Happy New Year! Are you ready for a New Year’s Resolution? Or, maybe something really big, like Chris Johnson puts it in his article this month - A New Year’s REVOLUTION! That’s BIG!

What are your plans for 2014? Have you set goals for yourself and your horse? Are you entering that big race? Are you just wanting to improve on last year? I hope everyone is setting an attainable goal (or two) for the upcoming year. If so, I hope you persevere and are able to reach them. I think the only unattainable goals that are those that have never been set. So reach for it!

Most of you have probably already noticed that we did not send out our annual stallion calendars this year. We have already heard from several of our readers that they were missed. We want to let you know that we are putting them back on the agenda (tentatively) for 2015.

It’s almost foaling and breeding season again, if you’re like me, that means long nights and little sleep. In the end it is all worth it when those babies stand to nurse. Send us pictures of your 2014 foals via email: [email protected] OR better yet, post them to our facebook page!

A Little “Barrel Talk”Here is a preview of what you can find in this month’s Barrel Talk - just keep flip-ping those pages and you’ll find the full article on pages 10 and 11.

My Filly Won’t Back Out of the TrailerF1NoniStephenvilleI have a filly who apperantly was never taught to back out of a trailer. She lunges, backs up, disengages the hind end and anything you could think of on the ground, but WILL not back out of a trailer! It seems like I’ve tried it all and she gets to the edge, sulls up and that’s that. I’ve worked with her all day, and the more you try to “out wait” her the more upset she be-comes. When she gets upset she will lunge forward and run you over to get to the corner of the trailer to turn around, She is a big girl too. we’ve tried stock trailers, trailers with di-viders, solid open door, single door; she just plain refuses! Someone’s going to get hurt, I need suggestions! Never had a filly this hardheaded ;(

cheryl makofkaI have had 2 that no one could get back-ing out. I send mine back to my trainer for a day so he can teach all my young ones to back out. Try draw reins, like when ground driving, and back her out from behind, this way you won’t get hurt, I would try an angle haul first so it is more like an alley

CurlyQBack her on the ground with drive lines, maybe one step back at a time and move on to doing that in the trailer. One hoof inside and back her off. Takes a lot of time and patience. I had to do this with my last horse except he was little enough to turn around and expected to each time.

lexyy12I have a mare that wouldn’t come out. For awhile I would put a bridle on her with long reins and come behind her and make her back. Now she does just fine.

ShiningSRanchI had a yearling or 2 year old (dont remem-ber how old he was) that we raised that would NOT back in the trailer. He wouldn’t even back to the back of the trailer. We fought and fought. Always just ended up turning him around so he wouldn’t get hurt at a show. I had him in the front part of a stock trailer with a divider, so he had to back at least a horse lenght. He was a smaller horse, I knew he wouldn’t hurt me and I was getting ****ed. I just got under his neck and pushed of the manger, I actu-ally lifted his front end up and just shoved

him out! Never had a problem after that!! This I know is not the most feasable way of doing it, but it worked! My husband’s ranch gelding has never backed off a trailer. He wasn’t ours, and so he never worried about it. When we moved they gave him to my husband and we have worked on it, and he just flat refuses! We only haul him in a stock trailer, so if we ever haul him in our horse trailer, we will have to haul him in the front so he has room to turn around.

ShiningSRanchI had a yearling or 2 year old (dont remem-ber how old he was) that we raised that would NOT back in the trailer. He wouldn’t even back to the back of the trailer. We fought and fought. Always just ended up turning him around so he wouldn’t get hurt at a show. I had him in the front part of a stock trailer with a divider, so he had to back at least a horse lenght. He was a smaller horse, I knew he wouldn’t hurt me and I was getting ****ed. I just got under his neck and pushed of the manger, I actu-ally lifted his front end up and just shoved him out! Never had a problem after that!! This I know is not the most feasable way of doing it, but it worked! My husband’s ranch gelding has never

backed off a trailer. He wasn’t ours, and so he never worried about it. When we moved they gave him to my husband and we have worked on it, and he just flat refuses! We only haul him in a stock trailer, so if we ever haul him in our horse trailer, we will have to haul him in the front so he has room to turn around.

GoMistyGoMy mare is 7 now and still needs to turn around to get out of the trailer. I have given up on her backing out. We tried many dif-ferent things over the years, and at times she would back out for a week of so... then she would freak out and we would be back to where we started from. I trailer every day in order to get to the public arena to ride. I have always been worried to make too big of a deal out fo it out fo fear she would decide not to get in the trailer any-more either. Good Luck! I hope yours will learn.

JRCdo it in baby steps. Ask her to load, when she gets to the trailer door ask her to back up and then ask her to load and when she get one foot on im-mediately ask her to back up, then ask her to load and when she gets both fronts up ask her to back up and step off. Continue this until she relaxes and responds with little force. then ask her to get her back end in and do the same thing. The hardest part for them is trusting you enough to step the hind legs off blindly. I always put my hand on the rear when the next step is going to be off the trailer. It gives them a little pre-warning.

LoveToRunOur filly was doing the same thing. She would get to the edge and then try and run me over and go all the way back in. This is what we did, not sure if it will work for you or not but worth a try. We tied a Walmart bag on the end of a english crop. Everytime she tried to run me over I would shake that at her. Only took a few times and she finally backed out. Now she backs out on her own.

teebluesageI have a two horse trailer, so all my horses have to back out. This is what I do with ev-ery horse I get. I keep everything relaxed, low pressure, no rush, then I ask for them to only take one step with their front foot in the trailer. Wait a moment, then back them out. Next ask for both front feet to step up in trailer, don’t let them completely load all the way. Wait a bit, then ask to back out again. Repeat this process several times. When the horse is good with this, then ask

for them to step in with both fronts and one back leg. And yes, it’s hard to stop them from completely coming all the way in the trailer, but it’s important not to let them, so ask for everything real slow. Now, again wait a moment and back out. When they are calm about backing out and you’ve re-peated this process over and over, then al-low them to load all the way in the trailer and then back out slowly. If they get tired of practicing and get stubborn about loading, you can reward them for doing what you ask with a bite of feed or treat of some sort, I use alfalfa cubes. Sometimes, a little brib-ery keeps them interested. Sounds like your biggest problem will be keeping your horse from pushing into you. Practice ground-work geared towards establishing personal space. These things should help.

nuevocowgirlNot sure how old she is, but a friend of mine had one that wouldn’t back out and she put a snaffle bridle on her and she was fine. Weird, but it worked!

Hollywood’s FanSometimes, especially with young horses, that step down out of the trailer scares them to death. Trying to teach them in the trailer is a mistake, someone is going to get hurt. What you need to do is create a situation on the ground that simulates backing out of the trailer. Get some long driving lines and first teach your horse to drive forward. Then, back them up with the long lines. When she is backing on a flat surface, find some small inclines, a ditch, whatever and back her up that with the long lines, then turn her around and make her back down that incline. If you can build a step down out of wood or something and back her down that, that would be good too. Once she is backing good on the ground, go back to the trailer. Load her up with a bit in her mouth (something that will get her to bend at the pole) and the long lines attached. First ask her to back out of the trailer normally. If she refuses, go outside and back her out us-ing the long lines, just make sure you are back and out of the way as she may fall on her rear the first time. You have to be consistent with this and make her back out. Bump the lines back and forth, do not pull on them both at once. Be gentle but firm with your cues. Once she comes out, load her up and do it again, each time asking for her to back out before you go to the long lines. It usually takes two or three times, but the horse will get it if prepared correctly on the ground prior to the trailer work. If have fixed a few this way.

CJEI might would get one of the Clinton Ander-son halters also....helps apply to pressure points as well helps get them back off you if they try to lunge............agree with the baby steps loading.....as in loading half way then asking to get off....

Nothing else would work but that did.... probably not the safest thing but once I PUSHED him out once, he had it... never again had a problem with it.

critterkeeperFirst I’d make sure she backs well away from the trailer. Then if she loads up fine I’d get her to the trailer make her back away from it. Lead her up to the back doors and back her up without loading her. Once she masters that without getting upset I’d let her put her front feet in the trailer then back her out do that until she is comfortable with it. Then progress to all 4 feet in and back out. A lot of times people are so worried about getting them in the trailer they forget to teach them to come out! I hate a horse that comes shooting out like a rocket.

ride n slideHad 3 different 2 yr olds in the last year that hadn’t ever backed out. I put a chain across their nose and the pressure of it was enough to get them to back off. I took it slow and easy and didn’t rush them. The last step I had to literally push them on their chest while applying enough pressure to the chain lead rope to get them to back off. Sometimes it gets ugly, but once they do it one time they figure it out.

johjrI had one that loved butt scratches, I would scratch his butt and stop and back up and he would look behind and back up to my hands to get more butt scratching. He learned to get out that way. My new colt that we bought in Sept had no idea how to back out.

BARREL TALKHe is broke to pieces, but putting a bridle on him and trying to back him out didn’t work. I think it’s making the little ‘angle’ out of the slant load that confuses him. We’ve basically had to get up under his neck like someone else posted and shove him out. He’s getting the idea now and it’s much easier.*Adding that when we shove him out it’s never with anger or even rushed. We just talk to him, telling him to back up and calmly get up under him, put my back up against him and push.

I have seen them lunge forward, and depending on the horse, they may not care if you are in the way and have no where to go.The trailer can be a dangerous place if you have one that has a problem loading or un-loading. I cannot stress enough that you need to do your prep work on the ground before taking them to the trailer.

wild_westDidn’t read all the replies, if this has been said ignore it lol. Set something up outside, that is a step down, find a hill dig a little shelf in it and back her off of it a thousand times. Use a rope halter and bump her nose until you can wiggle the lead and she backs up. Use a voice command (I say “step”) when her next step is going to take her off the edge, do it until she will back up anywhere with just a bump on the lead. Then do it in the trailer a thousand more times. I have a friend that loads her horse with a bridle on and backs her out with drive lines.... It works, but jeez what a pain! I just open my divider and get out of the way lol Be careful, a trailer is no place for an argu-ment!!

dream_chaserRE: JRCAll my colts get the step by step how they feel comfortable, and I’ve had days where all we did was get the front legs on and it’s fine with that....a horse that goes Mach 10 backwards out I hate, all my horses are taught to stop with front legs still in then proceed back.....but that takes teaching proper whoa commands and definitely trust

outside the trailer! It’s never an over night thing to happen.....

Used2BI agree with Wild West. Its not the backing up that’s a problem...its that step down that she’s balking about. Set up something on your farm to simulate stepping down out of the trailer.....back her off down the pond bank...back off a step down at your barn....figure out something to step her down off of while backing and I’d say your trailer issue will become a non-issue.

daisycake123I bought a mare one time got her home she would back out she would,get to,the back door with her feet and the she would run forward. So i finally tied a rope to ring the

tail piece hangs on, the aroung her chest and pulled to the outside and two of us pulled for an hour until i accidently got her out, after that she backed out.

horsefeverRE: Hollywood’s Fanagree agree agree. set her up for success. Either park the trailer where the drop off is minimal or set up scenario to stimulate backing over a drop so she will learn that she is not backing into a bottomless pit.

guadriverratThe best way I have found to fix this and keep the horse for having a bad experience is to back the trailer up to an embankment or something similar that eliminates the step down completely(like a ramp). I like to walk them in and back them out until the feel VERY comfortable and confident do-ing it. This is especially important if she has already developed behavioral issues related to unloading. Then I will move the trailer so there is a few inches to the ground. If you encounter resistance then go back to a smaller step down making sure she is relaxed and not worried. And just keep in-creasing the step down. This is definitely one of those issues where patience pays off

Accredited Quarter Horsemen From Across America Clamoring To Compete at Fifth Consecutive Successful Horse Racing Season

America’s biggest, most prestigious and successful Quarter Horse racing stables have been loading in to Miami-Dade’s famed Hialeah Park for its Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association (FQHRA)-sanctioned 2013-2014 winter racing meet that began on Friday, November 29. Through the FQHRA’s stewardship, the vibrance and beauty of Florida horse rac-ing will be broadcast internationally throughout the United States and across three separate continents on a daily basis.

“We’ve got all our 830 stalls full, I’ve got some horsemen on hold, I’ve got others stabled at nearby training facilities, and even more who want to come,” Hialeah Park Racing Secretary Matt Crawford effused.

A former Texas horse racing official, Crawford has been busy recruit-ing accredited Quarter Horse racing stables and top trainers for the meet since he was hired by Hialeah Park earlier this year. “Our bigger stables are all coming back: Donnie Strickland, Charlton Hunt, Judd Kearl, Brad Bolen, Gary Walker, Alfredo Gomez, Ron David, and John Stine-baugh,” he said. “And most of them are bringing more horses.”

Indeed . . . horses, horses and more horses was the reason most cited by local area businesses as their biggest economic boost during Hiale-ah’s last season, as FQHRA-accredited horsemen rushed to hire enough employees to care for their high-dollar, high-powered racehorses, and scrambled for food, lodging, meals, equipment, gas and other supplies to carry them through the next several months of doing business in South Florida.

Hialeah Park’s fifth consecutive FQHRA meet has been described as its most successful and ambitious undertaking to date, and the 40-day pro-gram “ . . . will prove that Hialeah Park is a serious player and is working hard to establish a position of prominence in North American Quarter Horse racing,” Hialeah Park Owner and Chairman of the Board John J. Brunetti Sr. explained.

The FQHRA is the Florida Chapter of the American Quarter Horse Association, an international organization of nearly 350,000 members that regulates and sanc-tions accredited Quarter Horse racing (or “Q-Racing”) to ensure that animal welfare and integrity remain paramount to produce a quality racing product.AQHA-accredited Quarter Horse racing annually produces thousands of sanc-tioned races that amounted in 2012 to $131.5 million in purse money. Accred-ited Quarter Horse racing generated more than $300 million in wagering at U.S. racetracks in 2012.

FOR 550 YARDSHialeah, FL / December 15, 2013 – Glenn Graff’s five-year-old gelding Joltin Jess, trained by Matt Frazier and ridden to victory by Shanley Jack-son, left his eight rivals in the dust and well-beaten in winning Sunday’s $30,000 Crystal River Stakes at Hialeah Park by over two lengths in world-record time for 550 yards.

Circle S Ranch– broke sharply under Jackson, took command early, drifted out slightly in the late stages of the race, but prevailed by 2 ¼ lengths over Jets Quick Fortune and stopped the timer in 26.033 seconds. That clocking was .063 of a second faster that the 26.096 standard set by Icu Cash at Zia Park in 2011. It was almost a half-second better than the previous Hialeah Park track record for 550 yards, a time of 26.528 recorded by Riden With The King in 2012.

The victory allowed Joltin Jess to make amends for a disappointing end –for him– in the Orange Blossom Stakes on opening day November 29. In that race, the gelding crossed the finish line second, a neck behind winner Doyles Dashing Star, but he was disqualified for interference and placed 9th (last).

Trainer Frazier said he made some equipment changes after the Orange Blossom that seemed to make a difference. “We tried a new bit, one that we hoped would give Shanley (Jackson) more control, and it worked out well,” Frazier said in the winner’s circle. “He ran well. We knew he could. He’s a heckuva horse!”

And Jackson agreed. “I knew he’d be tough if I could keep him running straight at full speed,” he added. “That was the idea with the new bit and that’s how it worked out.”

The Crystal River did not go well, however, for Doyles Dashing Star, the seven-year-old mare who was looking to stay unbeaten in the 2013-14 Hialeah Marathon Series and win for the 3rd straight time overall. She ducked in at the start, veered to the outside of the course, and finished 6th, never a threat for the major placings.

After the top two –Joltin Jess and Jets Quick Fortune– Sheila Tequilla took 3rd and Bucket List 4th. The remaining order of finish was: Lethal Volt, Doyles Dashing Star, Sheza Fast Memorie, Call Me Sundown, and The Granite Jewel. Eyeontheline was declared at morning scratch time.

Hialeah, FL / December 22, 2013 – Barbara Chase & Vanessa Bartoo’s Anna Delovely, the 8th fastest qualifier in the trials three weeks ago, wore down pacesetter Ja Gols Playboy in the final yards to win Sunday’s $88,880 FQHRA Stallion Stakes Futurity at Hialeah Park.

The sorrel daughter of Furyofthewind (Corona Cartel) by Pritzi Too (Pritzi Dash) made up for a non-threatening fourth-place try in her De-

cember 1 qualifier by breaking alertly under jockey Omar Reyes, finding clear sailing in the middle of the track, and surging late to win by one length while recording a time of 17.647 seconds for 350 yards.

“I knew she would run much better today,” said winning rider Reyes. “She didn’t break well in the trials but today was completely different. With 200 yards to go, I asked her for more, she dug in hard, and she gave me all she had in the final yards.”

Anna Delovely, who was still a maiden entering her 6th lifetime start, scored for trainer John Stinebaugh, who has conditioned the two-year-old for 5 of those outings. In her only effort for trainer Roy Marcom, Jr., the filly earned $51,203 for a near-miss second-place finish in the

The winner, bred in Missouri by Jim Streelman or Bill Dale in April of 2011, earned $38,091 for her victory and increased her lifetime earnings to $89,294. Sent off at 7-1 in the wagering, she rewarded her pari-mutuel backers with a juicy $17.20 win payoff.

The race did not go as expected for the fastest two qualifiers, Eye Go Steakin and A Tac Bunny. The former –off at 3-1 odds– loomed into contention mid-race but flattened out late and finished 5th, while the latter –the 8-5 favorite– was off a step slowly and bumped, trailed throughout, and finished 9th and last.

After Anna Delovely and Ja Gols Playboy, the remaining order of finish in the 2013 FQHRA Stallion Stakes Futurity was: Spittin Jes-sie, Zoomininthewind, Eye Go Streakin, Jazzing Dreamer, Streakin Gatorgirl, Tmf Good Cartel, and A Tac Bunny.

Records Broken at 2013National Finals Rodeo

Were you watching last month? The National Finals Rodeo on GAC had several records broken over the ten go-rounds.

Kaycee Feild (Payson, UT), won his third consecutive bareback title with earnings of $239,465. Feild won the average/aggregate title with 823 points over the ten go rounds.

“Each one gets better for me,” Feild said. “That’s huge for me. I want to break records and I want to set my own records. I want to do things nobody’s done before. I got some inspiration from Bruce Ford telling my dad that I’m such a good rider.”

Hunter Cure (Holliday, TX) won his first steer wrestling title with earnings of $173,355. His aggregate score of 53.10 was good enough for third in the aggregate results earning $30,649.

“I’m trying to wrap my mind around it at the moment,” said Cure. “The key this week was a great horse and a great hazer, Riley Duvall. He did an unbelievable job all week long and I’m greatly apprecia-tive.”

Header Clay Tryan (Billings, MT), and heeler Jade Corkill (Fallon, NV), took the season titles in the team roping. Tryan earned $179,688, and Corkill tallied up $178,057.

Saddle bronc rider Chad Ferley (Oelrichs, SD) won his second title with year end earnings of $204,432. He finished third in the aggre-gate standings with 725 (on nine of ten broncs) to earn $30,649

Shane Hanchey (Sulphur, LA), topped the average/aggregate stand-ings with 80.10 in the tie down roping points to break the record of 84.00 set by Fred Whitfield in 1997. Hanchey earned the season title with an event-record $207,672.

At the end of the excitement, Sherry Cervi (Marana, AZ) was the big-gest winner of the week. She had won her fourth barrel racing season title and the ten-round average/aggregate title. Cervi placed in all ten rounds, something only four other barrel racers have ever done, Kristi Peterson being the last in 1997 aboard “Bozo.”

Cervi’s aggregate time of 138.15 would also break the record of 138.26 previosulsy set by Jill Moody in 2010.

London, OH, — Horsemen from throughout the region are already plan-ning ahead for the 2014 Equine Affaire which will take place at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus on April 10th through the 13th. The program of the upcoming event will include more than 200 different clinics, seminars, and demonstrations on a broad range of equine disciplines and horse-related topics conducted by many of the nation’s leading coaches, competitors, horse trainers, and horse management experts. Though most event attendees choose to watch the clinics from the stands, se-lected horses and riders have the opportunity to participate in the clinics through Equine Affaire’s “Ride With The Best” program.

The Clinics and Clinicians. Whether you’re interested in improving your dressage test score, shortening your horse’s barrel runs, perfecting your reining patterns, adding finesse to your jumping skills, or simply improv-ing your riding skills and your horse’s performance, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to receive individual instruction from the outstand-ing clinicians who will be participating in Equine Affaire’s Ride With the Best program. Among the presenters who will be participating are “general” horse and horsemanship trainers Guy McLean, Stacy Westfall, Kerry Kuhn, and Richard Winters. Clinicians offering sessions in the western disciplines will include Stacy Westfall (reining), Molly Powell (barrel racing), Richard Winters (reined cowhorse), and Dana Hokana (western pleasure). Those conducting clinics in English disciplines will include Bernie Traurig (jumpers), Janet Foy and Michael Barisone (dres-sage), Dana Hokana (hunter under saddle), Jim Wofford (eventing), and Marc Johnson (driving). If you have one or more horses that are halter broke and ready to be started under saddle, you may want to consider applying to have your horse trained in Equine Affaire’s new “Foundation First” clinics. Guy McLean, Stacy Westfall, and Richard Winters will be presenting Foun-dation First clinics over the four days of the event. Each will train one unbroke horse to be ridden, and attendees and horse owners will be able to observe their progress through daily clinics. The Foundation First clin-ics will NOT be a race or competition. The focus will be on creating the proper foundation in training a horse to be ridden and on progressing at the rate that is appropriate for the individual horse. Retired Racehorse Barrel Racing Event Gets a New Name and New Possibilities

The “X” in the newly renamed “Ultimate X Showdown” doesn’t stand for ex-boyfriends or ex-wives, but it does have something in common with the X Games…namely that the toughest, fastest and strongest ath-letes will be on-hand to compete, only the “X” in this competition stands for “ex-racehorse”. On September 5, 2014, the Dreaming of Three Foun-dation will host its second all off-track Thoroughbred barrel racing event at the Simmons Equestrian Center in Negley, Ohio. And this year, a new name was in order.

Originally conceived as the “Extreme Retired Racehorse Makeover”, the event sought a name change this year after a little letter from a rather big company forced the founder, Jacqueline Harris, to consider a name change. “When we created this event last year, I did not in my wildest dreams expect our event would be big enough or get enough national at-tention to get us noticed by the corporate suits at Disney. I just liked the name and didn’t think of any similarities!” said Jacqueline of the request by Disney’s legal team for the event to have a name change (it apparently infringing on their “Extreme Home Makeover” tv show). “I guess we

The Ultimate X Showdown invites barrel racing trainers to seek out and the retrain an ex-racehorse that comes to them with no prior trainer, other than what they learn at the track. The team of horse and rider then has 100 days to refine their barrel racing technique before the final competi-tion in September. “Last year we filled the competition, using just word of mouth advertising,” says Jacqueline. “This year we would like to see 100 or more riders apply and hope to see some of the barrel world’s big-gest names as well. I know they are out there, competing every weekend beside the rest of us on Quarter Horses, we just don’t know it, as it’s not advertised. I know that Martha Josey competed on OTTB’s and I hope we can see more riders consider these great horses. ” All proceeds from the event go to support off-track Thoroughbred placement and marketing through several nationally accredited Thoroughbred rescues.

AAEP Convention Brings Nearly 6,600 to Music City for Equine Education

The 59th Annual Convention of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, held Dec. 7 – 11 in Nashville, Tenn., attracted 6,592 vet-erinary professionals, guests and exhibitors, making it the fourth largest convention in the AAEP’s history.

In addition to four days of education covering topics ranging from pain management to sport horse medicine, the Convention featured famed horse trainer Buck Brannaman as the keynote speaker. Renowned lame-ness expert Dr. Sue Dyson delivered the prestigious Frank J. Milne State-of-the-Art Lecture.

“Planning for each convention begins 18 months in advance,” said David Foley, AAEP executive Director. “I extend sincere appreciation to this year’s program chair, Dr. Jeff Blea, and the Educational Programs Com-mittee for developing an extremely well received and comprehensive ex-perience. This year’s convention was simply one of the best.”

“I am very pleased to be serving on the AHC Board,” said Thomason. “I have participated with the AHC in various ways over the years, and very much appreciate the importance and good work they have done for many years. I am glad to be a part, and help however I can.”

“The AHC is very pleased that Bill Thomason has agreed to serve on the board,” said AHC president Jay Hickey. “He has been a leader in the racing industry for many years and his experience will be an excellent addition to the AHC’s Board.”

Thomason is a member of The Jockey Club, a board member of the Na-tional Thoroughbred Racing Association, Thoroughbred Racing Associa-tions, Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Foundation, Kentucky Chamber and Central Kentucky Chapter of the American Heart Association. He formerly served as the assistant treasurer for the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association/Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders and was a member of the audit committee of Breeders’ Cup Limited. Thomason also previously served as treasurer of the Thorough-bred Club of America.In addition to his involvement in the equine industry, Thomason is an active community leader. He was chairman of the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce (now Commerce Lexington), chairman of the Lexington Arts and Cultural Council, and chairman of the Board of First United Methodist Church.

Thomason graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. in Accounting in 1977 and a Masters in Business Administration in 1978. He worked for two years at the accounting firm of Alexander Grant & Co., before joining Mill Ridge Farm, where he worked for 28 years as Financial and Administrative Manager.

Thomason replaces Nick Nicholson, who was the head of Keeneland for many years and a past Chairman of the AHC. “Nick Nicholson has been involved with the AHC for nearly 30 years in various capacities,” noted Hickey. “We appreciate his long-standing service to our organization and the horse industry in general and know we can call on his expertise whenever we need it.”

Happy New Years everyone!In this issue of the Horse Resource you will find the results of our annual Thanksgiving Weekend Preferred Show. This year’s show paid out $25,591 to its contestants. All division winners received a IBRA jacket. Please see the pictures included recognizing our race leaders. With the turn of the New Year our new site is going to be launching! You will notice several changes, but the basic functionality of our site which sets the IBRA apart will be maintained. We thank all of you for your patience as this task has taken much longer than what we had originally estimated. We feel in the end it will be worth it as our desire is to give you a more efficient site which we can keep better updated.

2013 IBRA National Finals 3D Champion DeDe Koger and GD Dashing BayouDeDe and Goober, as he is affectionately known, entered the arena at draw 179 to run a 15.671 and take home the 3D National Champion title! The pair earned $1,585.00, a Custom Carrol Leather Trophy Jacket, ProRider Saddle, Monsoon Trophy Buckle, Handmade Saddle Stand and Quality Oxy-gen products.

DeDe’s barrel racings interest began at a very early age being brought up by her father and former barrel racer, Ray Overlander. Goober was actually foaled by the last horse her father ever rode. DeDe and Goo-ber have been paired up for three years now. She took the reins after Goober was started by an “amazing friend” and veteran barrel racer, Bob Jaqua. A big thank you to DeDe for her years of support to our organization and wishing her much continued success!

Upcoming Preferred Shows and Futurities: Last year we began to change our show fliers to be more contestant friendly starting with dropping all late fees for Open, Youth and Mas-ters. I would like to make sure that everyone is aware that while the futurity entry does increase after the deadline, the increase is not a late fee. It is simply a higher entry fee which does go into the pay-back! We have also lowered the stall fees for our January and March Preferred Shows. We will no longer be including shavings in the stalls so that you may bring your own if you wish. This is all in effort to help make our Preferred Shows as affordable as we can make them with the added money and awards we will be handing out.

January 17th-19th, 2013 IBRA Preferred Show and Futurity hosted in Murfreesboro, TNThis show is being brought to our members in part by Best Ever Pads. We will be awarding 20 Best Ever pads! The show will also feature a $7,500 Added Futurity and a $10,000 Guaranteed + $3,000 additional added to the weekends Opens + $1000 added to the Masters and Youth Classes. An important note to make about the futurity at this show is that it will be ran as a 2D on a ½ Second Split. We have lowered the stall prices and you no longer have to buy a bag of shavings. You may bring your own if you wish. This is all in an effort to help keep the cost of the show as cheap as possible for you.

Return of the Match Race! April 25th-27th at the Central KY AG Center in Liberty, KY!We are very excited to have this show return to our preferred show roster as it is always great fun. The IBRA Match Race features an incredible payout. Below is a breakdown on the rules for the Match Race and the show flier is available on our website under Approved Shows for any state.

• Teams will consist of 5 different IBRA Members.• Team entry fee is $100 pre-entered ($20 per team member) or $150 day of show ($30 per member) -100% Payback• You may be on more than one team if you are running more than one horse. You may not run two horses on the same

team. You may not enter the same horse for multiple teams.• There will be a Long Go run in conjunction with the $10,000 Guaranteed that will determine the top 10 teams to come

back for the Match Race Finals on Sunday. • The Top 10 Teams to come back on Sunday will be determined on a point system based on the $10,000 Guaranteed

results. 1st place in each division will receive 20 points, 2nd place 19, 3rd place 18 and so on down to 20th place which will receive 1 point. Your 5 team members points will be added together and the top 10 teams with the highest amount of points will advance to the finals. Ex: If you have one team member win a division and the other 4 hit bar-rels or fall below the top 20 mark in any division then you would have 20 total points for your team.

• Payback: 100% of the entry fees plus $2,000 added. 75% of the total purse will be split between the winning team. The remaining 25% will be paid out to the 3 fastest times of the finals paid 50%, 30%, 20%.

• Example: If there are 40 teams X 100 EF= $4,000 + $2,000 added = $6,000 purse. 75% is $4,500 split between winning team ($900 each) 25% is $1,500 paid to 3 fastest times. $750 to the fastest, $450 to second, $300 to third.

Teams will consist of 5 different IBRA Members.Team entry fee is $100 pre-entered ($20 per team member) or $150 day of show ($30 per member) -100% PaybackYou may be on more than one team if you are running more than one horse. You may not run two horses on the

same team. You may not enter the same horse for multiple teams.There will be a Long Go run in conjunction with the $10,000 Guaranteed that will determine the top 10 teams to come back for the Match Race Finals on Sunday. The Top 10 Teams to come back on Sunday will be determined on a point system based on the $10,000 Guaranteed results. 1st place in each division will receive 20 points, 2nd place 19, 3rd place 18 and so on down to 20th place which will receive 1 point. Your 5 team members points will be added together and the top 10 teams with the highest amount of points will advance to the finals. Ex: If you have one team member win a division and the other 4 hit barrels or fall below the top 20 mark in any division then you would have 20 total points for your team.Payback: 100% of the entry fees plus $2,000 added. 75% of the total purse will be split between the winning team. The remaining 25% will be paid out to the 3 fastest times of the finals paid 50%, 30%, 20%.Example: If there are 40 teams X 100 EF= $4,000 + $2,000 added = $6,000 purse. 75% is $4,500 split between winning team ($900 each) 25% is $1,500 paid to 3 fastest times. $750 to the fastest, $450 to second, $300 to third.

Christopher L. Johnson, JD was born and raised in Kokomo, Indi-ana. He graduated from a Baptist liberal arts college with degrees in Pre-Law, Business and Theology; and from the University of San Diego School of Law. New Year’s Revolutions

Which one is you? “This year, I’m going to lose weight!” “Starting January 1, I’m going to get in better shape!” “Next year, when the season starts, I’m going to ride better than I

ever have!” “In 2014, I’m going to give up one of my bad habits!”

I’ve got no problems with New Year’s resolutions. A new year is often just what we need to motivate us to change a habit or improve something in our behavior.

This year, I’m suggesting something new - a New Year’s Revolution.

No, I’m not suggesting the overthrow of any government. I’m not ask-ing you to join a secret group like the Minutemen of the Revolutionary War. No one has to get on their horse and ride like Paul Revere. It’s nothing like that. I call it “LivExceptionally”. What it really means is that I am resolved that in 2014, I will become a better me than I was in 2013.

New Year’s Revolution is not complicated. It’s not really hard, either. The best part is it’s all about you and me. We don’t have to have anyone help us or cooperate. A New Year’s Revolution is about choosing to change our attitudes. It’s about keeping our perspective of life positive. It’s about complaining less and be thankful more.

I’m always amazed at how much we let ourselves get away with when we’d never let our kids or horses act in the same way. We have so many excuses and justifications for why we should be allowed to act this way or that. But, a New Year’s Revolution makes you responsible for you! Just think of it --- If you and I resolve to be a better version of who we were in 2013, we would change the world. Most likely, not only would we shock those who know us, we would motivate them to become better versions of who they are, also. The world would change one person at a time!

In the process, we would do all the things which are typically in New Year’s Resolutions. We’d lose weight. We’d get in better shape. We’d ride better than ever. We’d get rid of all the bad habits. Why? Because a New Year’s Revolution means we will work to be better in all things, so we are a better version of who we are.

So, I’m not making any New Year’s resolutions for 2014. I am commit-ting myself to an internal revolution that makes me a better version of who I am in this coming year, than I was in the last.

Rather than being the same old you, why don’t you join me!

“Monday Morning Sickness” is a broad term that frequently is used to describe a wide variety of muscle disorders that affect the performance horse. Other names given to this syndrome include exertional rhabdomyolysis, tying up, and azoturia. Historically it was thought that all horses showing evidence of muscle cramping and soreness have the same condition. However, research has shown that there are a number of specific disorders that fall under the term tying-up. Research has provided a much better understanding of the causes of tying-up and has led to improved methods for prevention of recurrent episodes.

The clinical signs of tying-up are varied, depending on the severity of the episode. In milder cases, affected horses will be a little stiff after training. At the other end of the spectrum, the intense pain associated with severe and generalized tying-up might have the horse to the point where he is unable to stand and bear weight. During exercise, affected horses develop a short, stiff stride; these signs can worsen if exercise is continued. Upon ceasing exercise, horses often are very reluctant to move and might adopt an unusual stance; The muscles of the hindquarters usually are the most severely affected. This area will be firm and painful, and cramping is evident when these muscles are palpated. Other signs might include profuse sweating and persistently elevated heart and respiratory rates due to pain. The pain persists for several hours after the onset of a tying-up episode.

In severe cases, horses will pass a dark, red-brown colored urine. This discoloration is due to the presence of a muscle protein called myoglobin and is called myoglobinuria. With extensive damage to muscle fibers, a large amount of myoglobin leak into the horse’s blood and subsequently are passed out of the body through the kidneys. If horses with myoglobinuria are allowed to become dehydrated, they might develop life threatening kidney damage.

Diagnosis of tying-up is confirmed by detection of elevated serum activities of creatine kinase (CK) and aspartate animotransferase (AST). Like myoglobin, these proteins are contained within muscle cells and are released into circulation when cells are damaged. CK levels, a specific indicator of muscle damage, increase rapidly with peak values occurring four to six hours after an episode of tying-up. Compared to CK, activities of AST increase and decrease more slowly; AST might remain elevated for seven to 10 days after an episode.

There are two broad category of tying up. Sporadic exertional rhabdomyolysis is the classification that applies to horses which, on rare occasion, experience an episode of

generalized tying-up. The second category is chronic exertional rhabdomyolysis, and this is when a horse experiences repeated episodes of ER, with the first episode usually occurring at a young age.

A common cause of sporadic tying-up is exercise that exceeds the horse’s underlying level of training or asking a horse to perform a maximum amount of exercise after a lay-off and with only minimal training before the event. Electrolyte imbalances,particularly low sodium and deficiencies of vitamin E and/or selenium might play a role in some cases..

The most frustrating muscle disorder is chronic exertional rhabdomyolysis. Affected horses are prone to repeated episodes of tying-up. Over the years, many different causes

of chronic tying-up have been proposed, but few have been proven. These include hormonal imbalances (particularly low thyroid hormone), electrolyte imbalances, lactic acidosis within muscle, and vitamin E and/or selenium deficiency. Electrolyte imbalances can be an important factor in the development of chronic tying-up. Imbalances of sodium, calcium, and phosphorus cancontribute to tying-up problems. Many affected horses showed marked improvement after addition of sodium or balancing of the calcium:phosphorus ratio in the diet. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and chloride are important for muscle function. Horses lose a large amount of these electrolytes in sweat. Therefore, heavy working horses may require electrolyte supplementation before, during, and after competition. Other types of athletic horses require additional salt in their diet (one to two tablespoons of table salt (NaCl) and lite KCl). However electrolyte imbalances are not the main cause of tying up.

Two major causes of chronic tying-up are recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER), in which there is a defect in the mechanism of muscle contraction and polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM), a disorder that results in storage of excess carbohydrate in muscle. Genetic sutudies suggest that RER is an inherited condition . The underlying problem is a defect in the mechanism for muscle contraction. The muscle has increased sensitivity to contraction when exposed to certain stimuli. It is possible that excitement triggers this abnormal response in the muscle of horses with RER The second common cause of chronic tying-up, polysaccharide storage myopathy, is a condition characterized by accumulation of glycogen ,a form of carbohydrate and an abnormal form of

polysaccharide, a complex carbohydrate in muscle. PSSM has been identified in Quarter Horses and related breeds, Appaloosas, Paints, warmbloods, draft horses, and Thoroughbreds..

Clinical signs of PSSM can develop at a young age, often when the horse enters training. Rest for a few days prior to exercise is a common triggering factor, but unlike RER, horses usually have a quiet personality. Some horses can be affected every time they exercise, while others might have only periodic episodes. However, it also is common for affected horses to have ongoing bouts of muscle damage that are not associated with clinical signs of tying-up, but which result in persistent elevations of serum CK.

Acutely tying up horses which are distressed, reluctant to move, or have discolored urine require immediate veterinary assistance. Correction of dehydration by administration intravenous fluids is of critical importance. Myoglobin is toxic to the kidneys, and dehydration along with myoglobinuria can result in development of kidney failure. Physical therapy is also an important part of the treatment plan. Walking as prescribed by an equine veterinarian, massage, warm baths and blankets are all part of the therapy for tying up.

In horses which tie-up two, three, or more times, a detailed diagnostic evaluation to identify an underlying cause of the exertional rhabdomyolysis is warranted. This work-up will include a complete blood count, serum chemistry and collection of a sample of urine to allow assessment of electrolyte balance. Another test is microscopic evaluation of muscle biopsy samples. Storage of abnormal polysaccharide is the main feature of muscle biopsies from horses with PSSM.

I hope everyone is safe and sound from this winter storm. I am chilling in my recliner. I had knee surgery on December 4th and I am down for at least six weeks and can’t even go to barn for three weeks....

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respec-tively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep rid-ing, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Con-gress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now try-ing his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

The Indiana High School Rodeo Association promotes rodeo and pre-serves the western culture with every activity they complete. Mem-

bers from the Indiana High School Rodeo Association participate every year in the Reading Rodeo for elementary kids. The Morgan Elementary teachers and staff hosted this reading program in New Salisbury, Indiana. This was the 15th year for the program, which is a great way to showcase the western heritage and rodeo life along with how fun it is to read.

Members from IHSRA demonstrate roping skills by teaching kindergar-teners to fifth graders how to handle and swing a rope to catch a steer head. There were six stations as described below:

*Campfire story: sit on a blanket and enjoy listening to a story of the long ago cowboy tales. *Campfire songs: gather round and sing along with our sing-ing cowboy. Go back to the good ol’ days and learn a cowboy jingle. *Hoedown: There’s a great deal of rhythm and rhyme in pic-

ture books as well as in the music we hear. Learn to line dance and enjoy some words put to music. *Ropin’ Rodeo: Just as with read-ing, practice does make perfect. Come on over and practice your ro-pin’ skills. *Walkabout: Reading will make you a winner!! Enjoy taking turns at winning a book and listen to some country music as you walkabout. *Chow: We hope y’all have an ap-petite for reading after this evening. Tonight’s activities are sure to make you hungry for some good chow. Chow is what the cowboys called their food at dinnertime.

The IHSRA members who helped these kids learn to rope and showed off their roping abilities while being excellent role models for rodeo cowboys and cowgirls were: Anna Dietrich, Derek Franks IHSRA Stu-dent President, Camrie Goodson IHSRA Queen, Gary Hook and Katlyn O’leary

IHSRA cowboys and cowgirls know the importance of a good education and in order to compete in the rodeo events every cowboy and cowgirl has to show their report card with passing grades. High School Rodeo promotes education and learning. This community service was a great way to showcase the IHSRA and teach our cowboys and cowgirls the importance of community involvement.

Happy New Year! This month brings our families back together for our 2012-2013 IJRA Awards banquet. The kids are always so excited to see all of their friends after a few months off. This year the awards banquet will be held Saturday January 25, 2014. Start time is 4:00 with food being served at 4:30.The address is: 1715 Stringtown Pike Cicero, IN 46034. The banquet will be catered with food provided by Jugs Catering. The cost will be $10.50/person (including members). Please complete and submit the banquet reservation form and return with your checks payable to IJRA to Sherri Zimmerman postmarked no later than January 3, 2014.

Don’t forget that sponsorship money for the 2013-2014 season will be due by the awards banquet. For new members or those who will not be attending the banquet please mail your sponsorship money to Sherri Zimmerman prior to the banquet.

IJRA has an exciting opportunity for our fundraiser this year. Raffle tickets will be handed out at the banquet this month for members to sell, with the opportunity for one person to win a Merhow bumper-pull trailer or a $4500 option. IJRA Board Members are working hard to line up trailer sponsors to help cover the cost of the trailer so that all raffle ticket proceeds can go to IJRA. If you know of a company or business who would love to promote themselves while supporting our kids, please contact one of our hard working board members.

The 2013-2014 rodeo schedule will pick back up in May on the 3rd and 4th with an IJRA rodeo at New Castle, we will then have a IJRA/Cinch State Finals rodeo at C Bar C in Cloverdale the weekend of May 17-18th. In June our rodeo will be held on the 14-15th at a location yet to be determined.

One of my favorite days of the year comes right before Christmas. It is the winter solstice and usually occurs on December 21st or 22nd.

The “winter solstice” (here in the northern hemisphere it is considered the Southern solstice) occurs on the shortest day and longest night of the year, when the sun’s daily maximum elevation in the sky is the lowest.

Did you get that? The “shortest day” of the year....why would I be excited about the shortest day - with the least amount of sunlight - of the year?

I’ll tell you why.

Once winter sets in (and it has really set in hard this year!) it is always sad for me to look outside at the bare trees, the brown grass and empty fields. The days grow shorter and life seems to slow down around here (especially at the barn.) Yes, there is a lot of beauty in this time of year, with the usual snow and a different landscape for a change, but the beginning of winter always seems barren and empty - almost hopeless to me.

With the days becoming shorter and shorter, the evenings seem to be less active and we rush to get to the house from the barn. Maybe I am the only one who feels this way, but it seems like the closer we get to the end of the year, the more it feels like “The End.”

Once the colder days arrive, I look forward to the shortest day of the year because after it’s arrival the days start to get LONGER! It is like a new beginning...the light at the end of the tunnel....a promise of warmer days to come.......HOPE!

And of course, like clockwork, the warmer days always come. We have come full circle again this year and the days are getting longer, we’re heading towards spring. I get so excited just thinking about it!

Have you ever heard the story of why people started bringing evergreen wreaths into their homes many, many years ago? (I did not know this until recently.) The way I understand it, because evergreens were the only plant or tree that stayed green throughout the cold and frozen winter months they seemed a sign of hope for spring and a reminder that life continued throughout the harsh and cold winter months, even thought there was little “proof” of that truth. The wreath became a symbol of HOPE..

This follows into the symbolism of the Advent wreath. The wreath is made of various evergreens, signifying continuous life. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. The four candles represent the four weeks of advent - HOPE, preparation, joy and love. The fifth candle, usually lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas, signifies Christ, the Light of the world.

I know Christmas has already passed, but the significance of the HOPE that Jesus brought to us over two thousand years ago should not just be celebrated on Christmas. We should be excited by this every day of the year.

Like the days growing longer, the sun shining a little brighter and warmer each day, the progressive lighting of the advent candles and

the wreath signifying continuous life, Jesus brought - and still brings - HOPE. There is something to look forward to if you know Jesus - if you’ve accepted Him as your Saviour through God’s plan of salvation.

Even thought it is cold and there is no sign of life outside right now....I know that spring will be here soon. Even though things can get hard and I may go through trials.....I know the promises of Christ.

It is exciting to me to think about what is next. Just as I get excited to see the new life coming forth with the green grass and flowers each spring, I am even more excited to see what is on the other side of this world

Salvation is a gift and a choice......

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Customizable Leaders’ Lists Introduced on equibase.com

Which horse has made the most starts in graded stakes in 2013? What jock-ey has the most victories in graded races on the turf this year?

Equibase Company LLC has made it easy to access this type of data with the introduction of leaders’ lists that can be filtered through a variety of categorical sorts in the Stats Central section on equibase.com.

Anyone visiting equibase.com to view the standings for horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners can now use these filters and then sort their custom-ized data set in either ascending or descending order by column to view the information from a different perspective.

The expanded North American racing leaders’ lists include every human and equine starter annually back to the year 2000.

“There are 118 different ways to customize the data in the horse category alone,” said Hank Zeitlin, president and chief operating officer for Equi-base Company. “And from each of those 118 data sets, you can then sort the list a dozen different ways – by starts, wins and earnings per start – to name just a few.”

Profile pages on equibase.com have also been enhanced to include every

graded stakes win for jockeys and trainers since 1976. Individual profiles for horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners have also been enhanced to in-clude special achievements such as year-end championships honors and Hall of Fame designations.

Equibase Company is a partnership between The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America and serves as the Thoroughbred industry’s official database. Through its website, mobile platform and mobile applications, Equibase offers a comprehensive menu of wagering products, statistical information and video race replays in sup-port of the North American Thoroughbred racing industry. 24th Annual Stallion Season Auction to be Held January 2-4

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 24th annual Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) Stallion Season Auction will be held Thursday, January 2 - Satur-day, January 4, 2014. The three-day fundraiser consists of a telephone and online auction and culminates with a live Select Stallion Season Auction at the Keeneland Entertainment Center in Lexington, Ky.

“Planning is in full swing for our annual Stallion Season Auction,” said Erin Crady, executive director of TCA. “The auction is our largest annual fund-raiser and is vital to TCA as it enables us to grant funds to Thoroughbred-

related non-profit organizations across the nation.” In 2013 TCA granted over $500,000 to more than 70 Thoroughbred industry related charities working within aftercare, backstretch community servic-es, education and therapeutic riding.

The majority of TCA’s seasons will be offered during the telephone and online auction. Online bidding will open at 9 a.m. EST on January 2 and continue through 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 4. Telephone bids will be accepted January 2-3, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and January 4, 9 a.m.–10 a.m. EST. Interested bidders may reg-ister to bid by visiting www.tca.org.

TCA to Honor John and Debby Oxley and Retired Racehorse Traning Project

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Thoroughbred Charities of America will honor John and Debby Oxley with the TCA Leadership Award and the Retired Race-horse Training Project with the TCA Industry Service Award at the 24th An-nual Select Stallion Season Auction to be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the Keeneland Entertainment Center in Lexington, Ky.

“John and Debby Oxley and the Retired Racehorse Training Project have made outstanding contributions to the Thoroughbred industry,” said Dan Rosenberg, president of TCA. “Both honorees embody the mission of Thor-oughbred Charities of America and it is our honor to recognize them for their tremendous efforts.”

The TCA Leadership Award is presented annually to an organization or in-dividual whose philanthropic endeavors are consistent with TCA’s mission. Past award winners include Frank Stronach, Fasig-Tipton, Darley, Todd Pletcher, Roy and Gretchen Jackson and Bill Casner.

John and Debby Oxley are prominent Thoroughbred owners and breeders with notable runners including 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos, 1999 Breeders’ Cup Distaff and Eclipse Award winner Beautiful Pleasure and 1995 Kentucky Oaks winner Gal in a Ruckus. The couple has been a strong advocate for the Thoroughbred industry and has supported numerous Thoroughbred aftercare organizations, backstretch and education programs and research organizations.

“We are deeply honored and humbled by this award,” said John and Debby Oxley. “The work of TCA is critically important to the Thoroughbred indus-try and we enthusiastically support TCA. We commend all TCA recipient organizations, their staff and volunteers who do the daily work to support and care for retired thoroughbreds. Thank you for your dedication.”

The TCA Industry Service Award is presented annually to a current TCA grantee that exemplifies TCA’s mission. Past award winners include Belmont Child Care Association, Old Friends, Kentucky Equine Humane Center, Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue, New Vocations and Tranquility Farms.

Retired Racehorse Training Project (RRTP), a current recipient of TCA fund-ing, is an organization dedicated to increasing demand in the sport and rec-reation marketplace for Thoroughbred ex-racehorses through public events, clinics, training publications, videos and internet tools. Its recent Thorough-bred Makeover and National Symposium at Pimlico Racecourse brought to-gether the organizations, farms, and individuals who are the bridge to second careers for these horses while showcasing the talents of Thoroughbreds who had transitioned from racing to ten different equestrian disciplines.

“Thoroughbred racehorses are the most magnificent animals on the planet, and there is no group of people we would rather be honored by for our work on their behalf than the Board of Directors of TCA,” said RRTP president Steuart Pittman. “Most of us are dumbfounded that Thoroughbreds lost so much of the riding horse market share in the last three decades to other breeds, but all of us understand how important it is to take that share back. We believe that with TCA on our team we will.”

TOBA Announces U.S. Graded and Listed Stakes for 2014

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thor-oughbred Owners and Breeders Association today presented its listing of U.S. Graded and Listed Stakes Races for 2014, the results of its annual grading session conducted December 4 in Lexington. The Committee reviewed 713 unrestricted U.S. stakes races with a purse of at least $75,000, and assigned Graded status to 455 of them, two fewer than were graded in 2013, and Listed status to 190 races. A total of five Graded races were upgraded, including one new Grade I race and four new Grade II races; three new Grade III races were named; 30 new Listed races were upgraded from Non-Listed Black Type status. Three races which car-ried Graded status and 25 races which carried Listed status in 2013 are no longer eligible for grading. One race was upgraded to Grade I status for 2014: the La Troienne S. at Churchill Downs. Two races were downgraded from Grade I to Grade II for 2014: the Prioress S. at Saratoga and Princess Rooney H. at Calder Race Course. Four races were upgraded to Grade II status for 2014: the Azeri S. at Oak-lawn Park and Sabin S., Holy Bull S. and Swale S. at Gulfstream Park. Seven races were downgraded from Grade II to Grade III in 2014: the Go For Wand S. at Aqueduct, Santa Barbara H. at Santa Anita Park, Vagrancy H. and Dwyer S. at Belmont Park, Sanford S. at Saratoga, La Jolla S. at Del Mar and Hutcheson S. at Gulfstream Park. I thought this past month was going to be a horrible mess, but what I thought sounded like a bad idea turned into a little extra rest for me.

Let me fill you in. We (and when I say we, I mean the lady of the house) volunteered to babysit - “puppysit” - for a family member’s new puppy. Of course, this puppy is a weiner-dog - I’m beginning to see a trend here. I’ll admit she is quite a cutie. She is a brown and white spotted, similar to Miss Maybelline, and she has the cutest little tail. It was broken when she was younger (not sure how) and it causes you to give her a double take. Her name is “BB.” Her big brother is “Bullet.” (Cute, right?)

Anyway, when BB arrived I thought Pandora’s Box had been opened in the living room of our house. She was running around, barking and sliding across the floor like a wild thing. I let her know very quickly that I wasn’t interested and was thinking to myself, “how long is this going to last?”

It didn’t take long for me to realize that having BB around was going to take some heat off of me. Remember how Miss Maybelline liked to tug on my “jowl?” Well, guess what....turn about is fair play. It seems that is common among those weiner-dogs and BB has decided to stretch out Miss Maybelline’s Jowl.

While those two are running around tearing up the house, yard, barn....whatever, I’m getting some real peace and quiet. Puppsitting is great!

No Winner Yet...Name that Cover

I thought this past month was going to be a horrible mess, but what I thought sounded like a bad idea turned into a little extra rest for me.

Let me fill you in. We (and when I say we, I mean the lady of the house) volunteered to babysit - “puppysit” - for a family member’s new puppy. Of course, this puppy is a weiner-dog - I’m beginning to see a trend here. I’ll admit she is quite a cutie. She is a brown and white spotted, similar to Miss Maybelline, and she has the cutest little tail. It was broken when she was younger (not sure how) and it causes you to give her a double take. Her name is “BB.” Her big brother is “Bullet.” (Cute, right?)

Anyway, when BB arrived I thought Pandora’s Box had been opened in the living room of our house. She was running around, barking and sliding across the floor like a wild thing. I let her know very quickly that I wasn’t interested and was thinking to myself, “how long is this going to last?”

It didn’t take long for me to realize that having BB around was going to take some heat off of me. Remember how Miss Maybelline liked to tug on my “jowl?” Well, guess what....turn about is fair play. It seems that is common among those weiner-dogs and BB has decided to stretch out Miss Maybelline’s Jowl.

While those two are running around tearing up the house, yard, barn....whatever, I’m getting some real peace and quiet. Puppsitting is great!
