As we move towards the half way mark of term three, I continue to be amazed and inspired by the learning taking place across all areas of the school. Students are continuing to develop and grow through precise planning, explicit teaching and individual feedback focusing on personalised learning goals. Our school is also extremely lucky to have a have talented staff leading our specialist classes also offering great learning opportunities both in and beyond the classroom. PARENT OPINION SURVEY Each year, the school conducts an opinion survey amongst a sample of the school community. This year, a sample of approximately 80 families have been randomly selected and invited to participate. Results will be used to inform and direct our future school planning and improvement.
It would be appreciated if parents who have received the survey link via email take to time to complete the survey. GROUND FORCE Ground force is getting close and will take place on Saturday 25th August. Kardinia Community Services in partnership Herne Hill Primary School, will complete a full ‘Ground force’ makeover of our school grounds. This will enhance the many designated areas in the school and will also focus on many inclusive areas for our whole school community. We already have significant support from a number of different organisations and individual supplying various goods and services. We are very much looking forward to this event and would love to see as many families as possible helping out on the day. PARENT FORUM The next Parent Forum will be held on the Tuesday 21st of August at 9.30am. We look forward to seeing you all there to discuss the recent Parent Survey data and some Student Attitude to School Data.

SWIMMING For planning purposes, Prep-4 Swimming will take place from the 26th-30th November. It has changed this year and will involve students participating in an intensive 5-day program at Waterworld in Norlane. Swimming notes will be sent home early in term 4 and we encourage all students in P-4 to participate in this program. The cost of swimming in 2018 is still being finalised; however, it will be lower than previous years. OFF-SITE EVACUATION PROCEDURE As part of the Department of Education Emergency Management Procedures, Herne Hill Primary School will have an Off-Site Evacuation Procedure on Friday 14th September. The students will be evacuating off-site to Clonard College during the school day. The children will have conversations about this in class, but it would be great if you could speak to the children at home also. DOGS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS A reminder to all families and community members that dogs are not permitted on school grounds unless they are assistance dogs. It is important that all other dogs do not come inside the fenced school boundary at pick-up or drop-off times due to individual allergies and occupational health and safety purposes. DISABLED PARKING It is important that parents and community members are not parking in the two allocated disabled parking spots at all times. These parks need to be available and accessible to those students, parents and community members who required these parking bays. Thanks for your compliance with this expectation.

ANNUAL TOUCAN FOOD APPEAL AUGUST 2018
….Think OUTSIDE THE CAN! The Geelong Food Relief Centre has been providing free food to those in need for 28 years. Working in conjunction with welfare agencies, in 2018/19 we will see 36,000 individuals referred to Geelong Food Relief Centre’s for Emergency Food Relief. Our school is one of 90 schools throughout Geelong and the surrounding region, who every year assists us in making our service possible. Each donation makes its way onto a family’s table, which could be a family living in your street.
Items listed below form some of the basic food items most families choose. We are inviting you to be part of this generous donation to provide if possible the following:
• Cereal (All Sizes) • Cake Mix • Spreads • Dry Pasta
• Canned Soups • Canned Tuna • Packet Pasta • Canned Fruit
• Noodles • Rice • Tea/Coffee •Cling Wrap / Foil •Shampoo Conditioner
Of course, all donations whether cans, boxes or packets are always gratefully appreciated. We thank you for your ongoing support and assure you all donations will
make a significant difference to someone living within our community.
DONATION BOXES ARE AT THE OFICE!
THANK YOU
Hello again to all families and students of the Herne Hill community. The weeks seem to be getting busier and busier as we have lots of events quickly approaching. At the start of the week some selected Grade 5/6 students participated in this year's Bike Ed Competition at North Geelong Secondary College. In 2017 our school took part in this same event and came home victorious - so we really wanted to defend our title this year. Each school all had two teams that were participating. We went through a range of different bike challenges ran by North Geelong Secondary students. In the end we were able to defend our title and return to school as winners yet again. The two Herne Hill teams finished in first and second place against the Bell Park North Primary teams. We all came back with individual medals and a trophy for the school. It was a really great day to participate in, and we would like to offer a huge thanks to Mr. Carracher for teaching the Bike Ed Program and encouraging us through the learning! In one of our earlier reports we spoke about Ground Force Day and the huge changes that will take place at Herne Hill. This will certainly be a really exciting and beneficial event for the school, so we would like to again remind everyone that it will be held on Saturday, 25th August and we would love to see as many volunteers as possible. We hope to see you there! We hope everyone has a really great week! School Captains Adriana and Boris
If there is any member of the Herne Hill Primary School community who would like to donate for the art room fundraiser raffle please contact Ms Ryan in the art room. This raffle will be drawn at our Art Show evening night.
As in past years, a “Preparation for Puberty” course for year 5 and year 6 students will be run in Term 3, commencing Friday, 17th August.
This year Liz Worpel, will again run the course. Year 5 children will have 4 one hour sessions and year 6 children will have 6 one hour sessions.
The aims of the “Preparation for Puberty” program in schools are:
To provide a safe forum for dialogue and communication.
To provide accurate information about human sexuality.
To provide an opportunity to question, explore & assess their own attitudes and values.
To help young people develop interpersonal skills.
To help young people exercise responsibility regarding sexual relationships and their own health and hygiene.
To reduce fear and anxiety relating to puberty and its changes.
To give strategies to cope with the changes they experience in puberty.
To give positive messages about themselves and their bodies.
The course is part of the school curriculum. If you do not wish your child to participate, please inform your child’s teacher in writing.

Raising Your Child in a Digital World – Parent Forum Parents are often telling us that managing the on-line world and children’s electronic devices is a massive chal-lenge. Geelong City Council have organised a FREE forum on this topic with Dr Kristy Goodwin. Tickets are being released this Thursday 9 August, follow this link to book your place. THIS SESSION WILL BOOK OUT VERY QUICKLY! More details below..
5/6 students explored colour, shape and line in their acrylic paintings. We learnt about abstract art and were inspired by the colours and lines of Russian painter Wassily
Kadinsky. Students made all of their colours from the 3 primary colours red, blue and yellow.
Welcome to our new guinea pigs, Mr Snuffles and his sons Cookie & Cream. If any families are interested in looking after our guinea pigs on weekends please see Mrs Baverstock.
