The County Council would like to thank everyone for making County
Events Day on March 23rd a success for Volusia County 4-H from the youth
participants, parents, leaders, volunteers, judges, committee members, and
our wonderful 4-H agent for putting it all together and making it all happen!
Our demonstrations, illustrated talks, and public speeches; photo and
poster contests; and Share-the-Fun Talent Show/Fashion Revue
Extravaganza were a success! Congratulations to all who competed (over
100 across all of the contests) and good luck to all who will be moving on to
compete at the District VIII Event Day on May 11th in Apopka.
In other news, our Horse Judging and Shooting Sports teams have done
well at their competitions recently and we would like to wish our participants
in the State 4-H Livestock and Meats Judging contests luck as well as they
compete in their competitions this month. We would also like to wish our
very own 4-H alumnae Ms. Kayleigh Baggs a safe trip as she travels as one
of Florida’s four delegates to the National 4-H Conference in DC this month.
The workshops held during spring break by the Hendrickson Family for
Photography and our Teen Health Ambassadors Amalie and Dustin on
Healthy Lifestyles were also successes! A big thanks to our presenters and
everyone who attended these events.
Don’t forget about summer events as well! Registration for Camp Ocala
is open for campers, CITs, and counselors is open and can be found on the 4-
H website. Information for other events such as Legislature, Congress, and
other summer camps will be coming out soon.
I can’t believe that this month is our last regular County Council meeting
for 2012-13! Our meeting for the month of May is election night which will
be held in the auditorium with a combined youth/leader meeting to elect our
leadership for next year on May 7th at 7:00pm. See you then! -Abby

Clubs!!! Cracker 4-H had members attend the annual Florida 4-H Day at the Capitol in February. These members had the chance to tour the capitol buildings and learn about Florida History. They even got to meet with our current commissioner of agriculture, Mr. Adam Putnam!
The See Horses 4-H Club held a fun filled meeting on February 27th with their whole 4-H
group. They started by reviewing what they learned at their previous meeting by asking
questions and receiving prizes if they were answered correctly. They talked about planning
to take a trip to a nearby nursing home and giving out flowers as well as gift baskets to the
residents there. Their leader showed them a cute little foam horse craft project they will
make and how they can use them to put the flowers or little gifts in them. They can’t wait to
hand them out! Their treasurer, Ashton, also brought her pet bunny Sweetie to the meeting
and everyone got to meet her. Finally, to finish off their day, they worked on their 4-H
project books. The whole club thinks their next meeting cannot come soon enough!
Mrs. Cash recently attended an appreciation dinner held by the Cracker 4-H Club. A nice meal was served and many received door prizes
made by the club members!
“The Samsula Pride 4-H Club would like to welcome our
newest member, Sydney Birely. Also congrats to all our kids who participated in County Events, Share the Fun, &
Fashion Revue. We are proud of you for your hard work &
dedication! :)”

On March 9th Derek & Chelsea Wilkerson, Gabby Vance, and Megan Hendrickson attended the 4-H State Archery Match at the Newberry Sports Complex, in Gainesville, FL. There were over 200 Competitors at the match, and some of the different targets that we shot were; FITA (10 ring target), 3-D
targets of animals, and Field (3 ring targets in the woods). We all had fun shooting and representing not only our Club, but Volusia County! For County Events Day, we had 3 of our members participate individually this year. Elizabeth (Our Cloverbud), participated in the Fashion Review and
she solo Hula Hooped in Share The Fun. She also entered two photos for County Events. I gave a demonstration and an illustrated talk and I have decided that I am taking "How to Cut a Pineapple" to District to demonstrate. I also entered five photos in County Events! Katie Lamar participated in Share
The Fun, a poster, and also gave a talk. Club members Derek & Chelsea Wilkerson, Megan & Elizabeth Hendrickson, and Gabby Vance participated in a club act titled "Detention“ where the teacher
meets each student that comes into her detention class and asks them why, what, and how they were sent there. But the students are only allowed to respond with random and funny answers. We earned a Blue Ribbon! But since we had Seniors, Intermediates, and a Cloverbud in our act, That's exactly
what "Share the Fun" is, isn't it? Having Fun. Our Club enjoyed County Events! On March 27th our Club leader, Mrs. Tina, and her two Daughters, Megan & Elizabeth held a Photography Workshop at the 4-H Office from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm that had 6 Kids in attendance. Everyone had a different "device" to take pictures with. Everyone had fun, brought some awesome tips, tricks,
and photos home with them that they took their self, and everyone learned a lot with this hands-on workshop. We also recently finished our Market Swine Project Books, and are busy finishing the project book cover sheets, and our project book story sheets and are
also preparing to start our Club Scrapbook!

And we visited the Duval Home on Saturday, March 30,
2013. We gave out Easter bags to the 8 residents and
took some of our small animals for them to pet and
hold. The residents really liked the animals and we
had a great time. Thanks to Tammy Dugan for
providing the Easter bags!
Hello fellow Volusia County 4-H members, I am Kaileigh Manke, your Ranch Raiders club
reporter. Our club has been very busy electing officers:

Vice-President ~ Cheyenne Iturralde
Secretary ~ Jade Iturralde Treasurer ~ Dakota Carey
Historian ~ Jany Chaplo
Motivational Leader ~ Austin Carey

Most of the members in The Critter Crew participated in County Events and Share the Fun. Three of the members who participated in
County Events got blue ribbons, and the skit the whole club did for Share the Fun got a blue ribbon! Our group act can't go on to
District because we are in different age groups but we had a lot of fun doing these events, and learned a lot as well! The members
who did their own performances in Share the Fun did really good too! Tristan McCullah and Taylor Knight both have photos that got
blue ribbons and will be going to State.
In our club we were having a little competition. We all made newspaper plant pots, and planted bean plants in them, and whoever
had the biggest and smallest would win a prize. It was a lot of fun, and the member who showed us how to make the newspaper
plant pots, Ashlinn McCullah, showed people at the New Smyrna Balloon Fest on April 6 how to make the pots! In the end Kierstin
McCullah got the biggest bean plant, and our newest member, Kaylee Andrade, had the smallest! This project was a lot of fun, and
we learned how to make a pot from recycled material that you can just put in the ground, and it won't hurt anything!

the county level will move into the district competition and be eligible to win more cash prizes. District winners then move on to the state competition in October. The 2013 theme reflects Florida's Viva 500 celebration; “Over the past 500 years, how has technology influenced Florida agriculture?”. Competitors must reside in Volusia County and be at least 14 years of age and not over 18 years of age on or before September 13, 2013. Teens must prepare a five-minute speech and deliver it. Are you or the members of your club planning on showing livestock at the 2013 Volusia County Fair this November? If so, it’s time to get your slot allocation requests in! The forms are available online at www.volusia.org/services/community-services/extension/4h/ and need to be filled out and returned to the extension office by 5:00pm on Friday April 26th. Volusia County 4-H allocates these
“coveted” slots to youth who are CURRENTLY enrolled in Florida 4-H Online and emphasizing the following criteria: completion of a Record Book, 4-H project involvement, overall 4-H participation, years in 4-H, years until graduation, and number of requests per individual. This does NOT mean you have entered the fair! Youth must go through this process and receive conformation by the
extension office that you have received a 4-H slot in order to then turn in the fair entry form as they cross reference entry forms with the list of youth given slots. Youth may request one market slot and as many breeding and small animal slots as they would
like. If you have any questions, please contact the 4-H office.
If you are currently a Senior 4-H'er and would like to be more active in the 4-H Citizenship and Leadership Program - then come to Third Executive Board! It will be held April 19-21
at 4-H Camp Cherry Lake in Madison, FL (near the GA line). Transportation is provided. The cost for Executive Board members is $96 and non-Executive Board members is $111 - but due to a donation, all Volusia attendees will be $96. Please e-mail or call Mrs. Cash by
April 9 so she can register you online by the due date. You'll meet youth from all over the state - make friends, see what goes into planning events like Congress and Legislature,
participate in workshops - there's a dance and lots of fun, too!
Good luck to all of our Volusia County participants at the annual Florida 4-H Area D
Horse Show next month in Apopka! The show will be held from May 3rd-5th at the
Clarcona Horseman’s Park in Orange County. If you haven’t done so already, your
paperwork and entry forms should have already been submitted into Mrs. Cash for
entry into the show. Youth must have qualified at the Volusia County Schooling Horse
Show back in February and can enter up to five classes in the show and have a current
negative Coggins test for their horse. Make sure to keep your project books up to date
as well as they will be checked at the event!
The annual District VIII Event Day for youth who qualified with blue ribbons at County Events with demos, speeches, talks, Fashion Revue, and Share the Fun will be on May 11th at the UF IFAS MREC Apopka Research Center in Orange County. Registration for youth who had one blue ribbon talk, speech, or demo is completed for them to attend. Youth
who qualified with more than one blue ribbon talk, speech, or demo must choose one to take on to Districts and youth who received red ribbons must arrange a time to improve their entry in order to advance to Districts. Our Intermediate and
Senior Share the Fun contestants are registered for District Events and Fashion Revue paperwork for Intermediates and Seniors is due by May 1st. Cloverbuds do not qualify for District Events per Florida 4-H rules and youth with blue ribbon
posters, photos, and Horse Public Speeches qualify directly from county to state. More information will be coming out from Mrs. Cash and in the next issue. Stay tuned!
