The Shell Water Detector capsule (SWD) has for many yearsbeen the preferred product for testing of water in JET A-1 fuelby most of the major oil companies, airlines and refuellersthroughout the world.
Water can occur in three forms, dissolved (chemically boundin solution in the fuel), settled (free water at the bottom of astorage tank or container which can be drained off), or asfinely dispersed undissolved water held in suspension. Thislast mentioned will “hang” in the fuel indefinitely as finelydivided droplets. The individual weight (mass) of each dropletis too small to let it settle by gravity through the fuel due to theviscosity of the fuel and the inter-facial tension forces betweenthe fuel and the water droplet. These droplets presentthemselves as a fine haze which is undetected by the humaneye below a concentration of 50 to 60 parts per million (ppm).The Shell Water Detector will detect these water droplets atmuch lower concentration. The Shell Water Detector wasdesigned specifically for testing of Jet A-1 as water settlesslowest in this fuel.
The presence of free water in aircraft fuels can cause seriousconcern due to ice formation, leading to filter blockage orsimilar effects with the possibility ultimately of engine failurethrough fuel starvation.

The Shell Water Detector is capable of detecting finelyundissolved dispersed water concentrations; at 15 ppm the colourof the centre is a greenish-yellow and a distinct green colour isobtained as dispersed water content approaches 30ppm.
