2Green Chemistry – US EPA Definitions
Green chemistry, also known as sustainable chemistry, is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances.
Green chemistry applies across the life cycle of a chemical product, including its design, manufacture, and use.
Green chemistry is a highly effective approach to pollution prevention because it applies innovative scientific solutions to real-world environmental situations.

3Sustainable Chemistry Hierarchy
Products and processes should be designed to the highest level of this hierarchy and be cost-competitive in the market.
Design products to be less hazardous to human health and the environment
Use feedstocks and reagents that are less hazardous to human health and the environment
Design syntheses and other processes to be less energy and materials intensive
Use feedstocks derived from renewable resources or from abundant waste
Reuse or Recycle Chemicals
Treat Chemicals to Render Them Less Hazardous

4Non-Natural-Natural Ingredients
Vitamin C – Most ingredient supply is synthetic
Other vitamins – synthesis and fermentation
Amino Acids – most are produced by fermentation or synthesis
Caffeine - synthesis
Carotenoids - synthesis
Resveratrol – synthesis
Co-enzyme Q10 - fermentation

5Misconceptions about “Natural”
Just because an ingredient is natural does not mean that it is more green or sustainable than a synthetic version of the same ingredient
Ingredients that are manufactured starting with botanicals, fruits, vegetables, etc…are processed using solvents and chemicals
In many cases synthetic or fermentation processes are more clean, green and sustainable compared to extraction from natural material.
Some extraction processes generate incredible amounts of solvent or chemical waste

6Some Other Issues with Natural
Just because there is supply today does not mean that there will be sustainable supply with increased demand
Wildcrafting – illegal wildcrafting for high value botanicals
Use of endangered plants – sometimes not a problem when demand is low, but not sustainable if demand increases.

7Natural Identical Synthesis
Some natural compounds can be made synthetically so that the are identical to the natural compound
Nature identical compounds are so close that they are chemically indistinguishable from a compound isolated from the plant.
Natural identical compounds tend to be more cost effective, clean green and natural
Vitamin C is the best example

8Vitamin C Example
Most vitamin C included in products is synthetic
Biomass for natural extraction is abundant, however it not an efficient way to manufacturer commercial quantities of the ingredient
Natural Vitamin C is 5 to 10X more expensive than synthetic Nature identical Vitamin C
Acerola extract standardized to Vitamin C is a good example

9Summary
The most sustainable and green production methods do not always start with nature
Nature identical ingredients are often needed to provide sustainable and economic solutions
Synthetic does not equal bad
There are many examples of natural identical ingredients in the market
THE BOTTOM LINE:
You need to do an appropriate amount of due diligence on the ingredients used in your products
