Ask any current Fairmont State Univer-sity football player who Tom Brady is and you’ll likely get a correct answer from each and every one of them.

They know Brady is the quarterback of the National Football League’s New England Patriots who has led his team to five Super Bowl appearances and three victories in the big game.

Ask them who his guard/center was in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001 when the Pa-triots won their first league champion-ship on Adam Vinatieri’s 48-yard field goal on the game’s final play and you’ll likely stump them all.

Well, maybe not now, but when 12-year NFL veteran and two-time Super Bowl champion Mike Compton first arrived on Fairmont State University’s campus as an assistant football coach in January of 2013 not many people realized who he was or what he had accomplished in his life. Not even the o!ensive linemen he was preparing to coach.

Compton’s transition from player to coach has been a smooth one and he did it in a fashion which is to be respect-ed. After completing his 12th and final season in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2004 Compton retired from playing and in 2006 took an assistant coaching position at Tazewell High School in Tazewell, Va. After two years there he became the head coach at Pat-rick Henry High School in Emory, Va. un-til 2011 when he entered the collegiate ranks as the o!ensive line coach at NAIA Bluefield (Va.) College. Then in January of 2013 he accepted his current position at Fairmont State.

Compton came from humble beginnings. He was born in Richlands, Va. and raised in a double-wide trailer in McGuire Valley, Va. He went on to star at Richlands High School in baseball, wrestling and football where he attracted the attention of Division I coaches. He signed with WVU in 1988, redshirted and played for the Mountaineers from 1989-92 starting his final three seasons at center. His senior season he was a consensus All-Amer-ican selection and a first-team Academic All-American.

You’re going to get knocked down at times, but you’ve got to be willing to get back up

In the spring of 1993 Compton was selected in the third round of the NFL draft as the 68th overall pick by the Detroit Lions. He played eight seasons with the Lions, who made five playo! appearances during that span and he helped pave the way for NFL Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders.

In 2001 Compton signed with New England where he started at guard and also played center when the Patriots went to the shot-gun. In the second game of the 2001 season starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe endured a hard hit from New York Jets linebacker Mo Lewis which sidelined him for several weeks and opened the door for Brady who helped lead the Patriots to a division title and their first Super Bowl win – a 20-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams. Over the course of the last two-plus years there’s been very few o!ensive plays run by Fairmont State’s football team that didn’t start with the ball in Garon Belser’s hands.

Yet it’s likely that most Falcon fans have no idea who Belser is. That’s fine. Belser, you see, takes it all in stride. He’s very familiar with the term anonymity and has been for quite some time. He un-derstands his role on the team and does it week in and week out to near perfec-tion.
