Dear TWIF,You’ve been harping that Ohio

State needs a ‘statement’ win to end the season in its bowl game, like beating an SEC team or USC in the Rose Bowl. I disagree.

The Buckeyes just need to win a bowl game, period, so that they can feel good about themselves head-ing into the off-season. Playing the SEC or the Trojans would just make them the butt of more jokes by the national media.

This team is too average to put on the big stage again. Let’s just stay under the radar and start anew in 2009.

As a Steeler man, I’ve obviously always despised the Browns. But the fact is, they’re legit from the stand-point of having quality players and they can beat any team in the league, as evidenced by the victory over the Giants. That was no fluke.

While they’ve given a couple games away, they’ve not been an embarrassment week-in, and week-out, like Ohio’s other pro team (and I’m not referring to Ohio State). Just something to think about.

Caution: The road to Iggy in the state finals will likely have to include a win over Pickerington Central. The Tigers are the real deal, and give Central Ohio a legitimate, albeit rare, shot of claiming a state title.

does lopita get along with Carson’s dogs?

Of course. They’re cousins. You signed with the bengals during

the off-season after playing one preseason game last year for Washington. What’s it like to play on the same team as your brother?

It’s been great so far. It’s a great oppor-tunity for us to work together and spend some quality time with each other. At the same time, I recognize that this is a business and Carson needs to spend his time working on what he needs to do to make himself and the team bet-ter while I need to worry about myself and work on improving my game.

how much do you two hang out?We spend a lot of time together, whether it is

here in Cincinnati or back in California during the

off-season. But like I said, it’s a busi-ness, and what we do away from football is one thing, and when we’re on the field it’s different because we are committed to football.

What’s something you’d like to have more time for?

My girlfriend. I’m away from her right now and we’ve been pretty serious. I’m fine with it, though, because I’ve got a job to do.

now that you’ve tasted life in the Queen City, have you found a favorite restaurant?

I’m a big Montgomery Inn fan and I also like J Alexander’s. I’m a big rib guy and both of those places have great ribs.

What’s your favorite sports movie?“Happy Gilmore.” I was big on it during high

school and I still like watching it. I’ve seen it more than any other sports movie.

Who’s your favorite athlete?Tiger (Woods). He’s the most impressive athlete

I’ve seen, ever.You big into golf?

I’m a big golfer but I’m not very good. I’ve never had a hole-in-one, but I did hit a guy. So that’s worth something. I know you’re supposed to yell, “Four!” but I was too busy saying, “There’s no way it’s going to hit that guy.”

What’s your favorite sporting event outside of football?

I like going to golf tournaments. It’s awesome walking around and watching all the pros do their thing. I’ve been to the Byron Nelson Open and the U.S. Open and it’s very different because I don’t get to go to a golf tournament very often.

What’s your favorite ballpark food?Definitely a hotdog. I’ve caught a Reds game and

I enjoy watching it live, though I’m really not into watching baseball on TV.

What’s a health food you actually enjoy?Avocados. I don’t eat them so much in Cincinnati,

but back in California I partake quite regularly.

This doesn’t happen often if you’re a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, so do it now while you can. Go ahead. You know you want to do it.

Dream.What do you have to lose? Your

faith in the Bengals? I’m guessing that’s been gone for a long time.

Dare to dream now, while you can, and it’s like playing with house money. If you get let down, it’s not a big deal. You expect to get let down. You might even, by now, enjoy being let down.

But dream now and the damned-est thing might just happen. You might just be rewarded.

The Bengals are coming off their only – sorry, their first – victory of the season, and after a bye week, they will go for their second con-secutive win Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dream about it, because there are actual, concrete reasons to think

something good could be brewing for the Bengals.

For one thing, there was that win against the Jaguars. Jacksonville’s 4-5 record obscures the fact that the Jags are a good team – boring, but good. They run the ball. They stop the run. They have a game-manag-ing quarterback who doesn’t make critical mistakes. And the Bengals beat them.

The Eagles are better than the Jaguars, but since we’re dreaming, dream about this: The return of Carson Palmer.

He has missed five games, including the last four, with sore-ness in his elbow, but he spent the bye week traveling the country – going all the way to California, in fact – for more medical opinions on his elbow. Maybe one of those opinions will come back as good news. That he can in fact return to the field this week without risking further damage.

Now look at the back-field.

Palmer, if he plays, wouldn’t be handing the ball to Chris Perry or Kenny Watson, who have averaged three yards a carry this season.

He would be handing it to Cedric Benson, the Chicago Bear castoff who has been a revelation with the Bengals. Benson rushed for 104 yards on 24 tough carries against Jacksonville, with a long run of 30.

Benson gave the Bengals their first 100-yard rushing performance this season, and given how little pounding he has taken in recent years while playing sparingly for Chicago, there ought to be plenty in his tank for more.

Now look at the receiving corps.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh remains one of the NFL’s most productive receivers with 61 catches through nine games, putting him on pace for

another 100-plus reception season. Better yet, Chad Ocho Cinco

is starting to play more like Chad Johnson. Against the Jags, Johnson had two touchdown catches and was so pleased that he gave Coach Marvin Lewis – with whom he has notoriously feuded – a kiss on the cheek.

And then there is Chris Henry, who has been back for a month and should be ready to have a break-out game, like maybe this weekend against the Eagles.

Look at it rationally. You know the Bengals could maybe be on the verge of something special. Opportunities like this don’t come along often, Bengal fan, so dream a little dream.

Just don’t blame me when you wake up and the Eagles are winning 42-3.

The Bengals won!Perhaps a snowball can survive in hell.Beating the Jaguars is not akin to David

slaying Goliath, but the Bengals would have welcomed taking on any local junior high team if it resulted in making a dent in the old win column.

And wasn’t it appropriate the schedule-makers allowed the Bengals more time to enjoy such a rare feat? But, all good things must come to an end. The bye week is over, and now the Bengals must play the Philadelphia Eagles – one of the best-run franchises in the NFL.

The Eagles have the misfortune of compet-ing in the NFC East, widely regarded as the NFL’s best division. Heading into Week 10, they managed just one victory against a winning team (Pittsburgh), but they’ve beaten every team with a losing record. That fact doesn’t bode well for the Bengals.

BENGALS OFFENSE VS.EAGLES DEFENSE

Bengals quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has certainly been no Carson Palmer, but he has managed games a bit better of late.

And the steadying influence of Cedric Benson at featured back has helped. Benson rushed for 104 yards in the victory over Jacksonville and is averaging a respectable 3.7 yards a carry.

Even Chad Johnson has shown flashes of his former self, scoring two touchdowns in the unexpected win over the Jaguars.

But defensively, the Eagles are not the Jaguars. Philly is much better as it ranks sev-enth in the NFL in points allowed per game (18.1) and fifth in yards surrendered (280.5).

Behind the talents of defensive ends Darren

Howard and Juqua Parker, Philly has racked up a whopping 27 sacks. The formidable second-ary featuring cornerbacks Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown, and safeties Brian Dawkins and Quintin Mikell, have been stellar in shutting down opposing receivers.

ADVANTAGE: Eagles

EAGLES OFFENSE VS.BENGALS DEFENSE

Remember your fantasy draft? Many of you wanted Brian Westbrook with that first pick.

It hasn’t worked out, has it?The Eagles’ featured back remains effective,

but certainly is not the horse that can carry you to a championship. A knee injury has limited his production. He has broken the 100-yard barrier just once.

Quarterback Donovan McNabb, however, has been sensational.

He’s thrown for nearly 2,200 yards and 10 touchdowns despite injuries and a lack of a true

scoring threat at wide receiver. DeSean Jackson has emerged as a force and is on pace for 1,000 receiving yards while Kevin Curtis’ return from injury gives Philly a fine receiver duo. But the pair has combined for just one touchdown in 2008.

The Bengals performed respectably against the Jaguars, but yielded at least 26 points in each of their prior four games. A season-ending injury to promising rookie linebacker Keith Rivers has taken a toll, as has a pass defense that has surrendered 13 touchdowns.

Cincinnati has played well defensively in short bursts, but never for an entire game, in large part because it can’t generate a pass rush.

And don’t look for that to change. Philly is too talented, despite its struggles on the ground, to be shut down by the Bengals. Look for the Eagles to score at least 24 points.

ADVANTAGE: Eagles

SPECIAL TEAMSThe best of this bunch on either team is

Eagles punter Sav Rocca, who is averaging 45.4 yards a boot. The opposition averages a paltry 4.3 yards a return against Rocca, much in part to his terrific hang time.

Veteran Eagle placekicker David Akers is perfect on field-goal attempts of less than 40 yards, but has missed all three tries of 50-plus.

Kick returners Quintin Depps and DeSean Jackson have been fine, but unspectacular.

The same can be said for the Cincinnati triplet of placekicker Shayne Graham, kickoff returner Glenn Holt and punt returner Antonio Chatman. But punter Kyle Larson has been par-ticularly disappointing, to say the least.

Philadelphia in offense, defense and special teams, and the Eagles are playing for at the very minimum a playoff spot, but have a divi-sion crown on their minds. The Bengals are playing for nothing more than pride.

Moreover, Cincinnati simply can’t match Philadelphia in talent on either side of the ball. It would be rather surprising to see Fitzpatrick play well against a very good Eagle pass defense that relentlessly rushes the quarterback.

The Bengals are coming off a win and they’re at home, so a blow-out might not be in the works. But don’t bet the house on a two-game win streak either.

Eagles. First off, con-grats to the Bengals

for finally winning two weeks ago against Jacksonville. But they still won’t have Carson Palmer in this one.

Bills. Brady Quinn will be the most handsome quar-terback in the stadium - unless I’m behind center for the Bills - but Buffalo is an ugly, ugly place for visitors.

Bills. The Brady Quinn era is here and so far, so

good. But the Mighty Quinn can’t beat the Bills alone. Cleveland’s defense still stinks and there’s no way Quinn and Co. can compen-sate for it on “Monday Night Football.”

Patriots. If he has to cheat to do it, Bill Belichick will find a way to beat Eric Mangini. Not that Belichick would cheat. Ever.

Jets. I’m feeling a little Brett Favre magic. It’ll

Well, Bearcat fans, what do ya know?

Just two shorts weeks fol-lowing a disastrous 40-16 loss at Connecticut, the University of Cincinnati finds itself in a three-way tie atop the Big East standings!

The climb to the peak of the Big East mountain, along with a No. 22 national ranking, concluded a wild weekend which witnessed a thrilling 26-23 overtime win over West Virginia.

It was UC’s second win ever in 17 tries against the Mountaineers, and its first since UC joined the Big East in 2005.

And for sure, the news gets ever better: If the Bearcats win their three remaining league games, they’ll be Big East champs. Win out and UC is headed to its first BCS bowl game ever!

“Everybody is on cloud nine,” Bearcat receiver Mardy Gilyard said fol-lowing the win over WVU. “It feels like we won the Big East championship.”

Sorry to rain on your parade, Mardy, but there are three very crucial games to win before you’re league champs.

An epic showdown with Pittsburgh awaits Nippert Stadium in two weeks. And, Syracuse comes to town the following week looking to play spoiler. That is, only if, UC can win its two preceding games.

Up next for the Bearcats is a 105-mile trek south to Louisville for that little ole’ game known as “The Battle for the Keg of Nails.” This year for the Bearcats, it’s better know as Big East drive to the title, Round 1!

BEARCATS OFFENSE VS.

CARDINALS DEFENSEThe inspiration for the title of

this rivalry came about because to win this game, the winner had to be “tough as nails.”

And going in, there is one player who is already “tough as nails.”

Bearcat quarterback Tony Pike has been playing with a broken left (non-throwing) arm. Kelly said Pike will start again this week even though incumbent starter Dustin Grutza appears ready to go.

And for good reason. Pike has led UC to its current position atop the Big East as his overtime touch-down pass to Kazeem Ali beat

the Mountaineers. Pike averages a respectable 175 passing yards and has thrown 10 TD passes to just three interceptions. And against WVU, Pike was effi-cient, passing for 178 yards and a TD.

What is even more encouraging is Jacob Ramsey.

He averaged 4.6 yards a carry (83 yards on 18 carries) against a very quick Mountaineer defense.

The Louisville ‘D,’ meanwhile, is a treadmill for opposing offenses. Opponents have run all over the Cardinals, averaging 178 rushing yards a game. Yet somehow the Cards held Pitt running back LeSean McCoy to a career-low 39 rushing yards last week.

Then again, the Cardinals allowed Pitt to score 41 points, so expect Ramsey and the UC offense to have a big day.

Advantage: Cincinnati

CARDINALS OFFENSE VS.

BEARCATS DEFENSEWhile UC, as Gilyard put it,

is “riding cloud nine,” Louisville, and its offense, is free falling with-out a parachute.

The Cards were thoroughly taken to the woodshed by the Pitt Panthers last week in a 41-7 loss. Louisville turned the ball over five times and the Cards’ senior leader, quarterback Hunter Cantwell, was momentarily pulled in favor of redshirt freshman Matt Simms.

Though Cantwell wasn’t at his best last week, he’s still been solid much of the season.

He averages 197 passing yards a game and has tossed 13 TD passes, but has also been picked off 11 times.

Without question, Cantwell can hurt you through the air. But more important-ly, Terrill Byrd and the UC defense should be well aware of redshirt freshman Victor Anderson.

He averages 101 rushing yards a game, six yards a carry and has scored seven TDs. At 5-9, 182 pounds, Anderson isn’t the most punishing runner UC will ever face, but he’s nifty between the tackles and quite the home-run threat.

However, UC did hold WVU to less than 100 yards rushing last week – the first time WVU didn’t gain at least 100 rushing yards in a game since 2001.


SPECIAL TEAMSHe’s back!Mr. Gilyard has returned. His elec-

trifying 100-yard kickoff return to kick things off in Morgantown set the tempo for the Bearcat ‘W.’

Louisville Coach Steve Kragthorpe would be wise in electing to kick away from Gilyard.

On the flip side, Louisville boasts one heck of a return man themselves in Trent Guy. He averages 25 yards a kickoff return, including a 95-TD.

Bearcat placekicker Jake Rogers is making a strong case for the all Big East team even though he missed a 29-yarder last week. He has connected on 11 of 12 attempts this year and, for the most part, has been money when needed.


INTANGIBLESKelly has UC poised for its first Big

East title in school history. Win out and mission accomplished.

Kragthorpe, in his second season at the helm for Louisville, is seeking his first bowl berth with the Cardinals. So a lot is up for grabs, but at this moment UC is hungrier.

Or, as Kelly said about the WVU win, “This game means nothing if you go down to Louisville and muck it around.”


THE WAY FASTEDDIE SEES ITLouisville is not as bad as the team that got

walloped by Pitt last week. And, UC might not be as good as the team that led WVU 20-7.

Might the Bearcat team that coughed up that 13-point lead in the waning minutes be the real ‘Cats? Possibly, but UC did come back to polish off the ‘Eers.

And with that said, UC has some serious momentum on its side. This will be a tight game and the Louisville crowd will be a factor.

But, Kelly will have the troops focused. As a result, UC’s freshmen better be prepared to drag that old’ bag of nails back to the Queen City.

Penn State’s loss to Iowa last week validates my long-time assertion that Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel’s persistent big-game strategy of play-ing not to lose fails in the long run. And I fear it will start to sabotage his program.

The play-it-close-to-the-Tressel-vest plan worked in 2002, especially in the national cham-pionship against Miami (FL). It hasn’t since.

Note: In the 2006 win at Texas, in a rare exception to the Vest rule, he opened things up offensively from the opening possession. Result: Game over at halftime. Great win.

It’s been the complete opposite since. Florida, LSU, USC and now Penn State.

Iowa is not a good football team. The Hawkeyes don’t possess one-tenth the talent Ohio State has, yet they managed to score 24 points against the league’s best defense in pull-ing off the upset.

The Buckeyes managed a pair of field goals against the Nittany Lions. Had Tress let quar-terback Terrelle Pryor loose, as he did against Northwestern in the second half last week, OSU would be unbeaten in the Big Ten today.

Let’s hope Tress allows the attacking style offense to carry over into the first half against

Illinois this week. The Illini have struggled this season, but they still score a lot of points and have a quarterback, Juice Williams, who can take over a game (as we saw last year in Columbus).

You may be questioning why I’m harping on this issue given that the Buckeye offense threw caution to the wind in the final 30 minutes at Northwestern. Perhaps those ultra-conservative days are a thing of the past, you suggest.

I doubt it. What transpired against the Wildcats was more accident than strategy. The fake punt was called because of a strong wind, and the TD run on the game’s final play actually caused Tressel to grimace, as a national televi-sion audience witnessed. He did not want his

team to score.Tress is not ‘built’ to go

for any team’s jugular vein, and he doesn’t believe in style points. But that needs to change, else recruiting, especially the skilled positions, is going to suffer.

Consider: Would you want your son playing for this Buckeye offense? OK, I would, but only because I’m an Ohio native and diehard fan to the nth degree. But the folks down South, on the East Coast and out West aren’t like me. To them, Sloopy is a Disney character.

For Ohio State to remain a national power, it must find its wideouts, and often times its quarterbacks, outside the state borders. And I’m starting to wonder if it’s the same for line-men, though for now I’ll still opt to throw the coaching staff under the bus for the consistently anemic performance in the trenches.

The majority of Buckeye fans will agree that most of Tressel’s OSU offenses, especially the 2008 version, have been somewhat painful to watch. Now if we feel that way, what do you sup-pose the nation’s top prospects are thinking?

Last week we warned Ohio State against taking a Cat nap. Northwestern made us nervous. Fortunately, the Bucks took care of business.

This week we’ve got the jit-ters even worse. Illinois has the Juice and we know what that means. The Buckeye defense had better buckle down and play assignment football like they’ve never played before.

Though Illinois’ upset over then-No. 1 Ohio State last November didn’t ultimately cost the Buckeyes a shot at the national championship, at the time it was one of the most painful losses ever to witness.

Not just because Ohio State lost, but how it lost. Led by quarterback Juice Williams, the Illini just slammed the ball down the Buckeyes’ collective throat, draining the final eight min-utes off the clock to preserve a 28-21 win in the Horseshoe.

The Buckeye defense, as well as OSU fans nationwide, just seemed to watch helplessly as Williams ran on draws, sneaks and improvi-sational scrambles to convert one third down

after another.Well, Williams is back and

this time the Illini are hoping to be rude hosts as they try to salvage what has been a vastly disappointing season. Because of losing to Western Michigan in Detroit last week, the Illini still need one win to become bowl eligible, and that alone should provide motivation for them to pull off another upset of the Buckeyes.

More than anything, though, we’re simply worried about the Juice.

This ain’t no gimme, folks.

BREAKIN’ IT DOWNOSU OFFENSE VS. ILLINOIS DEFENSE

We’re more confused than ever, but more hopeful than ever as well.

Someone flip-flopped OSU Coach Jim Tressel’s ‘play’ card last week, as the stuff that was supposed to be run in the first half, like the deep passes and fake punt, were done in the second half, while the steady diet of first and

second down dives were executed (actually they failed miserably as usual) in the first half.

Hopefully, Tress and his staff have that mess all sorted out. Yes, we’re kidding.

For sure, if the big boss lets quarterback Terrelle Pryor air it out like he did in the second half in Evanston, this game may not be as close as advertised.

As for running back Beanie Wells, it appears he’ll have to keep getting his yards on his own, as the line continues to falter.

Good news: The Illini defense is shaky, giving up 26 points and 350 yards a game. There’s no reason the Buckeyes shouldn’t be able to manufacture three TDs and a couple field goals.

Advantage: Even

ILLINOIS OFFENSE VS. OSU DEFENSE

On one hand, it’s worth noting that Williams has not been as effective running this season due to the loss of running back Rashard Mendenhall to the NFL. Without question, that duo was as dynamic and dangerous as can be; everything Buckeye Nation hopes Pryor and Wells will become.

man show when he wants, as he single-hand-edly beat Michigan in Ann Arbor early this season, accounting for more than 400 yards of offense.

Surprisingly, Illinois leads the Big Ten in passing (272 yards per game) and has the sec-ond-best offense overall, averaging 33 points and 450 yards a game. Williams has 20 TD passes.

Veteran Arrelious Benn is once again the main target with 60 receptions for 947 yards (15.8 avg.) and three scores.

The Illini’s problem has been that they’ve gotten lulled to sleep against lesser competi-tion. That won’t be the case this week.

Advantage: Illinois

SPECIAL TEAMSIllinois’ return teams are OK, as Benn

returns both punts and kicks, averaging 10.1 and 21.6 yards respectively. A.J. Jenkins has the team’s only return for a score, covering 96 yards.

The Illini kicking game is so-so as well. Matt Eller has made only 12 of 17 field goals, though one was from 51 yards. He has missed three from within 40, though.

Punter Anthony Santella averages a suspect 39.6 yards, but seven boots have been longer than 50 and 10 have been downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Buckeye booters – punter A.J. Trapasso and kicker Ryan Pretorious – are better.

The return teams are a wash.Advantage: Ohio State

INTANGIBLESThe Buckeyes have the revenge factor, the

goal of winning a fourth straight Big Ten cham-pionship and earning another BCS bowl bid. You’d think that would inspire.

game one bit. The Juice scares the bejesus out of us; it’s that simple. Still, we expect the Buckeyes to pull this one out in dramatic fashion. It might even take overtime.

Remember your mother telling you to drink your juice for breakfast? Well, Illinois juices it up for the Buckeyes with the offensive exploits of QB Juice Williams, but still fall short as OSU forces him into a costly mistake late in the game. OSU 23-20.

You have to believe the Buckeye defense has been chomping at the bit to squeeze the Juice out of Illinois. James Laurinaitis, Malcolm Jenkins and crew will carry the day. OSU 23-13.

Juice Williams was nearly perfect last year in Illinois’ upset in Ohio Stadium. So the Buckeye defense must put the heat on him and force him to make mistakes. If that happens, and Beanie keeps running wild, Buckeyes win. OSU 24-17.

OPiNiON There’s often a fine line between a winning and losing record, and these teams serve proof. Amaz-ingly, one of them may very well win the ACC and play in a BCS bowl.

North Carolina has come from be-hind in all but one of its wins this season, while Maryland is 3-0 in games decided by seven points or less and has won two of their three ACC games with fourth-quarter game-winning field goals.

Atlantic Division Coastal Division(#16) North Carolina at MarylandKicking Up Their Heels

The ACC is a train wreck. What you have here is about eight teams who are decent, all of which are probably good enough to finish seventh in the Big 12 or SEC, if you’re seeking a relative comparison. So when we say the best two in the ACC may be squaring off this week, don’t get too excited. Still, this will be a good, solid game to watch. After going win-less on the road last season, the Heels have already won twice away from home this season. Because of its defense, make it three.

PREDICTION: North Carolina 24-20 Legendary Insight“North Carolina’s been getting a lot of attention, while Maryland seems to be under everyone’s radar. Neither team is flashy, but I think the Tar Heels will pull it out because of their opportunistic defense.” – George Welsh

OPiNiON We don’t profess to be city planners or anything, but isn’t the proposed expan-sion just cutting it a little close to existing needs? If the program ever becomes a national title contender, you’d expect more fans to come out of the wood-work, wouldn’t you?

Rutgers at South FloridaScarlet Knight Fever Returns

Two teams heading in opposite directions. After a brutal start, Rutgers has won three straight and very well could salvage its season with a bowl trip. USF, after another great start for the second straight season, is staggering again, losers of three of four. Rutgers started USF’s 2007 slide with an upset win over the then-No. 2 Bulls in Piscataway, and we’re inclined to think the Scarlet Knights will continue USF’s slide this week because of the recent play of senior quarterback Mike Teel and the Rutgers defense. USF has the revenge factor on its side, though. Hmmm. We’ll go with the hotter team.

PREDICTION: Rutgers 31-23

OPiNiON Coach Jim Harbaugh (for-mer Michigan quarterback) has done a terrific job at Stanford, and might have gotten the U of M job last winter had he not bashed his alma mater for its lax academic policies. Thanks Jim; we’re thrilled with three-win RichRod!


This year marks the first time Stanford has opened 4-0 at home since 1977, when Bill Walsh’s first Stanford team posted a 6-0 home record. That guy went on and did a pretty good job as an NFL coach, we recall.

mental upset over USC a second straight year. That blue moon has come and gone. It doesn’t matter that Stanford is unbeaten at home this year. And yes, we know Stanford beat Oregon State, which in turn beat USC. Sorry, but the transitive theory (we knew freshman geometry would pay off somewhere down the road!) doesn’t work here. And we realize that Coach Jim Harbaugh’s Cardinal are a legitimate team this year, a mere win from bowl eligibility. But this is going to be a rout because USC hasn’t forgotten last season.

The Tigers (6-3, 4-2) still have second-place hopes alive in the North Coast Athletic Conference as they head to Amish country to battle the Wooster Fighting Scots.

Wooster (7-2, 5-1) currently resides in second place and has won two straight including a 27-7 win at Oberlin last week.

Dustin Sheppard rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns for the Scots, but it won’t be as easy this week. Wittenberg allows a league-best 11.8 points a game.

Ohio Dominican Panthers at Malone College PioneersA Historic Week For Reisert

The nationally ranked Ohio Dominican Panthers (6-3, 3-2) are coming off a 56-0 throttling of Urbana, but even more remarkably, Panther quar-terback Chris Reisert made history.

The senior from Cincinnati not only finished the game 21 of 26 pass-ing for 381 yards and four touchdown strikes, but he also broke the career NAIA record for passing yards and TD passes. He now has 13,174 career passing yards and 117 career TD tosses.

Up next for the Panthers are the Malone College Pioneers (6-2, 4-1), who lost their first Mid-States Football Association Mideast League game last week to St. Francis (Ind.), 45-24.

So the Pioneers will be piping mad, but ODU is rolling along, winners of three straight. Make it four.

Surprise, surprise. Colerain has made the final eight of the Division-I playoffs.

The perennial state power knocked off Wayne last week, 23-0, as a triumvirate of Cardinal backs shouldered the work load.

Greg Tabar finished with 146 rushing yards. Fullback Trayion Williams added 124. And Tyler Williams chipped in with three touchdown runs.

While Colerain was running wild, Elder beat pesky Clayton Northmont, 13-10. Placekicker Tony Miliano nailed a 31-yard field goal with two minutes remaining to seal the victory.

The Panthers, who are ranked No. 19 in the nation by USA Today, boast a strong offense led by quarterback Mark Miller.

Miller was 14 of 15 passing for 180 yards against Northmont, and running back Adam Brown rushed for 109 yards. More of the same from Miller and Brown will be needed against powerful Colerain.

Prediction: Elder 17, Colerain 16

DIVISION ISt. Ignatius (11-1) vs.

Strongsville (11-1)Remember former Cleveland Browns quarter-

back Mike Pagel? That’s his dad.We’re talking about Strongsville quarterback

Kellen Pagel. And he sure made pop proud last week by leading the Mustangs to a 17-3 win over mighty Mentor.

Pagel completed 16 of 28 passes for 209 yards and connected with wideout Alex Kovach eight times for 114 yards.

The Mustangs’ reward? A date with St. Ignatius, which is arguably the team to beat in Division I after handing Glenville an 8-7 loss, avenging a Week 1 defeat to the Tarblooders.

So we’re in for a treat as Wildcat quarterback Andrew Holland is one of the state’s best. He’ll be matching pass for pass with Strongsville’s Pagel in which should be a thriller.

Prediction: St. Ignatius 13, Strongsville 10

DIVISION IIWinton Woods (11-1) vs.

Anderson (10-2)Winton Woods has certainly won its first two

playoff games with style.The Warriors opened the postseason with a

58-12 thumping of Dayton Dunbar, and then fol-lowed that with a 44-9 defeat of Kings last week.

Winton Woods is led by quarterback Dominque Brown, who has rushed for 1,407 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Warriors also feature running back Jeremiah Goins, who has rushed for more than 1,000 yards and 28 TDs.

Anderson’s Kyle Slater, meanwhile, has sur-passed 1,300 rushing yards and 20 TDs.

Last week, Anderson knocked off previously unbeaten Tecumseh, 31-13. They scored three sec-ond-half TDs to get the job done. Beating a hot Winton Woods will require a similar effort.

Just the way it should be!It’s the No. 1 seed St. Francis

DeSales vs. the No. 2 seed Louisville. Their paths have proved quite simi-

lar. Both were forced to muscle their way to hard-fought victories last week as DeSales overcame Marion-Franklin, 31-23, and Louisville blanked Logan, 7-0.

DeSales fans were starting to think basketball season when the Stallions fell behind early.

But DeSales scored two touchdowns in a 15-second span of a 28-point second quarter to take control.

Louisville, meanwhile, needed no such offensive heroics. The Leopard defense blanked a Logan team that entered averaging 34.3 points.

Behind such defensive stalwarts as Corey Whaley, Bryan Kuhn, Joe Poyser and Colin Davis, Louisville has held seven of its 12 opponents to seven points or less.Prediction: St. Francis DeSales 17, Louisville 12

DIVISION IIIDover (11-1) vs. Licking Valley (11-1)

Can the Tornadoes turn Storm into a drizzle?

The Tornadoes in question play football for Dover. Storm is Licking Valley running back and soon-to-be Ohio State Buckeye Storm Klein.

Klein rushed for 188 yards in a 41-7 pounding of Poland Seminary last week. Supplementing Klein’s usual domi-nance was Drew Ryan, who added 110 rushing yards.

Dover set up this showdown with a 35-14 revenge win over Canton South, who’s responsible for Dover’s lone loss.

After throwing three first-half interceptions, senior quarterback Corey Lisowski atoned for his sins by rushing for two touchdowns and passed for another during the second half in leading the Tornadoes to victory.

Such mistakes, however, will be severely punishing when facing a team like Klein’s Wildcats.Prediction: Licking Valley 28, Dover 20

DIVISION IVSteubenville (12-0) vs. Perry (11-1)

The Big Red was a big pain in the rear last week for the big bullies of Division IV, Cardinal Mooney, as Steubenville dashed to an impressive 28-16 win over the Cardinals.

And the Big Red achieved it through the talents of quarterback Dwight Macon and senior fullback Branko Busick. Each racked up more than 100 rushing yards and combined for three touchdowns against tradi-tional D-IV powerhouse Mooney.

So Perry will certainly have its hands full this week. But, the Pirates have plenty of their own momentum following a 47-0 thumping of Tuslaw last week.

In the victory, senior running back Mike Hanhauser rushed for 168 yards and five TDs, while senior quarterback Vinny Hokevar added 108 yards on the ground.Prediction: Steubenville 27, Perry 7

a famous historical figure i wish i could meet is… Jerry Rice. He worked very hard for all of his accomplish-ments and I want to meet someone who has that much passion and devo-tion to football.

if i wasn’t playing football, i would be… a completely different person. Football has made me who I am.

between college and nFl football, i prefer… the NFL. The athletes are the best of the best.

My favorite pre-game meal is… a lunch meat sandwich with a pickle and some potato chips.

My favorite smell is… a summer morning right before football practice.

The most underrated player on our football team is… offensive line-man Kyle Gephart. Everyone knows he’s a good player, but he’s even better than what people think because of his toughness. In a game last year he hurt his hand. He was still our best blocker that game despite blocking with only one hand!

My least favorite exercise is… agilities, which we start off with every practice. I’m impatient and I want to get straight to weight lifting and play-ing football.

The scariest part of life after high school is… being on my own in the real world.

My most difficult school subject is… chemistry.

My favorite hobby is… playing the drums.

My favorite TV show is… “The Simpsons.”

The worst movie i’ve ever watched is… “Juno.” It was horrible. I don’t know why everybody liked it.

My dream vacation is… traveling to Europe with my friends and experi-encing the different cultures.

When i’m sad, i usually… ignore whatever is bothering me and do things to distract my mind.
