Killin Community Council InformationA meeting of Killin Community Council on 12October was attended by Peter Hutchison(Scottish Natural Heritage), Colin White,Steven Cooper & Ian Fraser (Stirling CouncilRepresentatives), Suzanne Player (CommunityAnimateur), Linda FitzGerald {Killin News),ten members of the public and five KillinCommunity Councillors.

Peter Hutchison had just happened to bepassing through Killin, and popped in to givea brief up date on the National Park. Heexplained that SNH are acting as advisors tothe Scottish Parliament. The Park boundarieswill be decided by the Scottish Parliament bynext summer and the Park will be operationalby April 2001. Legislation will be developedand in place by November 1999.

Allan Walker asked if Killin were to beincluded within the Park boundaries would thewest end of Loch Tay be incorporated also?Linda FitzGerald asked if boundaries areofficially set with which the people of Killindo not agree, will there be any route availablefor an appeal to have them changed? PeterHutchison replied to both of these questionsthat he didn't know, but these were importantcomments to the boundary discussions whichwill be taking place.

John MacPherson suggested that thecommunity of Killin should host a publicmeeting and invite representatives of otherareas, who, like Killin, are situated on theperiphery of the suggested Park boundaries,i.e. Crianlarich, Tyndrum, Lochearnhead andCallander. This Public Meeting will take placein early December 1999 to allow time for thevillages to make representation to the ScottishParliament on whether they want to beincluded or excluded from the Park, prior toboundaries being officially agreed. PeterHutchison assured Killin that SNH would bedelighted to attend this meeting.

LollipopIt was suggested that the Killin PrimarySchool should launch a petition to highlightthe problems faced by the children in crossingthe busy Main Street to get to school. It wasalso suggested that parents should write lettersto Stirling Council to urge them to appoint aLollipop Person before a child is knockeddown, or worse, on this road.

Who decided that the new housing at the OldMart should be called Craiglyon Mews? Itwas strongly felt that the name "The OldMart" should be retained as a reminder of animportant part of village history. TheCommunity Council will pursue this withStirling Council Planning Department.

Ian Fraser, Colin White and Steven Cooper(SC) unveiled drawings of the proposed newcar park on the scrub land on the left as youapproach the Council Yard (just across fromStitt Bros.) This new car park will have 4coach parking spaces and coach turning area,13 car spaces, 2 disabled car parking spaces, landscaping with shrubs - but NO publictoilets. They explained that public toilets sitedat the car park or in Breadalbane Park wouldcost in the region of £90,000 and that theamount of money they have available fortoilets was only between £15 - £20,000. Theypropose to approach the McLaren HallTrustees to ascertain if it would be possible tohave an extension built on to the hall whichcould be used for this purpose.

This plan also detailed the proposed relocationof A&B Services. The area of ground from theboundary of Stitt Bros Yard back to theboundary fence of Stirling Council RoadsDepartment (at the moment car parking andtoilets) will become the property of A&BServices. It was pointed out that this wouldrestrict access onto the old railway line.Stirling Council's representatives indicatedthat the existing access at the Sewage Workswould still allow access but perhaps ifvillagers felt strongly enough, a lane might becreated between Stitt's and A&B Servicesproperties.

The Stirling Council Representatives wereasked what would become of A&B's presentpremises if the move goes ahead. Theyanswered that as it is private land, it would beup to the owners what they chose to do with it.Currently the area is zoned for industrial useand could continue to be used for this purpose. They suggested that if planning was sought forchange of use to accommodate housing, itwould most likely be viewed favourably.Suzanne Player mentioned that the Health andSocial Care survey, which is taking place inthe village at present, had highlighted a needfor a community resource building. Suzannehad received suggestions from interestedvillagers that perhaps the land could be usedfor this.

The three representatives of Stirling Councilasked the Community Council to give itsbacking to these two proposals as a singleventure - ie the new Car Park was not a viableproject without relocation of A&B, and viceversa. They insisted that contracts had to besigned by the end of December (the financialyear) to ensure financial assistance from theEuropean Commission. It was agreed toaccept the plans without assurances of publictoilets, this issue could be pursued separately

A detailed drawing of the proposed carpark and workshop has been kindlygiven to the Killin News by Colin Whyte(SC), courtesy of Alan HarrisonAssociates, Chartered Architects. It isimportant, should you wish toconstructively comment on this plan(illustrated on the facing page), that youattend the meetings of YOURCommunity Council on the secondTuesday of every second month. Thenext one being on 14 December 1999.

We might not be able to"Skip to the Loo" ! -

howeverAfter what seems like years of pushing to havea community skip for unwanted items ofhousehold rubbish, Killin's patience has atlast been rewarded. Steven Cooper (SC)delighted the village by announcing that alarge civic community skip will be placed inthe Stirling Council Roads Department yard, approximately once a month. It will besupervised by a council employee andtherefore will only be accessible duringnormal working hours. He stressed that KillinCommunity Council must bear someresponsibility for items being disposed of inthis skip, and the first time its use is abused, the licence will be revoked and it will beremoved - never to return again. So people ofKillin - it's down to you to ensure that onlyitems from houses are disposed of in it - NOcommercial waste - NO trade waste -definitely NO car batteries. If you witness anymisuse - please report it immediately to yourCommunity Council or the local police.

The issue of parking in the Main Street wasraised and difficulties encountered whenattempting to access Main Street from thedriveways of residences. Line of sight isseverely restricted even though cars are parkedin officially designated spaces. Colin McRaesaid that parking is actually restricted to 20minutes in these spaces. The CommunityCouncil will inform the local police that thisrestriction needs to be enforced.

Road RepairsPat Christie said that the Auchlyne Road hadbeen repaired. The repair would appear not tobe up to standard as the new barriers havealready collapsed into the Ri\cr Dochart. JohnMacPherson mentioned that he had received acomplaint about a one mile stretch of roadwhich was falling into the river at Glenlochay. The Community Council will write to StirlingCouncil to highlight these problems.

With the onset of the darker nights, we do not wish to deter the youths from using theirpedal cycles, however, we would like to ensure their safety by having lights fitted tocycles and using them. In addition, some of the older youth cyclists still persist inriding their bikes on the footpaths and sometimes at great speed. Would parents pleasead\ise children on bicycle road safety.

Lost dogs are becoming a regular event in the village and as we have no facility to keepany that are found, it would be most helpful if owners would notify the police as soonas they discover that their dog is missing. This will save the animal being transportedto the dog pound at Throsk and also save the owners a trip to reclaim the dog and paythe necessary fees - £2 per day and £23 for processing.

With Christmas and Millennium Festivities getting ever closer, can we remind ownersof premises, commercial and domestic, to ensure that if they are going to be away overthis period that they notify the police of any changes to keyholders. This will ensurethat if the Millennium Bug does exist andalarms or other problems arise, then wecan deal with them with the leastinconvenience to others.

A final message regarding security overthe Festive Season. Please ensure you lockall outbuildings and store all garden toolssecurely. If you are going to be away fromhome try and set timer switches on lightsor arrange with a friend/neighbour toswitch on lights, close and open curtains, also cancel any deliveries of papers. Youcan even have any mail retained at the PostOffice until you return just by notifyingthem.

Mervyn'sWeather

Without fuss or frost, the leavesare quietly assuming their autumn

hues. As early as the beginning of August, when a dry, though markedly cool, spell occurred, some trees, mainly birch, beech, and some species of saugh orwillow began prematurely to show fading of their greenery. Then, during therains and humidity of September this procedure appeared to go on hold, andonly now, in mid October, is normality returning. Of recent years, the lack ofearly frosts has produced a situation whereby some trees seem to shed theirleaves almost without the normal colour change. Probably this wasaccentuated by rain and gales thereby making the period of maximum"splendour of autumn" comparatively short.

The cause of the recent run of mild autumns and winters has been alleged tobe global warming, and while this phenomenon is obviously fact, it is difficultto assess whether indeed it is presently having a noticeable effect on ourclimate. In the past there have been epochs of various extremes of climate, hotsummers, cold winters, even "mini ice ages", lasting for sufficiently lengthyperiods to affect plant, animal and insect life, so that one cannot yetcategorically assume that our present regime is due to any specific cause orcauses. It seems somewhat ironic that our springs still seem to show theirnormal reluctance to "put their cards on the table" so to speak, and arefrustratingly reluctant to progress steadily forward! Unlike "a week inpolitics", weather seems to require many years to establish a pattern!

Killin InitiativeAnnual General Meeting

It may be useful to start with to remindreaders that the Killin InitiativeCommittee took over from the earlierTraders' Association, some four yearsago. Its main function as described in itsconstitution is "to organise events, promote and assist projects which willprovide benefit and attraction to thevillage of Killin and to educate the publicin the culture and heritage of the area".Since the Committee now has an InternetWeb Site, the address of which is,www.geocities.com/Heartland/Trail/1813/ - to "bring Killin to the people and thepeople to Killin", it clearly functions toimprove the economy and attraction ofthe area.

Alex Stewart chaired the AGM at whichabout six members of the public werepresent. In his report he pointed out thatwhile The Games had two bad years, the1999 event was much more successful, and alongside the Music Festival'ssuccessful year, made it possible tocontribute some £2,000 to localenterprises and activities. It might also benoted that over the four years of itsexistence it has ploughed some £6,000back into the Community - quite anachievement.

There followed a report from theHighland Games convenor, Charlie Grantwho underlined the considerable successthis year of the Games. Partly due tointernet publicity, but also the remarkablygood weather!

The report on the Music Festival similarlyspoke of a highly successful event withartists of outstanding quality andreputation. We note that BrewerySponsorship continues to be muchappreciated and it looks as if it willcontinue.

The next item for discussion was thepresentation to the meeting of a revisedConstitution which was unanimouslyapproved.

Finally, elections were held for officebearers and Committee members for thecoming year. These were: Chairman- AStewart, Vice Chairman - C Grant,Secretary - T Bolton. Treasurer - DFettes, Committee Members - JMallinson, D McRobbie, J Reilly, TGrant, D Syme, J Shuttleworth, F Stewart,A Aitken.

As I write this, Autumn has definitelyarrived. The leaves are flooding from thetrees although there hasn't really been a frost. The stag season is reaching an end, and as forthousands of Autumns past the glens areechoing to the roars of stags in rut. Theyhope that the roar will scare away other stagsfrom their harem of hinds (females) butsometimes this does not happen and theycome to blows locking their antlers in battle. The other day I spent an interesting half hourwatching two evenly matched stags fighting. One sustained a wound on the face from thehorns of his adversary. Eventually, theyappeared to come to some sort of decision;only to find that, whilst they had been busy, several young stags had nicked off with thehinds and none were left for the victor. Theypaced side by side for a further quarter of anhour before going their own ways, probablythinking about their females and saying "I'llnever understand women!".

When gralloching deer (taking out stomachetc) on the hill, new health and safetyregulations demand the use of surgicalgloves. It's a bit of a hassle, but the glovesare useful afterwards to put over the end of ahorn to mark the position of the stag for theghillie to bring up the hill vehicle - theyshine nice and white on the horizon. I'llleave to your imagination what one guestthought they were like.

While spying for deer you can often hear theskeins of greylag and pinkfeet geese flyingover from their Arctic breeding grounds toScottish estuaries or to England.

It is the time of year for other migrants too,and this year 1 have seen more fieldfares thanever before. They usually visit us for a fewdays on their way from Scandinavia, to fillup with berries and bugs, but this year theyhave been here for two weeks. They havebeen busy on all parts of the hill in flocks of20 to 200 digging out grubs. Maybe it's themild weather or maybe it's the newparliament which has made Scotland moreattractive. They are providing an extra mealor two for peregrines. He plucks his kill andso leaves a kind of trademark.

Another autumn activity I saw while spyingwas a red squirrel gather in extra food forwinter. He was scampering around thehazels, gather one or two in his mouth thenrunning down to bury them. It is thought thathazels are the main reason for the continuingsuccess of the red squirrel in some areas. Hewill be helping himself by forgetting a fewnuts and letting them grow. If we once morepractised hazel coppicing, we could helpthem.

The hedgehogs are desperately trying tobuild up their body weight ready forhibernation by eating slugs and worms etc.,

(if you want to help any that you have in yourgarden, give them cat or dog food - not milkas they cannot digest it.). In 1974 hedgehogswere introduced to Lewis and Benbecula tocontrol slugs; now it is the hedgehogs whichare the plague, plundering the eggs ofground-nesting birds. The RSPB andScottish Natural Heritage are trying to find ameans of control. They think that thehedgehogs have reached plague proportionsbecause there are no foxes - I rest my case!Maybe we could export some out there?

At home the field mice are seeking winterquarters. My wife was getting food for thehens and scooped up a mouse from the combin - he happily sat on the bowl of food, washing his face, till the corn was put down. The other morning 1 was gathering up mygear for the hill of the pegs in the shed whereit had been left to dry the night before. WhenI tried to put my telescope in its case, it didn'tfit, 1 found that overnight a mouse hadcrawled down the strap and "set up nest" inthe bottom of the case.

As we approach this new millennium with allits high tech, its comforting to know that therhythms of real life have not changed foryears. I leave you with a comment fromArthur Carter in the Countryman magazine:-"Internet! We've been ferreting rabbits internet for years!"

Session House Development

The grandly named Session House is thatcorrugated iron affair attached to the sideand back of the church. It is easy to seehow the building might have been a stepforward for the church when it was builtin the late 1800's. At the end of thiscentury it is also easy to see that the timefor change may have been with us for afew years in order to meet the needs of thechurch today, let alone in the newMillennium.

The Problem

Our thinking has been focused by theimmediate needs of the children in thechurch. We have a thriving SundaySchool who do not have anywhere verysuitable to meet. The McLaren Hall is afine facility, well suited to the range ofthings it accommodates. We are pleasedto be able to use it for the Sunday Schoolbut it is not ideal. It also involvescrossing the road and takes the childrenaway from the community of the church, bringing them back in to take part indifferent things that are happening is noteasy and involves another road crossing. There is the Church Hall but it is too far

away for Sunday School.The Solution

We are proposing to demolish the existingSession House and build a small suite ofrooms that are suitable for children inSunday School. It is envisaged that thedevelopment will also be a facility for thevillage. A small kitchen and comfortablefurnishings will be included to provide fora broad range of uses.

Progress So Far

Plans are being drawn up, discussions aretaking place with the planning departmentand funds are being gathered. The costsare beyond the means of our owncongregation and will be the subject of afundraising effort during the coming year.

In embarking on this project, albeit rootedin the churches own needs, we do see it asa contribution to the community facilitiesof the village. To that end please do talkabout it. look forward to the end result, plan to use it and please support us inprinciple (and more!) as we go throughthe fundraising exercise.

Friday, October 22nd was the date ofthe second Musical Eveningpromoted by the Killin Drama Club. The McLaren High School Orchestraunder the guidance of Ian Mulligan, and from Malta, sopranos ArleneBarlow and Marie Therese Vassallotogether with pianist Lydia Buttigiegentertained a disappointingly smallbut none the less appreciativeaudience.

When the Drama Club was awardedLottery funding four years ago, theyundertook to help promote theMcLaren Hall as a venue forentertainment to suit all tastes, andthe musical Evening was planned tofulfil this obligation and to raisefunds for the Orchestra and theDrama Club.

Those who did attend, witnessed aperformance of the highest calibre bythe Orchestra which included severallocal youngsters, and their workincluded pieces from the DamBusters March and the blockbusterfilm Titanic. A solo performance byfiddler Ruaridh Campbell wascompared by many with the best FolkFestival performances of the summer. The duet Pie Jesu by Arlene andMarie Therese accompanied by Lydiawas for me the highlight of theevening. With the benefit ofhindsight, the evening's performancewas too long.... but at least those whopaid the £5 entry fee were givensuperb value for money.

Promoting such an evening isexpensive, with piano hire and othercosts to be counted, and we hadhoped that there would be a smallsurplus of funds to boost the DramaClub coffers, but sadly this wasn't tobe. All profits from the evening willbe forwarded to the McLaren HighSchool Orchestra and we will also besend a £4 donation from a kind locallady who left the Hall saying, "It waswell worth double the money!".

Gordon Hibbert.

The Green TeamGreen Goings-on

The Green Team has had a busysummer looking at various bits ofnature and our environment.Towards the end of the summer theprogramme of events included acouple of outings.

Some of the older members attendedthe Scottish Wildlife and CountrysideFare held at Vane Farm nearKinross. There were displays andactivities put on by all Scotland'sconservation organisations but thehighlight of the day was a meetingwith Dominic Wood of the BBC'sAnimal Magic Show. This and hismagical show (and the numbers ofkisses he put on his autograph forMaria) provided the topic ofconversation for the entire journeyhome.

Closer to home, and thanks toTommy Gibson, we were able to visitLochay Power Station to learn abouthow electricity is generated fromwater. We saw the three hugeturbines that are turned by the waterpiped from the surrounding hills. Notsurprisingly, there is apparently

enough rain in the area for them all torun for most of the winter. Only onewas running when we arrived, but asecond one switched into actionwhile we were there, presumably aspeople settled down for theirevenings viewing (it wasn't long untilEastenders started). We were alsograteful to Alasdair from Ritchies whocame along to tell us about the workbeing carried out to mend the tunnelsthat carry the water.

Our own efforts at generatingelectricity were less successful! Thewater pressure from our garden hosewas not enough to get the 500revolutions per minute required toturn the dynamo, although it wasenough to get us all pretty wet!

Green Team meetings continue onan almost monthly basis over thewinter (November 18th, January20th, February 17th and March 16th)at Lynedoch from 3.30pm - 5pm. Welook forward to seeing you there.

Marvin Elliot, a very talented sculptorwho has a studio on the island of Arran, wasrecently commissioned by Clive and PamelaBooth at Loch Tay Highland Lodges todesign and work two large wood carvings. Two 150 year old pieces of beech - bothpart of the same tree - weighing 6 tonnesand 5 tonnes respectively, were subjected toMarvin's chosen tool of the trade - achainsaw - which he wields with great flare,as an artist would his paintbrush! The treehas a special history, it was originallyplanted for Queen Victoria in 1850 atBolfracks Estate near Aberfeldy, where itstood until it blew down two years ago.

Both carvings overlook the large outdoorriding arena. One depicts a lady dressagerider in full dress with her Red Setter sittingfaithfully beside her and was commissionedto honour the Millennium. The other hasfour superb horse's heads carved out at eachcorner with a seat moulded out of the centre. This one was carved in memory of Cliveand Pamela's much loved Cleveland Baymare "Swepstone Samantha" - the dam ofPamela's own successful dressage horse, MrFox, with whom she regularly competes.Samantha died tragically in April this yearafter giving birth to a beautiful colt foal,

Clive & Pamela Booth and their son James would like to join withall their staff, horses, ponies and not forgetting

Tay, Sophie and Poppy the dogs to wish the people of Killin avery Merry Christmas and a Happy New Millennium Year.

The photo shows James holding Paris and Pamela with Mr Fox.

"Japstone Sams' Pride" or "Pride" as he isknown. Pride was hand-reared withunwavering devotion and the reward is therefor all to see in this strong handsome andvery special young colt. Also depicted inthis superb carving are Samantha'soffspring Mr Fox, Nikita and Wolfgang. Each one shows tremendous potential forthe future and keeps alive the memory oftheir dam.

Visitors are very welcome to come and lookat Marvin's work.

The Killin GP's havecommissioned research into Healthand Community Care Needs intheir practice area. The work isbeing carried out by ColinRoxburgh of the Small Town andRural Development Group with thesupport of our local CommunityAnimateur, Suzanne Player.

The aim of the research is to lookat access to a wide range ofservices, and to identify how-access could be improved. Thereis also a specific desire to look atbetter ways of matching the needsof people with chronic healthproblems to the range of servicesthat exist - and how these servicescan best be co-ordinated.

They will be putting together aCommunity Profile for the areawhich describes the existingservices, documents any locallyidentified needs, and highlightsgaps in provision. They havealready run a number of focusgroups in Killin, Lochearnheadand Strathfillan, met with theTiddlers and Toddlers, and theKillin Lunch Club to gather localviews on the issues. They are nowconducting a round of interviewswith service providers.

One of the big ideas being flaggedup at the focus group held in Killin, was the need to look at creating amultipurpose centre - a healthyliving centre - which wouldprovide accommodation for arange of clinical and care servicesas well as other social, communityand public services.

If anyone would like to have theirvoice heard as part of this research, they should contact SuzannePlayer on Killin 820154.

Before listing the various prize winners for the year, let us first celebrate the toweringperformance of two of the Club's younger members. They will both take us into theMillennium Year as Killin Golf Club Ladies and Gents Champions. Fiona Ramsay, nowat her somewhat "mature" golfing age of 19(!) is for the second year running the Ladies'Club Champion. Also, at the ripe old age of 15(!!), the youngest EVER Gents' ClubChampion is Kenny Campbell from Cruachan Farm. Do I hear people say they are tooyoung? If you think so, then you are welcome to take them on! Congratulation to Fionaand Kenny on their superb performances.

Earlier in the year, the Junior Section was disbanded due to lack of support. Perhaps thesuccess of our two young champions will encourage youngsters in the village to ask forthe section to be revived.

Dear Editor

I would like to bring to the attention of theresidents of our area, a planningapplication to widen the use of Loch TayHighland Lodges Equestrian Centre.Below is a copy of my letter of objectiondated 19 October 1999.

Planning & Development DeptPerth & Kinross Council2 High Street,PERTH,PH1 5PH

Dear Sirs

I wish to object in the strongest terms tothe application by Mr Booth for a changeof use of the existing indoor equestrianarena to Class II (Assembly & Leisure). Ifind it very difficult to understand how theapplicant can even imagine that Class IIconsent would be given considerationbeyond its specific present use forequestrianism.

I understand Class II to cover "Assembly& Leisure", and within this category Iunderstand the following to be included:use as a dance hall, concert hall orcinema, bingo or karaoke hail, ordiscotheque; a gymnasium or indoorsports arena, but not including motorvehicle or firearms use.

It would be insensitive to allow whatseems to be an under-used equestrianarena to become such a place in ruralhighland Perthshire. This is a placewhere people come for peace andtranquillity, for both residential andholiday use.

music played after the hours of darknessduring "hog roast" events caused me toreflect on how inappropriate loud musicis in this tranquil area. Music was clearlyaudible at my house which is almost ahalf a mile distant in a straight line. In1999 no further similar events wereorganised. We thought they had ceasedfor ever. Not so it seems. Officialsanction is now being sought and I objecton the grounds of noise disturbance androad traffic.

When considering this application youshould also bear in mind several additionfactors. The community of Killin, whichis just over the boundary in StirlingCouncil area, organises very successfulmusical and other events during the year, these are sited in and around the McLarenHall at the centre of the village. TheMcLaren Hall is dedicated to the purposeof concerts and the like. I claim that thereis no "imperative reason of overridingpublic interest" (Highland area localplan 1999) for this development (Policy13c Environment and NatureConservation section of Highland arealocal plan 1999 ~ still to be ratified).Another assembly and leisure centre issimply not needed in the area as a whole.

Another point to consider under the localarea plan is whether the development"meets a new market or extends theseason " - Policy 30a. There is no newmarket. Additionally will it "onlygenerate traffic appropriate to itslocation? " (Policy 30c). Clearly it willgenerate much more traffic in the eveningand night, which cannot be appropriate. How would Tayside Police deal with suchevents so distant from their normal basesat Pitlochry or similarly distant offices?

Finally, under the local area plan 1999(still to be ratified), Policy 47d says theproposal should "not detrimentally affectthe amenity of the countryside ". In myview the proposal would seriously affectthat amenity which visitors and residentshere crave in this busy modern world -the tranquillity of the countryside.

I hope you will consider these points inyour deliberations.

Open Letter To KillinThe sad news of the death of my dear

friend Willie Allan brought back fondmemories of the five happy years my latewife and I spent in Killin from 1953 to1958.

Willie, Dr Kennedy, Gwyn Saunders andmyself formed a small Concert party andtravelled throughout Perthshireperforming for all sorts of causes. 1 canstill hear the golden quality of Willie'svoice and remember with admiration hisChristian sense of right and justice.

It was he and big Alastair Mackinnonwho proposed me to membership of myMother Lodge Breadalbane St Fillans, ofwhich Willie was a dedicated and ferventMaster and Office-bearer. His exampleand guidance to me in the Craft ofFreemasonry was an inspiration forwhich I shall ever be grateful

Like so many others, my life has beenenhanced and enriched for having knownhim. How I would love to hear him singthe song I dedicated to him many yearsago - "The Shores of Loch Tay ", the lastverse of which has a poignant meaningnow for all his many friends.

"Though I may wandero 'er land and o er sea

No place is dearerthan my homeland to me,And when life has ended,

I hope and I prayThat God calls me home

to the shores of Loch Tay. "

His presence will always be felt and hisvoice heard around Killin and the shoresof his beloved Loch Tay.

Goodbye Willie - and thank you.

Dear EditorRecycling & MacMillan Cancer Relief

Recycling does not "cost" - it pays! Inoticed in the September issue of theKillin News that recycling "costs a greatdeal of money ", as reported to you by arepresentative of Stirling Council duringthe August meeting of the KillinCommunity Council. 1 feel that thisstatement is misleading. There is atremendous benefit to all of us if we makethe effort to get involved with recycling, particularly so with aluminium, but alsopaper and glass.

Many of you will have heard of the superbwork being done every day by members ofMacMillan Cancer Relief in their quest toease the suffering of individuals andfamilies who are trying to cope with thecrisis of cancer in their lives. You mayhave experienced first hand the help theygive which varies according to particularneeds - direct nursing care, - specialequipment - even financial help in somesituations. To finance this, the charityrelies heavily on the unstinting effort ofmany volunteers throughout the countryand also in the Loch Tay area. Oneactivity which has generated thousands ofpounds for them over the past three yearsis the collection of aluminium cans, foilsetc., which are sold to companies to makenew cans. The cost of using this recycledaluminium is a fraction of the cost ofextraction. Recycling reduces the needfor space in the rapidly disappearingsites available for landfill. Theenvironmental benefits are obvious.

Numerous village establishments (hotels, bars, caravan sites) have generouslyagreed to save used aluminium cans. 1 'msure they all feel a sense ofaccomplishment from having reducedsome of the waste in our society and atthe same time having helped peopleduring a difficult time. Many thanks tothem - well done!

Who says "recycling is not a viableoption "?Patty Hope, Ardeonaig

Dear EditorI think it is ludicrous that a street lightshould not be replaced for possibly fivemonths — the interval during whichStirling Council deem in their wisdom tobe appropriate for their periodic visits tocheck them in Killin! The street light in Ballechroisk Terracehas not worked for at least six weeks. 1was informed that "It costs £10 to changea bulb in Stirling" - how much more inKillin? The cost should not be the issue, we paythe same Council Tax as those who live inthe towns, but we do not receive the sameservice — why?Mrs Alice MacPherson9 Ballechroisk Terrace, Killin.

Killin Heritage Society - Routes to your Roots!Killin Heritage Society's winterprogramme began on Friday, 1st October.with Mrs. Elma Lindsay. Local HistoryOfficer for Stirling Council, who gave amost informative, interesting and highlyentertaining talk. Researching the familyhistory is something many of us thinkabout but relatively few of us everactually do anything. Mrs. Lindsay'spassion for discovering her own "roots" isinspiring and enabled her to talkauthoritatively, enthusiastically andamusingly about the different "routes" tobe followed, and the surprises yousometimes find along the way!

As she spoke, it became very obvious thatwe should never throw anything away, nomatter how vaguely associated with thefamily we might think it is. Even if youare not particularly interested, someoneelse might be in the future. In this respect,it was disappointing that none of theyounger generations (under 45's!) werepresent at the meeting. Mrs. Lindsayshowed examples of wills and certificatesof birth and death and explained howthese not only give us names but also

provide a social history of the times. Allfamily documents - certificates of births, marriages or deaths; photographs;letters; diaries; bibles; property deeds -prove useful in your search for yourancestors. Census Schedules! 1841-1891), Old Parish Registers, theInternational Genealogical Index, newspapers, gravestones, local directoriesand other local history material can helpbuild up a picture of how your ancestorslived.

The Central Reference Library in Stirlinghas census schedules and old parishregisters, available on microfilm, formuch of this area. The IGI (InternationalGenealogy Index) is available onmicrofiche in Stirling, Bridge of Allanand Dunblane libraries. When you havegathered as much information as you canlocally, the next step is to visit the GeneralRegister Office for Scotland, in NewRegister House, Edinburgh, and theNational Archives of Scotland.

Lady Evelyn'sEmbroidery Exhibition

Another "route" to your roots is viasamplers and at Blair Castle, fromOctober lst to 3rd , there were somewonderful examples of these on display.Blair Castle has quite a collection ofsamplers, all recently restored andremounted, as part of the textileconservation project that is underway atthe castle. Even for those not normallyinterested in embroidery this was anexhibition not to be missed.

Lady Evelyn Stewart Murray, the thirddaughter of the 7th Duke and Duchess ofAtholl was from an early age especiallykeen on embroidery. She spent most ofher life living in Belgium and collectedexquisite pieces of embroidery and lace ofexhibition standard. She became skilledin many forms of embroidery butparticularly enjoyed fine whiteembroidery, producing pieces of work.which are unbelievably perfect in everyminute detail. Her most famous piece isthe British Arms, which took her sevenyears to work. When Blair Castle openedfor the first time in 1936 she sent homeboth her collection and her own work.Since then some pieces have been onshow in the castle, including the BritishArms. Much of her collection is so finethat magnifying glasses were thoughtfullyprovided so that each piece could be seenin detail. This was only the second timethat the whole collection had been ondisplay but already, there are two morespecial exhibitions planned for 2000,from 21 to 24 April and 6 to 8 October.
