My mum put me in for the competition and I went because my brother, JonathanDuckworth, said he enjoyed his time as Mr St Helier a few years ago. Myfamily were proud that I entered and my friends thought it was a different

thing to do and I was the subject of many jokes but I didn’t mind. The competitionevening itself started with a good meal with my family and then the interview withthe judges took place with all the questions they had to put to me which was a lotof fun. When I heard I’d won I was very happy as it’s always nice to winsomething and I was really looking forward to helping and supporting theParish, and I hope that over the past year I’ve managed to achieve this.

One of my most memorable experiences has of course been the Battle of Flowersas it’s one of the biggest events of the year. It’s been a new experience for me but Ireally enjoyed it nonetheless. I’ve enjoyed attending various events and meetingpeople but the twinning games were also really good fun, meeting the Frenchvisitors and also other people from Jersey that I didn’t know.

A lasting benefit of taking on the role of Mr St Helier is that I continue to seepeople that I’ve met on the street and always say hello to them – as everyoneknows it’s not what you know over here in Jersey, but who you know.

To anyone thinking of entering this year’s competition, just make sure you’re upto attending all of the events, stay smiling and enjoy yourself as there’s no point

doing it if you’re not having fun.

Hailing from Australia, Beth establishedher clinic in Jersey last year. She is apassionate advocate of non-invasiveprocedures and her growing client list istestament to the success of that ethos.“Most of us have something that wewould like to improve about our face orbody,” she says. “But people are oftenapprehensive about invasive cosmeticsurgery and, as a result, they areincreasingly turning to non-invasive waysto tighten the skin on their face and neckto negate the effects of ageing, or lose thatlast couple of inches so they can fit into afavourite pair of jeans.”

says. “I have been a beauty therapist for forty-three years and, as aconsequence, I have an in depth understanding of the age relatedissues we have with our skin. This gives me a credibility and rapportwith clients across a broad age range which has resulted in lots ofvery happy customers and word of mouth referrals to their friendsand family members.”

Beth undertook training in London touse the PureGenesis laser and is fullyauthorized, certified and insured to useLaser Lipo and aesthetic devices. Bethmaintains a high level of professionalismwhilst creating a friendly environmentwhere each client is treated as anindividual and not a commodity.

People are often confused about themerits of the plethora of treatmentspromoted in the industry. Coupled withan inhibition in talking about their ownbody issues they are often reluctant totake the first step. During the initial, free, consultation Beth puts her clients at easewhilst establishing their needs. A bespokecourse of treatment is then suggestedcomplemented by Beth’s own range ofnatural skin care products. Advocatingan holistic approach to overall wellbeing,Beth will also include advice onnutrition, exercise and lifestyle.

Typically a treatment will last for an hour. However, Beth allows for flexibility andwill extend the allotted time if necessary.New for this year are a series of minitreatments called Lunchtime Lifts witheach treatment taking about 30 minutes. The clinic is also open on Saturdays, which has proved very popular for thosewho find it difficult to commit toweekday appointments.

Beth’s treatments aren’t exclusive towomen. Men are also conscious of theirspare tyres and signs of ageing on theirskin and are also seeing the benefits ofLipolysis.

The promenade at Havre des Pasis one of those bits of seafrontwe rather take for granted. It

isn't one of those classic, Englishseaside bits of promenade. Instead, itis a rather narrow walkway frontingwhat was once a row of hotels. Thatadjoining architecture is mostly of thepost-war-tourism-boom variety: i.e.familiar rather than attractive. Thepromenade itself is rather utilitarian. The surface is concrete. The lighting isunattractive. But there is seating torelax in the sun and enjoy the seaviews, and the oasis of the AllixShipyard gardens is a bonus. Thebustle of tourists thronging thiswalkway is now, alas, a memory. Butthere are still some hotels in the area, and it remains a pleasant place to sitand stroll on a sunny day.

The promenade is rather a Cinderellaof public spaces. It isn't muchcelebrated, and it surely could beupgraded a bit. The paving could bebetter. Evergreen bushes in plantersmight be nice; perhaps a line offlagpoles, fluttering national flags likethey have at continental resorts? Thereare possibilities.

How sad then that it is all so let downby the ground floor of the former Hotelde la Plage. The dining rooms and barsof this hotel once had large, plate glasswindows fronting onto the promenade. In winter months these would beprotected from the inevitable high tidesby heavy duty roller shutters. But eversince the establishment was convertedto accommodation, the ground floorwindows have been shuttered on apermanent basis. Presumably thefunction rooms behind are no longerused, but nothing screams "down at heelseaside resort" louder than this long, shabby line of boarded up windows. They really give the place a run-downfeel. The Planning Departmentobviously overlooked this when theypassed the plans for the conversion.Surely it would be better if the windowswere blocked up properly? Plainrendered walls would be preferable. And they could even be brightened upwith murals or artwork. But with theshabby shutters established as apermanent feature for so long now, howcan we ever hope for a better solution?

SCORE OUT OF 10: 0 (because theshutters imply a total lack of effort)

up with the disturbance caused by people who have had toomuch to drink shouting at the top of their voices as they maketheir way home from the night clubs between 2 and 3 o'clock inthe morning. Yet this is becoming very much the norm in someparts of the Parish, especially at the weekends. Recently therewas a brawl in my street which went on for ten minutes or soat which point I telephoned the police. I was told that theincident desk had only received one other complaint, whichsurprised me as the noise must have disturbed hundreds of

residents. The'evening economy'is important toJersey, and town'snightlife avaluable part ofthe tourism 'offer',but it is unacceptablefor residents – andoff-putting for ourvisitors – if the anti-socialbehaviour of a minority goes unchecked. That's why it'simportant that we do telephone the police (612612) when weare disturbed in the early hours, as if more calls of this sort arereceived and logged the issue will receive greater priority andmore people will be charged for being drunk and disorderly.Parishioners who are concerned about this issue may also wishto comment on the Alcohol and Licensing Strategy(www.gov.je/consult) as one of the proposals is to extendlicensing hours. Does this mean we can look forward to beingwoken up between 3 and 4am instead?

The invasion of Jersey by Frenchsoldiers led by Baron de Rullecourt233 years ago was celebrated at

the beginning of January by a walk infollowing the route taken by theSt Lawrence regiment of the JerseyMilitia and a re-enactment in the RoyalSquare, which was also attended by theLieutenant Governor, Sir John McColl. On arrival in St Helier the walkers, ledby local historian Frank Falle, werejoined by pipers of the Jersey Pipe Band, the 1781 Jersey Militia and the Jersey ArmyCadet Force, processing through the townto the Royal Square which was the siteof the Battle of Jersey. The creation of atableau representing 'The Death of MajorPeirson', the famous painting of the battle

by John Singleton Copley, has become anenjoyable part of the event each year, and this year the tableau was organisedby St Helier Roads Committee memberGeraint Jennings. The Vicar of the TownChurch read the following prayer:

Almighty God,

We thank you that through many dangersand difficulties you have sustained thisIsland and her people.

Through the courage and conviction ofnumerous faithful people, you haveprotected us in times of conflict, invasionand warfare.

Today our battles may not be fought withmusket and cannon, but still we contend

with difficulties of various kinds, andagain Heavenly Father, we look to youand to those of a good heart to preserveall that is honourable, true and pleasingin Jersey.

We thank you for all that is past and wewill trust you for all that's to come.

And now, may the resilience of the brave, the integrity of the good and the peace ofthe contented be our experience. And theblessing of God Almighty: the Father, theSon and the Holy Spirit be upon you whoare gathered here, upon those whom youlove and care for and upon this Islandnow, throughout this unfolding year andalways.

Amen.

THE BLOOD OF THE EARTH

Rain in February is the blood of the earth, according toone of our old ditons, and after the downpours andfloods we've had this winter it wouldn't be surprising ifwe weren't keen on a thorough soaking this month.

You can, as it happens, have too much of a good thing. When it doesn't rain and the reservoirs are dry, peoplecomplain. And when you can't poke your nose outsidewithout getting doused, people naturally moan. When it'sboiling hot, it's a refreshing shower of rain you'd like; butwhen it's tipping down, you'd really rather like to see thesun come out again.

But what sort of weather is most loved? Fine sunnyweather that makes tourists and children happy? Orlovely rain that waters the fields and cheers up farmers?Well, everything depends on the season and what you'dlike to do. People don't want to go shopping in town in wetweather, and, for the economy, money should circulatelike the blood in a body.

What pumps the blood around is the heart. We see a loadof blood-red hearts around and about in February in therun-up to Valentine's Day. It's the hope in the hearts ofevery shopkeeper and business in Town that customerswill "squeeze the blood out of their purses" this year andthat that'll mark a step forward for an improvingeconomy. Goodness me, it's about time! So buy somethingfor your Valentine - money is round so it rolls around.

Neither the rain nor the sun is my Valentine. My heartbelongs to Saint Helier in all weathers!

Valentine’s Day

Several theories and legends abound as to the origin ofValentine’s Day and, indeed, it seems there might have beenthree saints called Valentine, all of whom were martyred. But romantic consensus seems to support the story of aChristian saint and priest called Valentinus who lived inthe third century AD. Roman Emperor, Claudius II, bannedhis soldiers from marrying, believing it made them weakand less efficient if they worried what effect their dyingwould have on their families. Valentinus, aghast at thisunjust edict, conducted marriages secretly until he wascaught and imprisoned under a sentence of death.

Legend continues that, whilst in prison, the blind daughterof his jailer, Asterius, was brought to Valentinus and, withthe power of his faith and sainthood, he restored her sight.Whether Valentinus and the girl were just friends orbecame lovers has occupied the minds of scholars throughthe centuries. But what is agreed by many, and whatperpetuates the legend, is that Valentinus was a braveromantic. It is thought that on the eve of his execution hepenned a letter to the jailor’s daughter with the salutation‘from your Valentine’, a phrase that adorns most of theheart strewn cards we receive or send today.

In the UK Valentine’s Day started to be celebrated properlyin the 17th century and, by the 1800s, notes wereexchanged between friends and lovers. By the beginning ofthe 20th century, with improved methods of printing, cardsbegan to replace letters and now Valentine’s Day is firmlyentrenched as a day of romance and love.

So, with February 14th fast approaching, are you ready?Have you bought that perfect gift for your perfect partner ordo you shun the notion that love should only be declaredonce a year? Whatever your thoughts, what fun it is towatch us grown men panic as we hope the garage on theway home has some flowers left – and chocolates to give a

double result - and that the depth of our unbridled lovecame across in the hastily written card we left on thepillow that morning. Contrast this with the women whoplan perfectly and thoughtfully for the day whilst sighing, knowingly, at our imperfections. And what of the singleton?Do they smile, mischievously, when more than one cardarrives on the mat? Or do they look forlornly as thepostman disappears down the garden path havingdelivered nothing but bills? How about in the work place? Will the mailman bring a card from you-know-who inaccounts first thing or do they have to hope for luck on thesecond run?

Valentine’s Day, a day when love is declared or reaffirmed,a day when gifts abound and cards rain through theletterbox, a day the UK’s heartbeat can be measured inlove. For you men will it be the same old, same old –chocolates, flowers, romantic meal, or none of the above? What about you ladies? Will you buy chocolates, thatromantic meal or aftershave for your dream man?

A 2012 survey commissioned by the Travelodge Hotelgroup showed that they were the top three gifts that menand women in the UK bought each other on Valentine’sDay. It also showed that men would spend £611 million andwomen £269 million confirming overwhelmingly that menare by far the more guilt ridden, I mean, ahem, romantic ofthe two sexes.

Whatever your inclination this Valentine’s Day, spare athought for Valentinus who died around 270 A.D. unawarethat his sacrifice would be recognised each year and thatwe would plunder the wares of florists, chocolatiers and àla carte menus the world over in displays of love andromantic nuance for that special person.

Now, I must get to that garage!

It’s the annual, officiallove fest when declarations of love are scattered in hope from Cupid’s bow or bespoke endearmentsare sent to our one and only. But who was Saint Valentine and why do we celebrate him every year? What inspires us to choose this day above all others to reveal our romantic inner selves?

In the month that we celebrate St Valentine’s Day, whatcould be more fitting than to introduce you to John andEleonora Jeune.

Our Octogenarian newlyweds living at St Ewold’s ResidentialHome in St Helier were delighted to be asked to appear on ourfront cover this month. John, a Jerseyman, and Eleonora, who

was born in Linz in Austria, met on Christmas Day 1992. Johnhad been a widower for four years and was spendingChristmas Day with his mother Jessie at St Helier House andEleonora, who had been widowed for two years, had beeninvited by the Home for lunch rather than spend the day alone. There was an instant spark – Eleonora says, ‘I rememberthinking how smart he was’, and John, it seems, was equallyimpressed.

Eleonora invited John to spend Boxing Day with her, by AprilJohn had moved into Eleonora’s cosy flat and by August theywere engaged. They were soon inseparable and the yearspassed quickly. They both enjoyed walking, an occasionalflutter on the horses and watching football. Growing older theystruggled in different ways health-wise but it was soon afterJohn’s stroke, which Eleonora nursed him through, that theydecided that they would be more comfortable in care.

Deciding that this was a new chapter in their lives they finallydecided to ‘tie the knot’ and so, on 28th July 2009, the day beforethey moved into care, they were married in a quiet ceremony atSt Thomas’s Church. Despite both being in wheelchairs Eleonoraand John couldn’t look any happier in the wedding photographproudly displayed in their lounge at St Ewold’s.

John and Eleonora continue to enjoy life to the full both in andoutside of St Ewold’s. Asking John to describe Eleonora inthree words he answers ‘Very, very nice’, and asking Eleonorathe same question she can’t contain herself. ‘John is a quietman. He has good manners, he is romantic at heart and alwaysgreets me with a kiss. We look after each other’ she says...’ andSt Ewold’s looks after us both.’

After the complete restoration of the Town Church andthat of its great pipe organ, now banners and mediapublicity have heralded a new pattern of Sunday

services at St Helier Parish Church.

Following a survey and congregational discussion in theAutumn, it was decided to commit ourselves to a six monthexperimental period in which Sunday mornings in particularwould take on a new structure. The principal change is that, inplace of the main 10am service, two new services wouldemerge, each with a very distinct ‘flavour’: one at 9.30am andthe next at 11am. Now Sunday mornings look like this:

8.00am A Book of Common Prayer, said Holy Communionservice. This is unchanged from the former pattern.

9.30am A ‘contemporary’ style service in which no use ismade of books or service sheets. No clerical robesare worn. All words and details are PowerPointed. There is a Sunday school and, if you arrive in goodtime, coffee and doughnuts are provided. Thisservice is fun, upbeat and accessible to all. There is athought-provoking and engaging sermon and furtherrefreshments after the service.

11.00am This service is ‘traditional’ in style, following eithera Common Worship or a Book of Common Prayeroutline. The clergy are robed and the service is ablyled by the choir and choristers. Early arrivals willoverlap with the first congregation and enjoyrefreshments together. This is usually a service ofHoly Communion with the same readings andsermon as that from the earlier service. This is bestdescribed as dignified and familiar.

Finally, the day rounds off with our ‘Sundays @ Six’ servicein which there is a clear emphasis on strong preach / teaching. All the services are well-publicised on the quarterly servicecard available from the Church.

The Vicar, Chris Jervis, said, “This new pattern is designedto make church accessible to so many more people. Everyoneshould be able to find a service style which suits theirpreferences. I can guarantee that you’ll find a warm welcomewhichever service you turn up to. If you have not been for awhile then ‘give it a go’”.

Town Centre Manager RichardMacKenzie brings us up to datewith monthly events and activitiesaround the streets of St Helier

This time of year is both reflective and anticipatory.Christmas has now gone and with it weather that notonly drove people away from the Town Centre but

literally blew them away. The last week of the Christmasshopping season is the most important week of the year formany retailers, and the weather gods were not kind to us.

However the good news is that we are still having new shopsopening in town and it is great to see that the empty shop at theend of Beresford Street in Halkett Place has now opened and isoccupied by Seedee Jons, a local retailer with a great lookingshop. Other shops are investing in new shop fits, and there areenquiries from businesses asking about available spaces intown.

Town mattersWork is now being carried out to see what can be done toencourage people into town not just to shop but to enjoy anevent that is taking place there. Last year’s street party was anoutstanding example of this, and as well as repeating it this yearthere are plans to hold a weekly market in Broad Street onSundays during the summer.

If you have any ideas that you feel would enhance the town bycreating an exciting and interesting event please contact me.

If you dont have a Will:• Your estate could be distributed in a way that doesn’t reflect your wishes

• Your wishes about who would look after your children if you died may not be known

We don’t like to talk about death – but it is important to put things in place in order that our intentions are known and followed once we are gone.

Give us a call to ask any questions you have about making your Will. We will provide an initial fixed fee quote for preparing your Will so you know what the cost will be.

There are no hidden charges and we will guide you through the process, in a simple and stress-free way.

It’s time toWill

When it comes to making a Will, most of us put itoff. We know it’s important, but let’s be honest,it’s one of those things that slips to the bottomof the priority pile.

So, we thought it was worth taking five minutes to askthe people in the know, the lawyers themselves, aboutthis sensitive and important subject. We put the questionswe all have, but avoid asking, to Advocate Stephen Craneand English Solicitor Janina Porter from the law firmCrane SJ Advocate.

We all know death is a certainty, but it’s notsomething we like to talk about! Do you think that’s whypeople put off making a Will?

Answer: Some people are uncomfortable thinking about thesubject but in my experience, as soon as we start theprocess, this passes. The thought of talking about your Willis a lot worse than the reality.

What exactly is a Will?

Answer: A Will states clearly who you want to administeryour estate and what you would like to happen to itfollowing your death. Having a Will provides certainty foryour family at a difficult time and can reduce the risk of adispute arising between surviving relatives.

When is the right time to make a Will?

Answer: Now is the time if you own property, or arerecently married, divorced or if you have children.

OK, so why is it important to have one?

Answer: So you can appoint an Executor, who is the personwho carries out the administration of your Will after yourdeath. A Will also sets out who inherits your estate and inwhat proportions, and if you have children, to specify whoyou want as their Guardian. You can also provide for along-term partner, friend or charity, who will otherwisenot inherit anything and confirm your funeral wishes.

We all know lawyers’ bills can be steep. Does themeter start running from the second we call you?

Answer: No. As soon as we know your instructions, weprovide you with a fixed fee quote so you know from thestart what the cost will be. There are no hidden charges.

Why should people consider instructing your firmCrane SJ Advocate?

Answer: Both Janina and I have considerable experiencedrafting Wills. We’re approachable and can guide youthrough the process in a simple and stress-free way.

What’s your Story? This was aprogramme that the JerseyArchive first installed in 2008.

Having secured sponsorship from locallaw firm Appleby the Archive was ableto open on numerous Saturday morningsand hold a series of talks with localthemes. It was the first year the familyhistory of local celebrities such asGraeme Le Saux and Peter Mac werestudied. The second year the programmeevolved to look at particular subjects andrecords held by the Jersey Archive, suchas Crime, Punishment and Religion. What’s your Street’s Story? This wasoriginally tried in 2010 and struck achord with the public, which sawaudience numbers grow year on year.

From Stuart NicolleSenior Archivist

The Archive staff have delved intoareas all over the Island, includingareas in St Helier such as the

Esplanade, Rouge Bouillon, Bath Streetand Pier Road. Many interesting storieshave been uncovered including the shadypast of Pier Road. The mural half way upthe Road hints at Pier Road’s pastreputation as a red light district, butArchive staff were unsure what they weregoing to find when first exploring theParish of St Helier and Court Records.

It is striking whilst looking at the recordsof the St Helier Parish Assembly theamount of pubs that can be found inPier Road. In 1841 there were eightestablishments that were recommendedfor a licence to sell alcohol. With justover 40 numbered buildings in the wholeof Pier Road this is a significant number.

The named individuals from 1841include:

• Daniel Cotes of the White Hart pub– 5 Pier Road.

• Jeanne Tirel – the Lord Nelson pub

• Anne Pinel, widow Le Feuvre, whoran a shop that sold alcohol.

• Nicolas Jean Le Vesconte, who alsoran a shop that sold alcohol from5, Pier Road, the same venue asDaniel Cotes.

• Francis Ford – Royal Hotel.

• John Dyer – the Devonshire andDorset Inn.

• Elizabeth Bellman, wife of Matthewswho ran the Commercial Inn

• Anne Le Gallais who ran a shop inthe road.

• John Kimber – 22 Pier Road, alsoapplied for a licence but was turneddown for unspecified reasons.

There are a couple of intriguing entriesin the later licence recommendations inSt Helier. In 1848 it is recorded that theestablishment of Mrs Coates, wife ofRaney, in Pier Road, was turned downfor a licence.

The following year’s recommendationssee another entry relating to Mrs Coates. It records that on the proposition ofMr Josue Brayn, the Assembly refused theapplication for a licence by Mrs Coatesbecause she had “une maison dereglie.”So 5, Pier Road was being used as abrothel at this time.

Mrs Coates’ was not the only establishmentin Pier Road that ran into trouble. In 1848Edmund Scott was granted a licence forhis venue, the Rose of Old England, inPier Road. This was renewed in 1849 butby the following year Scott had fallen foulof the local constabulary.

He can be found in trouble in the RoyalCourt in November 1850. Some soldiers

were absent without permission fromthe Garrison. A sergeant from the26th Regiment was sent out with somesoldiers to round them up. When theygot to the Rose of Old England theyfound one of their missing soldiers. When the Sergeant tried to see if therewere any other absentees to be foundScott forcibly stopped the search andgrossly insulted them.

The Adjutant of the 26th Regimentinformed the Constable at the same timethat two other soldiers of the Garrisonhad recently been absent withoutpermission. They had been found inScott’s pub with prostitutes.

The licensing assembly for the followingyear records the failure of Scott’s licencerenewal attempt. At the Assembly theHonorary Police made it known that theywanted Scott’s application rejected. Itwas recorded that a large number of“filles publique”, or prostitutes, gatheredin Scott’s public house in Pier Road andcrowded in the doorway causing anuisance for the area. Susan Pitcher, wifeof Scott, attempted to apply for a licencethe following year but was again turneddown.

Scott kept getting in trouble with the lawand in 1853 was eventually sent toSouthampton and ordered not to return. So Pier Road’s reputation as a red lightdistrict was justified.
