Dental Insurance

Before you buy dental insurance, consider whetherit will actually save you any money. Investigate a

number of types of policies before you buy.

Call your own dentist office to see what plans itaccepts. Be sure the insurance company you'reconsidering has your dentist on its list. If you knowyou need work done, ask your dentist for a list andcompare it to what the insurance will cover for eachprocedure.

Consider the type of policy you want:

Traditional -- You pay a monthly premium andhave a percentage of your costs covered.

Direct Reimbursement -- You pick any dentist andpay for the work, and the insurance company sendsyou a check.

In-Network -- You're required to go to a dentist onthe plan's list, but you might not be charged extrafees because the policy dictates which dentist yousee and how much the dentist can charge.

Consider the level of coverage the plan offers:

Basic: Extractions, which might or might not coverroot canals.

Major: Implants and bridges likely won't becovered unless specified in the policy.

Preventive: Exams and cleaning are standard, butextra services such a fluoride might not be covered.

Read the fine print:

Policies don't always agree on what is basic ormajor work. If you have a missing tooth and wantto consider getting a bridge, it's possible the planwon't cover it because the tooth wasn't in placewhen the policy started.

Is there a waiting period? Is it for all procedures, orjust the more expensive ones such as crowns?

Is there a yearly maximum? Most companies cutoff benefits at $1,000 per year.

Existing conditions? Chances are the policy won'tcover those. Are emergencies covered?

Be sure to do the math. Every year the deductiblewill reset. Add up your monthly premiums plus thedeductible. That's the amount you'll pay on a yearlybasis.

If you don't have a dentist, check the policyinformation for dentists in your area. Then call tofind out which offices are taking new patients. Askto be sure they're still accepting that insurance, asnot all of them will take a new patient.

Find more information on the American DentalAssociation's website: www.ada.org. Put "dentalinsurance" in the search box.

• The Honeymooners first debuted in 1955. Jackie Gleasonfamously portrayed Ralph Kramden in the series. But didyou know his real name was Herbert Walton Gleason Jr.?Gleason made famous the catchphrase “Bang! Zoom!”and threatened to send his wife Alice “right to the moon!”The comedic shtick has been parodied by moderncomedies, including “Family Guy.” Did you know there isa vintage clothing line in Roscoe, New York, called “RightTo The Moon Alice”?

• Buzz Aldrin is known for many things. He was the secondman to walk on the moon, and he has dedicated his life topromoting space exploration. 2009 marked the 40thanniversary of the moon landing, and to commemorate theevent, Aldrin teamed up with Snoop Dogg and QuincyJones to make “The Rocket Experience,” his rap debut andsingle. Proceeds from the song go to ShareSpace, a non-profit organization founded by Buzz in 1998.

• A few more lesser known facts about Aldrin: It’s strangebut true; Buzz’s mother, Marion Aldrin, was namedMarion Moon before she married! Buzz Lightyear, fromthe animated classic “Toy Story,” was named for Aldrin. One more for the record books: Buzz was born EdwinEugene Aldrin Jr. but officially changed his name to Buzzin 1988. The moniker came from his older sister whopronounced the word brother as “buzzer.”

• Does Mare Tranquillitatis mean anything to you? If youtook a Latin class, you know that it means Sea ofTranquility. However, if you’re a space buff, you mightknow that it is the landing sight of the Apollo 11 lunarmodule. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took theirfamous steps in the Mare Tranquillitatis, making it afamous landmark in American history on July 20, 1969.

Treatments Abound for Migraines

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please say somethingabout migraine headaches. I think that's what Ihave. They come on fast, and the pain feels likesomething is pulsating in my head. I throw up withevery headache. Bright lights make things worse.Does all this sound like a migraine to you?Someone told me there's always a warning before amigraine starts. I have no warning. I've usedTylenol, but it doesn't do much for me. What is thetreatment? Can they be prevented? -- L.G.

ANSWER: Your headaches have many of thecharacteristics of a migraine headache. Thewarning mentioned to you is an aura. The aurausually precedes a migraine. It can be flashingzigzag lines, peculiar sensations -- often in thehands -- trouble finding the right words to speak orweakness of a group of muscles. Only 20 percent

of migraine patients have an aura, so it's not anindispensable migraine sign.

Nausea and vomiting are common migrainesymptoms. Seventy percent of migraine patientshave a one-sided headache that they describe asthrobbing or a dull ache. It lasts from four hours tothree days. People with migraines are verysensitive to light and sound, so they seek a dark, quiet room to lie down.

Stress, overexertion, sleep deprivation and hungercan provoke a migraine. Some foods and drinkscan do the same. Alcohol (especially red wine);caffeine; pickles; bananas; yogurt; avocados; agedcheeses; pickled or marinated chicken, beef or fish;salami; pastrami; bacon; pepperoni; hot dogs; andthe taste enhancer monosodium glutamate are onthe list of possible migraine inducers.

Medicines for treating a migraine abound. Tylenol, aspirin and drugs like ibuprofen take care of mildmigraines. For more severe ones, triptans are thestandard treatment. They include Imitrex, Axert,Frova, Zomig, Amerge and Maxalt. An oldermedicine, ergotamine, still has a place in treatment

For migraine prevention, propranolol, verapamiland amitriptyline are prescribed if the headachesoccur often and disrupt life.

The headache booklet discusses the causes andtreatment of the more common kinds of headaches.Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue

-- No. 901W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash)for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient'sprinted name and address. Please allow four weeksfor delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Tonight my wife chokedon a piece of corn. She jumped up gasping, andlooked at me as if I should have done something. Her gasping stopped, and she could breathe. Sheasked me why I didn't jump up and hit her back. Iheard if you hit somebody choking on the back, itcould force the food farther down. Did I do theright thing? -- R.M.

ANSWER: The Red Cross has changed itsinstructions on how to handle a choking adult. Itnow recommends leaning the person forward andgiving five blows to the back between the shoulderblades with the heel of the hand. If that doesn'tdislodge the food, then start the Heimlichmaneuver.

Dr. Heimlich was never in favor of back thumps. He believed it could cause the food to drop fartherdown the windpipe -- the trachea.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answerindividual letters, but he will incorporate them in hiscolumn whenever possible. Readers may write him orrequest an order form of available health newsletters atP.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2010North America Synd., Inc.All Rights Reserved

OVER THE MOON (continued):• Can you see the Sea of Tranquility from earth? You sure can! The sea, if you

hadn’t guessed, isn’t actually a sea but a maria, which is one of the many darkspots we see on the surface of earth’s moon. It’s location will look differentdepending on which portion of the world you’re in, so be sure to look it up inyour local library or favorite search engine.

• Rabbit or man? This depends where you’re from. Many Asian cultures believethe dark marias on the surface of the moon form the shape of a rabbit. Therewas a time in England when the shapes were believed to be an old witchcarrying a bundle of sticks on her back. Some Muslim cultures believe thename of Muhammed’s son is written on the moon, as Ali would be there toreflect the teachings of Muhammed (the sun) after Muhammed was gone. There is even a part of South East India that believes the face of still-living guruSathya Sai Baba can be seen in the maria. What do you see?

• Dr. Eugene Shoemaker was a well-known astronomer and astrogeologist in hislifetime. At one point, he was considered as a candidate for an Apollo lunarmission. He also co-discovered the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. However, Dr.Shoemaker is also notably the only human being whose mortal remains havebeen laid to rest on the moon. A capsule containing his ashes was sent to themoon aboard the Lunar Prospector on July 31, 1999.

• Do you know what a wolf moon is? Or a harvest or ice moon? These namesrefer to specific full moons in the year. A wolf moon is a full moon that occursduring the month of January, whereas a harvest moon occurs during the monthof September. These names originated with the Native American tribes ofNorth America, who named the moons to keep track of the seasons.

• In “More English Fairy Tales” by Joseph Jacobs, there is a tale called The DeadMoon (or The Buried Moon) about the moon. After hearing that monsters cameout on nights when she didn’t shine, the moon came down to find out if this wastrue. She fell into a bog and was trapped. While struggling, her hood kept falling infront of her face, causing her light to flicker. A passing man saw the flashing lightin the distance and it warned him of the bog and the monsters. Because she wastrapped in a bog and not in the sky, the moon stopped rising for a long time. Thepeople wondered what had happened to her. It was a wise woman who told thepeople where to find the buried moon, and at the wise woman’s advice, the peoplefreed the moon.

• Earth’s moon is the fifth largest moon in the solar system, but what’s the largest? That would be Ganymede, a satellite of Jupiter. Ganymede is named after acharacter in Greek mythology. He was a hero and a Trojan prince. Ganymede themoon was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610, exactly 400 years ago this pastJanuary 10th. One more neat fact: Did you know that the red giant has 63 confirmedmoons in all?

• What exactly is a blue moon? Every calendar year, there are approximately twelvefull moons, but because the moon cycles every 28 days and doesn’t fit into ourmonthly pattern, every 2.7 years there is an extra, thirteenth full moon in the year - ablue moon. So, the saying “once in a blue moon” really does mean something thatdoesn’t happen very often as a blue moon only happens about every 2.7 years. Thenext blue moon will occur this year on November 21, 2010, but the next one won’tbe until August 21, 2013.

• It’s official! As of September 2009, water was discovered on the moon. But don’trush to get your bathing suits for the first swimming pool on the moon; our satelliteis still drier than any dessert on earth. However, it has been discovered that there arevery small traces of water on the moon, and that is an advancement for the ages.

"Our 4-year-oldtwins were recentlyin my sister'swedding as flowergirls. To get them

used to their outfits, the dress-shop ownersuggested they wear the dresses in 10-, 20- and30-minute sessions in the two weeks precedingthe wedding -- during activities where theywould not stain or otherwise damage the dress. They were more comfortable in their clothesafter having 'practiced,' and they didn't pull attheir clothes and fidget much." -- T.F., via e-mail

Here's a tip for a quick pin cushion: Use aclean Styrofoam tray. The pins go in straight, and are quite secure.

"When we're playing card games with the kids, they use a large chip clip to hold their 'hand'together. It works pretty well." -- W.R. in Ohio

Pizza cutters make great sandwich trimmers. You easily can trim the crust and cut thesandwich. They're also great for cutting up hotdogs.

To attack cobwebs or dust high walls, cover abroom head with a pillowcase. You'll get bettercoverage, and the pillowcase can easily betossed in the wash.

"We don't have a mudroom in our house, so tocatch water and mud on days of heavy rain, Ihave a clean plastic shower curtain that I placeon the floor of the entranceway. It was British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeliwho made the following observation: "My ideaof an agreeable person is a person who agrees

with me."

Hunters, take note: The largest deer that everlived was the Irish elk, which became extinctmore than 7,000 years ago. Though it stood a

remarkable 7 feet tall at the shoulders, thecreature's most amazing characteristic was itsantlers, which could stretch 12 feet from tip to

tip and weigh up to 90 pounds. Imagine that rackhanging on your living-room wall!

within his corn fields.

blood. In fact, during World War II, doctors whowere running low on supplies used coconut

water in plasma transfusions.

dropped by 95 percent.
