NEWSLETTER 9 March 2018 Term 1 Week 6 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dear Parents I would like to invite the parent community to a little gathering which I am calling a “Cocktail evening with the principal”. The reason is twofold. Firstly, it will be a great opportunity to meet and gather socially with all of the new Year 7 parents who have now joined our community. Secondly, it is also an excellent opportunity for me to meet all parents informally over some nice food and a few drinks. I will be inviting staff along for the evening and hope that as many parents as possible will be able to join us. This evening is for adults only and, for catering purposes, your RSVP is essential as soon as possible. Our booking system (trybooking) will list this as a free event however there will be a $15.00 contribution fee per person to cover food and drinks. Details are as follows: Date: Friday 11 May 2018 Time: 5.00 – 7.00pm Location: School Cost: $15.00 per person paid on the night RSVP: https://www.trybooking.com/UPZF I mentioned in the last newsletter that I have set two challenges for all students during Lent. The first is to assist at home somehow and the second is to help or support someone in the local community. I have been asking students how they are going with this and for most it has been a positive answer. I would encourage parents to help their sons achieve their challenges over the next few weeks. A very important part of learning in every school is the professional learning of staff. The College learning committee has designed a highly effective program for all staff at De La Salle Caringbah to further develop their learning and teaching skills. This program will ensure that staff are part of the latest and most contemporary pedagogy that will ensure authentic learning outcomes for students and best practice in the classroom. I trust that Mondays staff professional learning day has been of great benefit. Prayer God of Mercy, I feel my heart overflowing with your tenderness. I sense your loving touch deep within my soul. I ask for your help in my weakness that I might be faithful to your word and I am so grateful that your mercy for my failings is as strong as your unbounded love for me. Amen

Last week Year 7 attended their camp at Webbs Creek During my visit on Thursday I was very impressed by the maturity displayed by our young men and by their obvious enjoyment of the camp experience It is at times like this that 12 and 13 year old boys often meet their lifelong friends Thank you very much to Mr Manahan the Year 7 team and all staff that gave up their time to attend this three day camp

I would also like to thank parents for their ongoing support regarding student uniform and appearance I have reminded students about looking doing and being their best at all times Having their shirts tucked in always is important so too is their hair being neat tidy and compliant I firmly believe that the little things matter and to see the vast majority of our students looking outstanding is a credit to their parents God bless Mr Peter Buxton Principal

Attendance Dear Parents Regular attendance at school for every student is essential if students are to achieve their potential and increase their career and life options Schools in partnerships with parents are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students While parents are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their children school staff as part of their duty of care record and monitor part and whole day absences Schools in providing a caring teaching and learning environment which addresses the learning and support needs of students including those with additional learning and support needs or complex health conditions foster students sense of wellbeing and belonging to the school community There will be times when parents wish to take their sons out of school for a variety of reasons These reasons are

Early Departure If a parent needs to take a child early from class they are required to go to the school office first where the office staff will enter a departure time and reason on the school attendance system The student is not allowed to leave the school without this entry It is then recorded

as a partial absence in the class roll This is a safety measure to protect the students Sometimes a parent may wish for another person to collect their child If so parents are to advise the school that the person is authorised to collect the child Students participating in elite Sports or elite Arts events Accredited elite sports programs include national and international sports organisations which run camps for athletes and national sports squads in which students have been selected to participate Elite Arts is defined as an opportunity for a student to participate in an event or program that is beyond the gifted and talented opportunities that Sydney Catholic Schools offers This does not include regular attendance at centres (Ballet schools Instrument tuition) If your son is involved in an elite sport or elite arts event you will need to fill out application form (A2) for exemption from attendance This needs to occur before the event If your application is approved a certificate of exemption will be issued by the school and your son will be recorded as exempt from attendance for the duration of the event Application form (A2) is available from the school Travel Family holidays and travel are no longer considered under the Exemption from School-Procedures Travel outside of vacation period is now counted as an absence Travel is considered to be domestic or international travel for the purpose of a family holiday family business bereavement or other reasons

From time to time parentscaregivers may approach the school to seek permission for their son to travel during school term for periods of time In this instance you will need to fill out application form (A1) requesting permission for your son to travel This needs to occur before the event If your application is approved a certificate of exemption will be issued by the school and your son will be recorded as on leave from the school for the duration of the event

This leave is recorded as an approved absence If the application for leave is not approved your son will be recorded as having an unexplained absence Application form (A1) is available from the school I thank you in advance for following these procedures National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence On Friday 16 March 2018 Australian schools will stand united in their communities to celebrate the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) The National Day of Action is Australiarsquos key anti-bullying event for schools and in 2018 schools are called to imagine a world free from bullying and share their BIG IDEAS Parents and Carers play an important role in taking action against bullying and violence There are some great resources for parents available on the Bullying No Way Website These can be found at the following internet address httpsbullyingnowaygovauYourRolePagesFor-Parents-and-carersaspx The National Day is a positive day of action bringing school communities together to help find workable solutions that address bullying and violence Here at De La Salle College we will be holding a short assembly to address these important issues Lets Take a Stand Together Mr Kevin Trimble Assistant Principal

During Lent we often think about ldquogiving something uprdquo for the 40 days of Lent this traditional form of abstinence encourages people to move away from their temptations During the season of Lent I like to encourage our young men to ldquodo something elserdquo where I encourage the boys instead of giving something up to do something different in their lives and perhaps help someone else or themselves In the coming weeks we as a College will be handing out a letter in RE classes seeking interest in any student wanting to complete their Sacraments of Initiation in the Catholic Church The last 2 years have seen an incredible 17 students undertake this journey to become full members of the Catholic community If families have any questions regarding this program

With many events coming up over the next few weeks and quite a few assessment tasks due I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the following items

1 If your son is sick or for an unforeseen reason is unable to attend school on a

day when an assessment task is due an IllnessMisadventure Form (available from the school office or website) needs to be completed and given back to the relevant subject teacher within 2 days of returning to school

2 If you know in advance your son will be away for a task our policy suggests that your son needs to speak to his teacher well BEFORE THE FIRST SCHEDULED DAY OF ABSENCE in order to make alternative submission arrangements

Any situation where the above rules are not followed will result in a zero mark being recorded for the task and a letter sent home stating that the student is at risk of not completing a course

Please help your son stay up to date with the assessment tasks due There are a few easy ways to make this happen

1 Subscribe to our Assessment Calendars on your mobile device and look ahead to see which tasks are due soon

2 Use our Assessment Schedule which is the document I suggest you put up on the fridge at home to check off tasks as your son moves through the semester

3 Check out the Assessment Handbook which has a brief description of each task due throughout the year (specific dates for Semester One only) which was given out to your son in Week 4

4 Electronic copies of all of this information can be found at our College Assessment website

De La Salle is very fortunate to have the QuickSmart Program for our year 8 and 9 students The program has been running for the past four years with growth and improvement with the students that participate in the program The program is designed to enhance studentsrsquo fluency in numeracy by improving their information

retrieval times the program also strengthens studentsrsquo problematic skills The program is intensive and participating students are selected from year 8 and carried over into year 9 Students are withdrawn from their classes twice a week to attend the QuickSmart lessons these lessons are held in a classroom environment with only 3 to 4 students in a class

Some key components of the QuickSmart program are

(a) Structured and time-efficient lessons which have a set sequence of activities (b) Motivating and timed practice activities aimed at speedy recall of known

facts (c) Practising and improving on what they already know and then learn and

practise new knowledge during the lesson (d) Content is explicitly linked to current classroom curriculum

The QuickSmart program is a responsive small-group intervention that aims to develop fluent (Quick) and efficient (Smart) strategy use

This year has seen a great increase and interest in the Dukersquos award and has about 40 students registered to participate in the program for 2018 As part of the programme last Friday afternoon participating students from Year 9 and 10 joined OLMC in Burraneer Park to learn about how to stay safe on their expeditions This is the first year we have joined the two programmes together and whilst we complete the Awards fairly separately the two schools will be joining together for the Silver journeys only This is hopefully to nurture a larger group into completing their Gold awards at De La Salle Cronulla On Friday with the expert tuition of Mrs King from OLMC students learnt where and how to set up the tents how to pack our packs efficiently a little about communication and first aid in the bush and how to use the small gas stoves The students all worked well together with some help also coming from the Silver students who have already completed two expeditions for their Bronze Award last year Our Bronze Expedition is 22 ndash 23 March in the Royal National Park Our Silver Expedition is 4 - 6 April in the Blue Mountains with Year 10 girls and boys We wish them fine weather and a safe journey

During Lent we often think about ldquogiving something uprdquo for the 40 days of Lent this traditional form of abstinence encourages people to move away from their temptations During the season of Lent I like to encourage our young men to ldquodo something elserdquo where I encourage the boys instead of giving something up to do something different in their lives and perhaps help someone else or themselves In the coming weeks we as a College will be handing out a letter in RE classes seeking interest in any student wanting to complete their Sacraments of Initiation in the Catholic Church The last 2 years have seen an incredible 17 students undertake this journey to become full members of the Catholic community If families have any questions regarding this program

please do not hesitate to contact me through the office

Our weekly Monday morning masses commenced last week and continue throughout the year Each year group will have the opportunity to share in this great sacrament a number of times throughout the year The next mass will be for Year 9 on the 19 March

Throughout the year but particularly during lent all students will have the opportunity to undertake the sacrament of Reconciliation with our Parish Priests at Our Lady of Fatima Parish church Below are the upcoming reconciliation times

4 Electronic copies of all of this information can be found at our College Assessment website

httpssitesgooglecomasydcatholiceduauassessment-site-dls-caringbah

I have spoken to all students who are members of our Newman Selective Gifted Education Program over the past week regarding the following 3 items

1 The Newman Symposium is scheduled for Tuesday 20 November 2018 from 500pm It is an expectation that all students who are members of a Newman class attend this event and share at least one piece of work from any KLA with the community

2 We will be holding our Newman Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 28 March 2018 from 630pm This information session is designed for Parents of current Newman classes who want more information about our Newman program and will be most useful for our Year 7 parents

However if there are parents from other year groups who would like to attend please feel free to do so Please complete the return slip on the invitation which will let us know how many parents to expect and provide us contact details for future Newman correspondence

3 A Newman Student Learning Survey was sent to your sonrsquos email last week Please encourage him to complete this form if he has not already done so

Last year we surveyed all of the students who won awards in Semester One and asked them to identify the factors that they think lead to their success Many students highlighted the benefits of both Breakfast and Homework Clubs These clubs will be running from Term 1 Week 6 until the end of the Term 2 Assessment Period (Term 2 Week 6)

Breakfast Club - Wednesday and Thursday 730 - 815am Homework Club - Tuesday and Thursday 300 - 400pm
