rate at which they conduct their business.Hyperthyroidism is the medical term to describe the

signs and symptoms associated with an overproduction of thyroid hormone.

Hyperthyroid Hyperthyroidism is a condition caused by the effects of too

much thyroid hormone on tissues of the body. Althoughthere are several different causes of hyperthyroidism, mostof the symptoms that patients experience are the sameregardless of the cause (see the list of symptoms below).Because the body's metabolism is increased, patients oftenfeel hotter than those around them and can slowly loseweight even though they may be eating more. The weightissue is confusing sometimes since some patients actuallygain weight because of an increase in their appetite.Patients with hyperthyroidism usually experience fatigue atthe end of the day, but have trouble sleeping.

Hyperthyroid Trembling of the hands and a hard or irregular heartbeat

(called palpitations) may develop. These individuals maybecome irritable and easily upset. When hyperthyroidism issevere, patients can suffer shortness of breath, chest pain,and muscle weakness. Usually the symptoms ofhyperthyroidism are so gradual in their onset that patientsdon't realize the symptoms until they become more severe.This means the symptoms may continue for weeks ormonths before patients fully realize that they are sick. Inolder people, some or all of the typical symptoms ofhyperthyroidism may be absent, and the patient may justlose weight or become depressed.

Thyroid Peroxidase

A test done to detect autoantibodies directedagainst thyroid peroxidase (TPO), an enzyme in thethyroid gland that is very important to the productionof thyroid hormones. TPO is found in thyroid folliclecells where it catalyzes the iodination of T4 and T3in the biosynthesis of thyroidhormones.Autoantibodies to thyroid peroxidase(abbreviated TPOAb) are produced by the bodyitself.

TPOAb can attack the thyroid and damage thyroidfunction. These antibodies are present in a highproportion (70% to 90%) of people with chronicthyroiditis.

These antibodies are also present in lessernumbers of people with other thyroid diseases.Other autoimmune disorders such as Sjsyndrome,lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and pernicious anemiaare sometimes positive for TPOAb. Sjogren Syndrome:An autoimmune disease that classically combines

dry eyes, dry mouth, and another disease of theconnective tissues such as rheumatoid arthritis(most common), lupus, scleroderma orpolymyositis.
