FX Makeup: Zombies

Not Just White Face Paint & Dark Circles

Zombies are the best last minute costume idea. I know that you could have some stroke of genius and suddenly come

up with something that’s seemingly original, awesome and cost effective… like grabbing your nearby partner-in-crime and going as the grungy Wayne & Garth from Wayne’s World, but what are the chances that someone else had the same idea AND is going to the same party? It could happen… and we couldn’t have that. Zombies on the other hand are even cooler in large num-bers and never go out of style. Plus, it’s pretty cheap. The costume comes down to simple, dirty (looking… nobody likes a stinky kid) clothes and some basic makeup. You could head down to your nearest thrift shop, find some pants and a t-shirt to shred, or dig through your closet and finally say goodbye to some clothes that should’ve gone in the trash six years ago and that’s it! You’re halfway done. Now, when it comes to makeup, you’re either Night of the Living Dead or The Walking Dead. This can be preference, time related or dependent on your level of dedication to the genre. Each style deter-mines how much makeup you’ll need and how much time it’ll take you to get ready. The classic zombie look is really pretty easy, apply some white powder (or cream) to all exposed areas of skin, give yourself some dark circles around your eyes and then add a splash of fake blood to your clothing and mouth. Or if you really want to be true to the mother of all zombie movies, then dress in only grayish clothes and use chocolate syrup for the “blood”. Tell everyone you’re an “original” 1968 zombie. However, you’d probably end up explaining that one more than enjoying the joke… and then sticking to everything because of the chocolate. OK, never mind, don’t do that. The modern zombie look is really why you’re reading this, isn’t it? OK, I won’t make you wait any longer. Getting that complex, high quality The Walking Dead look isn’t as far out of reach as you may think. You can actually achieve pretty decently disgusting makeup with a trip to

the Halloween store and grabbing some things out of your cupboard. Although, some things will take a little pre-planning if you really want to go the extra mile. Let’s start with the stuff that will really separate you from the horde:

Contacts – white contacts are probably the eas-iest to find, and the best at achieving a startling look. Let’s face it, no human being in nature has white eyes, and to look in to them is unsettling. These things usually don’t cost very much, anywhere from $10 - $20 and you can get them locally in some smoke shops (oddly enough) or online. Be careful though; make sure the package seal hasn’t been broken. And you’ll want to take some time to practice getting them in, if you’ve never put in contacts, the first time could take you more than an hour to get it right. *Tip: if the contact feels uncomfortable and slides left or right every time you blink, you’ve got them on inside out. THESE GO IN FIRST BEFORE

MAKEUP.

Liquid Latex – DO NOT use the lame tube of latex that comes in some prosthetic kits from your generic Hal-loween store. These are low quality and will take too much time and too much latex to make anything look good. The best brand I’ve ever used, and others will agree to its quality, is Ben Nye Liquid Latex. *Warning: smells like dead fish puked in to a trashcan so don’t smell too closely.

Scab Blood - Ben Nye also makes ‘Fresh Scab Blood’, sounds gross but it’s basically a darker, thicker fake blood that sticks to your skin wherever you apply it.

These 3 things will help give your version of zombie a much cooler edge. The Ben Nye prod-ucts will probably be a little more difficult to find locally if you’re doing this last minute, but if you’re reading this 4-5 days ahead of time, you can totally express ship this stuff to your house in no time. *Latex runs about $5.50 for 1oz and the scab blood is $6.50 on www.MakeUpMed-ley.com

All the other stuff you’re going to need you’ll get from the Halloween shops around town or from your kitchen. So what’s the next step? Figure out how you died. Seriously, make up a backstory to your zombie, how did you die? Face down? Bites anywhere, or are you patient zero? This will also help kick up your wardrobe game a notch. Be a dead nurse, or a dead mechanic, or that business man running away from the undead stripper in the Zombieland opening credits. … Just don’t be the undead stripper… because that would be weird… for everyone. Good, you’ve picked your backstory and you’re ready to start your makeup. Get your latex; you’re going to build your own prosthetics on your skin. This takes time, so make sure you start early. Any areas where you want a bite, scratch or wound of any sort, paint on a layer of latex in the general shape of what you want. The latex will go on with a beige color and dry clear, don’t worry, we’ll paint it up later. Wait for this to dry and then add another layer. While you’re waiting for this to dry, go to your kitchen and get some basic materials for later:

Dried oatmeal

Coffee grounds

Coco powder

Black food dye

Green food dye

Yellow food dye

White based face paint over latex, before color.

Final look: color, scab blood, and black food dye applied in all the right place, with conditioner in.

Simple latex with tissue paper supporting the mounds of the open wound.

“...Really separate your-self from the horde”

(559) 472-7182 l Stay Local l Buy Local Add a 3rd layer of latex, a thin one, and start dropping in little bits and pieces of oatmeal. This adds texture and looks like gross inside parts of your fake torn muscles. Now you need to raise the edges and start shaping the wound to mimic ripped flesh or gouges. Thinly rolled tissue or toilet paper will do more than the job to help you create what you need. Paint at least 3 more layers over the tissue and oat-meal. Rinse and repeat anywhere else you want injuries. Does this sound like a lot of work? Want something simpler? No sweat. Layer on latex in different sized circles around your face, make sure you’ve got a decent thickness. Once dry, pinch and pull from the center until the latex breaks open. Now you have what looks like boils and peeling skin. *Note: the latex may not look like much, but they will once we color them. This is what you’ll need from your local Halloween store:

Bruise makeup set

White & blue cream makeup face paint

Fake blood

Color is everything. White is not the only color skin turns when its dead, it varies based on the conditions. If I have the time and I’m feeling really morbid, I’ll start mixing greens and purples for the setting of rigor mortis, but for the most part I usually go with a ‘fresh’ look… which is a hint of blue mixed in with white. Most skin is tinted peach or a variety of yellows, and blue will pull that out if you mix the face paint correctly. Experiment here, try doing a just a small pea sized dab in to a silver dollar sized portion of white face paint. *Tip: to all my readers of a darker skin complexion, try playing around with lighter flesh toned based face paint. You won’t need the blue. DO NOT use your hands to spread on the paint, use a makeup brush to dab and then blend the paint on to your skin. This tool will spread paint easily and seamlessly without streak marks. Make sure to paint over your latex pieces so they blend in with your skin. Use your Bruise makeup kit and start coloring your latex pieces. Start with black, using a small makeup brush, dab a small amount in to each crevice of your new wounds. This will add depth and shadowing. Next, add your reds to make them rich and dense inside. The next step is optional, but try using your purples to color outside the wounds to create a bruised look. Next is all about blood. Grab that scab blood and with a cotton swab, start laying in chunks of gooey fake blood inside the wounds; the thicker, the better. You can use this around your nostrils and mouth (it’ll give you a 30 Days of Night look).

All right! Lookin’ good! Now to get rid of any signs of vibrant health that’s stopping you from being the best zombie you can be. Take the black food dye and put 2 drops in to your mouth, swish it around and spit it out. Take a napkin and dab your teeth to remove the excess. BOOM! Rotten, dirty teeth. Take a look at your luscious mane of glorious hair… a zombie wouldn’t have that. Go to the bathroom and get some conditioner, take a small palm full and massage that in to your dry hair. This will create a greasy, flat look very similar to the hair of undead person. Lastly, we need to cover your clothes and your perfect skin with splatters of what ap-pear to be your victim’s blood. This is where the green and yellow food dye, cocoa powder and coffee grounds will come in handy. Fake blood from the store just doesn’t have the luster that the guys in Hollywood have, so we need to give it a little push to do what we need it to. Adding 2 drops of green food dye, and 3 of the yellow with a spoon full of grounds and cocoa powder to 2 cups of fake blood will help it to stick to your clothes and skin. When it dries, it should have a brown residue, the coffee grounds will help some of the blood to appear coagulated and the dyes will help give it a realistic shimmer. You’ll need a friend to walk you outside and splatter you with your almost homemade bowl of blood. Wearing latex gloves, someone will literally dip their hand in to the fake blood and sling handfuls of it in your direc-tion, so it goes without saying to CLOSE YOUR EYES. This makes sure the splatters are realistic in shape and size. That’s it! Make sure you’re all dry and it’s off to the races with you. If you want more visual details of the step-by-step process you can check out a video tutorial at www.YouTube.com/stellarlenseprod in the ‘Behind the Lense’ category.

Black Halloween Punch

Like most holidays, Halloween is a great excuse to throw a party. It doesn’t have to be some massive

rager that destroys your living room, backyard and bathroom… it can be a get together at work, a small costume party at school or even just a night for 2 with a few scary movies. Part of what makes any themed gathering so much fun is the food, or drinks. Here’s a simple recipe to add to your party that will fit the Halloween spirit. *Note: if you’re over 21, try it with a little of the hot stuff.

Black Halloween Punch

Prep Time: 10 Minutes | Ready In: 1 Hour Serves: 32

As it is with any Halloween punch, a frozen “hand” adds just the right spooky touch! The combined colors make a delightfully scary look!

Ingredients:

1 (.13 ounce) envelope unsweetened grape soft drink mix 1 (.13 ounce) envelope unsweetened orange soft drink mix 2 cups white sugar 3 quarts cold water 1 liter ginger ale

Directions To Make a Frozen Hand:

Wash a disposable glove, Fillwith water, Seal with a rubber band and freeze until hard.

*Try doing a couple of these just in case one of the gloves break during freezing.

Directions To Make Punch:

Stir together grape soft drink mix, orange soft drink mix, sugar and water until solids are dissolved.

Combine with chilled ginger ale just before serving.

Dip the frozen hand briefly in warm water, then peel off the glove.

Float the prepared hand in the punch bowl for a ghastly effect.

User’s Tips and Advice:

Forget the kids... this was a big hit at my office party! Really need to get the ingredients very cold, though, or the fingers melt off the hand too quickly (you end up with just a chunk of ice instead of a spooky hand). Overall, great recipe, and so simple!

More Tips and Advice:

Use latex-free gloves to make frozen hands to float in the punch just in case any guests are allergic to latex. Freeze an extra hand for when the first one melts.

Autumn Armenian Food BazaarMarks Central California Agricultural Milestone

The annual autumn food bazaar at California’s oldest Armenian Church will salute the founding of the first

successful agricultural colony in Fresno County.            The First Armenian Presbyterian Church of Fresno will hold its 2015 Merchants’ Lunch and Country Store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 12.  The gathering will celebrate the 140th Anniversary of the Central California Colony, a 4,000-acre community of small farms settled by immigrants to the heartland of the Golden State on land owned by William S. Chapman, patriarch of the historic Chowchilla Ranch.            The harvest season gathering will take place at the Church Campus, 430 South First Street at Historic Huntington Boulevard, near Downtown Fresno.  The event will feature lunch at $14 per person, with seasoned lulu kebab, rice pilaf, cheese boureg, garden salad, pickled tourshee, fresh peda bread, paklava, and beverage, among the offerings.            Meals will be available to guests for dine-in, take-out, or drive through. Advance orders may be placed on or before November 9 by calling (559) 237-6638, faxing (559) 237-9526, or e-mailing [email protected].  The drive-through lane will be located on the Raisina Street side of the Church Campus, one block west of First Street between Huntington Boulevard and Balch Avenue.First envisioned by German émigré Bernard Marks and marketed by M. Theo Kearney, the Central California Colony was located on six square miles of wasteland owned by speculator William S. Chapman south of the Fresno City limits.  In 1875, the large parcel was subdivided into 20-acre farms, each planted

with vines imported from Spain.  Moses J. Church, the Father of Fresno Irrigation, established a common water supply for the expansive tract.     Bounded by North, South, East, and West Avenues, the Colony included 23 miles of streets shaded by cypress, eucalyptus, almond, pecan, fig, citrus and other trees.  Early-day members of the FAPC congregation tilled the soil of the Colony, leased small parcels, and eventually purchased Colony farms on their own account.  The Hedgerow and Raisina Vineyards were prominent early enterprises.            The Merchants’ Lunch Country Store will be open throughout the luncheon hours for holiday shopping.  The Store will offer such ethnic delicacies as choreg, souberag, paklava, yalanchi, bottled grape leaves, gutah, tourshee, rojik, and basdegh. The abundant produce of the San Joaquin Valley and a host of homemade breads will round out the comestibles in the Store pantry.            The Store will also offer “A hundred Years and Still Cooking,” the Fidelis Women’s Society Centennial recipe collection.  The 496-page volume includes instructions for preparing 636 different ethnic recipes and sells for $35.  First reviewed in the January 14, 1998 edition of The Los Angeles Times, the cookbook is a unique compendium of heritage recipes, Scriptural truths, Old World culinary precepts, and Central California ethnic history.            Reverend Gregory Vahack Haroutunian, Reverend Mgo Mekredijian, and Reverend Philip C. Garo, Jr. comprise the FAPC Leadership Team.  Maryvonne Gagliardi and Missy Karabian Statler are Co-Chairs of the 2015 Merchants’ Lunch.            Chartered by 40 immigrants in a rented hall on July 25, 1897, FAPC today is a multigenerational congregation drawn from the Old and New Worlds.  Author William Saroyan and A.I. Bezzerides grew up in the Church before making their mark in American literature.  FAPC is a member congregation of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and the Armenian Evangelical Union of North America.

Cool Happeningson Halloween Weekend

Halloween weekend is just around the corner and for some, it’s like the onset of

Christmas, but for others... it doesn’t seem nearly as charming, especially if you are experiencing the onset of Halloween burn out! To give you something other than a spooky weekend of shenanegans, here are two favorite picks for Friday, October 30th and Saturday Oct 31st. On Friday October 30th The Fresno Blues Society presents The Terry Hanck Band & Deja Blu at the Full Circle Brewery, 620 F. St Fresno 559-264-6323 Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Sax man & vocalist Terry Hanck is a blues n soul gem. Winner of the Blues Music Awards,

Blues Foundation 2012 Best Sax, Terry brings it home with blues n soul. It can be said that Terry is a force of nature sure to bring home the best of the blues n soul. This is an excellent show and Mr Hanck is a major bluesman in America and Europe. Saturday, October 31st A Midsummer Night’s Dream - a California State Fresno University production of William Shakespeare’s rollicking comedy. Sorcery, explosive passion, lust, romance and marriage in this modern re-telling of Shakespeare’s popular comedy; directed by Kathleen McKinley. The play starts at 7:30 pm and will actually be showing from October 30th - November 1st and November 3rd to the 7th. For more information call (559) 276-2216. The quality of California State University Fresno productions is very high. CSU Fresno’s  Theatre Arts Department is one of the top small university theatre departments in the USA and it would be well worth the experience, especially if you’re new to the college’s theater productions.

LOCAL MUSIC

The Man Behind the DrumsAnd Whitie’s Pets

The Central Valley is home to a multitude of talented musicians, which seems unlikely when the

thought of ‘Fresno’ crosses most people’s minds, but it’s slowly coming to everyone’s attention that the Central Valley is quite the host to influential musical talent. Even though many of these musicians have been around for years, it’s possible that you haven’t met them yet… Good thing you’re holding an issue of The Valley’s Nickel. John Shafer is the versatile drummer in John Cliftons’ new Band, the John Clifton Blues Band. He also handles the rhythm for Blake Jones and The Trike Shop (a rock band) or he might be seen laying down beats for polka, country, folk, songbook type gigs, or even in an unconventional sorta esoteric situation, like theremin, harp and drums setup. (If you’re not sure what a theremin is, Google it, you won’t be disappointed) I asked him if blues and rock were his favorite musical genres when we met last week at his business, Whitie’s Pets in Fresno. “Whichever genre I am playing at the moment is my favorite, If I accept a gig I also accept the musical guidelines of that genre. Every style has a correct approach. My preparation comes through being familiar with a plethora of style, which means I put it in my ear and hopefully discharge it through my heart.”

When asked what was his most incredible experience as a drummer? He replied, “I don’t know if there’s a particular event that could carry that distinction, I just approach every situation with the attitude that this moment is very important. I kind of go for that ‘suspended time’ kind of feeling. You know where I’m not watching too closely and everything just flows effortlessly.” John isn’t just a musician and an entrepreneur, he’s also a family man, with 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Between being a parent and grandparent the bulk of his time finds him overseeing the largest independent pet store in the San Joaquin Valley, perhaps west of the rockies: Whitie’s Pets on Blackstone and Shaw in Fresno. I asked him how he makes all these pursuits work? “I actually organize my professional career to accommodate my musical pursuits... customer satisfaction is my passion, whether that be my retail customer or my listening customers! Playing drums is relaxing, rejuvenating and life affirming, it energizes me” Arguably one of the best drummers in the San Joaquin Valley, John is the go to guy on drums. If you need a drummer on short notice and someone who can ‘fit on the fly’ you can call John Shafer. He can be reached at Whitie’s Pets at (559) 438-4343.

New Start, New CD ReleaseLet Yourself Go - John Clifton Blues Band

If there was one group that Fresno could call its quintessential blues band, it would be the legendary Mofo Party Band. If you

haven’t had the pleasure of seeing them live, then you’re missing out on a great experience. But we’re not going to focus on the excellent reputation of this band, we’re going to talk about the man behind the microphone, John Clifton. After 27 years with The Mofo Party Band, John Clifton is branching out into new blues territory… and just had his first CD release of Let Yourself Go with his new band; John Clifton Blues Band.

I was at the Sunday show October 11th at Tower District Records on Olive & Palm, and saw first hand what John is up to with his new project.  This is high energy hard driving blues with Fresno’s master blues harmonica player at the helm. There’s only one word I have, and it’s “Wow”, that band can bring it home. The fully packed house at the show got a preview of what’s to come from John and his band, and I think we would all agree that it looks very exciting. His new guitarist, Scott Abeyta is based out of Huntington Beach, and the guy can really play. It’s not often that we get to see a guitarist of that caliber in this part of the state. Scott’s playing is powerful, hard driving and masterful in his performance of John’s latest effort. The ever present John Schaffer on drums was, as always, the steady hand that holds the whole thing together with his drumming. The man makes the most difficult moves on drums

look effortless.  John Clifton Blues Band are touring Eastern Europe in November where Clifton has found a growing fan base who welcome his return once or twice a year. Not a bad start to a new venture, but with the skills, charisma and experience of the guys involved, I guess it’s not all that surprising. This CD is full of the emotional force of John Clifton as a performer. It seems to be proof that the man can really do it all. And we’re hoping this is just the first installment of Fresno’s most famous bluesman. If you’d like to get a copy of said new album: Let Yourself Go, Clifton’s new release, you can find it online at www.RipCatRecords.com or from any of your favorite online retail and download sites.
