Every year we tell ourselves that this is the year we’re going to really lose weight, get fit, stop smoking and finally learn a

new language… or just learn something new. And every year we get started with a vengeance, determined to see it through. But then life happens. We allow ourselves to skip the gym, eat that slice of pizza or 4, put down the book and pick up that cigarette. In this issue of The Valley’s Nickel, we’re going to give you some tips on how to see those resolutions through, no matter what life throws your way. Here are the top 3 commonly broken resolutions, along with some ways to help break the cycle.

Lose Weight & Get Fit1. DON’T go for an extreme diet where you have to deny yourself all of one particular thing. Stay away from No Carb, No Sugar, No Gluten (unless you really are gluten intolerant) diets. Other than the fact that your body does in fact need carbs and sugar to survive, restricting your diet so specifically makes it easy to fall off the wagon. And when you do, you’re more likely to binge, undoing all the hard work you’ve done. Instead, watch your portions.

2. Double your veggies. Look at your plate every time you sit down to eat, how much of your meal is made up of vegetables? Rice, tortillas, pasta, potatoes and bread... take what you would normally put on your plate, and cut it in half. Fill in the space with extra veggies and protein.

3. Read the ingredients. Every time you shop, start looking at the ingredients. If you can’t identify or pronounce 75% of the ingredients, then you probably shouldn’t be putting it in your body. Also, when the ingredient list looks like a mini novel, put it back. The shorter the list and more recognizable the ingredients, the less it’s been processed, meaning it’s food your body will actually recognize.

4. Lift Weights. The most common misconception is that cardio is the best way to shed weight. Wrong. Lifting weights keeps your metabolism burning up to 36 hrs after your workout. Larger muscles also burn more calories and fat while resting, allowing you to lose the fat even while you’re sleeping. Cardio does encourage fat loss, but it encourages muscle loss as well.

5. Sleep more. Turn off your phone, the iPad, laptop, TV about half an hour before you normally ‘go to sleep’. Most of us lie down for the night and get caught answering one more email, scrolling through social media, or watching the last half of a movie we’ve seen a thousand times… keeping us awake for an hour longer than we originally intended. If you’re working out regularly, you’ll need all the sleep you can get to help your body rebuild itself before the next session.

Stop Smoking1. Switch Brands. This may sound like blasphemy, but it will help if you’re serious about quitting. Find a brand that’s all-natural, like American Spirit. Their tobacco doesn’t have any chemical additives that help feed your addiction. They will be more expensive, but they also burn slower meaning that 1 cigarette can go a long way. All natural tobacco burns cleaner, giving you just the nicotine while your body detoxes all those additives from other brands that help keep you addicted.

2. Break Habits. Smoking is just as much ritual as it is about needing a ‘fix’. Waking up, with a cup of coffee, after a meal, with a drink, driving… the list goes on. If you’re going to quit, you’re going to smoke less… but when should you? If you smoke after every meal, do it only after your biggest meal of the day. Try waiting until the drive is over before having a smoke. Change up your routine, don’t fall in to the same old habits of reaching for the pack at every opportune moment.

3. Get an E-Cig. These are extremely helpful in satisfying both the craving and the ‘feeling’ of smoking. Part of what makes the patch or gum unsuccessful, is that it requires you to give up the feeling of smoking immediately. E-cigs not only give you the nicotine you need, but they also give you a similar sensation to smoking. It helps to make the transition a little smoother.

4. Spend time with non-smokers. One of the hardest things about quitting is when your friends are still smoking. This makes it almost impossible to break those ’smoker’ habits. Surrounding yourself with non-smokers will not only help with this, but you’ll start to notice how much better your clothes, hair and car will smell.

5. Get to the gym. Working out and getting fit will change how you feel about smoking. Whether you’re playing a sport, running or cycling, doing anything cardio related will help you not only rebuild your lungs, it will give you a sense of confidence about your health. It will help change your perspective about that cigarette you’re tempted in smoking.

Learn Something New1. Baby steps. Take in a little bit at a time, spending only a couple hours a day (at most) getting to the next chapter, or level in your new subject. You’ll keep the excitement going if you pace yourself.

2. Get Online. If you want to learn to code try www.CodeAcademy.com for learning the language to build websites and apps - Free. To learn a new language, try www.Babbel.com - Free for many of the lessons, affordable membership for full access. To learn just about anything technology and business related, try www.Lynda.com. They have a great library spanning across many different subjects available for a low monthly subscription.

3. Sign up for a class. If you work better in a group envorinment, committing to a weekly course might be right for you. Nowadays, many classes are offered more times during the week, including nights and weekends to make them more accessible.

4. Learn with a friend. Nothing helps you to stay on track than when you have a friend to encourage you along the way. You can take turns being each other’s voice of reason when one of you feels like skipping a class or taking a detour.

5. Put it in to Practice. If you’re learning to code, build a website. If you’re learning a language, try replacing English with newly learned words for common day items around your house. The point is that learning the theory isn’t everything, if you want the information to stick and become useful, then put it in to practice.

We hope this helps you on your journey to a new and improved you. Let this be the year you finally see your resolutions through. Happy 2016!

PeppermintNot just for after dinner.

Most everyone is familiar with the taste of peppermint. We find it in gum, candy, baked goods,

and even lip gloss. While the flavor might be familiar, the benefits of the therapeutic-grade essential oil are not as well known. Pure peppermint oil is steam distilled from the leaves and stems of the peppermint plant. These plants grow primarily in North America, Great Britain, and the Mediterranean area. Historically, peppermint oil is reputed to be part of the “Four Thieves Vinegar” that was used by grave robbers back in the times of the plagues. Peppermint was added to this blend in order to protect the grave-robbing bandits from contracting the plague microorganisms that killed those in the graves. All because the robbers wanted the valuables did not mean they wanted their plague as well!  Jean Valnet, MD, a 20th century surgeon, used peppermint to treat liver and respiratory diseases. The therapeutic use of peppermint oil is timeless. Today, peppermint is still valued for its therapeutic properties that include being anti-inflammatory, anti-tumoral, anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal.  It is also used as a stimulant for the gall-bladder and digestive system. Peppermint has also been shown to relieve pain. Some people use it in their weight loss routine because it has been documented to curb your appetite which lowers caloric intake. Today, peppermint is commonly used for these ailments: rheumatism/arthritis, respiratory infections, obesity, viral infections, fungal infections, Candida, digestive problems, headaches, nausea, skin conditions, and scoliosis/lumbago/back problems. These things can only be targeted by all-natural, pure peppermint oil. Please do not think that you can pop a peppermint-flavored hard candy in your

mouth and target these health issues. Peppermint candies are flavored with a flavoring made in a factory – not in nature. Candy only coats your teeth with sugar residue; therapeutic-grade essential oils cover your cells with healing properties. Which would you rather have? Because of its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, peppermint is one of the nine therapeutic-grade essential oils used during the Raindrop Technique. If you have never experienced a Raindrop Technique, be sure to call me today. You will be shocked and amazed by the impact of essential oils on your health and wellness from this one hour application of nine therapeutic-grade essential oils. The aroma of peppermint oils is said to stimulate the conscious mind. Some American doctors studied peppermint oil and discovered that inhaling peppermint increased mental clarity by more than 25%.  When you, your co-workers, or students need a “pick me up” to overcome the afternoon slump, diffuse peppermint oil in the work area. This all-natural method of stimulating the brain will not only increase clarity and thought but accomplish this without creating a sugar crash later in the day. No employer or teacher wants to deal with the crash after a sugar rush. Other ways to use peppermint oil include applying it topically (either pure or diluted), and ingesting as a dietary supplement. Peppermint is definitely an oil to have handy where you work, study, and cook! Words of caution: avoid contact with eyes, mucus membranes, sensitive skin, flesh wounds, or burns. And do not apply on infants younger than 18 months of age. For more information about this oil as well as other oils, please call me at 559-400-1352. I love to share drug-free, all-natural alternatives to better health and happiness. Fun Facts1. According to statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, more vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than on any other holiday throughout the year.

2. Why should you ring in the New Year with family and friends? It is thought that the first visitors you see after ringing in the New Year would bring you good or bad luck, depending on who you keep as friends and enemies. Keep your friends close and your enemies far, far away!

3. The Time Square New Year’s Eve Ball came about as a result of a ban on fireworks. The first ball, in 1907, was an illuminated 700-pound iron and wood ball adorned with one hundred 25-watt light bulbs.Today, the round ball designed by Waterford Crystal, weighs 11,875-pounds, is 12 feet in diameter and is bedazzled with 2,668 Waterford crystals.

4. Due to wartime restrictions, the New Year’s Eve ball was not lowered in 1942 and 1943.

5. Throughout the year, visitors to Times Square in New York City write their New Year’s wishes on pieces of official Times Square New Year’s Eveconfetti. At the end of the year, the wishes are collected and added to the one ton of confetti that showers the crowd gathered in Times Square in celebration of the New Year.

6. The top three destinationsin the United States to ring in the New Year are Las Vegas, Disney World and New York City.

7. Foodplays a big role in New Year’s traditions. Eating black-eyed peas, ham or cabbage are thought to bring prosperity. However, stay away from bad luck foods like lobsters, because they move backwards, and chicken, because they scratch in reverse. It is believed that eating these on New Year’s day might cause a reversal of fortune.

8. In Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico families stuff a life-size male doll called Mr. Old Year with memories of the outgoing year and dress him in old clothes from each family member. At midnight he is set on fire - thus burn-ing away the bad memories of the year.

9. According to this survey , 40 to 45 percent of Amer-ican adults make one or more resolutions each year. The top New Year’s resolutions include weight loss, exercise, quitting smoking and better money management. By the second week of January, 25 percent of people have aban-doned their resolutions.

10. In Italy, people wear red underwear on New Year’s Day as a symbol of good luck for the upcoming year.

11. Forty-five percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. While nearly half of all Americans make reso-lutions, 25 percent of them give up on their resolutions by the second week of January.

Give Me CoffeeAnd no one gets hurt.

The chilling winter weather often directs the sleepy eyed to secure a hot cup of java to stave off the cold, most often in the mornings just before work. Nowadays, we’re hunting down a strong cup o’ Joe mid-day, late day and any time we’re feeling the mood strike. This ritual is played out all over the world, and in that regard we all speak the same language. For some, it’s simply about getting up and ready for work, grabbing that cup of java on the way to warm and jettison their consciousness into focusing on the challenges of the day. Some folks like to gather for coffee klatches, meeting regularly, sometimes even five days a week.  In the past, I lived near the Kings River and whenever I patronized a Kingsburg watering hole for coffee, there was a group of men who gathered there every morning, Monday through Friday. This group has been meeting like this for many years, so many in fact that when the restaurant remodeled they went as far as having a wall mural of the group put up on the wall right near where they met for all those years. Such is

the culture of coffee. It’s not always about the flavor, the brew, the style in which we take our coffee… it really is a culture, a love affair. We don’t always seek to take our coffee and run, we want to enjoy it in an environment that embodies how we see coffee… warm, inviting, sophisticated, fun and comforting. Some of us like to share the experience with others, and the rest of us want to enjoy our coffee in solitary peace. Here in Fresno and Clovis are some great, locally owned, places that give you a unique space in which to do either or. A couple of my favorite coffee shops are Mia Cuppa on Olive in the Tower District and On the Edge, in Clovis. The best bang for the buck hands down is On The Edge $1.75 for a small cup with free refills. They also have entertainment on the patio on Friday and Saturday night ( no cover) with heaters to warm you. Mia Cuppa is more than just a coffee shop. Aside from the warm, vintage feel of the decor, it has different sections to suit the needs of just about every type of coffee drinker. The front space has small tables for casual meetings, or solo drinkers. The middle has private 2-person booths, complete with power outlets, for those needing a place to work while they drink. And the back is a true gem, a theater space with wide open booths and tables, complete with a stage and screen for a variety of events.

Mia Cuppa Caffe is located at 620 E. Olive in the Tower District 7am to 10 pm. (559) 499-1844.

On The Edge is located in Old Town Clovis at 412 Pollasky. Clovis (559)298-4040 n

LOCAL MUSICErick Tyler

A few weeks ago I was attending the Wednesday night blues jam at The Skyline Club in Clovis. I am familiar

with most of the guys who show up to play a few songs. Then a tall guy got up to play that I had never seen before. He saunters over, sets up, plugs in, started playing and all of sudden the room lit up. I thought to myself “Who is this kid?” immediately I knew that I had to know. I approached him after he was finished and introduced myself. “I’ve never seen you play and sing around here, what’s your name?” I asked. “My name is Erick Tyler and I just moved here a few months ago from Las Vegas, New Mexico,” he replied. We chit chatted for a bit and it was discovered that Tyler is actually a Central Valley native, having grown up in Hanford. He just recently graduated from Highlands University where he pitched for the school’s baseball team. Tyler’s back in the area, it turns out, to “start the next phase” of his life.   A baseball and guitar player all in one package. The last time I heard of a baseball/guitar player was when George Thorogood was coming up. Anyway, Erik wowed the crowd that night. There is a saying in the music business: “You know it when you see it” That ‘it’ thing has a lot to do with charisma and I’ll tell you this much, Erick Tyler has it. Tyler stated that he is pursuing a career in the music business now that his baseball career has ended, and the best place to do it, he decided, was here. So Erik came back to his roots . As I mentioned before, Tyler impressed me that night, which is saying a lot as I am not often easily moved by guys coming up in the beginning of their careers. There’s definitely a gift and talent worthy of notice in Tyler, if he continues to develop he could take that giant step into the big leagues of the music industry. Tyler plays rock n blues, sometimes singing ballads, and is mostly doing solo gigs at the present time. I had caught him at On the Edge, a coffee shop in Clovis, while they were hosting their weekend entertainment just before i sat down and wrote this. If you get a chance to see Tyler, by all means do so. I would say that with a little luck we could see him in the majors a few years down the line, not as the baseball player, but as a major league performer.

A Night at

The Sleepover Disaster, Light Thieves, and Strange Vine... Oh my!

The day after Christmas and a full moon with some great local talent to boot, produced an extraordinary event

last week. After looking over a Strummer’s handbill recently and seeing that a show was scheduled featuring all local bands, I made plans to attend, and I am so glad I did. Four local bands headlined by rock duo Strange Vine was set for the evening. The house was packed and the overflow spilled into Strummer’s bar next door. That alone dispels the myth that local talent can’t draw a full house.  I arrived while the show was in full swing, just catching The Sleepover Disaster as they were finishing up their set. From what I was able to see from their performance, they’re a post-punk-ish rock trio who surprisingly push a big sound, laced with dreamy tones. After a short break Light Thieves took the stage and were a solid rock quartet. The songs they performed were all originals and the audience responded with generous applause. Their style of music is reminiscent of 80s pop with a progressive twist, inspiring listeners to dance against their will. After another short break the headliner for the night began to play. They started off with songs reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and then transitioned into a unique sounding tune that set the night alight. Strange Vine did a version of I Shall Be Released, a Bob Dylan song, received with thunderous applause obviously a favorite tune form their fans. But then again, the applause roared through the venue after every song. It was obvious, Strange Vine has a following that loves them. They owned that stage with their mid-70s style of psychedelic rock, polished with a new age edge that pulled you in a multitude of different directions within the span of a single song. Strange Vine is composed of two Sierra High School graduates. Toby Cordova plays guitar and shares vocals with Ian Blesse who plays drums and rhodes piano.I called it a night about 1am and left feeling grateful that I had seen them. It was a special night at Strummer’s. I heard that a large contingent of fans had come off down of the mountain from Auberry to Strange Vine. It comes as no surprise, they truly are a stellar band. A very unique and powerful Auberry based group who are making big waves wherever they perform. If you want to know where you can see them next, or hear any of their music online visit www.StrangeVineMusic.com or www.Facebook.com/StrangeVine Their tendrils are spreading, and I expect they’ll go far and wide.
