR WILL I NEED TO ACCESS A COURSE?
ATARs always depend on the number of places available in the
course, the number of applicants for those places, and the ATARs
of those applicants. For the 2011-2012 period, the following are
examples:
Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne:
95.45
Bachelor of Commerce at Monash University (Clayton):
90.30; Monash Bachelor of Business
(Accounting)(Caulfield): 83.50
Bachelor of Accounting at RMIT: 84.15
Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin (Melbourne): 75.95
Bachelor of Accounting at La Trobe (Bundoora): 70.15
Bachelor of Accounting at Swinburne (Hawthorn): 68.30;
Swinburne (Lilydale): 51.40
Bachelor of Accounting at Victoria Uni (Footscray Park):
57.50
NOTE: Monash University offers a SCHOLARSHIP in a
Bachelor of Accounting at the Clayton campus. It is a joint
industry-university initiative involving industry sponsored
scholarships. Selection uses the ATAR, a form to be completed
and an interview. The program includes industry-based learning
periods.
ACCOUNTING CADETSHIPS - A number of large
accounting firms offer CADETSHIPS. These provide the
opportunity to gain practical experience while studying at
university. For example, at Ernst & Young cadets work full-time
and study part-time for two years, then two years is undertaken
full-time at university. On successful completion of the degree,
cadets have the opportunity to return to full-time employment
with Ernst & Young at a higher level than their graduating peers.
Applications for these cadetships open on 21 May at
www.ey.com/au/careers. EY is holding an information session
5.30-7.30pm, on 7 and 13 June where you can find out more;
where: 8 Exhibition St, Melbourne. Several other firms also offer
cadetships – some to check out are at KPMG, Deloitte,
PriceWaterhouse Coopers, for example.
IN YEAR 10? RESOURCES FOR YOU TO CHECK OUT -
La Trobe university has a really useful website, offering
assistance with issues and questions directed at students moving
into VCE (useful for students considering studying at any
university). There are videos about subject choice, the ATAR,
prerequisites, and what is meant by Clearly-In. See:
www.latrobe.edu.au/year10.
DO YOU WANT TO WORK WITH ANIMALS? Careers
working with animals are many and varied, from veterinary
surgeon, to farmer, to animal carer and so many more. Melbourne
University offers the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine which is
completed following a science degree with the required
prerequisites subjects having been undertaken. This is the only
course in Victoria offering qualifications to work as a vet. Other
university degrees related to animals are available:
Deakin University offers the Bachelor of Zoology and
Animal Science and the B. Wildlife and Conservation
Biology
La Trobe university offers the B. Animal and Veterinary
Biosciences, the B. Agricultural Science and the B.
Wildlife and Conservation Biology
Melbourne University offers the B. Agriculture
Monash University offers the B. Veterinary Biosciences
In addition, many university science degrees offer zoology as a
major study.
Some TAFE Institutes offer a range of courses such as animal
care and management, animal studies, animal technology,
companion animal services, horse management and equine
studies.
For those interested in animal studies, RSPCA in conjunction
with Victoria University is offering the Cert 2 in Animal
Studies in a learning environment developed to provide young
people wanting to work in animal care to improve skills and
knowledge with no disruption to normal school commitments.
The course takes 10 weeks with practical sessions and guaranteed
work placements, held at RSPCA Burwood East. Applications
for the latest course close on 14th May (others to follow). See:
http://www.rspcavic.org/services/education/cert-ii/.
BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS AND BACHELOR OF
MUSIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE – The
Bachelor of Fine Arts is offered at the Southbank campus,
while the Bachelor of Music is offered at Parkville. Currently
the Bachelor of Fine Arts covers Contemporary Music,
Dance, Film and TV, Music Theatre, Production, Theatre
Practice and Visual Arts. To find out more information about
these programs and how to apply go to: www.vca-
mcm.unimelb.edu.au/future_students.
VICTORIA UNIVERSITY NEWS –
OPEN DAY COMING UP SOON! VU Open Day is on
Sunday 24 June (earlier than most). Open Day will give you a
taste of what VU student life is like, a chance to be taken on a
campus tour and provide the opportunity to chat to lecturers and
current students. With student bands playing, it should be a fun-
filled event. When: 10am-4pm.
DO YOU WANT TO BECOME A HOME ECONOMICS
TEACHER? From 2013 Home Economics becomes one of the
