Page 2: Tidings Sept Nov 2013

Dear friends,

You will see that the format of Tidings has changed to facilitate better planning and a morelogical division of the Church’s year. We are moving to a quarterly edition of Tidings:September – November, December – February, March – May, and June – August.

In our Sunday services this month we begin a new series taking a fresh look at the Sermonon the Mount. It has been described as the greatest teaching to ever fall from the lips of ahuman being. Jesus takes the wisdom of Scripture and applies it to everyday life. At times itis comforting, more often it is challenging, but it is always life affirming for those who haveears to hear. Personally, I need all the help I can get to become a better person, to buildmeaningful relationships and to make a positive contribution to the community in which Ilive and work. But more importantly still, I want to learn how to be a citizen of God’skingdom. Perhaps this is what the Sermon on the Mount is really about – learning to livewith God. I look forward to exploring this adventure together in the weeks ahead.

Every blessing for a fruitful and peaceful September, William

A Word from the Curate…

What a wonderful time of year this is - a time when we celebrate the Harvest Festival. Forthose of us fortunate enough to have grown up in the country or to have relations who liveoutside the city, the word Harvest is synonymous with the smells and colours of theproduce of the ‘land’. The Harvest is the ‘end result’ of the preparation, sowing, labour andcare that has been given to each particular crop or fruit or vegetable. In other words, thereaping of what we sow. This also applies to our own faith journey.

August and September are times of ‘Harvesting’ for many young people throughout ourisland when they receive the results of their labour and study for the Leaving and JuniorCertificate Examinations. In each case, it is all too easy to simply consider that theachievements and results are solely as a result of the number of years spent in secondaryschool. In reality they are a combination of all the formal years of schooling to the date ofthe respective examinations in addition to the learning in the home and from life itself. These are trying and testing times for the young people of our nation who hunger for oursupport and prayers.

St Luke’s Gospel chapter 12 v 16 to 34 recountsthe parable of the rich fool and worrying aboutearthly treasure. “ I’ll say to myself - You haveplenty of good things laid up for many years. Takelife easy, eat, drink and be merry” For anyoneunfamiliar with God’s response perhaps you maywish to read the quoted passage. There is muchfor all of us to reflect upon in these verses.

In addition to celebrating the Harvest Festival atSt Matthias, I urge those who have theopportunity, to visit a rural parish, whether in ourown united diocese of Dublin and Glendaloughor farther afield. Such an attendance will be arichly rewarding experience.

At the end of this month I will be movingto England to work in a church calledSaint James Gerrards Cross (OxfordDiocese) as a Youth Ministry Assistant.

I completed a course in youth work at theend of April and really enjoyed helping outwith the children's and young people'swork here at St Matthias’, and so amhoping that this next step will offer methe opportunity to learn more and gainmore experience. I am also hoping toapply to do a degree in practical theologyand that would be as the next step once Ihave completed this year. The course I amhoping to do would also require me tohave a placement in a church and so whenI return next August I will be looking for achurch to work in alongside the collegecourse.

I have loved being part of St Matthias’ andam so grateful for the opportunities I havebeen given here. It's been great getting toknow everyone and I will continue toconsider St Matthias’ my home church. I'll look forward to coming back in theholidays and seeing everyone and wouldreally appreciate your prayers as I takethis next step.

St Matthias' Sunday Club is looking forward to welcoming back all children from JuniorInfants to 6th class on Sunday 8th September. It will be great to be back together althoughwe will really miss Rachel's leadership. This term we hope to have an exciting and variedprogramme and increase our participation in the services in church. We will also be bringingthe children back into church in time to join their families for communion. Please comealong and join us. As always, any parents who are able to help on a rota are most welcome, please contact Tanya Olhausen (0852382375) for details, Garda Vetting etc.

Shameela Lyons under the spotlight

Shameela is married to Gar and has three young daughters, Mia, Abi and Jasmine. She is the Infant teacher in Booterstown National School.

Where do you live?I live in Druid Valley in Cherrywood.

How long have you been attending St Matthias? We have been attending St. Matthias since February 2012. Following a car accident we had no car to get us to our previous church, Taney, and we decided to walk to St. Matthias. The intimate and warm atmosphere we felt and continue to feel in St. Matthias is really special and we've been attending ever since!

What do you like most about St Matthias?I love the way in which God's word is sincerely expressed and how I can feel God'spresence in St Matthias. It revitalises me and redirects me to what is reallyimportant in life.

If you were the Rector, what is the one thing you would like to change? Spreading Christ's word in to-day's world is not without its challenges! Havingsuch beautiful experiences in St Matthias has enriched my spiritual life greatly. Ifeel stronger, more content with myself and secure in God's shroud. I wouldlove to see more people joining us in Sunday worship

What is your favourite hymn or gospel song and why?My favourite hymn is Here I am Lord.It is such a moving and humbling hymn. I feel it brings us back to basics as ittells of human suffering and the flawed human nature we all possess. YetGod's love triumphs and forgives and I can feel that love so strongly when Ising the words of this hymn.

How did you get your faith and what is faith to you?Attending Taney Church was always very special to me and I felt my faithevolving there. Canon Sinnamon was instrumental in inspiring me tofortify my faith and his love of God and people alike drew me toexplore my relationship with God.My faith is my rock. It is a feeling I find hard to express but without itlife would be difficult. I find solace, peace, calm and love in my faithand with this in my life I feel better equipped to face the toughtimes. It grounds me and protects me. It takes away my fears.

Do you ever feel close to God? When do you feel close to God? What do you do to feel close to God?I feel close to God when I have quiet time. I have a book called‘Jesus Calling’ which has daily devotions that bring me close toGod. I would like to feel more of that peace at the busy andstressful times of my day so I am trying to talk to God at thesetimes too! Thanking God for all my life's blessings brings meclose to God. I can feel God's presence when walking on abeach or up a hill. And as mentioned above I feel God'spresence in St Matthias.

Shameela Lyons

1920’s Themed Church Social

A fantastic evening was had by all in May. Around 100 people arrived in their fantastic stepback in time 1920’s style outfits to a decorated church hall. The atmosphere was nothingshort of electric. A tasty meal with a choice of two hot dishes was provided, accompaniedby plenty of salads and rolls, etc. followed by dessert and tea or coffee.

Jhil Quinn’s Rhythm & Roots Band provided an outstanding selection of live music andentertainment. We were also treated to a demonstration of 1920’s dance moves, whicheveryone enthusiastically aimed to replicate on the dance floor and thoroughly enjoyed. The dancing continued till late and there was a raffle and prizes given for the best dressedman and woman.

As it was such a successful evening it was suggested that we have another next year. So rollon next year’s social ‘1920s + 1’ !!!!!

A special note of thanks to everyone who helped out and worked so hard to make theevening so enjoyable and successful.

Adrienne Bedell.

Parish News

William (Bill) Blackall reflects on publishing his first novel

The idea of writing a book never entered myhead until my doctor suggested I do sofollowing a high blood pressure attack. “It willtake your mind off things,” he said.

And goodness was he right!

Once I started writing consumed all mywaking hours. Don’t get me wrong, it was notan obsession. Instead it gave me a feeling ofintense satisfaction.

How to start seemed an insurmountablequandary: what would I write about? (Here Iwould suggest one should write about whatis familiar to you, something that you haveexperienced or heard about. Too manywriters fabricate stories with the result thatthey don’t have depth and seem glaringlyartificial.)

I eventually settled on a children’s bookbecause it was shorter than a novel. Luckily ajournalist friend, the late Barbara Dicksonwho was a parishioner of St. Mathias, offeredto help me, to steer me along the path so tospeak by editing and constructive criticism.Writing without such guidance can be akinto be stuck in a maze!

After days, months and a few years ofenjoyable work, the novel was completed inthe sense that for most writers, a work isnever truly completed.

Now began the most difficult chore...how toget it published!

I did acquire a literary agent in London andhe sent out my novel to various publisherswithout success, for being published is ineffect a matter of luck, to catch the editor’seye. Look how many times now famousauthors received rejection slips!

And so I published my novels onAmazon/Kindle - I had written two by then.

My novels are selling and that gives me aquiet sense of satisfaction. My present task ispromoting my work, which because ofshortage of space, will have to wait untilanother time.

William Blackall lives in Glasthule and is amember of St Matthias

St. Matthias’ Fête 2013

This year several new things were tried to make the running of the fête easier. Not allworked as well as perhaps we hoped, but many lessons were learned, and will be takenforward for next year…..a great innovation that was much appreciated, was breakfast andrefreshments for the stall holders and helpers (needs some refinement, but was generally agreat success)! I would like to thank all the stall holders and their helpers for the sterlingwork they did on the day, as well as in the week leading up to the great day…but it wouldn’thave happened without the unsung heroes who delivered notices (and refreshments),collected goods and donations, worked on the finances, put up tents, tables, barriers, bunting, signs, and posters! In all, I think about a third of parishioners (and non-parish friends) workedin some capacity. When you consider the economic climate, it is thanks to their magnificentefforts, that such an amazing total of funds was achieved! Well done everyone!

Debbie Wilson, Fête Co-ordinator

Cake Stall - A Big Thank You!On behalf of the cake stall committee, I would like to thank everyone whomade and donated cakes, buns, scones, etc. to the cake stall. The stall was agreat success, with plenty of tasty goodies to sell on the day the fête.

I would also like to thank the cake stall committee members, not only fortheir help at the fête, but also for their continued support and baking for the cake sales held on the first Sunday of every month throughout the year.

Thank you all so much, Adrienne Bedell.
