The mission of the team – most of whose members live in California – is three-fold: to play in high-level competition to improve their skills, to encourage other women to do likewise and to win a national championship. Jeff Meckstroth is maintaining his lead in the 2016 Player of the Year contest, awarded annually to the player who earns the most platinum points. Meckstroth came to the Orlando NABC as the 2016 leader in the contest based on his performance at the Spring NABC in Reno and Summer NABC in Washington DC. His total of 521.59 masterpoints from those two tournaments has been augmented in Orlando with his victory in the Baze Senior Knockout Teams. Pavlicek, of Fort Lauderdale FL, and Munday, of Southaven MS, put together two solid semifinal sessions to take the lead. They scored 59.43% in the first session on Wednesday and 58.98% in the second. They are 17.33 matchpoints ahead of Mark Perlmutter, San Diego CA, and Wafik Abdou, Bakersfield CA with two sessions to play. Top is 38. If I can do it, everyone should aim to.” She needed only eight points of any pigment and earned 10.65 for her team’s showing in the KO.

Claudine Jones of Gainesville GA became a new Life Master on Wednesday, earning the final masterpoints she needed in the Stratified B/C/D Swiss Teams. Her partner was Bonnie Hartwig, also of Gainesville. Her teammates were Glenda Dunham of Tate GA and Larry Rogers of Winter Park FL.

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal a

director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what is wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSDo’s and Don’ts to help

your game – Part 7By Brent Manley

    DOWork on your

concentration. To play effectively, you have to stay on top of what’s going on, whether you are declarer or a defender.

I can tell you from experience that it’s disconcerting in the extreme to realize after a trick has been played that I didn’t see all the cards. Did partner discard on that trick? What card did declarer play? Of all the mistakes I make, lapses of concentration are the most annoying.

What can be done to improve concentration?Start with finding a partner who is not inclined

to point out your errors and criticize your decisions. If you are thinking about what your partner just said and deciding whether the comments were justified, your mind won’t be on the task at hand. That could be making your contract, deciding whether to try for overtricks or figuring out how to defeat the opponents’ contract (or prevent overtricks).

Even if you find a calm, supportive partner, there are still lurking dangers. One of them is an inability to put deals you just played where they belong – in the past. If you went down in a cold contract and are mentally berating yourself for your mistake, you are not concentrating on the current deal and another bad board is likely. The same can be said for good results. If you are congratulating yourself for a clever falsecard that earned your side a top, you aren’t in the moment.

Nothing can change what happened. You must forget about boards that have been played so that you can focus on what’s happening now.

DON’TTry to make up for a disaster with a bid or play

guided by your emotions. If you play bridge long enough, you will suffer some disasters. Bridge is a game of mistakes and no one can play flawlessly all the time.

I once had a partner who could not resist trying to make up for a bad result with some off-the-wall action that usually produced another disaster.

I recall an occasion when the opponents bid and made a slam that no one in his right mind would even consider. Thanks to an incredibly lucky lie of the cards for them, the slam rolled home and we had an obvious zero.

On the next board, my furious partner made a crazy bid that resulted in minus 1100. In his attempt to make up for the slam disaster, we now had two

zeros in the row. That was difficult for me to take and, with more such actions by him, our partnership dissolved sooner rather than later.

I wrote a book with Bob Hamman that was published in 1994. In the opening chapter, Bob and Bobby Wolff were playing in the Spingold Knockout Teams and trailing by 32 IMPs at the halfway point against a formidable opponent. On the first board of the second half, Bob and Bobby doubled a beatable 4♠ contract and let it make, increasing the deficit. At that point, Bob asked the reader, “So what do we do now?” The answer: “Go on to the next board, that’s what.”

The board was history and neither player gave it another thought as they went on to win the match despite the bad result. I have never forgotten that advice. I urge you to take it to heart.

Take all your chances, No. 7

    By Eddie Kantar Dlr: East ♠ 7 5 3 Vul: E-W ♥ J 8 2 ♦ 6 5 4 ♣ A Q J 9

    ♠ J 10 9 6 ♥ A K 6 5 4 ♦ A ♣ K 10 4

East opens 1♠, vulnerable, in third seat. You try 2♥. West passes, partner raises to 3♥ and East persists with 4♦. You bid 4♥ and everyone passes. West leads the ♠Q. East encourages, but West cannot dig up another spade and shifts to the ♦2. East plays the jack and you win the ace. At trick three, you play the ♥A and East obliges with the queen. By now you should have enough information to see your way through to 10 tricks. Plan the play.

Solution It looks for the world as if you have four

losers: three spades and a heart. Yet, if you count your tricks, you could easily have 10: three hearts, the ♦A, two diamond ruffs and four clubs. By the way, if you count losers (4) and winners (10) and

the total doesn’t come to 13, you are supposed to count your cards! This deal is the exception to even that rule.

You do have a count on this deal. West is known to have one spade and four hearts. He appears to have four diamonds given the bidding and the lead, so he also has four clubs.

Play three rounds of hearts ending in dummy and ruff a diamond. Now back to dummy with a club and ruff dummy’s last diamond with your last trump. Now take three more club tricks: tricks eight, nine and ten – piece of cake. You have taken 10 tricks. They took the first trick, still have the top spades in one hand and a winning heart in the other for three more tricks! Those three tricks, however, will crash

California calling: Jan Ladd and Tomoko Stock of Valencia CA came all the way to Orlando to play in the NABC. The pair played in Wednesday afternoon’s 49er Pairs.

    on top of each other on the last two tricks. West will be forced to ruff one of his partner’s spade winners! The full deal: ♠ 7 5 3 ♥ J 8 2 ♦ 6 5 4 ♣ A Q J 9 ♠ Q ♠ A K 8 4 2 ♥ 10 9 7 3 ♥ Q ♦ K 10 9 2 ♦ Q J 8 7 3 ♣ 8 7 6 5 ♣ 3 2 ♠ J 10 9 6 ♥ A K 6 5 4 ♦ A ♣ K 10 4

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

10K Fast Pairs starts todayThe 0–10,000 Fast Pairs, which made its debut

on the Fall NABC schedule last year, starts today. The event, two qualifying sessions and two final sessions, is limited to players with less than 10,000 masterpoints and pays platinum points at 10% of the overall award up to a maximum of 10 platinum points.

Use of the bidding box — Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Stop!Using the Stop card during the auction requests

the next bidder to pause 10 seconds after a jump in the bidding. TD Matt Koltnow explains that using the Stop card is optional, and that while the procedure is included in the regulations and is not a law, employing the Stop card helps players comply with Law 73D: “It is desirable for players to maintain steady tempo and unvarying manner.”

The purpose of the Stop card is two-fold:1. It helps the opponents avoid transmitting

Unauthorized Information by acting too slowly or too quickly.

    2. It helps all four players “play bridge” by looking at the auction rather than reading meanings into fast bids and hesitations.

Players who employ the Stop card must consistently use it in all jump-bid situations, lest the inconsistency be interpreted as information. For example, a consistent Stop card user must employ it preceding 3NT in an auction such as 1NT–(Pass)–3NT, and the next bidder should still pause and look at their cards before making a call.

“Taking time, even in an easy auction, allows you to use that same 10 seconds that you’re legally entitled to after any skip bid,” says Koltnow.

Like the Alert card, the Stop card is used for the benefit of the opponents, not partner. Koltnow says that more experienced players are expected to take time after a jump in the bidding whether or not a Stop card is used.

surprise that two women would compete in an open event. “The more you look,” says Ose, “the more you see the lack of women’s pairs.”

It wasn’t long before Smoot, a retired aerospace engineer, and Ose, former real estate developer, founded Team OSMO.

Since the fall of 2014, the team has played tough events and improved along the way.

In Providence, Ose and Smoot didn’t get past the first day in the Blue Ribbon Pairs, but in Chicago the following summer they made strides, winning platinum masterpoints. In Denver last fall, Team OSMO made it to the final of the Women’s Board-a-Match Teams. At this tournament, Ose and Smoot made it to the final of the Nail Life Master Open Pairs. Last year, both of them made the Barry Crane Top 500 list.

Ose said making the Women’s BAM final in Denver without winning “wasn’t good enough, but it’s a start.”

In ACBL records, Ose is listed as living in Sacramento, but she is rarely at home, considering herself to be “peregrine,” or “tending to wander.” On Saturday, Ose and Smoot will head for an eight-day national tournament in Cuba. The two have also played in Sweden and Iceland.

“We want to promote women striving to play at high levels because that’s how you get better,” says Ose.

Smoot is a 20-year veteran of the duplicate scene. Ose has been playing for about eight years. She believes the Team OSMO campaign is having an impact. On occasions when she has a chance to tell women what Team OSMO is all about, she can sense that some are thinking, “If they can do it, so can I.”

When she is not playing bridge, Smoot is an avid astrophotographer and a downhill skier. Ose likes long-distance walking and hiking, plus spending time with “three amazing young granddaughters who will be learning to play bridge as soon as I can make it happen.”

Smoot says one of her best moments was an encounter with a woman whose only goal was to

By the skin of our teethBy Barry Rigal

    When you qualify for the second day of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs by 17 matchpoints out of 1000, every little bit helps. With three deals to go, we were on the outside looking in, but my partner, Glenn Milgrim, came through in the clutch. We were playing against Zia Mahmood and Dennis Bilde. Dlr: East ♠ Q 8 6 5 Vul: Both ♥ 8 4 ♦ A K Q 5 3 2 ♣ 2 ♠ 7 ♠ K 9 4 3 ♥ A K J 7 5 3 2 ♥ 9 6 ♦ J 8 6 4 ♦ 10 ♣ 5 ♣ K J 10 9 8 6 ♠ K 9 3 ♥ Q 10 ♦ 9 7 ♣ A Q 7 4 3 West North East South Zia Rigal Bilde Milgrim Pass 1♣ 4♥ Dbl Pass 4♠ All Pass

Zia found the best defense to 4♠: ♥A, ♥K, ♥J, Bilde pitching his ♦10 as Glenn ruffed in dummy. When Glenn led the ♠Q, it held (Bilde would have done better to cover). Glenn changed tack at that point. He finessed in clubs, ruffed a club, then played three more rounds of spades to throw Bilde in for the forced club play. The diamonds in dummy took care of the rest. That was plus 620 and 59 out of 64 matchpoints, but Glenn was subsequently kicking himself for not taking the club finesse before playing spades. Now the defense has no counter.

    On the next deal, Glenn was handed another chance by an opponent – and he took it. Dlr: South ♠ K J 7 6 Vul: None ♥ A 10 8 5 4 ♦ 8 ♣ K 10 9 ♠ A 10 8 2 ♠ 9 5 4 ♥ K 3 ♥ J 9 7 2 ♦ K Q J 2 ♦ A 10 9 6 ♣ Q 7 5 ♣ A J ♠ Q 3 ♥ Q 6 ♦ 7 5 4 3 ♣ 8 6 4 3 2

West North East South Rigal Milgrim Pass 1NT (1) 2♣ (2) 3NT All Pass

    (1) 14+ to 17(2) MajorsAs North, perhaps I should have led my singleton

diamond? I’m not that clever. I led the ♥5 and declarer, after some internal ruminations, played low from dummy. Glenn applied the rule of 11 to cover with the 6, and declarer was in trouble. The winning line is to cross to dummy in diamonds to go after spades, but declarer took an early club finesse, and now we could set up our fifth winner before he had nine tricks.

P.S. On a diamond lead, declarer must set up his second spade winner, then play three rounds of clubs via the finesse to endplay North to lead hearts.

Allen Kahn, playing with Jeff Rothstein, did even better as declarer: A world champion North led the ♥5 against 3NT, also having shown the majors in the auction. Kahn played dummy’s ♥7 and took South’s queen with the king. Kahn played back a heart at trick two and North won the ace. A club went to dummy’s jack. Kahn then played the ♦10, then a diamond to the king. He ducked a spade, North winning the jack to clear clubs.

    Now Kahn cashed his diamonds, ending in dummy. This was the ending: ♠ K 7 ♥ 10 8 ♦ — ♣ K ♠ A 10 8 ♠ 9 5 ♥ — ♥ J 9 ♦ J ♦ A ♣ Q ♣ — ♠ Q ♥ — ♦ 7 ♣ 8 6 4

On the ♦A, North pitched a spade, gambling that South had two spades left. Kahn then cashed the ♥J, pitching the ♣Q and ran the spades for 11 tricks. To defend against the triple squeeze, North must pitch anything but a spade. That costs one trick but not two.

Fantasy in a minor keyBy Barry Rigal

This deal did not occur in the Nail Life Master Open Pairs, but it very nearly did. A couple of cards have been switched to make the point. As East at unfavorable vulnerability, you hold

    ♠J 5 2 ♥K 10 ♦Q 5 3 ♣K 9 8 6 5

West North East South Pass Pass 3♦ Dbl 4♦ All Pass

    Partner’s “inspired” lead of the ♠3 (third- and fifth-best) hits the deck and you see this dummy: ♠A K Q 9 8 ♥ J 9 ♦ 7 4 2 ♣ J 7 4

I guess you are happy you didn’t bid 5♣. Declarer plays the ♠Q and you drop the 5, trying to look like a man with ♠J 5 doubleton. Declarer gives the matter consideration, then leads the ♦2 from dummy. You play suit preference in trumps, so should you play the ♦5 to try to help partner play hearts?

    When you’ve decided on that, watch what happens if you follow with the ♦5. Declarer plays the ♦J and partner wins the ace. He advances a low heart and your 10 holds the trick. You play a club to partner’s queen and he leads another club. Declarer ruffs with the ♦8 and plays a spade to dummy, then cashes dummy’s other high spade. This is the ending: ♠ 9 8 ♥ J ♦ 7 4 ♣ J ♠ — ♠ — ♥ Q 8 6 4 ♥ K ♦ — ♦ Q 3 ♣ 10 3 ♣ 9 6 5 ♠ — ♥ A 4 3 ♦ K 10 9 6 ♣ —

If diamonds had been 2-2 originally, declarer can’t lead winning spades from dummy because partner could ruff. Thanks to your play of the ♦5, however, declarer can run the ♦7 now. If you cover, he can ruff his heart in dummy with that massive ♦4. If you don’t cover, he can run spades.

slowly but surely move up in rank. After learning about Team OSMO and what it stands for, says Smoot, the woman no longer cares whether she’s a Sectional Master or Regional Master. “She just wants to get better.”

Ose says the team focuses on bridge practically around the clock, studying hand records and discussing systems and agreements. “We want to get a title through hard work and improving our partnerships, not by hiring pros.”

Ose says the team competes in international championships whenever they can, “getting to know other bridge players, learning to compete against different bidding systems, and gaining an exposure to different regulatory systems and formats of tournaments.”

The team’s goal may seem far off at this point, but with the work ethic and optimism of Rosie the Riveter, their inspiration, they are confident. Says Ose, “We’re not the best players on the planet – yet.”

On this deal from the second qualifying session of the Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs, Paul Karas of the Milwaukee WI area hit on an inspired lead to earn a top board.

    With both sides vulnerable, Karas held: ♠Q 4 ♥10 8 2 ♦K 9 2 ♣A Q J 10 3.

His partner, Gabriel Tawil, also of the Milwaukee area, passed as dealer, and Karas’s RHO bid 3♥. Karas passed and RHO bid 4♥, ending the auction.

    Karas decided to try the ♠Q on opening lead, and the dummy appeared: Dummy ♠ K 10 7 ♥ Q J ♦ A 7 6 4 3 ♣ K 4 2 Karas ♠ Q 4 ♥ 10 8 2 ♦ K 9 2 ♣ A Q J 10 3

Declared played low from dummy, partner Tawil encouraged, and declarer followed low. Karas continued with a spade to partner’s jack, which held the trick. A third round of spades saw declarer follow low again, and Karas ruffed.

“No spades, partner?” Tawil asked. It was then that Karas noticed something was

    wrong: The ♣A in his hand was actually the ♠A. Here was the real layout: ♠ K 10 7 ♥ Q J ♦ A 7 6 4 3 ♣ K 4 2 ♠ A Q 4 ♠ J 8 6 5 ♥ 10 8 2 ♥ 3 ♦ K 9 2 ♦ Q J 10 5 ♣ Q J 10 3 ♣ A 9 7 5 ♠ 9 3 2 ♥ A K 9 7 6 5 4 ♦ 8 ♣ 8 6

Karas won the ♠A perforce when he corrected his play. Even after declarer mandated that the exposed trump be played to the next trick, there was no way for declarer to avoid an additional two club losers. Down two for North-South, and plus 200 for Karas and Tawil for a cold top. No other North-South pair lost three spade tricks.

Electronic Device Policy 1.11.1 The electronic device policy at NABCs

allows players to bring electronic devices into the playing area. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off.

1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session.

1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the exception of those persons designated by the

ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be required to leave the playing area for the remainder of that session.

Orlando to host world championships in 2018Most people who travel to Orlando from other

countries country spend their time at Disney World or some other tourist attraction. Not World Bridge Federation President Gianarrigo Rona.

Rona’s visit to Orlando during the Fall NABC was for work – mostly checking out the venue for the 2018 World Bridge Series, scheduled for Sept. 22 to Oct. 6 in this city. It will be the first non-youth open world championship in the U.S. since 2010, in Philadelphia. The World Youth Open Bridge Championships took place in Atlanta in 2013. That event will be played at the 2018 tournament in Orlando.

The 2018 World Bridge Series is open to all comers with no national quotas, eliminating the need for qualifying tournaments. All events are

transnational, meaning pairs and teams do not have to be from the same country. The tournament venue will be the Marriott World Center.

Rona says District 9 will organize a regional tournament to run alongside the world championships.

Although the tournament is nearly two years off, Rona said that work has already begun to get ready for what he expects to be a major influx of players from around the world.

Among the preparations, he said, are changes in the formats of certain events, notably the Rosenblum – the open knockout teams. There will be three days of Swiss qualifying to get to the round of 32 in the knockout phase. The Open Pairs will start at the end of the Rosenblum qualifying so that pairs eliminated in the knockout can drop into the Open Pairs.

Rona also said the Mixed Pairs will be shortened to five days.
