PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Tena koutou katoa Term Three is off to a great start! Our Student Leaders have chosen resilience as the theme for this term. Although not one of the four core values from our Strategic Plan (Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence), resilience is the process of adapng well in the face of adversity, trauma or significant sources of stress. In a school environment these may include family, friendships, health, financial or assessment related stressors. Having resilience means the ability to cope with change or bouncing back from difficult experiences. Our Head Students organised and ran this week’s Assembly, which started with the Sacristans giving real examples of what resilience means. Guest speaker, local award-winning photographer Rachel Callander (pictured right with Rose McLeod and Louise Goodwin) then picked up on our theme as she shared her inspiraonal personal story of finding “awesomeness” in their late baby girl Evie, who was born with a chromosomal condion. Rachel has kindly donated a copy of her beaufully produced book to our school library. Our Year 7 and 8 students concluded Assembly by demonstrang their lively Jump Jam roune. The unconfirmed wrien report from the Educaon Review Office has now arrived and we are delighted with the whole report. This will be available for the school community to read when it becomes confirmed in approximately two weeks. ERO is likely to carry out the next Craighead review in 4-5 years. Meet Stacey Lewthwaite— Te Rawhiti House Leader

Starting at Craighead as a Year 9 student in 2012 was very intimidating, coming from being the oldest in the school to nearly the youngest. I remember looking at the Year 13’s, seeing how tall and old they looked, never being able to imagine myself in their shoes, and yet the last four and a half years seem to have flown by.

Throughout my time at Craighead, I have been involved in multiple extra-curricular activities including coaching sports teams, playing Cricket, Netball, Touch and Volleyball. Craighead has also allowed me to experience cultural opportunities with Stage Challenge being something I particularly enjoyed. I was extremely grateful to receive the role of Te Rawhiti House Leader. It has been a challenging but rewarding role as it has pushed me out of my comfort zone. So far, I have truly enjoyed the experience it has given me. I am thankful for all the help my deputy, Ruby Brown has given me.

Craighead has thoroughly helped me prepare for my future endeavours, and has shaped me into the person I am today. I will be forever grateful for all the opportunities and lessons I have learnt over the last five years and I know that the future students of Craighead will have the same positive experiences.

NEW ZEALAND YOUNG FARMER OF THE YEAR GRAND FINAL AND TEENAG STOCK JUDGING

On 7 July, Emily O’Reilly and I were chosen to be banner holders and take part in the opening ceremony for the New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final as representatives for the Aoraki region. The ceremony involved a march-past up Stafford Street, finishing at the Piazza, where one of the practical challenges for the New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year took place.

The next day I participated in the National TeenAg Stock Judging competition. This included judging three sections of livestock; Dairy Cattle, Beef Cattle and Sheep (both wool and meat), followed by a verbal presentation to a judge on my selected placings for each section. I was lucky enough to win the National title for the Sheep section and was placed second overall in the TeenAg competition.

DANCE

During the holidays, Louise Goodwin (left) and Flora Hunt participated in the 2016 New Zealand School of Dance “Winter School” in Wellington. They had an amazing experience being tutored by prestigious classical ballet and contemporary tutors from all over the world. The week

concluded with Louise being one of ten girls nominated for the overall Senior 2/3 scholarship for 2017. This was particularly exciting given she was enrolled as a Senior 2 student and chosen from a group of around 80 for this nomination.

SOUTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS’

JUNIOR NETBALL

The Craighead 9A Netball team played in the annual SISS Junior Netball Tournament in the holidays. On Monday the girls had three tough games beating Taieri College, Rangi-Ruru and Cashmere High School. This put them in the top sixteen teams of the competition. Unfortunately, on Tuesday, they lost to Wakitipu High School and Christchurch Girls’ High School in the first two games, then beat St Kevins in the third game of the day, which left them playing off for ninth to twelfth place. On Wednesday morning they had a very close loss to Rangiora High School, then beat Waimea College to finish eleventh overall out of 32 teams. A huge thanks must go to 9A coach Barry Tucker for all the time and effort he puts into this team. Team members were Kristie Brown, Molly Devries, Rosa Dobbs, Angel Ellerbroek, Milly Ford, Elsie Love, Jade Reddecliffe, Lucy Tregenza, Sophie Tucker and Isabella Wilson. The Craighead Year 10A Netball team also had a successful tournament. Eight full games were played over three days and the girls fought hard to win six of them, losing only to Christchurch Girls High School and Villa Maria College. This was a great achievement placing them ninth out of 32 teams. There was some great netball to watch and all ten girls played

well. A big thank you to coach Nicky Clements, and all the parents for their support during the tournament. The team was Phoebe Trolove (captain), Nikita Clemens, Renae Cocking, Kate Harvey, Siana Jenkins, Isabelle McLeay, Faith McManus, Jaye Shaw, Amy Taggart and Meghan Templeton.
