s Starting August 2013, Brother Luis Carrasquero will be attending the University of Southern California in order to obtain his Masters in mechanical engineering with a focus in energy conversion. When he first arrived at UC Riverside to obtain his undergraduate degree, he thought he wasn’t going to be interested in graduate school or even think it was worth it. After talking to professors, attending numerous graduate panels, and getting involved in research with Professor Mangolini from the mechanical engineering department, he found a true passion and craving to continue his education journey. At this point of his life, he believes that obtaining a Masters is a huge personal and professional achievement, and he is eager to take on this challenge and possibly continue on obtaining his Ph.D. he is very pleased to be attending such a prestigious program, and he is looking forward on continuing his research experience. Besides from USC having an ideal engineering program, he decided to take his skills to USC because he wanted to be close to his family and possibly work part time near both his school and home.

For the past eight months, Brother Dante J. O'Hara has been heavily involved with undergraduate research under Physics Professor, Roland Kawakami. O'Hara led a project this past fall along with now Postdoctoral Associate, Adrian Swartz that led to new results regarding the doping of molecular oxygen on single-layer graphene in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). The original project was to design, assemble and test an 'atomic oxygen cracker source' that would essentially dissociate molecular oxygen into either ionic or atomic oxygen. Inconsistent results led to the discovery that molecular oxygen was having an affect on single-layer graphene, where research had already been conducting at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The new data, founded with control tests by PhD Candidate, Hua Wen led to a new publication that will be published in May. It will focus on four key points: saturation behavior of the molecular oxygen, adsoprtion rate related to the oxygen (i.e., Langmuir), electron mobility change, and the gate dependence adsorption.

Last year Brother Demetri Wilright attended his first National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) National Convention. During the National Convention, Wilright was elected as the 2012-2013 Southern California Zone Chair. As Southern California Zone Chair, Wilright was in charge of over 16 Chapters ranging from Bakersfield to San Diego. During his term, his goal was to unite Southern California Chapters and increase the communication between chapters. He felt that his goal was accomplished this year and he wanted to do the same regionally building upon his success. With his experience working with the Regional Executive Board (REB) for NSBE he decided to step into a higher role in the organization. At NSBE National Convention, Wilright ran for the position of Region 6 Chair. Wilright was elected as the 2013-2014 Region 6 Chair and will be presiding over 13 states, starting May 1st. He is excited to be taking on such a big role in NSBE and definitely wants to continue improving Region 6.

Last quarter, brothers (as pictured) Lauren Wong, Beth Mende, and Luis Carrasquero, received the California Space Consortium Undergraduate Research Grant. They were selected out of a pool of more than twenty qualified applicants with an average GPA of 3.3. Through our professional development workshops, our members were able to gain connections with faculty and develop the necessary skills to write a proposal in order to receive the $2000 grant.

Theta Tau colony at the University of California, Riverside will be holding a Bike-a-thon to raise money for Relay For Life. The Bike-a-thon will be taking place at the Bell Tower on Campus and each biker will be participating for $5 and all proceeds will be going toward Relay For Life. Relay for Life will be taking place the following weekend and our colony will be having two teams participate in the event. Theta Tau at University of California, Riverside will be looking for support and if you would like to donate you can donate by scanning the QR code on page one or register at this link: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/?team_id=1300988&pg=teDonathttp://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/?team_id=1300988&pg=team&fr_id=48183

After regionals, all of the Southern California chapters and colonies wanted another opportunity to spend time with other brothers. Several members of the Pi Delta chapter (University of California, Irvine) began to organize a camping trip and the entire ordeal was on its way. Once we settled in our camping sites, we gathered around the fire and immediately began to swap stories and generally enjoy the opportunity of spending time with fellow brothers. The next morning we all awoke and hiked out to the beach which was a little over a mile away from our campsite. At the beach, most of us played either soccer or volleyball while the rest just enjoyed the sun and good company. While the beach was amazing, it was also extremely tiring so we all went back and rested and fed ourselves in order to prepare ourselves for another night at the fire where we shared stories, sang along to many different songs, and played several different camp fire games. The weekend was an amazing opportunity to really bring all of the chapters and colonies together and really experience the amazing brotherhood within Theta Tau.
