By Samantha Weaver• It was 20th-century British author and Anglican priest William Ralph Inge who made the following sage observation: "Events in the past may be roughly divided into those which probably never happened and those which do not matter."

• Consider your age, then consider the following tidbit: In the 1700s, the average human lifespan was about 30 years. Sobering thought, isn't it?

• According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, the home appliances Americans consider to be the most essential are clothes washers and dryers, followed by air conditioners. Obviously, the majority of the survey's respondents weren't residents of Florida or Texas.

• Historians report that Napoleon Bonaparte, when he wasn't busy conquering, enjoyed ice skating. • If you're frightened of bugs, you might not want to know the following tidbit: There are 10 quintillion insects alive on the planet. • A study published in 2008 showed that the price of a pain medication had an effect on its efficacy. In the study people were given placebo pills, some at the regular price and some at a discounted price. Those who paid full price for the medication reported more relief than those who paid less. • Half of all cookies baked in the United States are of the chocolate-chip variety. • If you're planning to be in the San Francisco area in June, you might want to plan a stop in the nearby town of Petaluma for the Sonoma-Marin Fair. This is where the competition to determine the world's ugliest dog is held every year. In addition to earning bragging rights, the owner of the winning pooch is awarded a prize of $1,000.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My Pom/Pekingese mix, "Debbie," really scratches and bites at her fur a lot, but when I inspect her, there are no fleas that I can see -- nor even the flea "dust" you described in a previous column. I bathe her regularly, but it doesn't seem to help. My husband thinks she scratches just to spite us. Do you have a solution? -- Dottie K., Irving, N.Y.

DEAR DOTTIE: Debbie's not scratching to "spite" you; she's scratching because she itches. The cause of her itch doesn't have to be fleas. She may have allergies or dry skin.

Scratching and biting at areas that are bother-ing her can make the problem worse, not better, especially in the case of dry skin (or even a skin disease that's developing, unseen).

The first thing I would recommend is to stop bathing her so frequently, at least for a while. When you do bathe her, use a bath soap spe-cifically made for dogs, and ideally for dogs with

Fleas Aren't Only Cause of ItchingBy Sam Mazzotta

sensitive skin. The soap should be unscented -- perfumes can cause all sorts of misery for a dog with dry skin.

You also should take Debbie to the veterinarian and have her checked out not just for fleas, but any possible allergic reaction, dry skin or skin disease.

Foods can be a culprit in skin problems caused by allergies. It's sometimes hard to pinpoint ex-actly which food is causing Debbie's problem, but your vet can provide information on how to narrow down the possibilities so you can adjust her diet accordingly.

taking Coumadin. It's a bothersome drug, requiring frequent blood tests to be sure that enough drug is taken but not too much. Too much poses the danger of bleeding.

Talk with your doctor about having a consultation for abla-tion. The doctor might side with you, or tell you that you're not a candidate for the procedure. At least you'll have the satisfaction of having tried.

The booklet on heartbeat abnormalities, including atrial fibrillation, discusses them, their significance and their treat-ment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I think my husband is an alcoholic. He drinks far too

much. He's not abusive, but his consumption of alcohol is more than a six-pack of beer a day, and sometimes whiskey. He usually falls asleep in a chair. My sister tells me the cage test can diagnose alcoholism. What is it, and where can he get it done? He won't talk about these things to me. -- C.L.

ANSWER: It's not a lab test. It's four questions. They are: 1. Have you ever felt the need to cut down on your drinking? 2. Are you annoyed when people criticize your drinking? 3. Do you ever feel guilty about your drinking? 4. Have you ever taken a drink first thing in the morning as an eye-opener?

Two "yes" answers indicate alcoholism. It's a simple but reliable test.• • •

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past eight months, I have had a heart rhythm problem. I am on Coumadin. One day I forgot I had taken it and took another dose. My blood test showed that I had taken far too much. You wrote about ablation being a treatment for rhythm problems. Would it benefit me, and could I go off Coumadin? -- W.K.

ANSWER: I'm sure your rhythm problem is atrial fibrillation, a com-mon and serious heartbeat disturbance where the heart beats rapidly and irregularly. One consequence is a drop-off in the amount of blood pumped by the heart. The second, and the more dangerous consequence, is the formation of clots in the upper heart chambers because blood in those chambers isn't moving -- stagnant blood forms clots. Clots in the heart can be swept into the circulation and to the brain, where they block a brain artery. The result is a stroke. Coumadin prevents those clots from forming.

Many times, the goal in treating atrial fibrillation is only to slow the heart so that it pumps out an adequate blood supply.

Are there other ways of dealing with this rhythm problem? Yes. Abla-tion is one. It involves eliminating the heart tissue generating the abnor-mal rhythm. It's done by inserting a thin tube that's outfitted to deliver radio waves to the specific heart sites from which the abnormal beating arises. Does it sound simple to you? It isn't. It's very intensive work, and

requires special training. Gener-ally, ablation is restricted to those younger than you, but not always.

I'm on your side when it comes to

December 2 - 8, 2010

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Jimmie Johnson has a familiar face. He has turned the Chase for the Sprint Cup into what seems to be a perpetual case of "déjà vu all over again."

By finishing second in the final race of the season, the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami

Speedway, Johnson managed to win the championship for a record fifth year in a row. No one else has won four straight.

In fairness, the outcome came down to the final race, and Johnson began it in second place, 15 points behind the ill-fated Denny Hamlin, whose Toyota finished a disappointing 14th. Johnson won the championship by 39 points over Hamlin and 41 over Kevin Harvick, who finished third in the final race, won by the fourth-place finisher in points, Carl Edwards.

Though hardly objective, crew chief Chad Knaus knows Johnson best."If you really sat back and looked at what this guy (Johnson) can do with a

race car, you would be pretty impressed," said Knaus. "He's been in some pretty precarious situations and driven through them. He's put his nose in places that other people would not do and pulled it off.

"As a friend and as a teammate, I want to make sure that he gets what he deserves."

Johnson, from El Cajon, Calif., is uncomfortable tooting his own horn."Each year that I've been in the sport, I've become more comfortable with

my role," he said. "The way I was raised in racing, I had to earn the right to say things, and I had to earn the right to have confidence and to act a certain way.

"I've accomplished so much more than I ever thought I would."Hendrick Motorsports

earned its 10th champion-ship, equaling Petty Enter-prises, which won seven with Richard Petty and three with his father, Lee. Hen-

drick has won five titles with Johnson, four with Jeff Gor-don and one with Terry Labonte.

"I know how fortunate I am to have guys like Jimmie Johnson and Chad (Knaus)," said Hendrick. "I wouldn't want to race against them, and I've been very fortunate through my career to have guys like Jeff Gor-don and all of the great drivers that have been through our place.

"I always had hoped I could win a race, and then a championship, and survive through the sport and, you know, have sponsors and show up and be competitive. ... We are very appreciative, and I still can't believe that we have won five in a row or that we have gotten to 10."

Do you want to make some dough with the kids this weekend? Put away the eggs, the flour and the butter, because this aromatic dough requires only two ingredients in very odd proportion -- equal parts applesauce and cinnamon. Sound delicious?

You definitely won’t want to eat this concoction, but you can enjoy its delicious scent as cut-outs for tree ornaments, gift tags and even jewelry for holiday gifts. Welcome to Apple Cin-namon Dough!

Here’s what you’ll need for a small batch of dough to start:1/2 cup ground cinnamon (I bought in bulk for less than a dollar)1/2 cup commercial applesauce (homemade is too runny)

Here’s the fun:Mix together equal parts cinnamon and commercially made

applesauce. If it gets a bit sticky, add more cinnamon. If it’s too stiff, try more applesauce.

Scoop onto a piece of waxed paper, place another sheet on top and roll it out until it’s almost 1/2 inch thick. Stop and decide what “charms” for jewelry or ornament shapes you would like to create -- stars, hearts, pine trees, alphabet letters, etc. Use cookie cutters you have, or make your own templates by cutting out pieces of cardboard from a cereal box in the desired shapes. Place on top of the dough and trim away the dough around the pattern.

Use a drinking straw to poke a hole in shapes for threading later onto ribbon or string. Use a toothpick and carve details,

such as scales on a fish or a smile on a crescent moon.

When complete, place them on a cooling rack and allow them to air-dry for about 24 hours or more un-til they are nice and hard. Or, an adult may set them on a baking sheet and place

in a 200 F oven for about two hours or until hard.Time to decorate! Using acrylic craft paints in squeeze bottles,

create patterns of any kind on your shapes. Dry.Fashion a pin or brooch by gluing a clasp on the back, or make

a necklace by stringing together a few alphabet-letter shapes or smaller charms. Tie a string through the hole for ornaments. For gift decorations, make shapes of objects that are a clue to what is inside the package. For example, if you are giving Uncle Jim a windbreaker for sailing, make a sailboat shape. Tie it to the ribbon on the gift, and it will be like giving two presents in one.

Q: I inherited a bowl that has been identified as a piece of Iris glass. What exactly is Iris glass, and who manufactured it? -- June, Fort Dodge, Iowa

A: When I get a glass question, I immediately grab my copy of Glass A to Z, by David Shot-well (Krause, $24.95). According to Shotwell, Iris glass was developed in 1910 by the Fostoria Glass Company. Even though it was first made for commercial purposes during the autumn of 1910, it was not trademarked until Aug. 6, 1912.

Iris glass is usually two or three different layers of different colors created when threads of glass were pulled into feather-like designs by machine. Pads of colored glass were sometimes bonded to the surface to form designs that looked like leaves, flowers and tendrils. There was an earlier Iris glass manufactured by the Mt. Washington Glass Company during the 1870s. It is an irides-cent glass rather than layered.

stick to your budget and use saved cash, or are you afraid to look at the stack of credit-card receipts you’ve accumulated?

If you’ve reached the end of your budgeted money, yes ... you can stop shopping. Don’t buy another thing, even if you see a super sale.

If you used credit cards because you didn’t save

in advance, you’ll need a plan of attack to pay off the balance.

Your first step will be to determine whether your credit-card purchases put your balance over 50 per-cent of your available credit. Going over that 50 percent amount can impact your credit score long term. If that has happened, do everything you can to immediately bring the balance below that 50 percent. Consider taking out a lower interest loan, perhaps at a credit union, to pay off the entire bal-ance. If you’re expecting a tax refund and haven’t paid off the credit card by the time the check ar-rives, use it first to pay off the debt.

If you’ve stayed under that 50 percent amount, break the balance into three payments and pay it off quickly. If you can’t clear the balance in three payments, at least make more than the minimum payment. There’s a place on your credit report that indicates whether you make more than the mini-mum payments, and that helps your credit score.

If your credit card statement after the holidays offers you a month of no payment, send a payment anyway. The interest meter never stops running, and the cost of your gifts will continue to rise.

If you haven’t started your shopping yet, recon-sider how much you’ll spend. Decide whether it’s possible to go all-cash this year, perhaps by not sending gifts to people outside your immediate family.

Idea: Start a Christmas Club account at your bank or credit union for next year. Every month you’ll deposit a set amount, and by the next shop-ping season all of your holiday money will be wait-ing for you. The interest paid will be minimal, but you’ll have the satisfaction of having no credit-card debt after the holidays.

• E.B. in Mississippi writes: "I have a hint on how to fasten a bracelet. Put it around your wrist, lay your arm on your lap or a table, and tape one end down with clear packing tape. Hold the other loose side and fasten. It's much easier when you don't have someone to hold it."

• "If you wear glasses and are coloring your hair, wrap the earpiece in aluminum foil or plastic wrap before you start. Then you can wear your glasses safely, without worrying about the dye transferring to your glasses and coloring them." -- R.U. in Alabama

• Too many cookies? Line berry baskets with festive paper, arrange with an assortment of cookies, wrap in plastic wrap and deliver to neighbors who may appreciate a cookie or two.

• Mix up pancake batter in a squirt bottle. You can spell out letters and make ABC pancakes, or even doodle different shapes, which the kids can have fun arranging before they eat them up.

• "I keep my threaded bobbins in a clean prescription pill bottle with the label removed. I cut a small stick to fit, and I turn the bottle upside down and grab the stick to keep the bobbins in line. I can glance quickly and get the one I want, while they stay nice and straight in the bottle." -- D.L. in Utah

• To store loose plastic baggies for reuse, label a paper towel-size cardboard tube with the size of the baggie (sandwich, quart, snack, etc.) and stuff the bags in the tube. It can be stored in a drawer, and the label makes it easy to see which kind you need.

Q: I really miss “Parks and Recreation” -- it is by far my favorite comedy on TV, along with “The Office.” When will it return? I can’t take much more of “Outsourced.” -- Samuel F., via e-mail

A: You will be happy to hear, as I was, that “Parks and Rec” (as many of us lovingly refer to it) will be back on NBC on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 9:30/8:30c after “The Office,” where it belongs. I also was getting a little nervous that the mediocre comedy, “Outsourced,” was going to usurp Leslie Knope and company from their rightful spot on must-see Thursday night TV. I am not sure what this means for “Outsourced,” but I don’t really care. It is difficult for me to get behind a show that makes light of a real problem in America nowadays: high unemployment and jobs being shipped overseas. Aside from that, it just ain’t funny!

• • •Q: Last I heard, “V” was coming back to ABC

in November, but November came and went, and no “V.” Please don’t tell me that it has been can-celed. After the cancelation of “FlashForward” and “The Gates,” I don’t think I can take another early cancelation! -- Theresa R., Baltimore

A: Don’t you worry, Theresa. “V” will make its highly anticipated season premiere on Tues-day, Jan. 4, at 9/8c. Season two will feature more character and lizard revelations, more details about the V’s mythology, as well as even more action and more plot twists. As my favorite new show of the 2009 season, I can’t wait to see what develops.

• • •Q: I loved Laura Prepon on “October Road,”

and was sad when it went off the air. Can you tell me what else I can see her in? -- Danni J. in Georgia

A: Laura, 30, has been busy since “October Road” was canceled in 2008. She guest-starred on “In Plain Sight,” “Medium,” “House M.D.” and “How I Met Your Mother.” In January, Laura plays Natalie Gray, the actress who portrays Nicki Heat in the movie adaptation of Richard Castle’s best-selling mystery book “Nicki Heat” on ABC’s “Castle.”

• • •Q: I have loved all of the

“Glee” cameos as of late, es-pecially Britney Spears and Gwyneth Paltrow. Now I hear that Anne Hathaway might be on the show? Is that true? -- Denny T., via e-mail

A: While there are no imme-diate plans for Anne Hathaway to guest-star on the popular Fox musical/comedy, if Anne gets her way, you just might see her walking down the halls of McKinley High. She recently revealed: “In my head, I’ve cast myself, and I know what song I’m going to sing! I would want to play Kurt’s long-lost aunt’s mother’s sister, who is also gay and comes back to help him deal with his sexual-ity, and I would sing ‘You Are
