TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME PAGE 1 OCTOBER 21, 2018 Thoughts from Fr. Scott I thank everyone who passed along birthday wishes a week ago. Thursday, October 11 th , I turned 47 years old. It was a great day and wonderful to be with the parish family. If you passed along a wish, card, gift or smart comment, I thank you. I truly appreciate being remembered and always enjoy your wonderful baked treats. I thank the school children who made cards, sang happy birthday to me and sent along other wonderful greetings. They actually earned themselves a day off for their efforts in honor of the Pastor’s birthday; date to be determined. Our children are creative and a delight to be around. Their cards were simply wonderful and I enjoyed them very much. Again, thank you to one and all; it was a joyous yet peaceful birthday celebration. October is a wonderful time for us to have meetings for those involved in liturgical ministries. To this end we will be hosting a meeting for all lectors on Monday, 10/22, at 7:00 p.m. for current lectors and anyone who wishes to be new to the ministry of reading at Mass. The meeting will be held in the Church and I will be leading the meeting. Any person who is Confirmed and actively involved in our parish community can volunteer to participate in the liturgical ministries. Please consider being an active part in the liturgical life of the parish family. If you decide to become active in any of these ministries: Eucharistic minister, Lector or Altar Server please contact us at the parish office. This is a particular reminder to all of those young people who might want to assist as Altar Servers. We are currently training new servers over the next few weeks. If you want to be trained to be an Altar Server but have not been contacted, please call the Church office to get the specifics for the sessions. There is still time to join the ministry. Thank you again for your assistance at the Altar, it helps us to provide beautiful and holy liturgies. This week, our Scriptures remind us to be humble before God. Humility begins by our submitting our individual will to our Heavenly Father. In this, we ought to be careful to accept God as He presents Himself; not attempting to define Him in our own personal image and likeness. God does not change; our understanding of Him evolves because of our human condition and education. This vision attempts to help us understand God more completely and sharpen our thought. Hence, we are more apt to remain faithful to Him in everything we proclaim with our voices and lives. True humility challenges another in Love only. In the Gospel this week, we see how arrogance leads to jealousy. Arrogance and jealousy are to be avoided at all costs. As Jesus reminds us, it shall not be so among us. Rather, we are to recognize the Lord of our lives with joy and humility. Humility makes us authentically Christian and honors our lives in Christ. Always remember: God is pleased when we recognize, admit and repent of our shortcomings. So, desire authentic change of heart, it leads to True Love! God Bless and have a great week! Fr. Scott Thought for the week: True humility fosters stability and strength leading to Christian compassion and understanding!

11th, I turned 47 years old. It was a great day and wonderful to be with the parish family.

If you passed along a wish, card, gift or smart comment, I thank you. I truly appreciate

being remembered and always enjoy your wonderful baked treats. I thank the school

GATHER THEM HOME

All Souls Day Community Memorial Service is scheduled for November 2nd. The final expression of our faith as Catholics is the blessed and sacred burial in a Catholic Cemetery. It is our opportunity to rest among fellow believers, awaiting the Resurrection to life everlasting. By burying the bodies of the faithful, we confirm our faith in the resurrection of the body - that death is not the end.

Gather Them Home is a no-cost mission of the Archdiocese of Detroit to help those looking for a final resting place for a loved one’s remains they currently have at home or in safe keeping.

There will be three locations for the All Souls Day Community Memorial Services:

9:00am at Holy Sepulchre, Southfield

11:00am at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery, Brownstown

2:00pm at St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroe

UPCOMING MINISTRY

MEETING

As we update and organize our liturgical practice it

is necessary to meet with the different ministries. Fr.

Scott and Fr. Christopher will be leading these meetings

and they encourage any member of our parish who has

received the sacrament of Confirmation, and would like

to participate in these ministries, to join them. All

meetings will take place in the church.

LECTOR MEETING

Lectors, both new and current, are asked to attend

the meeting on Monday, October 22nd at 7:00pm.

MUSIC MATTERS

Pardon our dust… You may have noticed that the cantors are currently not singing during congregational songs. This is temporary, and cantors will be back leading songs soon. Meanwhile we are

having an in-service about effective song leading technique, and the cantors are observing.

When leading a congregation in song, there is a “sweet spot” in which the song leader has an audible presence with the congregation, but is not so loud as to overwhelm the worshiping assembly and convert them to a listening audience. This sweet spot volume is a moving point, depending on how the congregation is responding.

The song leader is a little louder if assembly singing is weak, and progressively softer, if the assembly is singing more strongly. For example, the assembly needs little vocal support on America the Beautiful - in fact a loud song leading presence in that situation could be viewed as competitive or even disruptive. In the words of the Roman Missal, the Church’s source for all liturgical direction: “…as the congregation finds its voice and sings with increasing confidence, the cantor’s voice should correspondingly recede.”

Next week we will discuss the role of the primary Minister of Music: the Worshiping Assembly… Tim Smith

REST IN PEACE

Remember those who have

gone before us

Jonas (Herb) Person

“Happy are those who have

died in the Lord;

Let them rest from their labors

For their good deeds

go with them.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with their families. May

the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of

God, rest in peace. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP CSA MINUTE

PRO-LIFE MINISTRIES

The 12th annual Building Bridges to a Culture of Life Youth Conference, “Unleash the Culture of Life,” will take place at Divine Child High School in Dearborn next Saturday, October 27.

Your CSA gifts help fund this annual gathering planned for youth in eighth grade through college by their peers, which is hosted by the Building Bridges to a Culture of Life youth organization and co-sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit. Participants will learn how a consistent life ethic truly builds a Culture of Life, where every life is valued through breakouts addressing sexual integrity and a panel of young people sharing how to “Unleash Compassion and Dignity for Every Life” through personal testimonies of ministering to the homeless, forgotten, handicapped, immigrants, DACA students, and students on campus.

The day will conclude with a Vigil Mass, dinner, and fellowship. Admission is $20 and includes a T-shirt.

Details about the Prolife Youth Conference can be found at www.prolifeyouth.com. For more information about this and other CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, go to aod.org.

29th SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

Today, Jesus professes in St. Mark’s Gospel, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant. The Book of the Prophet Isaiah and the Letter to the Hebrews also indicate examples of Christ’s humility for us to model. In other words, glory in God’s Kingdom is not achieved through high status or rank, like the secular world proclaims, but through being a humble servant to all. This includes service to the poor among us. In a spirit of evangelization, expressed through stewardship, we strive to offer our time, talent, and treasure in thanksgiving to God to our parish and other worthy causes. Every parish community is always in need of readers, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Parish Pastoral Council members, Finance Council members, Evangelization and Stewardship Committee members, and school volunteers, to name a few ways in which we can serve God through the Church. God graces everyone with at least one unique gift to use to build up the Kingdom that no one else can do. To discover your gifts, attend a Called and Gifted seminar in your area.

MERCY IN ACTION

Our Lady of the Lakes, along with other parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit are coordinating events to show mercy and kindness during the month of October. Our Parish will be having a white sock drive for the homeless. The socks will be distributed by our students at the Matchan Nutrition Center. We are also collecting food for St. Anne’s in Ortonville and St. Rita’s in Holly. The food will help our neighboring Catholic parishes feed the hungry. Also needed are grocery store gift cards to buy food items that will be used for sack lunches for the Matchan Nutrition Center. Please look for flyers in the back of church with food items listed on them or white sock reminders. Bring the needed items back to church by October 29th.

PILGRIMAGE TO THE

HOLY LAND With Fr. Brian Meldrum & Fr. Mario Amore

In June 2019, Fr. Mario Amore and Fr. Brian Meldrum are leading a pilgrimage from Detroit to the Holy Land. If you are interested in joining them, they would love to have you walk the footsteps of Jesus with them as His disciples in the 21st Century! Pricing starts at $4,650 double occupancy. Visit ctscentral.net for full itinerary.

We hope that you'll prayerfully consider joining us on this adventure. We know God has great things planned for us in these most holy places!

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

This Mission Month, Pope Francis calls all of us – children of God – to be “voices for mission.” Raise your voice by supporting the priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay catechists who provide loving service to those most in need – in places like Uganda where people face food uncertainty and violence… in the Philippines where local clergy face martyrdom… in Oceania where people’s livelihoods are threatened by climate change… and in remote regions of Latin America where people are hearing the Gospel for the first time. May your faith remain ever young when it is open to the mission that Christ entrusts to us. Thank you! Envelopes are available on the tables in the back of church.

“CALLED TO SERVE”

All High School teens (grades 9th-12th) who volunteer at their parish are required to take Called to Serve.

To register for the Called to Serve workshop, please call the St. Patrick Faith Formation Office at 248-698-4388 or email [email protected].

Your friends at Angel Haven PRIESTLY VOCATIONS:

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY

This year, Priesthood Sunday will be on October 28, 2018! Priesthood Sunday is a special day set aside to honor the priesthood in the United States. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the central role of the priesthood in the life of the Church. It was designed to be an event led by the laity, but your parish priest can participate by talking about how he experienced and answered his own calling, the need for vocations to keep the priesthood vital, and about priests who have inspired him.

Visit our website for more information on how you can be involved in strengthening the future of our Church in the AOD and our resource page for ideas on ways to promote vocations: www.detroitpriest.com. Follow us on Facebook: Detroit Priest /Twitter: @DetroitPriest/Instagram: @detroitpriest

PRAYER AND REFLECTION

All parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit have been encouraged to form a prayer group for the purpose of supporting the Archbishop, bishops, priests, deacons and all Catholics in the metro Detroit area in prayer. We begin with a song and an opening prayer before reading and reflecting on the Gospel reading for the following Sunday. After we have shared our reflections on the Gospel, we take a few moments to be still and listen for a word from the Lord and we share what we feel the Lord is saying to us. We then lift up the intentions of the parish and the Archdiocese and any other intentions the Lord has laid on our hearts.

If you would like to join us, you would be most welcome. We meet every Wednesday in the glassed in area at the back of the church at 6:30pm until around 7:30pm.
