The Fox Ridge townhouses unmistakably have one of the finest views at Holiday Valley. Known for their spacious units, they are in demand for skiers who want easy access to the slopes of Holiday Valley. This unit is ahead of the game being an end unit, and in a position that affords the best views of the ski area. In the past year the owners considerably upgraded the interior of the home as well. Starting with the outside, a new composite deck wraps
about the front corner, and a similar deck in back was added. A new roof and maintenance free siding were installed. Pella sliding doors with between the glass mini blinds provide access from the decks. In the inside the list of improvements is extensive. New wood floors were installed in the main areas; the window casings and base boards were replaced with solid oak trim. The three bathrooms were completely remodeled to make each of them a full bath. A central vacuum system was installed to make for easy maintenance. As a final elegant touch the interior standard
sleeve doors were replaced with new six panel doors. The result of all this attention is a stunning home, with enough space to sleep a small crowd, a view of the slopes, and easy access to them as well. Over the years a single family has owned the townhouse and only used it 25 to 30 days out of the year. Furthermore, the current owners never rented it out. Best of all it’s being sold with all appliances and fixtures intact. For more information about this great ski condo contact Dave Blanchard, GRI Assoc. Broker at Holiday Valley Realty at 716-699-3954.

Day Trippin’: CEPAGallerySubmit Your Photo Artwork Today for Exhibition February 24
~ The Villager ~ December 22-29, 2011Page B-2
CEPA is a not-for-profit arts center founded in 1974 as a resource for photographic creation, education, and presentation. CEPA provides a context for understanding the aesthetic, cultural, and political intersections of photo-related art as it is produced in our diverse society. The gallery supports, encourages, and funds the projects of both established and emergent visual artists, and is committed to supporting artists from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in cultural spaces. CEPA also functions as a research and education center for the exploration of new technologies in the photographic arts. Programs include exhibitions; a guest lecture series which invites artists, critics, and curators to discuss their work; an artist project program which presents installations and publishes artist books; a darkroom and computer imaging facility; a public art program which
features exhibitions in public transit vehicles and stations; an independent film forum; artist residencies; and grant support for artists. CEPA’s scope is international, providing a forum for artists and curators throughout the world. At the same time, CEPA supports and exhibits the work of artists in the Western New York region, which we define as Allegheny, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming counties and the territories of the Tuscarora and Seneca Nations. Exhibition Dates: February 4 - March 17, 2012. Submissions can be dropped off at CEPA during regular business hours (M-F 10am-5pm, Sat 12-4pm) or by appointment, starting Monday, January 3, 2012 and are due by 4pm, Saturday, January 28, 2012. This year’s Juror will be Michael Beam. Michael Beam is currently Curator of Collections and Exhibitions
at the Castellani Art Museum, Niagara University, New York as well as Adjunct Faculty in the Fine Arts Department. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale with concentrations in contemporary art theory and painting and a Bachelors of Fine Arts from California University of Pennsylvania. Beam has eighteen years experience as a museum professional. Before relocating to the Castellani Art Museum, he served as the Director of Visual Arts at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, Mitchell Museum and Sculpture Park, Mt. Vernon, Illinois. In addition, he held positions in the exhibitions departments at both the Missouri Historical Society Museum and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. Prior to relocating to the Midwest, Beam worked in the curatorial and exhibitions departments of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Exhibition Dates: This year CEPA will continue its tradition of awarding 2 EXHIBITION AWARDS. Exhibition Awards recognize those artists who demonstrate an elevated level of artistic maturity and skill in their work. The winners will receive a solo exhibit of their work in the 2012/13 exhibition year. To be considered for an EXHIBITION AWARD artists must submit 10 slides or images on CD, a slide script, an artist statement, and an artist resume with their Members’ Show artwork submission. This facet of the Members’ Exhibition is open to all artists. It is an option and does not affect regular submissions to the exhibit. Other awards including “Best In Show” will also be awarded. All current, new, and renewing members of CEPA are invited to participate. All members may submit 1 piece of photo-related art for inclusion. Please Contact CEPA Gallery at 716-856-2717 or email at [email protected].
The gallery supports, encourages, and funds the projects of both established and emergent visual artists, and is committed to supporting artists from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in cultural spaces. CEPA Gallery is located at 617 Main Street, in Buffalo, NY.

Santa Helps Travelers on 86Santa Took a Break and Helped Travelers at I-86 Rest Area
( Bemus Point , NY ) - Santa surprises travelers stopping at the Chautauqua Lake Rest Area, off the eastbound lane on Interstate 86, a few miles past the Chautauqua Lake Bridge . Being caught up on his Christmas duties, Ole Saint Nick (volunteer Patrick Harvey) can be seen around this time of year Sundays as he volunteers at the Information Center . As the Information Center winds down for 2011, the volunteers staffing the information window reflect on the tourists and travelers they have assisted over the year, helping them locate area businesses, attractions and activities. Many of the volunteers are Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) members. On an annual basis, an average of 48,000 tourists and travelers

receive information, and more than 150,000 people utilize the rest area. Over the past Columbus Day weekend, 1,094 travelers and tourists had contact with volunteers or picked up material from the information center. Travelers received a wonderful gift this year from the State of New York . The eastbound lanes of I – 86 from the Pennsylvania line to the Chautauqua Lake Bridge is now completely reconstructed. The result is the entire length of highway leading to the rest area is now smooth traveling. The Information Center at the Chautauqua Lake Rest Area is managed by the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau and staffed seven days a week throughout the year by 35 regular and occasional volunteers.

The Tamarack Club, which opened its doors two years ago this past December, has created a new level lodging in the Ellicottville region. For those of you not familiar with this facility, the Tamarack Club is a luxury condominium hotel adjacent to the Holiday Valley’s Clubhouse Chalet. The Tamarack Club is situated at the base of several Holiday Valley chairlifts and a championship golf course for year round enjoyment and convenience. It’s close to the Children’s Ski School and the Day Care Center. In the summer, guests get a great view of Holiday Valley’s Double Black Diamond 18-hole golf course and the three-pool complex. Terry Elsemore is a development partner with Holiday Valley and takes a keen interest in his work. He runs all the sales and marketing associated with the fractional ownership feature of the Tamarack Club, which allows purchasers the option to purchase a one-fifth share of a fully furnished residential unit. Fractional owners can either occupy or rent their unit every fifth week or exchange to over
4,000 resorts worldwide through the RCI exchange network. The arrangement has proven to be a popular one, and one which Elsemore is very familiar. “I’ve been doing this for about 24 years and the Tamarack Club is my fourteenth project of this type.” He’s actually been on the job five years since the last Fall Fest, when the project was first introduced. Elsemore explains the growth of the fractional program. “There were 395 total fractions available. And we have fewer than thirty fractions left. We anticipate being sold out by February 2012.” He went on to explain that fractional guests, “own every fifth week forever”. It’s a more logical amount of time for many resort patrons, since many families don’t come every weekend. They have children in sports, and other things they do with their lives. A lot of the Club owners could have afforded a traditional second home but wouldn’t have been able to use it enough or didn’t have the time to maintain it” Tamarack Club ownership is truly turn key / hassle free. Elsemore is quick to praise the quality of the Tamarack Club. “It’s probably the highest quality accommodations in
terms of service, amenities and location in the entire region. He added that the Tamarack Club was a $40-million project. “Another interesting thing that has happened within the last two months, we sold thirty additional fractions back to existing owners. That is, the current owners came back and bought thirty more fractions. They are obviously content with the rental income that’s been generated, and the services that they received from the operating company. They just believed it was a good value. The strongest testimonial you can get is when people who have owned since it opened, are coming back and buying more.” The success of the Tamarack Club in large part mirrors the success of Holiday Valley as a resort. “The resort’s commitment to summer activity like the Adventure Park, the Mountain Coaster, and the brand new base lodge/conference center (being built) starting this March near Tamarack” shows the commitment on the part of Win- Sum Ski Corporation to continued investment in its infrastructure. Given past and present interest, Elsemore sees continuing success for the future of the Tamarack Club.
Letter to the EditorNew Report Sheds Light on Wall Street Inequity
As a local community banker, a recent report on the financial assistance provided by federal regulators to the nation’s largest and riskiest financial institutions at the height of the recent financial crisis made my blood boil. The report uncovers trillions of dollars in secret Federal Reserve Board “no strings attached” loans that allowed these too-big-to-fail institutions to net $13 billion in profits – at exactly the same time they were bringing our economy to the brink of collapse. Once again Wall Street gets the gold while Main Street’s like ours get the shaft. The report reads like a horror story for community bankers and taxpayers in general. It reveals the special, privileged
world of Wall Street that a Main Street banker never sees. In a struggling economy, community banks like CCB (Cattaraugus County Bank) strive to serve the needs of our local customers and help drive stability and prosperity right here in Western New York. We do this – and have been doing so for 110 years – while not receiving the kind of privileged regulatory treatment made available to a handful of the nation’s largest financial institutions. While those that helped trigger the financial collapse get away scot-free, community bankers like mine face the harshest examination climate in more than two generations! You would think Congress and the regulatory agencies would not
allow such inequities to happen – but they have. None of us want to see a sequel of the financial crisis, so let’s nip this in the bud right now and put a hard stop on too-big-to-fail. The report is further evidence of why I and other community bankers across the nation will not waiver in our support of fair and proportional regulations that distinguish Main Street community banks from Wall Street mega banks. After all, we should never again let a handful of too-big-to-fail financial firms bring this nation to its economic knees, all the while wreaking havoc on local economies like ours.- Salvatore Marranca, President & CEO, Cattaraugus County Bank, Little Valley, NY
Notary Workshop at JCCNotary Public Workshop with Attorney Michael Morgan Jan 26
This seminar prepares individuals for the NYS test and provides a comprehensive view of the notary public office. Confusing laws, concepts and procedures are clarified in plain English. Examples are provided to illuminate situations that the office is likely to encounter such as avoiding conflicts of interest, maintaining professional ethics, charging proper fees, handling of special situations, minimizing legal liability and much more. Attendance is important for a notary public candidate to become fully aware of the authority, duties, and legal responsibilities involved. The class is held on January 26,2012 at Jamestown Community Collegein room 101 TCCE. The fee is $80.00 and that does include the text book.

I love this title. It is the title of a recent seminar with Master Herbalist Steve Horne, who is an expert in Flower Essences. I must say they are a life saver and an amazing support in life. What is a Flower Essence? According to Steve Horne, Flower essences are vibrational (homeopathic-like) remedies made from the flowers of plants. Most are made by soaking flowers in water in the sunlight, then into a mother tincture. The mother tincture is then diluted to create the final remedy for the client. Dr. Bach was an English medical doctor who also practiced homeopathy. He was dissatisfied with how medicine treated symptoms, while ignoring the welfare of the patient as a whole. In his search to find a gentler method of healing he created the original 38 Bach flower essences and a blend called Rescue Remedy. Horne explains that “plants have to overcome challenges in their environment, just like we do. Plants, like people, have personalities which help them rise above these challenges. Horne affirms that associating with a person with positive personality traits can help you learn how to meet life’s challenges in a constructive
way”. A flower essence continues Horne…”captures the “vibration” of the plant’s personality, which helps your own emotional energy “learn” how to acquire that same personality trait”.Distress Remedy my favorite one. It has amazing properties to help in situations of sudden emotional or physical trauma. It helps to promote tissue healing and a sense of calmness. It contains the following according to Horne’s description: Arnica – for disassociation during shock or trauma, restores awareness and presence. Star of Bethlehem – heals shock or trauma, helps a person find spiritual guidance and comfort. Rock Rose – helps a person find courage to overcome fear, terror and panic. Impatiens – helps overcome impatience and irritability, helps a person flow with life and others. Clematis – helps a person be fully awake and focused in the present moment. Cherry Plum – overcomes fear of loss of self-control and emotional breakdown, promotes trust and surrender. Red Clover – keeps one from getting caught up in panic or hysteria, promotes calmness in the midst of a crisis. This is my favorite to use on my children since they were toddlers. It is almost magical. They love it! “Keep Cool” Remedy - helpful for people who feel irritated, impatient and easily lose their temper. Helps a person be more receptive to other people’s points of view and work for cooperation rather than competition. Promotes forgiveness, tolerance and acceptance of others, and open and loving communication. Horne explains the content of this remedy as follows:Calendula – helps a person become aware of how their words wound others, promotes warmth and receptivity in communication. Snapdragon – overcomes
verbal aggression, promotes balanced communication. Impatiens – relieves irritability and impatience. Vine – helps people who are domineering and controlling to find greater tolerance for others. Willow – helps overcome bitterness and resentment, helps a person be flexible and forgive others. Holly – for those who feel jealous and cut off from love, helps open one’s heart to feeling love. Tiger Lily – softens aggressive and competitive personalities. “Find Strength” Remedy - Steve Horne describes this one as helpful for people who are “people pleasers” and enablers. Helps people who are being abused to recognize the abuse and stand up to it. Helps people to set healthy boundaries for others and have the courage to communicate openly and honestly in relationships.Mariposa Lily – heals the wounded child, helps a person feel worthy of love and the good things they want in life. Pine – for people who suffer from excessive guilt, blaming themselves for the faults of others, promotes self-acceptance and self-forgiveness. Scarlet Monkey flower – for people who are afraid of their own anger, helps a person face and accept their angry feelings, promotes honest communication. Centaury – for people who have difficulty saying no and serve others out of fear, helps them find strength to say no and serve from their own inner strength. To be continued… For more information please call Nature’s Remedy in Ellicottville at 716-699-4372 or visit www.natures-remedy.net or e-mail us at [email protected] The information found on this article is for educational purposes only to empower people with knowledge to take care of their own health. Whatever Floats Your BoatEuropean Christmas Market Cruise
BY, felicia livingsTon mcc
Merry Christmas and welcome to Ellicottville! What a wonderful time to be here! This can be said at any time of the year, but the snow, shops, lights, smiles, friends, family, and anticipation of our best season upon us makes this time extra special. As I write this, it is 4 am and jet lag from my most current adventure is still fresh as the memories. Imagine the blend of Fall Festival and Christmas week in Ellicottville happening at the same time, then magnify it to the proportions of the Alps, the mighty Danube River, medieval walled cities, palaces, castles….with Mozart playing in the background. Two summers ago I traveled down the Danube on a river cruise from Nuremberg, Germany to Budapest, Hungary. Last week’s cruise on AMA Waterways offered the same itinerary, but in addition to touring each city (usually walking distance from our ship), we also visited the Christmas Market in each city. Millions of people arrive each year for the month long festival which takes place daily, but really comes to life after the sun goes down. Each market is held in the old city center, offers a similar atmosphere, but each offers its’ own distinct magic. Surrounded by buildings and churches dating back to the 13th century, Nuremberg is known to be the largest--- and here we got a taste—literally—of what was in
store for us in the coming week. Elaborate booths were set up with lights, decorations, local handmade crafts, ornaments, and everything imaginable to buy. Surrounding us at every step was the smell of food—different varieties of German sausages cooked before you along with potatoes, sauerkraut, breads, and their famous “lebkuchen” --- gingerbread cookies 6 inches around or heart shaped and hung by ribbons. This is all washed down with “gluhwien” --- hot mulled wine served in keeper mugs ---different for each city and the current year. The market in Regensburg known as the “Most Romantic” lived up to its reputation. This market is held in the courtyard of a magnificent palace up on a hill with lit torches to light our way along the paths. Once inside, the booths and food were there to welcome us along with performances by musicians, vocalists, and costumed storytellers. There was a full moon that night and with no lighting other than the giant decorated Christmas trees, torches, and hand-warming bonfires, the falling snow created a fairy tale atmosphere. In Melk, we toured an 800 yr. old Benedictine Abbey before setting sail through the spectacular Wachau Valley with castles, monasteries, villages, and vineyards built into the rising mountainsides on both sides of the river. Budapest is a city that must be seen at night, with its bridges, magnificent buildings, cathedrals, and palaces high up
the mountains lighting up the sky. Our ship had been docked all day, but we set sail at 9 pm for a farewell send-off as we sailed down the river and back again to enjoy the spectacular lights that surrounded us and reflected off the river while we listened to Enya’s mellow music from our ships’ sound system. Bringing us to each city was the beautiful AMALegro—a 150 passenger ship designed for navigating the rivers and many locks. There was long list of welcome touches—champagne and immediate escort to our cabin by an officer, a rose from the captain at our welcome cocktail party, ultra modern amenities in the bathroom, plasma screen and computer keyboard with free internet in each cabin. Daily excursions were included, along with 5 star restaurant meals featuring local traditional menus and free flowing regional wines with dinner. Evening entertainment included local musicians, vocalists, and Krassi, our onboard pianist who sang, played, and entertained us nightly. We sang Christmas carols, decorated Christmas trees, and received a gift from Santa. One evening we were told to leave a shoe outside our door at night, and in the morning, discovered our shoes had been swapped and a large chocolate Santa in each one. Traveling at this time of year presents some challenges, but lower rates and short window of opportunity to experience these markets make it a “must add” to your cruising bucket list. Be sure to wear what you would for a visit to Ellicottville during ski season, and you’re off to a great start. The sun is almost up and it’s time for tea in my “gluhwein” mug from Vienna! Have a wonderful Christmas in Ellicottville!
