making the Best in Class even BetterNew 2012 Floor Plans and the 2013 Zephyr From introducing the 2013 Zephyr to claiming the top spot among Class A motorhome manufacturers, there is plenty going on at Tiffin Motorhomes. Mix in a couple of new floor plans and coaches with fireplace options and it’s easy to see that 2012 is off to a great start as Tiffin marks its 40th year in business. Tiffin ended 2011 as the nation’s top Class A manufacturer with a 21.1 percent share of the market, according to a report from Statistical Surveys. That was up from Tiffin’s 17.9 percent share in 2010. “We appreciate the collaborative effort of our dealers and manufacturing team, and our loyal following from the Tiffin Motorhomes family of coach owners,” said General Manager Tim Tiffin. “As we look ahead to 2012, we’ll continue our commitment to customer service, supporting our dealers and doing what’s right for our customers.” With some new offerings – starting with the Zephyr – Tiffin is poised to continue its success. The Zephyr, which will be a 2013 model, has two new floor plans – the 45 LZ and the 45 TZ. The exterior highlights of the Zephyr range from new front and rear cap designs to new logos and exterior graphics. New headlights and tail lights, along with side-view mirrors with integrated cameras, also make for an impression worth a second glance. The Zephyr is powered inside by the new ISX Cummins 500 horsepower engine, with proven technology to deliver better fuel economy, performance, reliability and durability. “With the luxurious appearance of the exterior and interior, the Zephyr has really moved into a new category,” said Jerry Williamson, Tiffin’s National Sales Manager. “It’s always been Tiffin’s most luxurious

product. Now in the industry, it’s moved up into a higher class. It has a totally new contemporary design and more modern appearance.” Included among the interior changes is the driver’s area being moved more than 10 inches forward and a new dash design. “It makes driving it more comfortable and gives a little more automotive feel to it,” explains Williamson.

An L-shaped sofa is standard with the LZ coach, giving it a residential design and feel. An option for the living area of the coach includes an entertainment center that includes an electric fireplace and a 42” TV with a motorized lift. Flush-mounted cabinet doors and new cabinet hardware also give the coach a higher-end look. In addition, the Zephyr has flush floor slides on both the driver and passenger side; newly designed countertops with extra wraparound solid surface; and a wardrobe area with stacked washer/dryer.

“As we look ahead to 2012, we’ll continue our

commitment to customer service, supporting our

dealers and doing what’s right for our customers.”

Tim TiffinTiffin General Manager

Top to bottom: The new 2013 Zephyr features a new front end cap design, an entertainment center that includes a fireplace option and 42” TV, a standard L-shaped sofa and new tail lights.

spring into summer With Savory and Sweet Favorites

Gail Johnson

As our unusually mild winter in North Alabama gives way to warm spring days, I think about recipes that seem appropriate for warmer weather. Here are some old favorites as well as some newer recipes. In some of the recipes, you will use your convection microwave oven. In some, you will use your cooktop, and in some you will use your refrigerator.

mustard and mayonnaise ChickenThis is a simple recipe for chicken using only three ingredients which you will likely have on hand. 2 ½ - 3 pounds chicken pieces (I like to use legs, because we like dark meat)¼ cup spicy prepared mustard¼ cup mayonnaiseArrange chicken pieces skin side up on round baking pan, or directly on the Sharp convection oven turntable. Combine mustard and mayo and spread on pieces. Roast for 35 to 40 minutes on HIGH MIX or until chicken next to the bone is no longer pink.

spicy Potato WedgesThis recipe is a nice substitute for French fries or baked potatoes; great served with grilled meat.2 or 3 medium potatoes (red or baking)1 tablespoon olive oil½ teaspoon garlic powder½ teaspoon seasoned salt1 teaspoon sea saltScrub potatoes, leaving skin on. Cut into wedges. Toss with all ingredients. Place on baking sheet and bake in preheated 400˚ oven for about 20 minutes. Check and turn and bake for 15 minutes more. (Recipe is given for use of Sharp convection microwave — use convection setting.)

squash CasseroleThere are many variations of recipes using summer (yellow) squash. This is a good and easy one which my family loves. 4 cups sliced yellow squash ½ cup chopped onion 1 ½ cups water 4 tablespoons butter melted 1 sleeve buttery round crackers 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 teaspoon salt2 tablespoons butterBlack pepper to taste¾ cup milk2 eggs, beatenPreheat oven to 350˚. Place squash, onion, and water in a large skillet or pan. Place over medium heat and cook until squash is tender. Drain well. Lightly mash squash and stir in melted butter. In medium bowl, crush crackers and stir in cheese. (May crush crackers in zip plastic bag) Add salt and pepper. Stir half of cracker mixture into the squash mixture. In a small bowl, mix together milk and eggs. Pour into squash mixture and stir well. Pour into greased casserole dish, and top with remaining crumb mixture. Dot with remaining butter, and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until top is brown. This recipe works very well in your convection microwave.

Deviled eggsThis was one of the first dishes I learned to fix as a child. It is a tasty compliment to your Easter feast or to a sandwich for lunch.6 hard-boiled eggs2 tablespoons mayonnaise (may use a little more if needed for consistency)1 teaspoon prepared mustard1 scant teaspoon vinegar½ to 1 teaspoon salt¼ teaspoon paprikaseveral dashes of ground peppersweet pickle juice, to tastePeel eggs under running water. Slice each one in half, lengthwise. Place yolks on a plate and set aside the whites. Mash the yolks with a fork, making very small pieces. In a small bowl, combine mayo, mustard, vinegar, salt, paprika, and pepper. Stir in mashed yolks and whisk or beat until smooth. Carefully add pickle juice to taste….remember that pickle juice is not only sweet but salty, so go easy.

Stuff the cavity of the boiled egg white with the yolk mixture. An easy way to do this is to place the mixture in a small zip plastic bag, snip one corner of the bag, and use as you would a pastry bag, squeezing the mixture into each egg white. If desired, sprinkle paprika on each egg, and /or garnish with a green olive slice. Makes 12 pieces.

Butterfinger CakeThis cake was introduced to me by my daughter, Katie. It is a great cake to take to potluck suppers served right in the pan. 1 box devil’s food cake mix14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk12-ounce bottle caramel topping12 ounces whipped topping1 large Butterfinger bar, crushedPrepare cake according to package directions. Bake in a 9x13 inch baking dish or pan. Immediately after removing from oven, poke several holes in the top of the cake with a fork or skewer. Mix the condensed milk and the caramel together and pour slowly over the hot cake, spreading over the entire cake. Let cool completely, then cover and chill well. After the cake is completely chilled, spread the top with the whipped topping; sprinkle over all with the crushed Butterfinger bar. Serve in the pan.

lemon meringue (icebox) PieThis is another one of those old standby recipes that I learned as a very young cook; any Southern cook worth her salt knows how to fix a lemon pie! 1 graham cracker crust, ready-made or make your own14- or 15-ounce can sweetened condensed milk½ cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice2 egg yolks (save whites)Using an electric mixer, blend all ingredients until well-mixed. Pour into the crust. Make the meringue, whipping the egg whites until they are frothy. (Use electric mixer on high speed.) Add ¼ cup sugar, continuing to beat until soft peaks form. Mix in ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar, and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract.Spread over the top of the pie, sealing at the edges. Bake at 325˚ for about 15 minutes, or until the top is golden. Allow to cool and refrigerate to chill before serving.

Hummingbird CakeThis is an old recipe with a new twist. Instead of a traditional layer cake, we bake this cake in a Bundt pan. Same delicious ingredients, same delicious cream cheese icing – just a lot easier to fix.Cake: 1 ½ cups chopped pecans3 cups all-purpose flour2 cups sugar1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon ground cinnamon½ teaspoon salt3 large eggs, beaten1 ¾ cups mashed ripe bananas, (about 4)8-ounce can crushed pineapple, not drained¾ cup canola oil1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extractGlaze:4 ounces cream cheese, softened and cubed2 cups powdered sugar1 teaspoon vanilla extract1 to 2 tablespoons milkPrepare cake batter: Preheat oven to 350˚. Bake pecans in a single layer in a shallow pan for about 8 minutes, until toasted and fragrant. Stir after 4 minutes. In a large bowl, stir together dry ingredients. Gently stir in eggs and remaining wet ingredients. Mix only until moistened — do not over beat! Sprinkle 1 cup of pecans in the bottom of a greased and floured Bundt pan. Gently spoon batter over the pecans, using it all. Bake at 350˚ for 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. If using your Sharp convection microwave, use the LOW MIX setting and cook for about 40 minutes. Test for doneness: when a wooden skewer or pick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Cool cake on wire rack for 15 minutes before turning out of pan. Cool completely before glazing. Glaze: Using food processor or electric mixer, blend the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of milk. Blend until smooth; Use additional milk if needed for spreading consistency. Immediately pour glaze over cooled cake – slowly so that glaze won’t pool on the plate. Sprinkle with remaining pecans.

impressed with the Tiffin BrandThe Deleons Decide to Buy their First Class A The Allegro 34 TGA is the first Class A motorhome for Rey and Lydia Deleon, as well as Liza, their white Bichon. The Deleons have been RV and camping enthusiasts for about 20 years, owning a pop-up, a trailer, a fifth wheel and now a “beautiful motorhome.”  Says Rey: “The Tiffin brand has always caught my eye at the campgrounds we've been to but I always felt they were probably way out of our price range.  A few years ago we decided to start looking at Class A's and were thinking of buying used.We were really impressed with the quality of the Tiffin brand and realized that maybe a gas model would be doable. The 34 TGA was, we felt, the best model for our money.” The Deleons plan to live in their coach essentially full-time, since they love traveling and camping, meeting new people and visiting extended family. “We have children and grandchildren in Texas, North Carolina and Ohio so we'll be on the road lots. We love the Great Lakes area and will be doing lots of camping there, too.” To date, they haven't traveled far in their Allegro. Rey's first drive was six hours from the dealership west of Chicago to their home in Leipsic, Ohio. Lydia had her doubts as to how well Rey could handle the drive, but it was easier than both thought it would be.

TuRninG RADius, RoAD HAnDlinGAnD sTABiliTY

Pulling into parking lots, Rey was surprised at the close turning radius.  “It handled fairly well for being as tall as it is.  I had some wind and semi-trucks that pushed and pulled me a little, but I got used to it fairly quickly.”

PoWeR/ToRque The Deleons haven't driven any mountains yet, but will go through the Smokies and

Blue Ridge next month.  Rey says he notes plenty of power as he hit 70 mph very easily on the way home from the dealer. The brakes will take a little getting used to as they feel soft and he's not sure about them until he drives in mountains.

Rey is still learning the electronics end as far as how to run the home theater system,

but so far it has not been high on his list of what he needs to be doing right now.

We’ve been parked in my daughter's drive for a month and have weathered single-digit temps with below zero windchills and were fairly comfortable as long as we kept both furnaces going.  We haven’t had to use the air yet, but are confident two air conditioners will easily cool the unit.

WoRkABiliTY oF THe GAlleY Lydia feels that it had to be a man that designed the galley with probably not enough pantry space, but she really likes the beauty of it. She says that one of the three TVs could’ve been replaced with more pantry space. Rey says he is not complaining.

RVing Veterans Choose TiffinNo Better Place than Home on their Trips Jeff Wissmiller and Sherrilyn Benjamin of Cooksville, IL, say traveling in their Allegro 34 TGA is a hoot! They started RVing 11 years ago “basically because our extremely spoiled dog, Nicki, can't fly.” They love to travel to see family and friends, which is “so pleasurable now” in the Allegro. Jeff is a farmer, so he and Sherrilyn do most of their long trips in February when he is not in the fields. At other times, they are able to take a lot of three-day trips and check out state parks, see new sites and look for new places to eat. They enjoy campgrounds where “we can meet and mix with the other campers.” They stay in contact with “quite a few” nice people they have met.  Sherrilyn also enjoys using the motorhome for business trips, avoiding stays in hotels. As Sherrilyn notes, “You all know, there is no better place than home. Jeff and Nicki can stay in the motorhome watching one of the three 32-inch TVs.” Selling features for Sherrilyn and Jeff included the great windows, one-piece windshield and fabulous outside storage.  “No more looking around the wipers, getting hit in the head with a storage door or adjusting the window latch to keep wind noise out.  Love the thickness of the glass and fabulous latches that really work,” they say.

TuRninG RADius, RoAD HAnDlinGAnD sTABiliTY

Turning radius is what you would expect from a long wheelbase.

PoWeR/ToRque Jeff says he has always been a Chevy guy, but the Ford chassis drives and handles well. Power seems OK here in the flatlands. A 5-star tune might be something to consider.

Jeff changes oil and performs all maintenance. There's something about doing it yourself knowing it has been done right.  We are familiar with the functions and electronics because of our previous motorhome. There is plenty of information in the manuals that come with the motorhome.

noise leVel (both parked and moving) We are happy with the noise level in the coach. No noticeable wind noise at cruising speed. We don't hardly hear anything of the neighbors at the campground.

eFFiCienCY oF HeATinG AnDCoolinG sYsTems

We have driven 2,000 miles to California and used the furnace when we left Illinois and are running the AC here in California. The AC is very quiet and cools the rig fine. We like the two furnaces so we can keep the bedroom cooler than the front quarters

sPACiousness oF liVinG Room The coach comfortably seats five and allows the two of us to share our coach with friends and most importantly, Nicki has lots of room to play her favorite game of stuffed toy fetch. The motorhome is very spacious with the opposing slides in the living area

ATTRACTiVeness oF inTeRioR DeCoRATion The motorhome is very nicely appointed and we love the interior. The décor is not “busy” and lends itself to putting your own personal touch to it. With the addition of an area rug and other colorful pops of color it makes us very comfortable.  The wall sconces give just the right amount of filtered light.

WoRkABiliTY oF THe GAlleY The galley is spacious and gives plenty of counter room with a great solid surface and back splash.

ComFoRT AnD usABiliTY oF THe BATHRoom This bath has good-sized shower with a ledge to put your foot on. Two sinks let us do our own things at the same time. Lots of room for Sherry to do what women do in front of the mirror.

Tiffin Gets a Blue Ribbon for the

sarasota Buddy Rally Mix nearly 250 motorhomes with some good food and excellent entertainment and you have the foundation for a successful motorhome rally. Add in a display featuring more than 30 new Tiffin Motorhomes and it’s easy to see why Tiffin’s Sarasota Buddy Rally was a popular one. Tiffin’s Sarasota Buddy Rally was held in early March at the Sarasota Fairgrounds and was promoted as a way for Tiffin owners to introduce their friends who might drive other brands to the Tiffin brand. The rally was also held in conjunction with Tiffin’s 40th anniversary celebration. While Tiffin owners still far outnumbered those driving other brands or fifth-wheels, it was easy to pick up on the excitement of the rally held during beautiful Sarasota weather where temperatures stayed in the 80-degree range. And dealers and other organizers involved said that the Buddy Rally is a concept Tiffin can expand on in the future. “I think it went great,” said Tammy Lull, inventory supervisor for Lazydays, one of two dealerships that participated in the show along with North Trail RV. “Everything went great and everyone at Tiffin was very helpful. I had not been in any other Tiffin rallies, but everyone seemed to be enjoying it. I saw quite a few folks with first-time Tiffin ribbons and we had a great number to turn out.” One of the reasons for that great number can be attributed to the number of new Tiffin Motorhomes on display. At some rallies, Tiffin may have up to five motorhomes on display. At the Sarasota show, 31 brand new Tiffins formed an impressive square on the parking lot of the fairgrounds. The show included not only all of the Allegro brands, but Phaetons and a brand new 2013 Zephyr as well. “The time of year provided us with

something like that. There was a lot of cheering going on for the service guys and the work they did.” Joe Jackson, sales manager at North Trail

beautiful weather and everyone really enjoyed the facility,” said Tiffin National Sales Manager Jerry Williamson. “But customers were going on and on about the fact that we had 31 new Tiffins on display and how cool it was to see that many Tiffin motorhomes there in one area.” Williamson agreed that the Buddy Rally concept is something that Tiffin can explore more in the future. “The largest rally we’ve ever been involved with is 150 coaches, so this was a totally different kind of rally,” he said. “This one was far larger. It was in a larger market, so it drew people from the outside, not just RV owners. There was really a whole lot to like about it.” Tiffin rigs accounted for the majority of the motorhomes at the Buddy Rally, but there were still a couple dozen other brands in attendance. This enabled the dealerships to introduce RVers to the Tiffin experience. “Tiffin did not discriminate against any other brand,” Williamson said. “In fact, we welcomed and embraced other brands. Customers were reporting it was a great selection of product and some great deals being offered. “We also want those motorhome owners who don’t have a manufacturer to support them and want to help those folks find a home. We were not only promoting Tiffin, but promoting the lifestyle of the industry.” As at all Tiffin rallies, one way Tiffin promotes is through outstanding customer service. Technicians from Tiffin, Lazydays and North Trail serviced everyone that had minor issues for repair during the rally. “More than 200 units were serviced,” said Williamson. “On Saturday, even Danny Inman, a 30-year Tiffin sales employee, was out there working on units and fixing them right. Only at Tiffin would you find

RV, had never worked a Tiffin Buddy Rally before, but was also impressed with the turnout and reaction from RVers. “It was definitely impressive with the number of Tiffin coaches that were there and a great way to get the Tiffin name out there,” Jackson said. “I’ve never been to a rally with that many coaches and people were impressed with the way Tiffin takes care of everybody.” With 250 coaches, that also meant that organizers had more than 500 people to feed and entertain. In addition to positive comments on the food, the entertainment was also welcomed. The highlight of the rally was a performance by the popular country music group, the Bellamy Brothers. In addition, there were a number of seminars,

in addition to vendors displaying their products. There was even a chainsawing exhibition by Tiffin’s own Tom Webber. Williamson also praised the organizational efforts of Jimmy Johnson and Cynthia Skinner from the Allegro Club. “The Bellamy Brothers got a standing ovation,” said Williamson. “And the food and the service were great. One night, dinner was at 6 and by 6:27 all of the dessert had been served. The volunteers were all true Tiffin folks and greeted everyone with a smile even though the temperatures were near 90 degrees. “RVers were also praising Tiffin on our organization of parking, which was handled great by the volunteers.”

Willamson said 90 percent of the rigs were parked in a six-hour period, with RVers set up with 30-amp service. Johnson, president of Tiffin’s Allegro Club that coordinated the rally, also credited great volunteer efforts for helping the large rally go smoothly. “Thanks to some very industrious volunteers, it went very well,” Johnson said. “All the comments were all very positive – about the parking, food, entertainment and the facility. And the Tiffin display we had out front was very impressive and large enough that it drew a lot of attention. Overall, the rally was a huge success and something that I’m sure we’ll try to do similar in the future.”

Like a turtle, wherever you go, your home goes, too. Never having camped in an RV, we moved from our home into full-time motorhome living. The adjustment was surprisingly smooth. We had carefully chosen our necessary and favorite items. The smaller living space proved adequate and can be organized and cleaned in a jiffy. Dixie, our 6-year-old lab, took a couple of weeks to understand that her backyard would be changing on a regular basis but she remains quite content. We embraced the Tiffin slogan “Roughing it Smoothly.” We do miss our friends and family but with the Internet and Skype, it is easy to stay connected with loved ones wherever you may be trekking. With the exception of a couple of sites, we’ve had easy access to WiFi everywhere. We did acquire an American MiFi mobile hotspot and cell phone. I guess it depends on your hobbies, but we have all of ours on board. We have plenty of room in CC Rider, our Allegro RED, to store everything. Along our trip we have downsized clothing, cookware and books, donating them to charity or mailing special items home. We also abide by our agreement that if we buy something new, we get rid of something old so that our RV weight stays in check. With a little planning, it’s easy to stock up on food, hardware, medical or camping needs in towns along the way. Laundry is taken care of in our motorhome or at the campground facilities. When we are dry camping we have to be mindful of wasting water and conserving energy but it is so easy to adapt. It would be impossible without our solar panels. Our strategically placed LED light bulbs inside the RV and our Coleman rechargeable LED lamp with four removable panels provide lighting for cooking, reading and various nighttime activities. We also invent little tricks like closing the vents at sunset and leaving the coffee mugs on the dashboard to warm up for morning. There are unexpected events wherever you live.  When I broke my foot while hiking in Oregon, I received great medical attention and follow-up appointments in other states were very accessible. We discovered a cyst on Dixie, which a local vet diagnosed as cancerous and surgically removed it the very next day. All the information was faxed to her vet back in Ontario. He followed up with a call to us. On our trip we have had a few significant repairs that needed attention. The Tiffin people were great in directing us to the appropriate specialists who had experience with Tiffin motorhomes. Phil Hollingsworth, the West Coast Tiffin representative, followed our work orders and gave us great support. Our RV was new, so repairs were under warranty. I guess we were surprised that a new vehicle would need work and we were frustrated while waiting for the work to be done. Once we changed our mindset to accept that problems would be a part of our journey, we started making better use of our days. For example, in Auburn, California, we took a day trip along

Caron Tindale, her husband, Chris Bull, and Dixie, their Labrador Retriever, lived in Newmarket, Ontario, before moving from their two-story, four-bedroom home into their Allegro RED for a life of full-time RVing. We will follow their adventures through Caron’s words and Chris’ photos. You can also check out her blog at http://ccanddixie.blogspot.com/.

A newfound FreedomLiving the RV Life Every Day

the mountains roads near Lake Tahoe where we saw lots of snow and folks skiing. We toured Reno where we enjoyed a great auto museum, an authentic barbecue lunch and a few slot machines. Another day we explored downtown historic Sacramento, including the amazing Railway Museum. We shared a few meals and commiserated with a lovely couple we met who were waiting for RV repairs as well. We have both adjusted easily to retirement and find plenty of activities to enjoy on our road trip. I admit, I was apprehensive about living so close together for an extended period of time, but I’ve never felt claustrophobic in the motorhome even during bad weather. One thing I overlooked was our proximity to nature and how much time we would be spending outdoors. We love it and so does Dixie. The major difference in motorhome living is the freedom from the chores of the property owner. We have no lawn to cut, leaves to rake and no snow to shovel. There are no renovations or decorating or maintenance or replacement of major structures or appliances. Of course the cost of heating, cooling and repairing a home is much greater so our savings can be used for extras for the coach, such as our recent purchase of a flagpole and new towing-braking system for our toad. The bills and paperwork, especially junk mail, are minimal. We are lucky to have our in-laws collecting any mail that cannot be dealt with electronically. They send us a package every couple of months. I do miss my gardens but I know I will have them again later in life and keep my thumb green by studying the plants we encounter on our travels. I also have a passion for rocks and cannot resist collecting them everywhere we walk. They are too heavy to keep in

the motorhome and expensive to mail. I have been photographing many of them and keeping just a few superlative specimens. The most obvious difference about living full-time in our Allegro RED is that we are constantly on the move. There is always the option of staying a day, or a week or longer if we need to explore the area more. We have had such incredible experiences and have seen so many amazing things that we often ask ourselves if we are in a dream. There are so many places to visit, we know that we can see them another time. That is the joy of living the RV life! Tune in to our blog if you’d like to follow our travels: http://ccanddixie.blogspot.com/ I keep a daily journal but only blog every couple of weeks. Here are a few highlights: Revelstoke, B.C.: We woke up to a chilly 44 degrees Fahrenheit. We travelled through mountains wrapped in rain clouds, then suddenly broke into farmland, sunshine and rough hewn hills covered in scraggly brush as we entered the Okanagan Valley. Temperatures were in the high 70s. We spent a few days in Oliver, the wine capital of Canada. Lake Okanagan is a gorgeous source of moisture for the peach, apple and pear orchards and the wall-to-wall vineyards. Hiking the desert-like hills was challenging but we did enjoy our sightings, including mule deer, quail, grouse and bears. Vancouver, B.C.: In Granville Market, seaside farmers' stands and prepared foods stretch many aisles inside the old building. Of particular interest for the palette and olfactory senses were the amazing shellfish, salmon and haddock; incredible cheeses; brilliant flower stands and fresh fruit and veggies featuring "giant" grapes as well as fresh figs and dates. (Oh, and for the meat lovers: myriads of sausage, steaks, pate and Scottish bacon.) The narrow streets around the market housed

artists and craftspeople of all sorts. Dixie joined us for a beer sampling at the Granville Brewery, but chose H2O as her beverage of choice. Crescent City, CA: We set up CC Rider facing a sheltered bay of the Pacific. We settled in our lawn chairs at the beach's edge to watch the clammers  digging and slowly filling their pails, myriad seabirds floating on the surf or gliding above it and Sunday afternoon families strolling on the beach or fishing from the pier. A lighthouse flashed a warning light out to sea at 30-second intervals. The temperature dropped and the wind picked up as the sun descended. The sunset was Class A with oranges, pinks and purples laying down magenta streaks across the turquoise water. San Francisco: When Dixie got tired we gave her dinner and set her up to nap in the car. As she went to dreamland, we went on a cable car ride uptown. I needed to sit with my booted foot but Chris stood up and "hung out" in true, San Fran tourist style. The ride was exhilarating, bumpy, loud and smelly – oil and burning brakes. The cable car afforded amazing views down the steep roads, across at the retro signage on restaurants and shops and up to views of the intricate architectural details above our heads. Death Valley, CA: On New Year's Day, we moved to Furnace Creek Campground. There were a few more trees there but under foot was all sand. Out of CC's windshield we had a great view of some rounded sedimentary hills that looked like giant vanilla cakes streaked with chocolate. A scenic drive took us from below sea level to 5,475 feet above at Dante's View. From there, one could look out over the entire valley, down on the salt flats and across to the Amoragosa Mountain Range. Where will we travel tomorrow? Watch for the next article for updates from Caron, Chris and Dixie in CC Rider.

CHAPTeR CHATTeR

CAmPGRounDs The Columbia River Allegros say thumbs-up to the RV Park at the River in Joseph, Ore., for its very pretty setting, excellent clubhouse, and pet-friendly policy. Betabel RV Park in San Juan Bautista, Calif., draws the praise of the Gold Rush Allegros of Northern California. The park has about 180 pull-through and back-in spaces with concrete pads, 50- or 30-amp service, sewer, water and 17-channel cable TV. The park is five miles south of Gilroy and less than 30 minutes from most Monterey

Bay coastal cities. The park is clean and well maintained with a friendly staff. There are three clubhouses, pool, spa, bocce ball court, horseshoe pits and a basketball area.

The chapter dubs it an ideal location at a reasonable price for visits to the central coast and garden-fresh Salinas Valley. The chapter also favors 49er RV Ranch in Columbia, Calif., near the heart of the Mother Lode. The park has a rustic decor with about 50 full hookup, 50-amp sites. Driveways are paved, sites are graveled, but get there early for a space that will suit your 40-footer. The clubhouse is spacious, plus there's a gazebo, dog run, campfire area and friendly staff. In Jackson, Calif., the chapter stayed at Jackson Rancheria RV Park, one of four parks picked by Good Sam as best in the country. It's fairly new, has wide concrete pads and full hookups surrounded by lush greenery, a large and luxurious clubhouse, full kitchen, outside barbecue, pool, two spas and a shuttle to the casino and downtown. The Oregon RoVers agree that Icicle River RV Resort near Leavenworth, Wash., was a great choice. It is pleasantly laid out and convenient to a shuttle route for other activities.

ResTAuRAnTs Try the Catfish Kitchen in Paducah, Ky., on the advice of the Bluegrass State Allegros. It's a great place for fish or chicken. If you have any hush puppies left over, take them outside to feed the fish in the lake. The Gold Rush Allegros recommend the Jardines de San Juan in San Bautista, Calif., as a very nice Mexican restaurant with outdoor and indoor seating in a lush and colorful garden setting. The chapter also likes Jalisco, another Mexican eatery in Watsonville, Calif., with excellent

cuisine and service in a Spanish Mission style building. Phil's Fish Market at Moss Landing offers great and generous seafood dishes, as does the Wharf at Monterey.

When in Columbia, Calif., the chapter recommends City Hotel, a restored historic building with four-star dining. In Jackson, Calif., try Jackson Rancheria Casino Buffet, especially for Thursday and Friday night specials. Patti's Restaurant in Paducah, Ky., offers good food, especially pies, so save room for dessert, say the Bluegrass State Allegros. When in Joseph, Ore., the Columbia River Allegros steer you toward Outlaw, Embers Brewhouse, and the 100-year-old Imnaha Store and Tavern. The Pelican Allegros of Louisiana tout the crab cakes and the signature Pasta Des Amis at Cafe Des Amis in Breaux Bridge, La. The verdict: fantastic. In Maurepas, La., the chapter discovered Val's Marina with bayou treats including crab, shrimp and fish fixed many ways. The chapter calls this a hidden treasure, but warns that you will waddle away. Cajuns love to eat well, so we will allow the chapter two more

recommendation: Breaud's in Natchez, Miss., where the food was fabulous and everyone savored the flavors that abound; and King's Tavern in one of the oldest buildings in Natchez, famed for steaks and seafood.

DesTinATion ATTRACTions The Sun Diego Allegros trekked to Quartzsite, Ariz., provisioned with water, food and good intentions to conserve resources. Members enjoyed watching battery-operated planes, taking

Jeep outings and watching the moon, planets, nebulae and comets through a telescope. Old Mission San Juan Bautista, founded in 1797 was a popular

tour site for the Gold Rush Allegros. The state historic site tells the early history of missions and early settlers as well as early California (1859-1890) lifestyles. In Jamestown, Calif., the chapter enjoyed tours of Historic Rail Town with several steam engines, a roundhouse and displays of rail cars and movie props. In Jackson, gold country comes to life in mine tours and historic buildings. Wineries abound nearby. The Bluegrass State Allegros split up -- at least for a day. Many women went to the quilt museum in Paducah, which featured the 2011 show winner. Many of the men opted for the locomotive rebuild shop tour, showing engine building, locomotive rebuilding and nee locomotive building areas. The Lucky 7 Allegros have purple feet. That happened at the Pahrump Valley Winery in the Mojave Desert. In addition to the grape stomping, the chapter

enjoyed wine tasting and buying a few bottles for later. The historic Dunleith home and grounds in Natchez, Miss., was a great tour pick, according to the Pelican Allegros. Other antebellum homes are nearby as well. The Columbia River Allegros want to fill your waking hours in Joseph, Ore., with these picks: Wallowa Lake Tramway for excellent views and hiking trails with excellent food at the Summit Grill; Hat Point Lookout for overlooks of the Snake River and Hells Canyon; the Valley Bronze Factory, which produced the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C.; and tours of three breweries and distilleries: Terminal Gravity, Mutiny Brewery and Stein Distillery.

RAllY RePoRT

The Northeast Tiffin Rally at Normandy Farms Family Camping Resort in Foxboro, Mass., was the place to be last September. Normandy Farms (www.normandyfarms.com) is a true resort and gated facility with large drive-through sites, 50 amp service, cable TV, WiFi, very large recreation lodge, indoor and outdoor heated pools, jacuzzis, stocked trout pond, ball fields, disc golf, a well-stocked store/gift shop, arcade, fitness center, creative arts center, and many other amenities. It’s also close to hundreds of other places of interest. The rally was sold out and all families in the 132 Tiffin coaches anticipated having a great time. It was just that, and more. Folks from all across the country and Canada were all happy campers for five days. Monday afternoon started with registration, which was just before an afternoon meet and greet opportunity. Everyone congregated at the Campers Inn display of Tiffin new and used motor homes. Allegro Club President Jimmy Johnson welcomed everyone and thanked all those involved in organizing this great rally with special recognition for the Nutmeg Allegro group, which helped out with many of the activities. Jimmy and his wife, Gail, are recognized as true leaders and we thank them for all the hard work in organizing Allegro Club rallies. Tuesday, large numbers of participants attended the informational seminars, which were a wealth of information. Most of the folks who presented seminars also came to our rigs to help with problems and answer questions. Wednesday, everyone boarded five buses for a tour through the historical district in Providence, Rhode Island. Each bus had a tour guide who explained everything there was to know about the history of the area, including how buildings were renovated to look the same as they were in the past. After the Providence tour, we took a large catamaran boat for a 90-minute, 10-lighthouse tour of Narragansett Bay. This area of the U.S. is just loaded with history. It was a beautiful clear day and the weather was in our favor for most of the week. Everything about this rally was first class. All the catered meals were absolutely delicious and served in a professional fashion, and we were treated to great entertainment in the evenings that left plenty of smiles. Bob Tiffin and his wife, Judy, also attended and everyone got a chance to say hello, ask questions, and wish them well. They are always so pleasant to talk to and Bob is very attentive to what his customers have to say. That’s just one of the many attributes that makes him a giant in the RV industry. Another great Tiffin personality, Tom Webber, ran the bingo game

and told many wild and crazy jokes to keep us all laughing. Tom also spoke about Bob’s persona, the importance of customer satisfaction, and Bob’s leadership in the RV industry. Tom also gave us insight on what’s happening in Red Bay and all the new features in the lineup of 2012 motor homes, including the new induction cooktop for the all-electric coaches. Bob Tiffin authorized 30 free oil and filter changes for Onan generators, which were done right at the camp sites. Mechanics from Campers Inn, along with two Tiffin technicians, did minor repairs on all the coaches. Also helping out this year was Donald Mikolajcik of Connecticut Motor Cars & Coaches, in Plainville, CT. Don has recently been designated as an authorized Tiffin service center. He specializes in and only repairs Tiffin motorhomes. Don and his wife, Maureen, love camping in their Allegro Bus. As Terri and I travel around the country, we try to speak to as many Tiffin owners as possible. I’m always on the lookout and find them mostly at campgrounds, but also at rest areas and fuel stops. We have met some wonderful folks and have made many friends. As I entered Normandy Farms and viewed row after row after row of Tiffin motorhomes, I was overwhelmed. My immediate response to Terri was, “How am I going to talk to all these people?” I’m sorry we didn’t get the chance to meet all of you. Everyone was so friendly and it was nice to see those who were at this same Allegro Rally in 2009. I urge everyone to try and attend one or as many rallies you can. You just can’t beat the friendly atmosphere and all the Tiffin families who make it a worthwhile event. Hopefully, we will get to meet some of you again down the road. If you see a Phaeton that has the lettering “She’s Happy - He’s Lucky”, please stop to say hello. We would love to meet you and swap TMH stories. Happy Trails.

Now you can cook your food in half the time while reducing the heat output in your coach with the new induction cooktop featured on the 2012 Allegro Bus from Tiffin Motorhomes. The two-burner induction cooktop – the SINC2220 from Summit – is available on the all-electric floor plans of the Allegro Bus. The induction cooktop instantly heats to cook in half the time of standard gas and electric ranges. The cooktop requires induction cookware to produce magnetically-generated heat. The Allegro Bus cooktop includes a complimentary seven-piece set of induction cookware. The collection includes three pots with heat-resistant glass lids and one 9 ½ inch skillet. The cookware is safe for use on induction, gas, and electric heat surfaces, as well as for use in dishwashers and ovens. The smooth, black-glass surface produces electromagnetic heat, so the temperature of the surface does not get nearly as hot as traditional gas or electric elements. There are no open flames or released gas. “The glass surface does not conduct heat and the only heat it will retain is from the cookware,” says Jerry Williamson, National Sales Manager for Tiffin Motorhomes. “That means you’re not heating up your motorhome while cooking. It also makes it easier to clean up as food won’t stick or get baked onto the cooktop. Summit’s induction cooktops bring the superior performance of upscale restaurant cooking into your motorhome.” With most heat sent directly to the cookware, the cooking surface remains fairly cool to the touch. Designed for the highest-quality cooking experience, the SINC2220 is fully equipped for safety with a child lock, automatic safety switch-off, and a residual heat indicator. Beveled edges blend seamlessly into your countertop. The induction cooktop has 3100 watts of total power, with 10 power levels and digital displays that give you precise control of the heating temperature. The 2012 Allegro Bus is available in 36-, 40-, and 43-foot floor plans. For more information on the 2012 Allegro Bus, visit www.tiffinmotorhomes.com/allegro-bus/overview.

Tiffin Motorhomes Inc. finished 2011 as the nation’s No. 1 manufacturer of Class A motorhomes. For the year, Tiffin led all other recreational vehicle manufacturers with a 21.1 percent share of the Class A market. That was up from Tiffin’s 17.9 percent share in 2010. “We appreciate the collaborative effort of our dealers and manufacturing team, and our loyal following from the Tiffin Motorhomes family of coach owners,” said General Manager Tim Tiffin. A family-owned business, Tiffin is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Its brands include the Allegro, Allegro RED, Allegro Breeze, Phaeton, Allegro Bus and Zephyr, available through a network of dealers throughout the U.S. and Canada. The option is also available on the new 36 Allegro LA floor plan. “The early response on the fireplace option has been excellent and the fact that we’ve been pre-selling units before they arrive on dealer lots indicates strong demand,” Williamson said. “It gives the motorhome more of a ‘home away from home’ feeling and you can also heat the coach with the fireplace, which saves on propane.” Tiffin is also introducing two new floor plans for 2012. In addition to the Allegro 36 LA, there’s the Phaeton 42 LH. The 36 LA is Tiffin’s only gas product with an option for a washer and dryer, which is something customers have requested, according to Williamson. It also offers a

large rear bath as it has the popular bath-and-a-half. An L-shaped sofa is standard, along with a recliner and ottoman. “It offers a lot of unique features that would be found on a more luxurious coach, but still at the Allegro price point,” said Williamson. The 36 Allegro LA MSRP starts at $128,940. The 42 LH offers another unique Tiffin feature, as the dinette table is on the passenger side. “The dinette table is on the driver’s side on every other Phaeton we build,” Williamson said. “Moving the dinette gives a little more openness to the floor plan and gives you a great view at most campsites. Again, this is something our customers have asked for.” The L-shaped sofa is standard, while customers have the option of choosing two leather lift recliners or a sofa bed. “It’s a neat coach for entertaining a big crew or for just two people,” said Williamson. The MSRP of the 42 LH Phaeton starts at $308,000.

In 1996, Lazydays RV moved into its 126-acre SuperCenter, which has more than 1,000 motorized and towable RVs on display, 273 service bays and a 300-site RV park. The other Top Tiffin Dealers for 2011 are mike Thompson's RV super stores in Santa Fe Springs, Calif.; la mesa RV in San Diego, Calif.; north Trail RV Center in Fort Myers, Fla.; Dixie RV superstores in Hammond, La.; Vogt RV Centers usA in Fort Worth, Texas; Bankston motor Homes in Huntsville, Ala.; Colton RV in North Tonawanda, N.Y.; Horizon lussier, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; and Demontrond RV in Houston, Texas.

RV dealers nationwide have once again ranked Tiffin Motorhomes in an elite class for design, reliability, quality, value and competitive pricing. For the eighth consecutive year, the Recreational Vehicle Dealers Association (RVDA) has honored Tiffin with the prestigious Quality Circle Award. Dealers singled out only five U.S. Class A RV manufacturers for the 2011 award, based on a formal survey of dealer satisfaction. The award, Tiffin’s 13th overall, is based on RVDA’s 18th annual Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) survey. To qualify for the Quality Circle Award, brands/manufacturers must receive at least 15 dealer responses and score 80 percent or above in overall dealer satisfaction. On a five-point scale, with five being outstanding, Tiffin’s average score was 4.73. The overall motorized industry average was 4.15. Tiffin, founded in Red Bay, Alabama, in 1972, is a leading Class A motorhome manufacturer with brands that include the Allegro, Allegro RED, Allegro Breeze, Phaeton, Allegro Bus and Zephyr. Tiffin's Phaeton diesel pusher has been the best-selling Class A coach for the past three years, followed closely by Tiffin's upscale Allegro Bus. “We are humbled by the high marks we continue to receive from dealers, but the Quality Circle Award represents close communication, mutual respect and strong partnerships between Tiffin Motorhomes and dealers,” said General Manager Tim Tiffin. “We use the dealer satisfaction survey results to learn how we and our dealers can better serve our customers. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary in 2012, we remain dedicated to building the best motorhomes in the industry for our dealers and customers.” Tiffin’s ratings significantly exceeded the motorized industry average in eight survey categories, which include: • Salessupport • Salesterritory • Vehicledesign • Vehiclereliability/quality • Competitiveprice/value • Partssupport • Dealershipwarrantysupport • Overalldealercommunications

A total of 484 dealers in the U.S. and Canada responded to this year’s survey with more than 2,500 ratings. RVDA asks dealers to express their level of satisfaction with their manufacturers and brands through the confidential survey. CHeCk YouR TiRes From time to time, we have customers who have blowouts. Make sure you routinely check your tire pressure on your tires and watch for wear on the tread.

CleAninG TiP For those bugs that are on the front of your motorhome that you need to give some extra scrubbing power without scratching the Diamond Shield, wet a small piece of carpet about the size of your hand. Use the soft side of it to scrub the bug areas. The wet carpet is just a bit stiffer than a wet towel, but still soft enough not to damage the Diamond Shield.

on ouR BReeZe uniTs We have had several calls about the two red leveling lights located on the dash in the driver cockpit area. The hard reset switch (left) will have a flashing red light if the leveling system needs to be re-leveled. The master warning light (right) will glow a solid red light one the leveling system has been activated.
