Fresno’s M.E.A.L.Changing lives, one meal at a time.

The world sometimes seems like a daunting place, with tragedies occurring overseas, civil unrest rising throughout

the country and an entire apartment building of residents without basic utilities going unnoticed in our own backyard. It’s easy to think that the whole of things are headed downward instead of up. But what most of us forget to notice is that in between all of the sorrow and seemingly hopeless moments of the world, are the wonderfully, selfless acts of those who are continuously working to make a difference, big and small. In this issue of The Valley’s Nickel we spotlight one of the local organizations who is doing that very thing, Fresno’s M.E.A.L. Fresno’s M.E.A.L. (Meals Engaging All Lives) is a grassroots monthly meal distribution program whose mission is to create an experience between homeless individuals and volunteers through the power of a home cooked meal. People aren’t the only ones who benefit from their work either, homeless pets are also included in their meal distribution program. Every month they give out a gallon size zip lock bag of dog food so that pets can have a meal too. “Why?” Seems to be a question that founder and Program Director, Justin Kamimoto, keeps running in to and his answer is simple: “When asked why, I always say “Why not?” Fresno’s M.E.A.L. started because I saw people in the community I live in struggling on their life journey. Let’s face it, we all have, some more extreme than others.” The start of this organization was derived from an inspiration just over 2 years ago. Justin saw a family in line at a grocery store using food stamps and while standing in that line, he heard negative comments being made about the family because of their need to utilize assistance just to feed themselves. During his drive home afterwards he began to notice things with a different perspective.

“… [I saw] people on the corners, under bridges and near highways sleeping on the street. How could you look at that, especially during the holidays, and turn a blind eye?” Justin couldn’t, and soon after he began constructing the foundation for his new venture. “Fresno’s M.E.A.L. started in my families kitchen. Yes, it’s hard to believe! The idea was to give back in a unique way that was different than other groups that give out food, etc. For our first meal (and it’s the same every November), we made a Thanksgiving feast like we would have on our tables, with all the fixings. From homemade turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, stuffing, desserts - you name it, that was what we first gave out.” Since then the organization has grown beyond a single person and now consists of a leadership team comprised of four young individuals who happen to all be under the age of 25:

Michelle Rodriguez, Assistant Program Director, who assists in the overall operations of Fresno’s M.E.A.L.

Brenda Valdez, Front of House Coordinator, who leads day of activities and workings directly with the volunteers from the moment they enter to when they leave.

Jon Gamboa, Ambassador Coordinator, who is leading the next step of volunteering by overseeing Fresno’s M.E.A.L. Ambassador program.

And of course, Justin, who is the founder and Program Director, leading in program management, relationship building, community awareness/outreach and social media.

This past November, Fresno’s M.E.A.L. celebrated its two year anniversary. Two years, 3,000 homemade meals and over 1,000 volunteers. Among a team of dedicated individuals, the organization also gained support in a big way. “We also have an amazing community partner The Painted Table - a locally owned and operated catering company in Fresno’s Tower District - that contributes a majority of the food we cook with every month. Owners Jeromie and Rod Hansen opened up their event facility space and kitchen to allow Fresno’s M.E.A.L. to move from my home to a larger facility.”

And the way Fresno’s M.E.A.L. gives out there meals is not only simple, but also unique. “There are no tables set up, we don’t give food out of the back of our cars. We have three red wagons and multiple reusable grocery bags that carry all of the meals. Every meal is given directly into the hands of a homeless individual by a volunteer. We do not wait for people to come to us, we walk the streets to them!” It’s probably no surprise that the impact this group has had on the community is an overwhelmingly positive one. It isn’t just the recipients who gain something from the organization either, the volunteers who join in the efforts also receive something in return. “The response to Fresno’s M.E.A.L. has been amazing. Volunteers gain a whole new insight into the world of volunteering because they join us for an all day act of giving. They cook a meal, from scratch, package it and then give it directly into the hands of somebody who is hungry.”

Here are some quotes from volunteers:

“The first meal I gave to someone was to a woman pushing a cart. I asked if she would like to have a meal. She touched my hand, looked

in my eyes and said thank you. I was filled with hope that I could make a difference.”

“You can see how this experience affected not just the homeless individuals we gave a meal to,

but volunteers as well.”

“I distributed meals for the first time and the experience was incredible. The people we served

were so grateful - for the food and for the kindness. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.”

“My daughter and I love helping with Fresno’s M.E.A.L. It’s a wonderful hands-on opportunity. It makes an impact in our

community and allows for us [volunteers] to interact directly with the people we’re helping.”

If you’re interested in getting involved and giving back, visit www.FresnosMeal.com to sign up as a volunteer. You can volunteer for the 9am to 12pm shift and/or the 12pm to 3pm shift. According to Justin, it’s common for those who sign up for the beginning shift get a touching experience and end up staying for the entire six hour day. And if you’re interested in contributing… the organization is very unique in that they do not primarily want your monetary contribution (they’ll of course take it, however) but Fresno’s M.E.A.L. focuses on getting the community involved to build these meals. People can contribute cases of water bottles, nonperishable snacks like granola bars, or even travel size soaps, shampoos and conditioners (like the ones we take from hotels). It all comes back to their motto: Community involvement starts with you.

Tea Tree OilAnti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and much more...

People often ask me what my favorite oil is and why. I have tried several times to narrow that answer down

to one particular oil, but simply cannot do it. Then I tried to create a “Top 5” list and failed again. There are simply too many “must have” oils to be restricted to just a few. Instead of sharing my favorites, today I will share one that most people know. Tea tree oils is one that often comes up in conversation. In order to ensure that you purchase the proper oil, let me clarify some things for you about tea tree oil. Tea tree oil’s real name is Melaleuca Alternifolia. There are other oils whose names begin with Melaleuca. If you ask for Melaeuca and people react as if there is only one, call me. I will make sure that you get the proper oil. Historically, Melaleuca Alternifolia was highly regarded as an anti-microbial and anti-septic essential oil. Its high levels of terpinenol-4 make this oil a powerful addition to your daily routine.  Terpinenol-4 has a pleasant odor similar to lilac and is a common ingredient in perfumes, cosmetics, and flavors. Although it is naturally occurring, terpineol is

commonly manufactured from the more readily available alpha-pinene. Be sure to read labels carefully and select the products with naturally occurring terpinenol and not the synthetic alpha-pinene. Melaleuca Alternifolia’s other medicinal properties include being a powerful anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-parasitic, and anti-inflammatory action. Some of the most common uses for this oil include treating fungal infections such as candida and ringworm. It can also be used for sinus and lung infections as well as to combat tooth and gum diseases. Tea tree oil can also reduce water retention. It is also commonly used for skin conditions such as acne and superficial sores. When Melaleuca Alternifolia is used for aromatherapy purposes, its fragrance promotes emotional cleansing as well as purity. How do you use Melaleuca Alternifolia once your purchase it? This fragrant oil can be diffused and inhaled directly. Simply rub it on your hands and cup them over your face as you inhale deeply. Apply this oil topically after diluting with a carrier oil (V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex is a great option for diluting oils.) This oil can also be ingested as a dietary supplement. Simply add it to your drinking water, use it while cooking, or allow a cracker to absorb a couple of drops. This oil is safe for children, however you may want to dilute it more than normal until you determine if they have sensitive skin. Whether you call it Melaleuca Alternifolia or Tea Tree oil, this incredible oil steam distilled from leaves makes a

dynamic addition to your daily health and wellness routine. For more information about this oil as well as other oils, please call me at 559-400-1352. I love to share drug-free, all-natural alternatives to better health and happiness. For a limited time you can also receive a free oil-infused lip balm with any orders over $25. Answers on page 18.

Fun Facts1. There are approximately 21,000 Christmas tree farms in the United States. In 2008, nearly 45 million Christ-mas trees were planted, adding to the existing 400 million trees.

2. Christmas is a contraction of “Christ’s Mass,” which is derived from the Old English Cristes mæsse (first record-ed in 1038). The letter “X” in Greek is the first letter of Christ, and “Xmas” has been used as an abbreviation for Christmas since the mid 1500s.

3. The U.S. Postal Service delivers 20 billion cards and packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

4. Household waste increases by 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. In the United States, trash from wrapping paper and shopping bags totals 4 million tons.

5.Most of Santa’s reindeer have male-sounding names, such as Blitzen, Comet, and Cupid. However, male rein-deers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female or castrati.

6. According to the Guinness world records, the tallest Christmas tree ever cut was a 221-foot Douglas fir that was displayed in 1950 at the Northgate Shopping Center in Seattle, Washington.

7. The world’s largest Christmas stocking measured 106 feet and 9 inches (32.56 m) long and 49 feet and 1 inch (14.97 m) wide. It weighed as much as five reindeer and held almost 1,000 presents. It was made by the Children’s Society in London on December 14, 2007.

8. Each year there are approximately 20,000 “rent-a-Santas” across the United States. “Rent-a-Santas” usually undergo seasonal training on how to maintain a jolly attitude under pressure from the public. They also receive practical advice, such as not accepting money from parents

while children are looking and avoiding garlic, onions, or beans for lunch.

9. An average of 5,800 people end up in the ER after suffering injuries from holiday decorating.

10. The French gave the biggest Christmas present ever in 1886. It was the Statue of Liberty, and they gave it to the United States of America. (The French have one too, a smaller one, in Paris)

11. Santa Claus was a real Saint. He lived in Myra in the 300s. Myra is in what’s now Turkey. The German name for Saint Nicholas is Sankt Niklaus.

12. Norwegian scientists have hypothesized that Rudolph’s red nose is probably the result of a parasitic infection of his respiratory system.

13. All the gifts in the Twelve Days of Christmas would equal 364 gifts.

Recipe below. If you’re lucky enough to have leftovers, explore fun and flavorful recipes, available at MyCooksHam.com.

Cook’s Pomegranate Ginger-Glazed Ham

Ingredients:

1 Cook’s Bone-in Spiral Sliced Half Ham

1 cup red currant jelly

1/2 cup pomegranate juice

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh ginger

Preparation:

Remove and discard glaze packet from ham or reserve for another use.

Prepare ham according to package directions, uncovering and brushing occasionally with 1/4 cup of the Pomegranate-Ginger Glaze for the last 30 minutes of the heating time.

Next, prepare the glaze.

Pomegranate Ginger-Glaze:

Cook jelly in medium saucepan over low heat for 2 minutes, or until completely melted, stirring frequently. Set aside.

Mix pomegranate juice, cornstarch and ginger in small bowl until well blended.

Add to jelly; mix well. Increase heat to medium; cook for 2 minutes or until thickened, stir constantly.

Carve ham. Serve with the remaining glaze.

Ham is the quintessential holiday meal, and can be wonderfully complimented with some well-known favorites: Au Gratin Potatos, Sweet Potato casserole or Macaroni and cheese. But since this recipe for ham has been given a nice twist by adding a touch of pomegranite, try something that also goes off tradition a little bit.

Some of our favorites include Scalloped Sweet Potatos, which simply replaces the Russet with Sweet. Or try Green Beans with Hazelnuts, keeping the green beans crispy by sauteing them over medium heat and sprinkling in hazelnuts once finished. It’s a healthier version to the green bean casserole.

LOCAL MUSIC

Baby BeeModern Day Woman

Not many people know it, but the Central Valley is a bonafide Blues hub of artists, performers and fans

alike. Surprisingly and unlike most things, there’s a common thread of love for all things soulful among the scope of at least a couple of generations. Around here the blues is not a new fascination or trend, in fact there is a very long love affair between the genre and

the residents of the Valley. And whenever blues performers in the San Joaquin Valley are discussed, one woman’s name is always on everyone’s lips… and her name is Beverly Greene, or more commonly known as Baby Bee. Like a lot of self made musicians, her relationship with music started at a very young age. As a child she began playing drums in her church and her passion for it followed her throughout the years until she landed in ‘The Blue Divas’. Throughout the 90s the group gained a lot of recognition, performing not just around the Valley but also in the Fresno, Sonora, and Monterey Blues Festivals. ‘The Blue Divas’ was an all female band composed of the best women musicians from around the surrounding areas. However, being in the band wasn’t quite enough to fill her passion for the blues, so Beverly began hosting Monday

Night Blues Jam at Zapp’s Park Nightclub and did so for the next seven years, in which she discovered her love for singing. These days, Beverly rides solo and has just released her own album titled ‘Modern Day Woman’. And I’ll say this, she can really, really shout out and sing the blues. I don’t know what I was expecting while listening to her performances, but what I felt was amazement at the passion Beverly possesses. I remember those early days of when she first started, and I have to say that those years she spent paying her dues have definitely paid off, ‘Modern Day Woman’ is a testament to her growth

as an artist. There are 6 tracks on the CD (all originals written by Beverly), but 4 songs in particular beg extra attention. The first song, ‘Baby Bee’ is a mesmerizing chant that really sinks in, showing off the extraordinary talent of the musicians playing the instruments. I wish I could tell you who they were, because man they can really play the blues. The second track ‘Modern Day Woman’ is an achy lament to the absence of a good love in her life. Track 5 is a great tune titled ’Sweet Loving Daddy’, themed around a man she’s crazy about and that passion is felt all the way from the lyrics to the drums. Undoubtedly, the most shocking and surprising track on the CD is the last one titled ‘World Full of Hate’.

“We are tired, broke down. Yea, we are in so much pain. Somebody call the maker and tell him what I say.”

Bev shouts out her frustration over young parents who aren’t raising their children with love and discipline, and the grandparents are tired and frustrated that their children aren’t fulfilling those roles as parents. It’s a profound statement she makes without any guises as to what she really means, there’s no filter in this song and she wants you to hear

what she’s got to say. ‘Modern Day Woman’ is a real break through for Bev and I look forward to hearing her next recording efforts as I think the world is going to be hearing a lot more from Beverly Green, aka Baby Bee. If you’d like to get your own copy of ‘Modern Day Woman’ you can message her via Facebook on her page www.Facebook.com/babybee or listen to her tracks online at www.ReverbNation.com/babybee.

Music, art, entertainment… these words are not typically something that’s immediately associated with

Fresno or the Central Valley, but with some effort from devoted locals, this notion is quickly beginning to change. With the help of some talented promoters, more and more people are becoming familiar with local music and entertainment blossoming within the Central Valley area. Fresno is blessed to have a promotion company headed by Susan and Chester Neville. Their shows at the Tower Theatre in Fresno, in which their son Jeph is also the technical director, have made a significant cultural contribution to the performing arts in the San Joaquin Valley over the past decade. I met up with the Nevilles recently and had a chat about their history as producers. Susan Neville is

facility manager at The Tower Theatre in the Tower District of Fresno, and she said getting into the concert business was something she fell in to after having worked for Wells fargo Bank.

“I applied for the job at the Tower Theatre, and things just started happening that persuaded me to take a shot at promoting shows.”

About ten years ago a Pink Floyd Tribute Band called Gilmour Floyd encouraged Susan to promote their show at the Tower Theatre. With nothing to tell her otherwise, she decided to give it a go. We’re very thankful she did because since then Susan And her husband Chester have produced and promoted some of the best musical events of the last decade in Fresno. Just to name a few, artists such as Kris Krisofferson, J.J.Cale, Johnny Lang, Leo Kottke, And Judy Collins are some who have

graced the stage at Tower Theatre during that time. And the list just goes on and on… Susan also manages Three Guys Playin’ the Blues, her husband, Chester’s, band. They appear all over the San Joaquin Valley and are a mainstay at some Valley

Clubs. When Susan first started booking the band, gigs were hard to come by. At one point, she had worked three months to try to get a booking at a valley club and the manager just wasn’t respontding. So Susan came up with an offer he couldn’t refuse, she said “If you book them and you don’t like them, don’t pay them” And just like that the club manager gave them a date. After the gig was over, Susan asked, “Well do we get paid?” The manager said, “Of course you get paid, and I want to book them again here soon”. Three Guys have a great upbeat style of blues they play that’s always a good time, so the manager’s response came at no surprise. Susan and Chester Neville know quality entertainment and it’s a large part of what makes what they do such an addition to the cultural growth of the San Joaquin Valley.

If you’re looking for what Tower Theatre is up to next, here are some events happening through the month of December:

• Saturday December 5th - Adam Corolla,

• Sunday December 6th - 5 time grammy winner  blues guitarist Robert Cray.

• Tuesday December 8th - Zappa Plays Zappa

• Saturday December 12th - The Fab Four (Beatles tribute band)

• Friday December 18th - A Peter White Christmas

• Saturday December 19th - 559 Fights #41 Amateur Mixed Martial Arts

The Tower Theatre Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10am - 5pm  (559) 485-9050 or visit www.TowerTheatreFresno.com for more details.
