• On March 15, 44 B.C., Julius Caesar, the “dictatorfor life” of the Roman Empire, is murdered by hisown senators at a meeting in a hall next toPompey’s Theatre. The conspiracy against Caesarencompassed as many as 60 noblemen, including Caesar’s own protege, Marcus Brutus.

• On March 13, 1781, English astronomer WilliamHershel discovers Uranus, the seventh planet fromthe sun. Herschel’s discovery was the first to bemade by use of a telescope, which allowedHerschel to distinguish Uranus as a planet, not astar, as previous astronomers believed.

• On March 12, 1933, eight days after hisinauguration, President Franklin D. Roosevelt giveshis first national radio address, or “fireside chat,”broadcast directly from the White House.Roosevelt went on to deliver 30 more of thesebroadcasts between March 1933 and June 1944.

• On March 9, 1945, U.S. warplanes launch a newbombing offensive against Japan, dropping 2,000tons of incendiary bombs on Tokyo and ignitingthe worst single firestorm in recorded history.Almost 16 square miles were incinerated, andbetween 80,000 and 130,000 Japanese civilianswere killed.

• On March 14, 1950, the Federal Bureau ofInvestigation institutes the “Ten Most WantedFugitives” list in an effort to publicize particularlydangerous fugitives. The creation of the programarose out of a wire-service news story in 1949about the “toughest guys” the FBI wanted tocapture.

• On March 10, 1969, James Earl Ray pleads guiltyto the assassination of civil-rights leader MartinLuther King Jr. and is sentenced to 99 years inprison. During the 1990s, King’s widow andchildren spoke publicly in support of Ray andspeculated about an assassination conspiracyinvolving the U.S. government and military.

• On March 11, 1997, Paul McCartney, a formermember of The Beatles, is knighted by QueenElizabeth II for his “services to music.” The 54-year-old lad from Liverpool became Sir Paul in acenturies-old ceremony of pomp and solemnityat Buckingham Palace in central London.

• It was politician, liberal commentator andformer comedian Al Franken who gave thefollowing sage advice: “When you encounterseemingly good advice that contradicts otherseemingly good advice, ignore them both.”

• Statistics show that for every 71,000 skydivingjumps made, there is only one fatality. That mightnot seem surprising until you put it in context: Youhave a one in 20,000 chance of dying from aregular fall right here on solid ground.

• If someone were to ask you to name thesunniest spot on Earth, you might be tempted toanswer “the Sahara Desert” or some other suchexotic place. You would be wrong, though; thatdistinction belongs to a town right here inAmerica. Out of the possible 4,456 daylight hourseach year, the sun shines for an average of 4,050in Yuma, Ariz. That means that there’s cloudcover or rain for only about 10 percent of thetime there.

• Floridians like myself are, unfortunately, familiarwith large cockroaches, sometimes calledpalmetto bugs down South. While the bugs mayinspire disgust, however, we should be glad we

don’t have to deal with their Paleozoic-eraancestors. Those who study such things say thatcockroaches back then were the size of today’shouse cats.

• During the 19th century, first lady Lucy Hayes, wife of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president ofthe United States, was widely known as“Lemonade Lucy.” It seems she was an ardentsupporter of temperance and therefore didn’tallow alcohol to be served in the White Houseduring her husband’s four years in office.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Quiet guys oftenfind themselves being stereotyped. Just because aguy is quiet, it doesn’t mean that he’s also charac-terized by a whole string of other adjectives. Itdoesn’t make him bland, boring, timid, peaceful, unemotional and unassuming.

Take that back. Matt Kenseth is unassuming.Perhaps as a result of being unassuming, manyfans don’t assume Kenseth to be as good as he is.Jack Roush has no such problem. Roush blamedhimself for Kenseth’s woes in 2008, when he failedto win a race and finished 11th in the Sprint Cupstandings. The alternative would have been toblame Kenseth.

Kenseth got a new crew chief. The very firstnotable result was a Daytona 500 victory, his first. It was also Roush’s first. It was Ford’s first in nineyears.

It was a big deal for a quiet man.In the post-race press conference, Kenseth had

to defend himself against the charge that he wasunemotional. “I actually am a pretty emotionalguy,” he said. “You guys just don’t always reallysee it.”

Kenseth was unassuming about it, though. The first 36-year-old from Cambridge, Wis.,

ever to win the Daytona 500 went on the offen-sive a bit later when Ken Willis, the humorist whoalso writes sports for the Daytona Beach News-

Journal, asked a question. Willis’s questions are often as whimsical as his col-umns.

“Matt, wild celebration tonight in the RV lot?”Kenseth had been waiting a while for this one.“Oh, man, I’m going to go paint it plaid, just like you said,” he answered,

matching Willis whimsy for whimsy. “Going to New York tomorrow night andpaint the town plaid. Wasn’t that your quote?”

Willis: “You got a long memory.”Kenseth: “Like an

elephant.”A good time was had

by all.

Kenseth famouslydreads the annualawards ceremonies heldby NASCAR atseason’s end in the BigApple. A cabin in theWisconsin woods ismore his preferred“away from the track”pastime.

“It’s not always myfavorite thing to do,” hesaid, referring to NewYork. “But I’m reallylooking forward to go-ing around and, actu-ally, people calling methe Daytona 500 champion. It’s pretty awesome. I’m going to enjoy it the best Ican and try to find some time to celebrate when we have time in our schedule forit.”

Meanwhile, they were dancing in the streets of Cambridge, where plaid spraypaint is a bear to mix.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have gout in my big toe,and it’s very, very painful. I have to walk in my socks. Are there any pills for gout? What food causes thepain? — L.K.

ANSWER: Gout results from too much uric acid inthe blood. Uric acid is a byproduct of daily cellchemistry. When the uric-acid level rises, crystals ofit penetrate the joint. The joint swells, the skin over itturns red, and the joint feels warm. It hurts beyondwords. Early on, gout comes in attacks, with theintervals between attacks being free of pain. Astime passes, the joint can hurt all the time. The jointat the base of the big toe is often the first jointaffected, but it might not be the only joint. The heel, ankle, knee, fingers, wrists and elbows also can betargets.

the affected joint andfinding a high blood uricacid. The most tellingevidence lies in looking atjoint fluid through amicroscope and seeinguric-acid crystals.

Are you positive it is goutthat you have? Manyconditions cause swollen, painful joints.

For acute gout attacks, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines like Indocin work well.Another time-honored gout medicine is colchicine. If neither of these works, cortisone drugs come tothe rescue.

Zyloprim (allopurinol) turns off the production ofuric acid and prevents gout attacks. Benemid(probenecid) facilitates the excretion of uric acidinto the urine. It, too, prevents attacks.

Diet was the sole treatment of gout in the badold days. Organ meats — liver, brain, sweetbreadsand kidneys — are foods to avoid. Gravies are notgood for those with gout. Beer should be restricted.Bing cherries can bring the blood level of uric aciddown.

The gout pamphlet deals with this topic in greaterdetail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr.Donohue, No. 302W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name andaddress. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have wax buildup in my

ear. The doctor told me that. He didn’t tell me whatto do for it. Will you? — A.C.

ANSWER: Warm some baby oil or mineral oil. Putone or two drops in one ear and let it remain therefor 10 minutes. This will soften the wax. Next, using arubber-bulb syringe found in drugstores, gently flushthe ear with warm water. Tilt the head to drain the

water out of the ear, and the wax should comeout with it. If it doesn’t, repeat the procedure.

Don’t do this procedure if you have a hole in youreardrum or an infection of the ear canal.

If this procedure is too much to handle, have thedoctor do it.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a cousin who needshelp finding a good home for her three dogs. Her houseis being foreclosed on, and she is struggling to find aplace to live on a limited income. She has no car, hertelephone will only call locally and her computer is onthe blink. We contacted the no-kill shelters in our area, but none of them has ever responded. Where else can wefind help? — Desperate in Desert Hot Springs, Calif.

DEAR DESPERATE: The foreclosure crisis has cre-ated another crisis in its wake: pets being abandoned byowners who are no longer able to care for them due tofinancial difficulties, because pets are not allowed in theresidences they must rent or other factors.

Shelters are near or at capacity in the best of times, and these times are certainly not the best. However, youshould continue to try and contact local no-kill shelters.

Foreclosures Take Toll on Owners and PetsBy Sam Mazzotta

If you can call beyond the local area, become yourcousin’s advocate and call shelters for her daily untilsomeone responds.

Another avenue is to advertise in the local circularthat the dogs are available. However, do not say that thedogs are free to a good home. There are reasons for this, which unfortunately I don’t have room to list in today’scolumn. Instead, ask for an amount that will cover vet-erinary and transportation costs for each dog. Insist uponmeeting the potential owners. More information on giv-ing up a pet can be found at: http://www.northbay-canine.org/lastresort2-txt.htm.

Because these solutions are iffy at best, your cousinmust try and keep the dogs if at all possible. Canyou or a family member take in one or more of thedogs? Can you help your cousin find affordable

housing that also takes pets?Helping a family member through this sort of crisis

isn’t easy, and you’re a champ for stepping up. Don’tgive up on finding either a good home for the dogs or aplace where your cousin can keep them.
