THUNDER BAY Chapter H.O.G. ® # 9115 www.thunderbayhog.com February 2018 - From The Director Well, we are half way through this terrible thing we call winter…..time to start thinking about getting ready for the Riding Season!! For me, it means stripping down my baby and detailing every square inch of it, leaving nothing untouched. I find a really good detailing and a couple really good coats of wax makes it a breeze to keep looking good all summer! And of course the servicing and going through the bike makes sure of stress free riding through the summer!! If you are looking to accessorize, also a great time to get it all handled. This year we have an awesome calendar of rides, and it appears that a substantial amount of our membership will be heading to Milwaukee for a great time! We have planned rides and events that will cover almost everyone’s interests, but if you are looking to plan your own ride and want some company, let us know and we can put it on Social Media and try to find you some company! We would like to invite people to consider joining our Chapter's group of Officers and Executive! We currently have several positions to fill, and we really would love to hear from you, if this sounds like it might be up your alley. We are a fun group that focuses on Riding and Having FUN, and always love to hear input from New people and our members. If this is of interest to you, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I would like to say thank you to Jennifer and Terry, who have recently announced their retirement from the Executive. Their long term commitment that they have made to our group has not gone unnoticed and we will miss having them at meetings. Thank you both for all your time and efforts; we sincerely appreciate all you have Done! All the best to you Folks; remember we are on the downhill slide to summer! Cheers and stay safe…. Trent

Do you know your Harley-Davidson®?

By Paul Reubsam

This month’s questions are:

1. When did H-D® make its first V-twin?

2. Who won the 1908 Long Island Endurance Race?

3. What was different about the engine of the 1942 XA?

4. What does the H mean in FLH?

5. What is the only movie to be named after a motorcycle?

Our LNO had record attendance at the January get together, 12 ladies attended & 2 cancelled at the last

minute. Our next LNO is scheduled for Tuesday, February 13th at Kelsey’s Roadhouse, 6:30 pm.

There was a brief discussion on a group ride this summer but nothing confirmed.

The HOG chapter Christmas party was held at Ted’s on

December 15, 2017

The party was attended by 21 members. We had a

potluck dinner and what a

feast it was! We had a visit from Santa and his sexy little elf! It

was too cold to arrive on a Harley, but they surprised

us and gave out gifts to everyone.

We played games and much fun was had by all...we

even had time for a little exercise class led by Willy

and Heidi!!

Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy the

festivities and to Ted and Roberta for the wonderful

hosts that they were.

There is a stereotype of what a biker looks like and the clothing that is chosen to wear. Many outsiders have no

idea what the reasons are for the clothing choices and why certain items are the norm. This one is for those

who have no idea why we do what we do when getting dressed for a ride.

https://www.hdforums.com/how-tos/slideshows/misunderstood-biker-fashions-525041#1-perception-vs-function

1. Perception vs. Function The biker culture is a very special one. We are all part of it (assumed if you are reading this) or curiosity has

you thinking, why? The classic perception of the leather-clad, tattooed, hell-raising biker is a prevalent one,

however, the biker scene has changed much in the last twenty years. Actually, you'd be surprised, that biker

that just passed you might just be your local kindergarten teacher! Live and let live, don't look for trouble and

there won't be trouble - that is the unspoken but well-defined rule within the biker community. Still, to too

many a biker is synonymous with trouble. Is it the faded leather in 90-degree weather? The skull bandana cov-

ering up the face? Well, the "look" of a biker is rooted in both history, form, and function. To the non-riders,

this is just as perplexing as anything that does not fit the "normal" standard that they are used to.

2. The Vest The leather or fabric vest

is a must-have for most

motorcycle riders. It is

mostly associated with

affiliation to motorcycle

clubs or will be a canvas

for "I have been there"

patches. A vest is almost

as important to the rider as

the motorcycle itself and

it's also a functional piece

of clothing that dates back

to the Plains Native

Americans. Along with

thick leather chaps, Native

Americans discovered that a rider could ride much longer when he was protected from the elements. Leather

vests, along with beads and other appurtenances also afforded much-needed protection during wars. The

practice of wearing vests and chaps while riding was quickly adopted by early European settlers for the exact

same reason. Motorcycles made their debut in the United States during the early 1900's and riders quickly

realized that a leather vest protected them very well from stones and other hazards which became more so at

50mph. So, why a vest and not a full jacket? Heat, of course. Most of the road debris and wind directly affects

the chest area, which is also vital for temperature regulation. Even on the hottest of days, the cycle of sweating

and evaporation in 70mph winds can wreak havoc with core temperature and even kidney function.

3. Fringe Although today, fringe

does not serve a functional

purpose it is still popular

among bikers. Few people

understand where this

tradition comes from and

what vital function it

played at one point. There

was, of course, no sewing

machines available for

Native Americans so

leather vests and chaps

were instead tied together

to cover the body. The

fringe, which was the tails

Page 10: THUNDER BAY Chapter H.O.G. # 9115...THUNDER BAY Chapter H.O.G.® # 9115 February 2018 -From The Director Well, we are half way through this terrible thing we call winter…..time to

www.thunderbayhog.com

left after the knot was made keeping the garment together served as a way to route rainwater and perspiration

away from the wearer. Horses also wore leather garments and they too had fringes which served the same

purpose. Eventually, sewing replaced the need for fringe but the style remained. Some motorcycle riders wear

jackets or vest with fringe and motorcycles still sport this fashion as an homage to the old days.

4. Bandana You'll see them on the

road; half helmets and a

bandana wrapped around

the face making the bikers

look as though they just

robbed the stagecoach.

Sure, a full face helmet

would negate the need for

a bandana, but its rider's

choice. There is no way to

be sure who invented the

bandana but it is a safe to

assume that it was a very,

very long time ago.

Knights in Europe wore

them, Native Americans wore them, and cowboys wear it. It prevents sunburn and windburn while adding to

the bad-ass image. It is also used to regulate temperature and sometimes, in hot weather one is worn around the

neck which is constantly moistened to provide a cooling effect. One would have a hard time finding a biker

that does not have at least one.

5. Leather While we know that

Native Americans started

this trend, how did it

become black leather?

Well, for starters, when

cared for properly a leather

vest, jacket, and chaps are

water resistant, warm, and

last a very long time.

Black is just a universally

accepted color but there is

plenty of brown and gray

leather out there. Leather

will also protect the rider,

Page 11: THUNDER BAY Chapter H.O.G. # 9115...THUNDER BAY Chapter H.O.G.® # 9115 February 2018 -From The Director Well, we are half way through this terrible thing we call winter…..time to

www.thunderbayhog.com

in the event of an accident, from dreaded road-rash. Unlike cotton or other fabrics, leather holds up very well

to the elements, sweat, and odor.

6. Stereotype Normally, people try to avoid becoming part of the outlaw stereotype. Bikers, on the other hand embrace it.

While Harley-Davidson and Indian riders will leather up and proudly patch-up the vest while rocking the half

helmet, other riders embrace their own stereotypes. Sport riders embrace the high-tech composite helmets with

the high-density plastic suits for knee-draggin' maneuvers. Adventure riders have their own thing going on

with matching rally suits and dirt-bike fashion. Still, these fashions are both functional and practical. The biker

community is all about understanding and respecting not just individual cultures, sub-cultures, but the people

who ride along with us.

The call of a motorcycle road trip is as ageless as wanderlust and as loud as an unmuffled Harley. "On a cycle

the frame is gone," Robert M. Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance says in his

book. "You're in the scene, not just watching it anymore." We recommend you take Pirsig's word here: pack

up, head to one of these 25 all-American destinations, and drop in.

Plan a Ride

Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive – Wisconsin

A dictionary defines a moraine as an accumulation of earth and stones carried and finally deposited by a

glacier.

A large moraine was formed in Wisconsin during the last glacial age stretching from Green Bay toward Eagle.

The moraine is dotted with kettles caused by buried glacial ice, that fell off the receding glacier and got

entirely or partly buried in glacial sediment and subsequently melted. This process left depressions ranging

from small ponds to large lakes and enclosed valleys.

There are hills of glacial deposits, which can rise up to

90 m from the lakes. One of the largest hills is Holy

Hill, northwest of Menomonee Falls. There is a

basilica built on top of the hill that is visible from

quite a distance.

Parts of the area have been protected in the Kettle

Moraine State Forest. There are a number of recreation

and natural areas and several historic areas that you

could explore.

There are also lots of small towns along the way with

interesting restaurants. One of my favourites is the

Knucklehead Bar in Eagle, Wisconsin.

The Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive is about a 115-mile

drive that begins at Whitewater Lake southwest of

Waukesha (west of Milwaukee) and ends near Elkhart

Lake in the north. Because it crosses interstates and

passes through many towns it is easy to get onto a

section, and off when you are tired of the scenery.

Stop when you want, for a picnic, to shop or a

restaurant.

Enjoy the beauty, variety and geology of southeast

Wisconsin by driving the Kettle Moraine Scenic

Drive.

Do you know your Harley-Davidson®?

By Paul Reubsam

The answers for this issue’s trivia questions are as follows:

1. H-D® made its first V-twin in 1909.

2. Walter Davidson won the 1908 Long Island Endurance Race.

3. What made the engine of the 1942 XA different, was that the cylinders were horizontally opposed. The

Harley-Davidson® Museum has one of these motorcycles on display in Milwaukee.

4. The “H” in FLH means highway.

5. The only movie to be named after a motorcycle is “Electra Glide in Blue (1973)”
