Dual Language is a Rigorous Program

• Homework in both languages

• 30 minutes of homework every night

• Quarterly projects including Hispanic Heritage, Black History and Science

• Grades are given in all subjects including Spanish, French, Music, Art and

PE. Make sure to check ProgressBook regularly to stay current on grades.

• Students need to practice their Spanish or English at home. Duolingo and

Mango Language are two websites that can be used for free. Other

websites can be found on our school homepage. iStation can be used in

August once students start school.

What can I expect from my child in terms

of language acquisition?

Research shows it takes years to become fully bilingual depending on the individual. You must be patient.

If anyone in your house is a Spanish speaker, speak to your child in Spanish even if they do not

respond in Spanish. The more exposure to the second language, the more they will learn and the more comfortable they will be using it.

The more effort they put in to being bilingual the more they will be able to speak. Using resources

at home like iStation, Mango Language and Duolingo give your child more language practice when not in school.

Every child is different! Children learn at their own pace. It may be several years before you find

out just how much Spanish your child truly knows.

Advanced Fluency: It takes students from

4-10 years to achieve cognitive

academic language proficiency in a

second language.
