Without the presence of flowers, any occasion will be incomplete and Christmas is no

different. You can find a variety of flowers that are popular gifts or can be used for

decoration on the day of Christmas.

The Poinsettia is presumably the most renowned Christmas flower around the world. 'Flower of the Holy Night', 'Flame Leaf', 'Christmas flower' and 'Lobster flower' are all names used to describe this stunning flower. They are considered a universal symbol for Christmas.

The Christmas Cactus is the second most popular houseplant for the holiday season. Since the Christmas Cacus plant blooms in winter, from November until February, they make a perfect plant to warm up any room during the fall and winter season.

Holly with green leaves and red berries are also usually usually associated with Christmas and a large Vase with holly branches can become a colorful centerpiece for any holiday meal.

Whether you are decorating your home with flowers, or sending fresh flowers to loved ones, flowers are one Christmas gift that will light up any room.

Spa-la-la

Does holiday shopping make you feel like you have been trampled

by a team of reindeer? Try these at-home spa solutions to ease sore

mucles and strees.

Shopper's shoulders:All the aches and pains you get from schlepping packages and an over-weighed purse. First try a few shoulder stretches. Take both

arms and lift them over your head while breathing deeply. Next stand up and lean over so you're facing the floor. Let your sore arm dangle straight down. Draw circles in the air with your sore arm. Start with small circles, and then draw bigger ones. Finish up with an

ear- to- the shoulder stretch on each side keeping you shoulders down and relaxed.

Cocktail-party calves:Those "oh too cute" spike heels make your caves tighten up after a few hours of standing. Take two hand towels from the bath and

dampen them with water. Toss them in the microwave for a few seconds to heat up. Wrap each towel around your legs from the knee down and gently massage your caves.

Family Fatigue: You love your family but too much quality time during the holidays can put your whole body into woozy feeling. You need some alone

time. Find a quite spot, sit or lay down and try a little self-hypnotise. Picture your most perfect place, a beach or mountain top. Then, find a soft surface to lay your head down. Use your thumbs and big fingers to find the places on your scalp that feel tense. Give those spots

a soft rub. Pull on your earlobes, rub your jawline down to your throat. You will be loosing up the muscles that tighten up when your cheerfulness becomes an act. When you feel yourself beginning to relax, scratch your head really fast. Stop and do it again. Say Ahhh.

The old year, we mean. As 2010 comes to a close, will you be ready to look your best for New Year's Eve or will your body and mind still be stuck in wind-down mode from Christmas day? If you need a little help getting ready to watch the clock tick down to a new year, here are some tips from Energe Spa in Cypress to help you look and feel your best to greet the new year.

Microcurrent Facial:These facial treatments offer short-term benefits for those who are looking for a ‘lift’ and want to enhance their appearance. Microcurrent facials reach deep within the skin's layer to promote collagen production and are a popular facial rejuvenation treatment.

Body Wrap: Body wraps can help you lose weight, achieve inches lost, detoxify the skin of impurities and tone the skin. They also aid in the reduction of cellulite and give skin a more toned appearance. Typically a body wrap can help you lose 5 to 15 inches during a two hour procedure.

Eyelash Extensions: The eyes. When you think about it they are the strongest component of your personal nonverbal communication. You express so much with them. Even unconsciously. So for a big night out eyelash extension are almost a necessity for women who want to look great all evening long and into the new year.

Gingerbread PancakesThis gingerbread version spices things up a bit with the inclusion of ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and molasses for a warm Christmas morning delight.

Ingredients• 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon ground ginger • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 2 eggs, slightly beaten • 1-1/4 cups buttermilk • 1/3 cup molasses • 1/3 cup strong coffee • 3 tablespoons cooking oil • 1 recipe Lemon Sauce(see Recipe Center) or 1 recipe Brandied Lemon Butter (see Recipe Center)

DirectionsIn a mixing bowl combine flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another mixing bowl combine eggs, buttermilk, molasses, coffee, and oil. Add to flour mixture. Stir just until combined but still slightly lumpy.

Heat a lightly greased griddle or heavy skillet over medium heat until a few drops of water dance across the surface. For each pancake, pour about 1/4 cup batter onto the hot griddle. Spread batter into a circle about 4 inches in diameter.

Cook over medium heat until pancakes are golden brown, turning to cook second sides when pancake surfaces are bubbly and edges are slightly dry (about 1 to 2 minutes per side). Serve immediately. Makes 16 pancakes.

here hidepresents

CLEVER KIDS

When it comes to Christmas presents, kids have a sixth sense; they can smell presents the way a Mom can smell chocolate. So here is a list of some of some creative ways to hide presents.

Fool them with the location. They always expect the attic, so store them under the bathroom or kitchen sink, or in the laundry room in brown paper grocery bags.

Put them in storage tubs marked “summer clothes,” or “Valentine’s Decorations.”

Place them on a high shelf in a linen closet.

Hide them in suitcases stored in the attic. Or use the empty Christmas ornament storage boxes and tubs to store the presents.

Place small gifts inside an old purse, plastic bag or briefcase, and hang it in a closet in a spare bedroom that is not used very often.

Office conference rooms are rarely ever visited by kids. Leave your gifts at work.

BESTGIFTS

FORTEACHERS

1. gift Cards You're almost guarenteed that any gift card will be appreciated. Maybe one to a local coffehouse, a bookstore, or restaurant.

2. Homemade FoodPlace some homemade goodies in a pretty dish that the teacher can keep. Any salsa, cookies, fresh bread or spiced pickles are especially nice.

3. A Thank-You note. A handwritten letter from you and your child expressing how much the teacher means to both of you may be the most appreciated gift of all. Type up a letter with similar sentiments supporting the teacher's work and give it to the school principal.

At a time when the world is short on causes for celebration, here is a candidate:

This soft spoken wife and mother of three is what many would coin a "super-acheiver", though Letty would never use that term herself. To her, what she does in her normal day is ........ well ...... just normal

Letty Fischler

Can anyone really do it all? Well, no, of course not. But Letty manages to juggle a part-time career, is involved in numerous community groups, stays abreast of everyone’s homework and attend every child’s after school

event in addition to having sparkling bathrooms and floors and folding and putting away all the laundry. For her down-time, Letty runs. Not just a jog around the block, but state-wide marathons.

"My major challenge is time," Letty said of her life. "I feel like I run around all day but by the end of the day what I really want is just some good sleep." Then Letty said, "Oh, I also just volunteered to help run the polls on election

days. Sleep may be just a dream for her active soul.

Page 17: THE VIBE December Magazine

Dec 2010 | The Vibe Magazine 17

Letty is the first to admit that her husband Chris has helped afford her the time and support of the choices she makes to be heavily involved in community volunteer work. She has carved out her own niche in Cypress, one that moves from project to project. Whether it be managing the Coles Crossing Community Center, or helping pack goody packages for our troops over seas, Letty tendes to shine at every job she embraces. Letty says she is just “an average Mom” and does not consider all the different hats she wears each day to be special but we do!

Letty (middle) is pictured with her family. Her husband, Chris (top right) with her children: Ryan, 15 sophomore at CyWoods. He is in basketball and a member of Key Club. Allie, 12, 6th grade at Goodson. She is in Club soccer, cheer, tumbling and is about to start volleyball. Rileigh, 8, 2nd grader at Sampson. She just finished volleyball, cheer, tumbling and is now starting basketball. She is also a brownie and takes voice and piano lessons.

It’s never too late to benefit from

orthodontic treatment! Today, adults make up about one in every five orthodontic patients.

Here’s why:

Looking Good:Orthodontic treatment can help correct crooked teeth or spaces that you’ve been self-conscious about for years. It can give you the confidence and pride that come with straight teeth and a great smile.

MaintainingDental Health:Leaving misaligned teeth untreated may lead to other dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease, as well as abnormal wearing of tooth surfaces and difficulty in chewing.

“A beautiful smile is the most obvious end product of orthodontic treatment,” points out Dr. Hanigan, “however, there is much more to the specialty that meets the eye”. “Orthodontists are specialists who not only create beautiful smiles, but focus on orthopedic correction of jaw discrepancies and discrepancies in ones bite”. Here are some common questions Dr. Hanigan hears from his adult patients”:

Is orthodontic treatment effective for adults? Many orthodontic problems can be corrected as easily for adults as for children. Orthodontic forces move teeth in the same way for both adults and children.

Do appliances have to show? There are many available options today that minimize the appearance of braces. Traditional brackets are smaller, sleeker, and some are clear. Invisalign® is also an orthodontic option that many adults are choosing. Invisalign® uses a series of invisible, removable and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you’re wearing.

Am I a good fit for orthodontic treatment?Consulting with an orthodontist can help to determine if you can benefit from treatment. After carefully analyzing the nature of your needed correction, Dr. Hanigan will recommend the best course of treatment for improving your smile.

Dr. Hanigan and his staff are committed to providing a unique, professional experience for everyone that visits the office. “With a servant’s heart, we are committed to treating our patients with love and respect, placing their concerns above our own while providing exceptional orthodontic treatment,” says Dr. Hanigan. Orthodontics is one of the best investments you can make. Why not give yourself a gift that lasts a lifetime, a beautiful smile!

This year’s holiday décor is all about the mix of marvelous metallics! Silver, platinum, gold, copper and bronze in a multitude of finishes are the perfect palette for an elegant holiday style.

Any metal color used singularly creates a stunning backdrop for this season’s hot accent colors: plum, peacock blue or acid green, along with the classics burgundy or red. Multi colored layering will add depth to any tree, wreath or garland. The hot color combos for 2010 are:• Gold, Copper , Bronze and Green• Copper, Plum, Red and Green• Silver, Platinum and Plum• Bronze, Platinum and Burgundy• Silver, Gold and Blue

Our tree will be a combination of all metals in varying shapes, shades and textures. Glass ornaments highly embellished with sparkle will be balanced by the more matte finishes in poinsettias and feathers. Vintage patinas further define the elegance of “bling” toned down.

For greater impact holiday décor should be rhythmically repeated in key areas of the home. Additional aged elements like mercury glass containers add sophisticated sparkle that reinforces this vibe.

Let’s Find a Cure for Curtis

When Curtis was born he was a happy, little boy, with no sign of any problems ahead. But by the age of six months Laura knew that something wasn’t quite right. He couldn’t sit up and other motor skills were not on pace for his age. His pediatrician termed him to be a “floppy baby” which means that he had inadequate tone of his muscles. At one year old, Curtis was still not crawling or pulling up to a standing position. By now, both parents and doctors agreed that medical testing must begin. Through countless tests and therapy sessions he was finally diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease.

Mitochondrial Disease is a genetic disorders that result from failures of the mitochondria which are the “power plants” inside living cells. They are responsible for 90 percent of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When mitochondria fail, less and less energy is generated within the cell. Cell injury and even cell death follow. If this process is repeated throughout the body, whole systems begin to fail, and the life of the person is severely compromised, changed or even ended. Currently there is no cure.

When you look at Curtis on the outside, you cannot tell immediately that he has a life threatening medical condition. However, Curtis is

far from being like his friends. Everyday life is exhausting for Curtis. Just going to school and doing homework wipes him out. Because using your brain also requires energy, he has a hard time studying. He cannot get too hot or cold and therefore cannot play outside with his friends. He cannot ride a bicycle because he does not have the muscle strength to peddle. Curtis cannot play sports. Curtis takes 26 vitamin pills each day. A simple cold could be life threatening for Curtis. Curtis has a 20% chance of surviving his teenage years.

What can you do to help Curtis? Tell your family, friends, and other people about Mitochondrial Disease and join our efforts in raising money to find a Cure for Curtis. On Saturday, February 5, 2011, The Houston Chapter of United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation and the Jackson Family, invite you to join us for Christopher’s Energy For Life Walk. The walk will be held at Sam Houston Park downtown and begins at 10am. To register for, or donate to Team Curtis 2011 go to www.CureCurtis.com. Team Curtis 2011 is also looking for “sponsors who care”. If you are interested in sponsoring Team Curtis 2011 or would like more information, please use the “contact” tab located in www.CureCurtis.com.
