What is temperature control?

Technological evolutionThe miniaturisation of components, the generalisation of electronics, the appearance of new products based on power electronics mean that temperature management is a need that must increasingly be taken into account in the design of electrical and/or electronic switchboards.

What are the advantages of good temperature control?Temperature control in electrical switchboards is one of the important factors of good industrial maintenance. The risks involved through failure to have a suitable thermal solution are multiple, affecting the life of components and the performance of installations to such an extent that they may halt production. The service life of the components themselves is a function of the temperature and humidity conditions in the enclosure. Ideal are values from +15…+35 ºC for temperature and from 30 to 90% relative humidity (RH).

Cooling, Heating, controllingJust like the degrees of IP/IK protection suited to each installation, the equipment installed inside an enclosure needs suitable thermal protection. There are different solutions to these problems, depending on environmental conditions, the nature of the components of the electrical switchboard, etc.In some cases it is suffi cient to oversize the enclosure, use fans or air-air exchangers. In other, more extreme cases, in which the ambient temperature is higher, air-water heat exchangers or cooling units must be used.

A solution for every needWith this objective in mind, Himel proposes a comprehensive Thermal Offer to secure your installation.

Natural convection helps to reduce the

temperature inside the enclosure, whereby

installing (without fi lter) outlet grilles or raising

the enclosure tops may be a suitable solution.

Fans with a Himel fi lter have been designed to

evacuate a large amount of heat economically.

They have an aluminium exchange battery that

separates the two air circuits (inside and outside)

and stops dust from getting inside.

When to use them

This solution is only feasible in cases where the

power that has to be dissipated is weak, and in

atmospheres with low dust levels.

When you need to evacuate greater dissipated

power, and when the outside environment is

polluted.

In highly polluted atmospheres or when large

amounts of heat must be evacuated without

bringing the outside and inside atmospheres

into contact.

Ta: ambient temperature

Td: temperature required

The inside and outside air circuits are

independent.

Air-water exchangers Cooling Heating

They cool the enclosure by means of a water-cooled exchange

battery.

The regulation of the temperature in the enclosure is performed

by means of a thermostat that closes or opens an

electro-valve.

They are cooling unit devices that guarantee effective and

independent cooling from the outside environment, and avoid

the appearance of heat sources.

Resistance heaters avoid problems of condensation inside the

enclosure and guarantee maintenance of the ideal temperature

for the correct operation of the electronic components.

c When a large amount of heat has to be evacuated and a

water cooling installation stable in temperature and fl ow is

available.

c Particularly suitable for diffi cult and highly polluted

atmosphere, since there is no outside air circuit.

c Our cooling units can be used in the severest atmospheres,

where the temperature can reach up to 55 ºC.

c Our cooling units feature the temperature adjustment

function, as well as an indication of any anomalies by

means of an alarm.

Resistance heaters are used to heat the electrical switchboard

when the ambient temperature is too low, or to prevent the

formation of condensation water.

c The inside temperature of the enclosure does not depend on

the outside.

c They do not bring the atmospheres inside and outside the

enclosure into contact.

c It has a leak detection device.

c Even temperature inside the enclosure.

c High protection degree (IP54).

c They use ecological gas.

c Small size.

c Fitted with a PTC-type heating element that stabilises the

surface temperature of the aluminium section.

c In two versions: insulated, with low surface temperature

and in aluminium with a surface temperature below

< 75 ºC.

c The fan-equipped resistance heaters guarantee the

temperature inside the enclosure and prevent hot spots.

c They need cold water.

c They need a specifi c plumbing installation.

c The installation of a drain is recommended.

c Maintenance is required: fi lter change.

Natural ventilation

Forced ventilation

The movement of air inside the enclosure with the aid of a fan makes it possible to:

1 Increase thermal dissipation through the enclosure walls and, as a result, reduce the inside temperature.

2 Avoid hot spots in the enclosure (even temperature) harmful to some components.

Solution 2Solution 1

VENTILATION SYSTEMS Selection guide

The provision of fresh air from the outside by means of ventilation grills improves the dissipation of heat by natural convection. However, this solution is feasible in cases where the power to be dissipated is weak and in atmospheres with low dust levels. There are 4 ways of ventilating, with a common principle: entry of cold air through the bottom of the enclosure by means of an accessory and the exit of hot air through the top of the enclosure by means of an accessory:

1 By elevating the ceiling of the enclosures (only in Spacial 6000 models) and adding a fi lterless bottom air inlet (solution 1).

2 By means of a ceiling ventilation device, adding a fi lterless air inlet at the bottom (solution 1).

3 By means of inlet and outlet grills (fi lterless) (solution 2).

4 By means of ventilation lugs (Solution for insulating enclosures).

General features:

c The Himel fans are comprised of an axial motor, a protection housing for the front and rear sides, and a filter for retaining powder particles.

c The filter can even be replaced during operation, without any risk of contact with the blades or other rotating elements.

c Optionally, the fans can be fitted with a fine filter to provide more efficient protection for dust-sensitive installations.

c The cut-out template included with the standard supply avoids drawing and protects the enclosure surface from the risk of scratches during handling.

Conditions of use:

c The outside temperature Te should be 5 °C below the temperature required Ts in the enclosure.

c The filters the fans are equipped with must be cleaned or replaced periodically.

c The environment should be relatively “clean” and over-frequent filter replacement should be avoided.

c Load losses caused by the outlet element (grill with filter, ventilation louvre or single opening) must be taken into consideration to determine ventilation flow.

c Available in two versions: top and side mounting versions.

c The power of mechanically regulated cooling units ranges from 240 to 3100 W. There is always equipment which is suited to your needs.

c Comfortable and easy to assemble and disassemble.

c The side installation models can be semi-recessed with the use of the specific accessory.

Easy access to the condenser allows simplifi ed cleaning through blowing.

Disassemble of the cooling units is not necessary for the high temperature compressor and external fan maintenances.

The inside and outside air circuits are perfectly separated and maintain IP54 watertightness of the enclosure.

Two fans guarantee air circulation in each one of the circuits:

c Internal circuit fan. It is on permanently, which maintains an even temperature inside the enclosure, avoids the appearance of hot spots and guarantees a correct reading of the inside temperature of the enclosure by the set-point thermostat.

c External circuit fan. The inside thermostat controls the fan and starts it up when the temperature of the air inside the enclosure is above the maximum value displayed.

The air conditioning units come with an adjustable thermostat that controls the inside temperature of the enclosure: c It avoids the installation

of an auxiliary control thermostat.

c It guarantees the correct reading of the inside temperature of the enclosure.

Temperature adjustment range: +20 ºC to +50 ºC (supplied factory-adjusted to 35 ºC).

c The top mounting models feature a condensation water automatic evaporation system with an exclusive safety system that switches off the apparatus or issues an alarm if the condensation water level is exceeded.

c They also feature an exclusive voluntary unloading system that makes it possible to empty the water from the condensation tray.

They are equipped with an automatic reset pressostat and a contact thermostat that detects the overpressure in the compressor circuit and interrupts it and the outside circuit fan, thus avoiding possible faults.

Fitted with a fault warning relay, it provides the possibility of operating an alarm indicator, shutting down the apparatus.

Fitted with high pressure compressors that allow them to work at outside temperatures of up to +55 ºC.

Environmentally friendly.

Use of R134a ecological gas.

CLL Cooling units

Cooling units for switchboards:

c Respect for the environment by using the ecological gas R134a.

c Automatic evaporation of condensation water on all top mounting models.

c Cooling power of 240 W to 3100 W.

c Possibility of partial flush mounting for all side mounting models.

General features:

c Temperature setting can be adjusted from +20 to +50 ºC.

c As standard, the units are fitted with an automatic reset pressure switch. A value higher than safety pressure value (on the high pressure circuit) activates compressor and external fan switch-off.

c Internal and external air circuits are totally independent and IP54 sealing is assured between external ambient air and air within the enclosure.

c The internal circuit fan which runs continuously, prevents formation of hot spots and improves thermal dissipation of the enclosure.

c The equipment is fitted with switches enabling an alarm report.

c Cooling power of 240 W to 3100 W.

c Possibility of partial flush mounting.

c Available in two versions: top- and side-mounting.

c Power from 1100 W to 1800 W allowing you to install the equipment that best suits your needs in each case.

Comfortable and easy to assemble and disassemble.

The side-mounted air conditioners feature an exclusive quick-installation system:c Two retractable

handles facilitate the installation of the air conditioner by a single operator.

c They have an exclusive quick-fixing system without screws that facilitates mounting

c Fast access to the inside makes unit cleaning and maintenance easy.

c Its design renders fi lters unnecessary in most cases. It is possible to install a fi lter in the exterior circuit for particularly polluted atmospheres.

The inside and outside air circuits are perfectly separated and maintain the enclosure’s IP54 watertightness.

Two fans guarantee air circulation in each of the circuits:

c Recirculation fan for air inside the enclosure. The internal circuit fan is always on, thereby maintaining a uniform temperature inside the enclosure and preventing hot spots.

Electronic regulation provides:

c Precise control of the operating temperature:

– Start-up of the compressor at +1 °C above the preset temperature.

– Switching off of the compressor at -5 °C below the preset temperature.

c Door contact management.

c Manual alarm reset.c Manual rearming of the

alarms.c Control of the idle and

operation times of the compressor.

Temperature adjustment range from +20 to +50 °C.

All models, side-and top-mounting, have an automatic evaporation system for the condensation water.

Use of R134 ecological gas.

c Fan to circulate the air outside the enclosure. The inside thermostat controls the fan and starts it up when the temperature of the air inside the enclosure is above the required temperature.

c The design of the aluminium slats of the condenser makes maintenance easier and less frequent.

on the enclosure and guarantees the IP54 degree of protection.

c The electrical connection is carried out with removable connectors supplied with the cooling unit.

One single machining size. The machining sizes are the same for all side-mounted cooling units.

The Himel heating resistors for electrical or electronic enclosures are equipped with PTC-type heating elements (Positive Temperature Coeffi cient). The use of these semi-conductors as heating elements means that: c The aluminium surface

temperature of the diffuser stabilises at +75 ºC (for an ambient temperature of –5 ºC).

c Electrical energy consumption is reduced.

The design of the profi le of the Himel heating resistors produces a “chimney” effect. Thus, a uniform temperature is achieved inside the enclosure. The resistors are secured by means of fast-fi xing clips on the 35 mm DIN rails.

The 10 and 20 W resistors are equipped with a 2 0.75 300 mm electrical connection cable.

Higher power resistors are equipped with fast-connection terminals.

Their broad range of powers, from 10 to 400 W, means that any solution is possible.Models from 250 and 400 W with a built-in fan.

HEAT CALCULATION Thermal management for electrical control panels

To air

Natural dissipation (through the enclosure walls).

In some cases, using a larger enclosure can solve the heating problem.

Natural ventilation

Providing fresh exterior air through ventilation outlet grilles improves heat dissipation through natural convection.

Nevertheless, this solution can only be used in low-dust environments when the power to be dissipated is low.

Due to the miniaturisation of the components, the generalisation of electronics, and the appearance of new electronically-based power products, temperature control has become an increasingly important necessity that must be taken into account when designing electrical and/or electronic control panels, as is being done with the IP degree of protection.

Reliability and the search for minimal breakdown rates are two determining factors in process industries where hourly operation costs for the installa-tions are extremely high; the smallest breakdown can immediately result in losses totalling hundreds of thousands of pesetas. The service life of the components depends on the temperature and humidity conditions in the enclosure.

The solutions to these problems are varied, and can depend on environ-mental conditions, the type of components in the electrical control panel and, of course, their cost!

In certain cases, it is enough to oversize the enclosure or to use fans. In other cases, where ambient temperatures are higher, heat exchangers or cooling units must be used.

Himel offers a wide range of solutions adapted to all situations.

06_084_095_EN.indd 9506_084_095_EN.indd 95 2/4/08 13:39:482/4/08 13:39:48

Page 96: Thermal

6/96

HEAT CALCULATION Thermal management for electrical control panels

Ventilation

Using a fan to circulate air within the enclosure can even out the temperature and prevent hot spots which could be harmful to certain components.

Forced ventilation

HIMEL fans are designed to remove large quantities of heat generated by electrical control panel components. This signifi cantly increases component longevity, thus ensuring the durability and correct operation of the installation.

The fans, which are easy to install and maintain, as well as economical, are an effective solution to the problem of rising temperatures in electrical control panels.

Due to their IP degree of protection, they can be used both in industrial environments and in the tertiary sector.

Air/air exchangers

HIMEL air-air exchangers combine performance and simplicity: the movement of hot air from the enclosure and cool air from the surrounding environment by means of two fans circulating on either side of sealed divider walls prevents dust and humidity from penetrating the enclosure. Warm air from the panel heats these walls, which are then cooled by the colder external air. The heat transfer always takes place from the warmer to the cooler area. For this reason, these devices can only be used if the ambient temperature is at least 5ºC lower than the required internal temperature of the enclosure.

The aluminium exchange battery is at the heart of the system. This element can be cleaned as it is easily removed.

In addition, the continuous operation of an internal fan prevents hot spots in the electrical control panel. The temperature is regulated by switching the external circuit fan on and off.

Page 97: Thermal

6/97

HEAT CALCULATION Thermal management for electrical control panels

To cool

Air/water exchangers

The operating principle of HIMEL air/water exchangers is similar to that of the air/air exchangers: the cool external air is replaced by cold water supplied by the piping of the installation itself on the industrial site.

Due to this fl uid exchange, much larger quantities of heat can be removed, and the temperature within the electrical control panel can be adjusted to below that of the ambient air.

Temperature within the panel is regulated by modulating the water fl ow.

The water circuit is protected by a supply shut-off device ensuring the safety of your electrical installation.

Cooling units

HIMEL cooling units can be used in the most severe environments, where temperatures can reach 55ºC. These units are particularly suitable when the required temperature of the enclosure must be lower than the ambient temperature, or when large quantities of heat must be removed. As in the case of the exchangers, they do not affect the IP rating of the panel.

Due to the fi lter located at the intake of the external air circuit, they can operate even when the ambient air is very dusty or greasy. This device is easy to replace and ensures that the effi ciency of the equipment is maintained throughout its entire service life.

The cooling units have an enclosure temperature control system and an alarm function which is triggered in the event of a malfunction.

Resistance heaters

There are two reasons to use resistance heaters:

c To heat the electrical control enclosure when the ambient temperature is too low for the components to operate correctly.

c To prevent water condensation from forming.

Condensation can cause short circuits, premature contact oxidation, corrosion of metal parts (particularly those of the enclosure), and it can signifi cantly reduce the service life of electrical and electronic components.

Condensation occurs when the temperature quickly drops below the dew point. This can be prevented by simply maintaining the temperature within the enclosure at a few degrees above the ambient temperature.

The design of the HIMEL heaters facilitates natural convection and ensures a both uniform and rapid heating of the enclosure.

To heat

HEAT CALCULATION Thermal calculation and mounting suggestions

The temperature control calculation consists of comparing the power dissipated by the operating components with the power exchanged spontaneously by the enclosure walls. It enables calculation of the internal temperature in the enclosure without use of a temperature control system and therefore determination of whether or not one should be installed, taking into account the required external and internal temperatures.

The following presents a simple method of making such a selection.

Printing and drawing up of the thermal study report

Once the calculation has been made, a report can be printed, which details all the calculation data, the results obtained, as well as the equipment recommended to maintain the internal temperature of the enclosure under the conditions indicated.

The report provides the machining template to scale, as well as the dimensions and electrical characteristics of the recommended equipment.

PROclima 4.0

Data entry

Entry of the data for the installation necessary to calculate the “thermal balance”.

The steps to follow are:

1 Input of the project and customer data.

2 Input of the temperature data.

3 Input of the electrical data of the installation (voltage for selecting the solution and intensity for the calculation of the dissipation in the busbars).

4 Input of the power dissipated by the electrical components inside the enclosure; if the programme is not known, provide the means for its calculation:

– By entering the type and quantity of the installed components.

– In the case of manoeuvres during operation, by reading the interior/exterior temperature.

5 Select the enclosure model and the method of installation.

We have developed the PROclima programme to facilitate the calculation and selection of temperature control equipment for enclosures containing electrical or electronic equipment.

The programme calculates the thermal balance inside the enclosure and recommends the most suitable solution based on the values entered.

PROclima software

c Calculation and selection programme for temperature control equipment for enclosures containing electrical or electronic equipment.

c The programme performs the calculations presented on pages 6/98 and 6/99, as well as the dissipation surface areas, based on the dimensions of the enclosure and its position with respect to the walls.

c Available on CD-ROM in two languages: Spanish and English.

c Minimum requirements: PC that is IBM PC 486 SX compatible, 33 MHz, with 8 Mb RAM, 10 Mb free hard drive, CD-ROM drive, monitor and VGA graphics card (640 480 pixels).

c Recommended requirements: PC that is IBM Pentium 90 MHz compatible, with 16 Mb RAM, 10 Mb free hard drive, CD-ROM drive, monitor and VGA graphics card (800 600 pixels).

c Required components: Microsoft DOS version 5.0 or later, Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or later, Microsoft Windows NT version 3.51.944 or later.

Project phases with the PROclima software

c General project data.

Customer, technical manager, name, place, and date of project.

c Selection of enclosure model.

Range, dimensions, placement.

c Temperature data:

v Minimum and maximum temperatures, possible external temperatures.

v Minimum and maximum temperatures desired inside the enclosure.

v Altitude.

v Relative humidity.

c Dissipated power assessment.

It is theoretically known or can be recreated from a database:

v Enter the dissipated power of the components.

v And/or select all the electrical and electronic elements installed inside the enclosure to then calculate an approximate value.

The thermal balance consists of comparing the energy dissipated by the components of the installation with the energy dissipated spontaneously by the walls of the enclosure.

It makes it possible to defi ne the external temperature of the enclosure without a temperature control element and to justify the installation of equipment.

c Selection of the temperature control element.

A screen makes it possible to select the control system (fan, exchanger, cooling unit, resistance heaters) to proportion with the programme.

After the calculation, the power, specifi cations, and reference numbers of the temperature control element and the respective accessories are needed. The programme provides a project summary that can be printed.

c Environment and temperature data: Maximum temperature expected outside the enclosure Temax: 25 ºC Minimum temperature expected outside the enclosure Temin: 25 ºC Minimum temperature dissipated inside the enclosure Temax: 35 ºC Minimum temperature dissipated outside the enclosure Temin: 25 ºC

Atmosphere characteristics: little pollution with low dust levels

Selection and calculation: The maximum required temperature (Tsmax) inside the enclosure is 10 ºC higher

than the maximum value expected outside (Timax). It is possible to cool the enclosure using fi ltered ventilation systems.

Calculation of the fan required:

Usage formulas:Psis = Pd – (k S (Tsmax – Temax)Flow = f Psis / (Tdmax – Temax)

Pd: thermal power dissipated by operating components S = 1.4 L (H+P) + 1.8 P H = 4.6 m2. Conforming to standard IEC 890.

K = Constant defi ned by the material used to construct the enclosure

K = 5.5 W/m2  ºC for a painted steel sheet enclosureK = 3.5 W/m2  ºC for a polyester enclosureK = 3.7 W/m2  ºC for a stainless steel enclosure

0 to 100 m f = 3.1100 to 250 m f = 3.2250 to 500 m f = 3.3

For the calculation, it is necessary to know the altitude above sea level of the installation site:Altitude above sea level: 800 mf = Coeffi cient related to the altitude above sea level (value)

In our example:

Psis = 950 – 5.5  4.6  (35 – 25) = 497 WFlow = 3.5  697/(35 – 25) = 244 m3/hSelecting from the quick-selection table of fans1 fan with standard VF300 fi lter + 1 outlet grille with standard FS615 + fi lter

The minimum expected exterior temperature is less than the minimum required temperature inside the enclosure. It is necessary to install resistance heaters:

Calculation of the resistance necessary:

Usage formulas:W = 5.5 4.6 (15 – 10) = 127 W

In our example:

W = 5.5  4.6 (15 – 10) = 127 W
