College Priorities for 2015 As a College community we are to be proud of our
achievements during the past few years. Our College has
excellent student learning data and continues to grow in
student population. Friday 27th February was Census
Day and we now have 282 students at the college. We
started 2013 with 216 students; this represents a 30%
increase in 2 years and is a great endorsement from the
local community.
The continued improvement in student learning and
culture is a credit to our students, parents and staff.
Great schools have a productive and trusting relationship
between school, home and the wider community. Our
children deserve the best possible education and it is our
collective responsibility to make sure we continue to
improve so that we can provide them with an
environment conducive to great learning.
As part of our continuous improvement cycle our
priority areas for this year will continue to be;
1. Improving student learning (particularly
numeracy and literacy)
2. Providing a disciplined, calm and orderly
learning environment
3. Building students sense of pride and belonging
by providing more leadership opportunities and
increasing participation in College activities.
Myrtleford Festival – College Float
Our College will again be involved in the parade at the
Myrtleford Festival this weekend. We look forward to
having as many students as possible participating. This
year the theme will be ‘1915’. We will be meeting
at 3:30pm on Saturday near the large tree in the Pre
School car park, Duke Street. The pick-up point at the
conclusion of the parade will be the grassed area at the
rear of Coles car park. All students participating must
wear full school uniform, including the College hat.
Friends of Myrtleford P12 College BBQ for new
families
A BBQ hosted by ‘The Friends of Myrtleford P-12
College’ to welcome new families to the College
community was held on Thursday evening. Thank you to
all the members of ‘The Friends of Myrtleford P12
College’, to the staff who volunteered their time and to
all the families who attended this community building
event. I have received a lot of feedback from our new
families stating that their transition into our school
community has been a very positive experience and that
everyone has made them feel welcome and supported.
Dropping off and picking up students
The car park off Prince St is a staff car park and a
parking area for visitors throughout the day. Parents are
reminded that this cannot to be used as a pick up or drop
off point because of the increased risk of injury to
students. The Parents can pick up and drop off students
safely along Mummery Rd. Please support the College
in keeping our children safe.

Teachers teaching teachers
The staff at Myrtleford P-12 College believe that learning is a life-long process. We never stop learning. We are
always looking for ways to increase our knowledge and improve the way we deliver lessons to the children in
our care.
This week I happened to walk past Miss O’Donohue’s classroom after the students had left for the day to find
her huddled over some iPads with Mrs Antonello. They were working together on how to best use the iPads to
stimulate and support learning in their classrooms.
We trust that your child is coming home with stories of
interesting, engaging lessons because I know the teachers
are working hard to try and achieve this.
Some suggested questions you can ask your child when
they get home from school:
What was one thing you learned today?
You had Maths today? How did you go?
What was the name of a book you read today? What was it about?
Did anything confuse you today? What could you do about that?
What was your favourite activity today? Why?

Preps and their buddies In the first week of school, the Prep children had help with their lunches from their Year 6
buddies. They also spent time together in the playground which helped the younger
students settle in and feel safe. The buddies have also joined the Preps in the library to read
to them.

VCE Art Excursion
In late February I travelled with the VCE students
to Melbourne for the day, to a series of exhibitions,
addressing one of the Studio Arts criteria. The day
was a visual overload, but, each student took away
many ideas and countless possibilities for their own
journals and exploration proposals. We saw the
David Shrigley, Contemporary Latin American and
Alex Prager shows at the NGV International. At
the NGV Ian Potter Gallery we really enjoyed the
irreverence and humour of the Mambo
retrospective. At ACMI we watched four
filmscapes by the Chinese contemporary artist Yang
Fudong. Some students spent time at screen worlds,
looking at the behind the scenes activities of
movies, pointing out the car from the Australian
Mad Max film series.
Because of the nature of the exhibitions we also had
a lot of time for play, in particular in the interactive
artwork called Island, a series of suspended
walkways, created from high-key colour textiles
connected using crochet techniques, leading to a
round room which audiences are invited to enter
and relax within by Ernesto Neto; life drawing of
the peeing sculpture at the David Shrigley show,
and, making masks, beards and necklaces at the
Romance was Born show. We added our own
objects to Please empty your pockets by Rafael
Lozano Hemmer, an interactive installation that
mimics the kind of X-ray machines used in airports
and other security checkpoints. We enjoyed taking a
ride on Carsten Holler’s, Mirrored Carousel which
creates a hallucinatory, destabilising effect created
by the movement and reflections on the golden
mirrored surfaces of the carousel. Our last stop was
at Craft Victoria, to look at the contemporary
Whiteware exhibition of ceramics and jewellery.

Health Corner with Adolescent Health Nurse Rosemary Bunge
Visits to Myrtleford Lodge with MYCAL and VCAL groups. This term we have commenced regular visits to Myrtleford Lodge for students to have the opportunity to get to know
some of the seniors of our community, and vice versa. So much wisdom and knowledge can be lost if we don’t get
involved with our elderly so we are working at making sure this doesn’t happen.
The year 8/9 MYCAL are interviewing some of the residents about their life stories as part of their English studies with
Mr Holden. After gathering the information they are going to make a power point presentation about the person, which
they will share with them and hopefully elsewhere.
The VCAL group have had three visits accompanied by Mick Dwyer and I. On their initial visit they were given a very
informative talk from ADON, Amanda Graham, about careers in aged care, and how Myrtleford Lodge runs. This was
followed by a tour of the facility. In the following two visits they have spent time with the residents on a Friday
afternoon, joining them in activity sessions, including billiards, quizzes, aromatherapy, tea tasting and carpet bowls.
Commencing this week a number of VCAL students will continue to visit each Friday as part of their community
development, and continue to support the residents with their activity sessions. While a single visit to a nursing home is a
valuable experience for students and will brighten the day for older adults, an ongoing visitation program is most
effective. An ongoing series of visits allows the understanding and trust to develop, which are essential for a real
connection between people of any age.
The rewards are too many to mention but include community connections, building of self-esteem for both the adolescent
and the elderly person, career information, the learning of empathy, increased respect both ways, life skills, learning for
all, and great community action to note on a resume.
Both groups of students have represented themselves, their family and the college in a very positive way. The interaction
between young and old has been very genuine and interesting to observe. I hope that some of the students will be inspired
to continue visiting even when our official school visits come to an end.
Cheers, Rosemary

Flood experts and enthusiasts
wanted! SES needs your help to
develop the Myrtleford Flood
Guide!
SES is seeking interested members of the
Myrtleford community or local organisations to
help develop and check a new flood guide being
developed for the town. A draft Myrtleford Flood
Guide is now ready for community review and
input. Anyone with an interest or experience of
floods in the Myrtleford area is encouraged to get
involved. It is very important that the guide
captures local knowledge and that the information
we have already gathered is checked before going
to print.
The draft guide is available for community
comment and/or input until Friday 27th
March 2015.
Electronic and printed copies are available from the
SES NE Regional Office by contacting:
[email protected] or 9256 9650. Printed
copies of the draft guide are also available from the
Myrtleford Library (Cnr Standish Street and
O'Donnell Avenue Myrtleford) and Alpine Shire
offices in Bright and electronic copies from the
Alpine Shire website: www.alpineshire.vic.gov.au.
This flood guide is one of over 50 flood guides
being developed for flood-prone towns in Victoria
and is funded by the Federal Government’s Natural
Disaster Resilience Scheme. The finalised guide
will include a flood map, local flood history and
advice on how to prepare, respond and stay safe
when floods happen.
During April, a flood information night will be
advertised and give residents the opportunity to ask
questions about the flood guide and the information
it contains. Representatives from SES and Alpine
Shire will be available on the night to copy your
photos, gather more “local knowledge” and answer
any questions.
