An aquarium is less work than you think

� Choose your aquariumIf possible upwards of 100 l,make sure of DIN/Euronorm certification. EHEIMaquarium cabinets arestrongly built, solid andsuitable for the designedpurpose.

� Choose the right position for your aquariumPosition your aquarium in a quiet place away frombright light. Your aquariumcabinet should be on alevel floor. Please note thatonce the tank is filled itcannot be moved.

� Design begins withthe gravelMix the washed gravel (2-4 mm. pieces) withgravel fertiliser and spreadit in the bottom of youraquarium, sloping up to-wards the back (approx. 3-8 cm depth). This will givean effect of greater depthin the aquarium and makethe gravel easier to clean.Lastly, cover with anotherlayer of gravel, so that thefertiliser is not washed away.

� Fill in the waterBegin filling the aquariumwith water, letting thewater flow over a bowl, soas not to disturb thegravel.

� Adding plantsHalf-fill the aquarium withwater at about 25°C, addplants and arrange themas required. You can findtips on adding plants toyour aquarium by visitingour website www.eheim.de

� Beautiful aquariumsneed excellent equipment Finish filling your aquarium,insert a heater and set atapprox. 24°C. Connectand start your filter (leaverunning 24 hrs. a day). Turn on the light unit for 10-12 hrs. per day and addcleansing bacteria to thewater or filter. Alternatively,condition the tank withoutfish for 2-3 weeks to allowcleansing bacteria to form.

� Add your fishAs a rule of thumb allow fish up to 4 cm = 1l water,8 cm = 2l, 12 cm = 3l, >12 cm = 4l, bigger fish need up to 4l water percm. So that the fish canget used to the water tem-perature, leave the fish inthe bag and float them inthe water for about 20 minutes, then carefullylet them out of the bag intothe aquarium.

� Feed the fish sparingly The fish should be able toeat the fish food within 90seconds. Your perfectpartner for feeding yourfish is the EHEIM automa-tic feeder, which even allows for snacks at thepush of a button.

Housekeeping is always importantClean the gravel regularly.For this we recommendthe EHEIM gravel cleaningset or the EHEIM batteryoperated sludge extractor.

n Mechanical filter mediaThe coarse material starts the filtration process. The water isswirled around and larger dirt particles become trapped. The water then flows through the rest of the filtration process.Various media perform this function. Particularly effective areEHEIM MECH and EHEIM bioMECH.

n Biological filter mediaAfter the initial mechanical media treatment, biological mediabegin the most important task in the filter. By the colonisationof important purification bacteria a kind of bacterial lawn isformed, which feeds on and transforms all kinds of dirt par-ticles harmful to the aquarium. The main role of the biomediais to offer the best colonisation conditions for the purificationbacteria. EHEIM biological media ensure stabile conditions inthe tank due to the best possible surface structure (eg.EHEIM SUBSTRATpro).

Tip: Never wash or change all the biomedia at the same time.This would destroy the colonies and hinder re-colonisation.For partial cleaning the filter baskets in the external filter andthe filter module in aquaball are ideal.

n Adsorptive filter media This type of filter material draws out and retains pollutantsfrom the water. These can be chemical compounds, suchas chlorine from tap water used when setting up your tankor chemical remains after treatment of livestock.

Tip: Since adsorptive filter media retain pollutants but do not really convert them, they need to be changed regularly.

n Chemical filtrationEHEIM TORFpellets chemically influence the pH valueand water hardness.

Tip: Peat expands in water. Therefore lightly rinse, notwash, before use. Peat must be changed after 3-6 weeks.Do not use peat together with activated carbon.

EHEIM filter pads/foam filter padsSpecially structured materials provide out-standing purifica-tion. Water permeates them evenly, and coarse particle resi-dues as well as even the finest particle residues are trappedmechanically. After a short run-in period, purification bacterialodge in the special foam material and ensure the intensive,biological decomposition of toxins. In addition, carbon padshave an adsorptive effect: dissolved pollutants are trapped ontheir surface and thereby removed from the water cycle.

EHEIM phosphateoutFoam cartridges soaked in an iron compound for chemical filtration binds the phosphate to the iron and removes it fromthe water circulation. It lowers the phosphate content and retards the growth of algae in your aquarium. It is free fromharmful substances. When the level of phosphate in theaquarium begins to rise again, the cartridge is exhausted andmust be changed. Only use once. For fresh and marine water.

Before the engineer Eugen Jäger invented the aquarium adjustable heater, there wasn’t any really satisfactory solutionfor controlling the water temperature suitable for differentspecies.

Obvious ideas often are the best ones. For example the aquarium heater as a rod. The heating rod is simply hung inthe water and heats it. It is true that the principle is still thesame as decades ago, but a lot has changed in the mean-time. And today the JÄGER adjustable heater is an ultra- modern electronic thermal device with the best availabletechnology.
