The Parable of the Wedding Garment by Thomas Peter Ng In Matthew's Gospel, chapter 22: 1-10 and 11- 14, we learn about the parable of the wedding feast and the wedding garment. This parable unfolds in three acts. In verses 2-7, there are two calls to the proper guests. The outcasts are called as can be seen in verses 8-10. Here, Jesus refers to the Jews who were called to accept the Kingdom of God through the Messiah, but they turned down. So, the outcasts including the tax collectors, the people in despised trades, the sinners and the good people were invited. In verses 11-14, the parable unfolds the sorting out at the wedding. From here, we can read that the King went in to look at the guests and saw a man who was not wearing wedding garment. The man was asked but said nothing. He was then tied and thrown outside in the dark. Why the invitee without wedding garment was punished? Bible scholars hold the view that the kings of the Middle East had the custom of providing garments befitting the occasion when they invited people for wedding banquets and other banquets. Symbolically, garments or clothing are used in the Bible to highlight spiritual truths. In the Old Testament, God clothed those who have been saved with the garment of salvation. (Reference: The garments of salvation and the robe of righteousness in Isaiah 61:10 and Ezekiel 16:8-14.) In Revelation, “The bride clothed with fine linen, bright and pure at the marriage of the lamb (19:8).” “... the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints (19:9).” In the New Testament, the “best robe” that the father puts on his prodigal son indicates the re- established son ship (Luke 15:22). The dazzling white clothes of Jesus at the Transfiguration stand as symbol of glory (Matthew 17:2). The wedding banquet symbolizes the kingdom of heaven. To enter it, suitable good works must be performed. The good works are represented by the wedding garment. Those who have failed to do good works will be punished. At the time of Jesus, wedding banquets were held at night. The darkness outside the banquet hall indicates fear and punishment (Matthew 22:13). Modern scholars also explain that today many Catholics/Christians have the wrong idea that salvation is a free gift of God and human deed (various works of mercy) have no special value. Many of them believe that salvation would be theirs automatically once they have been baptized and become members of any church. The parable of the wedding garment here is reminding us that salvation might not be possible on the last judgment day without the wedding garment of repentance from sins and of good works.
