The new Santa Barbara Airport terminal hadn’t evenedopened its doors to the public yet when requests for naming thenew terminal came in.

Airport Director Karen Ramsdell said the question of nam-ing a building after a person isn’t that simple. They have tohave some sort of local significance, have to have made endur-ing contributions to the community, and have to have an honor-able legacy.

“It can’t just be, ‘I think my neighbor is a swell guy and itshould be named after him,’” Ramsdell said.

Ramsdell also noted that the issue concerned the naming ofthe terminal building itself and not the airport as a whole.

But there’s no questioning that the two names already putforward meet the city guidelines.

Santa Barbara County Bar Association president MackStaton believed superior court judge and former mayor JohnRickard. Rickard, who served as mayor from 1953-1957, hadbeen instrumental in coming up with a way for the city to annexthe airport property.

“Without his vision and creativity, Santa Barbara would sim-ply not have the airport we have today,” Staton wrote in hisrequest.

But Edward Hartfeld argues that Dwight Murphy is equallydeserving. Hartfeld said Murphy had been a driving forcebehind the airport selection committee in 1927, and had chairedthe City Master Planning Committee after the 1925 earthquake,

which resulted in Santa Barbara’s signature Spanish architec-ture theme.

“I can think of nothing more dramatically suited to empha-sizing that metaphor for newly arriving air passengers to outvery special city, special in great measure because DwightMurphy above all other citizens made it so,” Hartfeld wrote.

But the council has a third option: do nothing. And the coun-cil has a number of reasons to put off the issue. On a practicallevel, Ramsdell said there’s no change in the airport’s functioneither way.

While other municipalities have named their airports andtheir terminals, Ramsdell points out that most people still call itthe Burbank airport, not Bob Hope, or even Santa Barbara’s oldterminal, named after Earle Ovington, America’s first airmailpilot who called Santa Barbara home.

She said location and use is a bigger factor in how peoplerefer to structures.

“That’s the case with a lot of buildings,” Ramsdell said.The old terminal is expected to retain that name whatever

else the council decides.In terms of procedure, a rename has already been advised

against.In a February meeting, the airport commission unanimously

recommended that there was no pressing need to name the ter-minal. While the commissioners had been impressed with therésumés of Murphy and Rickard, none of them could see apressing need to name the terminal at all.

It turns out that Newt Gingrich will not take"no" for an answer.

A day after finishing second in Republicanpresidential primaries in Alabama andMississippi that he had cast as must-wins for hisflailing campaign, Gingrich pressed forward onWednesday, even as calls for him to drop outpersisted.

But as Gingrich campaigned in Illinois -which on Tuesday will host the next big contestin the state-by-state fight for the Republicannomination - it was clear that many Republicansnow see the race as a two-man battle betweenMitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

Republican leaders and activists speculatedopenly about the impact of a Gingrich withdraw-al, and whether conservatives who support theformer U.S. House speaker would flock toSantorum and make him competitive withRomney, the Republican front-runner.

"Rick Santorum really needs Newt Gingrichto get out of the race," said unaffiliatedRepublican strategist Ford O'Connell. "Gingrichmay only be taking 10 to 15 percent of the voteas the race goes on, but the majority of thatwould otherwise be going to Santorum and thatmakes a huge difference.

"Romney is, without a doubt, the beneficiarythe longer Gingrich stays in the race. ... This raceis going to keep going and going."

The battle to determine who will faceDemocratic President Barack Obama in theNovember 6 election is a hunt for votes, butmore importantly it is a hunt for party delegates,whose support is awarded based on how candi-dates fare in primaries and caucuses. A candidateneeds 1,144 party delegates to clinch the nomi-nation.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governorwho has superior funding and organization, has484 delegates, according to CNN's estimate.Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, has239, while Gingrich has 136 and TexasCongressman Ron Paul, 69.

And so, the theory goes, if Gingrich were todrop out and endorse Santorum - and if nearly allof Gingrich's delegates sided with Santorum in a

unification of anti-Romney forces - Santorumwould be within striking distance of the front-runner in the delegate count.

It's unclear, however, whether a huge majori-ty of Gingrich's delegates would side withSantorum if Gingrich were to leave the race.

In exit polls in Alabama, Mississippi and sev-eral other states that have held contests this pri-mary season, solid majorities of Republican vot-ers have said that defeating Obama this fall istheir top priority, and that they see Romney asthe Republican with the best chance of doingthat.

The "electability" question could drive somedelegates currently committed to Gingrich tosupport Romney, several political analysts said.

Under Republican Party rules, "when a candi-date drops out, their delegates are free to supportanyone," said Kirsten Kukowski, a spokes-woman for the Republican National Committee.

Kukowski said the delegates of a candidatewho leaves the race are not bound by anyendorsement of the departing candidate.ROMNEY INVESTS IN ILLINOIS

With contests in Missouri (Saturday), PuertoRico (Sunday) and Illinois (Tuesday) comingup, Romney made a pit stop at a luxury hotel inNew York for the type of fuel that drives a cam-paign: cash.

At a fund-raiser at the Waldorf Astoria wheredonors paid $1,000 and up for lunch, Romneymet with supporters such as Woody Johnson,owner of the New York Jets football team.

In a signal that it will spend big to try to winin Illinois, Romney's campaign directed nearly$1 million toward advertising in that state, whererecent polls indicated he is clinging to a narrowlead over Santorum.

Restore Our Future, the independent "SuperPAC" that supports Romney, has spent about$3.7 million to air anti-Santorum ads in Illinois,mostly in Chicago, according to a Republicanmedia buyer who tracks advertising.

In Puerto Rico, Santorum showed a new sideto his conservative platform, which has includedcalls for more religion in government andgreater restrictions on abortion.

The strength of Tyler Perry’s filmslies not only in the moral messages theyenfold but also in their ability to tell theblack experience in America. ShowingAfrican-Americans who have reachedthe highest levels of society, the hero ofthis film is a multiple generation IvyLeague graduate. The impact this hason American culture cannot be underes-timated.

However, in this latest film there aretwo weaknesses we would note. Thefirst is the absence of Christian faiththat is usually present in Perry’s filmsdue to the centrality of the church inblack culture. The second is the lack ofdepth in the development of the characters. As director,writer and lead actor, Tyler Perry has increasingly presentedfilms in which the characters are one-dimensional and themoral message is simplistic and obvious. Perhaps the filmswould be enriched by including more creative collaborationin writing these tales.

Appropriately named after John Wesley, the Christian the-ologian who focused on practicing deeds of love, WesleyDeeds (Tyler Perry) is the first-born son of a successful soft-ware company that was started by his father. We pick up thestory when Wesley has suppressed his own dreams to be theresponsible CEO of his father’s company following hisdeath. Though admirable, this decision has stolen the joyfrom his life and turned him into a predictable automaton ofa person. Even his beautiful fiancée Natalie (GabrielleUnion) cannot bring him happiness as she is his mother’schoice for his life partner rather than his own.

Balancing Wesley’s hyper-responsibility is the hostility ofhis younger brother Walter (Brian White). Dreaming of tak-ing over his father’s business, he is angry at being rejectedas successor by his father. This pain is accentuated by theway his mother Wilhelmina (Phylicia Rashad) denigrateshim. Trying to protect his brother from their parents’ rejec-

tion, Wesley accepts not only Walter’sirresponsibility but also overlooks hissabotage of his leadership of the compa-ny.

Into this predictable tale comes abeautiful single mother who is down onher luck. As the widow of an Iraqi sol-dier, Lindsey Wakefield (ThandieNewton) has become homeless. A custo-dian for Wesley’s company, Lindsey andher daughter Ariel (Jordenn Thompson)soon introduce a missing ingredient intoWesley’s life as he attempts to help themin their plight. These good deeds openhis heart to both life and love.

The central message of the tale is thateach of us needs to follow our dreams as we open our heartsto others. That message is true, but it is far more difficult toopen our hearts without faith and the support of our religiouscommunity than this film suggests.

California's insurance regulator ordered 10 of the largest forced-place insurers in the state to reduce their rates on their policies onWednesday, saying the rates charged were excessive.

California's clamp-down follows moves made by other regula-tors to rein in forced-place insurance - controversial policies that arepurchased by the bank or mortgage servicer on the homeowners'behalf.

For many homeowners who are required to buy insurance as acondition of getting or keeping a mortgage, there is no choice ofinsurer, terms or price.

An examination of the insurers' financial statements showed lowloss ratios, indicating the rates may be far too high, California'sDepartment of Insurance said in a statement.

Last week, Fannie Mae, the biggest source of money for U.S.home loans, said it would seek to oversee such policies to see if theyovercharged customers.

The Marine Corps said on Wednesday it would cut four infantrybattalions and 12 flying squadrons over the next five years as itshrinks by 20,000 personnel to meet budget constraints and peace-time needs after more than a decade of war.

The biggest cuts would fall on Marine Corps bases in NorthCarolina, with Camp Lejeune and the adjacent New River air baselosing 5,800 personnel and Cherry Point air base losing another2,100. Three California Marine bases - Camp Pendleton, 29 Palmsand Miramar - would lose a total of 6,000 personnel.

Lieutenant General Richard Mills, head of the CombatDevelopment Command, said the reductions would take place overfive years "on a slope as opposed to a cliff" and would take placethrough "natural attrition," giving Marines a chance to serve out theterms of their contracts.

President Barack Obama appears in an upcoming CartoonNetwork documentary aimed at encouraging bullied children andothers to speak up, and says that as the father of two young girls heis deeply concerned about the issue.

In an introduction to the 30-minute film, the president appeals tostudents, parents and teachers to take a stand on bullying.

"It's wrong, it's disruptive and we can all prevent it," said Obama,who hosted the first White House conference on bullying last year.

He said that he was speaking not only as the president but as afather. "We've all got more work to do. Everyone has to take actionagainst bullying."

Bullying has been on the rise nationwide, according to govern-ment statistics. A 2009 U.S. Department of Education study foundmore than a quarter of students ages 12 to 18 said they had been avictim - often with others around.

The Husband and I went out theother night. We sat at the bar at oneof our favorite restaurants and thebartender, who we’ve met beforeasked us where our little one was.We told him Fia was at my moth-er’s house and he went on to tell ushis in-laws had just moved to town.In the next breath he mentioned themove was spurred on by the factthat his wife was pregnant and duein July. This is their first.

You could visibly see the excite-ment in his eyes that only first timeparents-to-be have.

He and his wife were busy reading all thebooks and all I could think was, you haveabsolutely no idea how your life is going tochange.

There is nothing in a book or anythingthat someone can say that can really prepareyou for having your life turned completelyupside down and turned into something younever thought possible.

But then, the bartender then asked us forwords of wisdom.

Here’s a little of what I told him I’velearned over the last six years.

All the people that tell you to sleep nowbecause you won’t be sleeping later are onlyhalf right. They are right, you won’t besleeping nearly as much later, but sadly youcan’t bank sleep. It’s okay to sleep morenow, but it’s not like you can cash in thosehours later.

It’s 100 percent true, time does go byquickly. There are days which may seem tolast a long time, but when you add it all up,before you know it, months and years havewhizzed by.

Take pictures and write down importantmilestones. Just do this… you’ll thank melater.

When your child is whining because shewants to be picked up and you think youneed to make dinner or fold the laundry, for-

get the chores and pick up yourchild. I regret I didn’t do thismore. Fia is now almost too bigfor me to pick up and certainly tooheavy for me to hold longer than afew minutes at a time. I willnever get those opportunitiesagain to hold my child as a baby.

Children join your family andnot the other way around. TheHusband and I made this a con-scious decision. We like to goout, she goes out with us. Wetravel, she travels. We got to

sporting events, she goes with us. We’vereally tried to keep up with the things weliked to do before we had a child and now,we have a daughter who has folded quitenicely into our lifestyle.

On the flipside to that, take time to nur-ture the primary relationship with yourspouse. Find a babysitter you trust, forkout the bucks and take some time for thetwo of you.

At bedtime, let them figure out how tofall asleep without you. Yes, I know, it hurtsto hear your child cry… 5 minutes, 10 min-utes, 20 minutes or however long it is. Itmight take crying longer than you think canstand for more days than you think ishumanly possible, but everyone will getthrough it, I promise. As long as they aresafe, it’s ok to let them cry it out. In thelong run, the payoff will be worth it.

And for me, the biggest lesson I’velearned and have steadfastly stuck by ispretty plain and simple. Listen to yourinstincts. You will know your child betterthan anyone, so follow what you know isright for your child and your family. Books,lists like this and the endless advice you’llget from friends and strangers is all fine andgood, but bottom line is you will know best.

“They’re both very interesting people thathad a lot to do with the city,” Clark said at themeeting. “But a ‘necessity’? I’m not sureabout that.”

The council could still opt to take up a nameor set up a process to select a name. SantaBarbara City Council member Bendy Whitesaid there’d been an outpouring of support forboth Murphy and Rickard, and he’s learned agreat about Santa Barbara history that he had-n’t known before.

“They’re both wonderful choices,” Whitesaid. “They seem like two great leaders ofSanta Barbara.”

But while naming the terminal might be, “aneat opportunity to tip our hats to our fore-bears,” White also said the city has other prior-ities and he isn’t committed to any particularaction yet.

“I’m just keeping an open mind on it,”White said.

Former airport commissioner and now plan-ning commissioner Addison Thompson does-n’t think naming the airport terminal should bea top priority. Personally, Thompson believesthat the decision to name the terminal shouldbe left to the people of Santa Barbara.

“If we’re going to name the terminal itshould come from the general public, not theairport commission or the city council,”Thompson said.

Underscoring the instabilityin Afghanistan, an Afghan manin a stolen pickup truck spedonto the tarmac as a plane car-rying U.S. Defense SecretaryLeon Panetta was about to landon Wednesday, an extraordi-nary security breach in a south-ern province next to whereSunday's massacre took place.

No one on board the mili-tary plane carrying Panetta washurt when it landed at a Britishbase in Helmand province.Defence officials played downthe incident, saying thePentagon chief was never indanger.

The pickup truck crashedinto a ditch after it sped acrossthe runway ramp and the driv-er, whose motives wereunclear, emerged from the

vehicle in flames.He was being treated for

burns, a Pentagon spokesmansaid, and a member of theNATO-led coalition was alsohurt when the vehicle wasstolen.
