Définition
On appelle potentiel thermodynamique, toute fonction thermodynamique permettant de déterminer l’évolution d’un système libéré de ses contraintes extérieures ou intérieures et vérifiant les propriétés suivantes :
•Un potentiel thermodynamique décroît lors de l’évolution spontanée du système
•Lorsque le système est à l’équilibre thermodynamique, le potentiel thermodynamique est minimal.

On définit une nouvelle fonction d’état du système, appelée enthalpie libre (fonction de Gibbs), par :
