An Easter Message From Fr. Wayne Each year it seems as though the promise and hope of spring comes earlier than the year before. Prior to Ash Wednesday of this year, bluebonnets were beginning to bloom in the country. Indian red blankets, phlox, buttercups and all sorts of wildflowers dot the hills between Houston and Austin. These native wildflowers have provided a visual of Texas’ beauty and have signaled the end of winter and the beginning of spring. As I write this Easter message to you, I do so on Friday prior to the 5th Sunday of Lent. Our bulletin publisher has asked for the Easter message to be sent to them early, so that they too may spend time in isolation. Indeed, for many of us, Lent has been a time of isolation—a time of quiet, reflection, and solitude in prayer. This is perhaps a great gift that has been given to us as a result of Corona Virus. On the other hand, some have felt disconnected, depressed, shunned, and searching desperately for purpose and meaning. I read a reflection today that I find powerful and I want to share it with you at this time. It appears to me that Jesus Christ, who is the Easter Gift to all of us, is trying His best to redirect our attention and focus as a world, nation, community and people. On Friday, March 27, 2020, Kathy Lee Gifford posted the following on twitter: “In three short months, just like He did with the plagues of Egypt, God has taken away everything we worship. You want to worship athletes; I will shut down stadiums and arenas. You want to worship musicians; I will shut down every venue. You want to worship actors; I will shut down the theaters. You want to worship money; I will shut down the economy and collapse the stock market. You want to worship your own bodies; I’ll close all the gyms. You want to worship your own intellect and pat yourself on the back with a graduation, I’ll close your schools. You want to place your trust in your friends and not in Me. I’ll make sure you can’t even meet with them physically. You don’t want to seek my face and worship Me; I will make it where you can’t go to church. If my people who are called by name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Maybe we need a vaccine maybe we don’t need a vaccine, maybe we need to take this time of isolation from the distractions of the world and have a personal revival where we focus on the ONLY person in the world that really matters…Jesus Christ! Start the revival in your home, in your hearts…Spread the Love of Jesus. AMEN.” While this reflection is both “food for thought” and invites great introspection, it can also be jarring to the reader. We must remember, God never delights in the misfortune and sin of any person. Rather, He allows moments to occur in time to draw our attention and focus to the fact that what we must do is change and, change for the better. God is not a punitive God. God grieves with us in our pain and suffering. His desire is only to encourage us to reach for His Son, Jesus Christ and in word and action, emulate Him in all that we say and do. God’s son, Jesus Christ is a God of love, mercy and compassion. It is this same God of love and compassion that allowed His only son to be born for us and to die for us—so that you and I, might have eternal life and, have it to the full. Perhaps this Easter, unlike any Easter we have ever celebrated, let us together focus our love, our time, our faith on the One who is Triumphant over every ill. Let us live by the mantra, ‘faith first’ and find joy in Jesus Christ, risen from the dead who came to save and give life to those who believe. I pose this Easter “opportunity” to all of us. In this season of great joy, invite someone to accompany you to mass. It may be a family member, a friend, your neighbor, a stranger. Seek someone who has been purposely distanced from faith for whatever the reason may be and invite him/her to experience the true reason for our Easter Joy, Jesus Christ! For Christ is triumphant over the grave…Today, Tomorrow and Always!!!
Happy Easter to You, One and All!Fr. Wayne W. Wilkerson, Pastor
