Report f rom The ChairThe last twelve months has again been one of considerable progress, matched with continued consolidation of theincreasing amount of contract work being won by Himmat and the continued innovative activities that it undertakes.

One of the major innovations for this year has been the establishment of the Himmat Motor Project which is situated ina purpose built garage at the side of Himmat's premises. This fully equipped site provides alternative education to thoseyoung people who are either excluded or in danger of exclusion from school, to those whose learning preferences areaway from the normal academic curriculum and to those who are NEET. Providing professional training in motor vehiclerepairs and the driving theory test allied with personal and social development it also carries out a repair andrefurbishment programme for bicycles which are then made available to young people in the community. It has beenvery popular with beneficiaries and partner agencies alike, with participants attending from across West Yorkshire.

Allied to this, Himmat now has at last its own mini bus badged with the company's corporate identity. Secured throughfunding from Action Halifax, it is now used extensively to transport young people from Himmat & Ummid's variouspremises and has been particularly useful for the increasing number of football teams run by Himmat. These teams haveprogressed in a year from also-rans in the Calderdale Junior Football League to become contenders in several agegroups. Their reward was to go on the ever popular summer camp in the Scottish islands. One young player has beenpicked to represent Pakistan at Under-19 international level while another is on the books of a Premier League club.Let's hope he can go on to represent England - they need young footballers like him!

The programme for the reintegration of the Bradford rioters has now come to an end but has been phenomenallysuccessful and is held up as an example of good practice within the Probation Service. Many of the offenders have nowmoved back into education and employment, indeed two of them now work for Ummid - surely the greatest possibleindication of its success.

The Second Chances programme is worthy of a special mention. Sterling work continues to be done in Bradford withthose young people who have been excluded from mainstream education, many of them being thought of as beingcompletely beyond control. Himmat takes them on, nurtures, mentors and advises them and succeeds where others fail. This success has created additional demand from our partner organisations which has meant a considerable expansionin staff and facilities in order to continue to provide and maintain the quality of service on which Himmat prides itself.New, larger premises with a greater range of facilities have been opened in Bradford in order to accommodate theseincreasing numbers of clients. Additional staff, including an HR officer, have been recruited to ease the burden on Assiand the other front line delivery staff.

The homework support and study elements of Himmat continue to produce improving results in local schools while theprojects delivered for the Probation Service and Youth Offending Teams regularly receive accolades for the culturallyspecific and religiously sensitive service it provides.

At a recent visit, officers from the Charity Commission were amazed at the variety and effectiveness of the work thatHimmat does:

"The general impression, reinforced by the visit, was of a charity that already has many of the characteristics of aneffective charity"

"Himmat has been innovative in adopting new projects, and the charity has grown and developed to effectively meet thevaried needs of an increasing number of young people both within Halifax and the wider West Yorkshire area. Thepopularity of the charity's youth services is a reflection of its success in reaching the young people it aims to serve."

"Anecdotal evidence suggests that the charity has been an early starter in the provision of many of its youth services, for example by providing after-school projects, such as homework groups, in advance of local education authoritiesproviding such services."

"Due to its initial impact, and the piloting of projects before committing to them long-term, Himmat has been able todemonstrate its successes, and, therefore, gain the confidence of parents and families, particularly in its work withyoung offenders."

"Himmat has developed effective working relationships with partners within the criminal justice system and also withlocal schools and other community groups, enabling the charity to have a significant impact upon those young peoplewho are in greatest need of its services."

So there you have an important and impartial view, not just me singing the same tune that I have been singing for thepast 11 years!

Once again my thanks go to Assi and his team of dedicated staff, notably Rahat in Halifax and Joanne in Bradford, forthe continued success of the projects. Thanks also to my colleagues on the management committee, fellow trustees, partner organisations and volunteers for all helping to ensure that Himmat and Ummid continue to set new standards inworking with vulnerable young people.

Introduct ion"To get all there is, is the art of living - we must employ our time wisely, never being in too much hurry tostop and sip life, but never losing our sense of the enormous value of a minute."

Another year has floated by without me knowing and I am nearing being put to green pastures.. deja vu. I findmyself stuck once again on what to say and how to go about describing yet another very successful year forHimmat. I will reminisce firstly on the quote above as this is the only opportunity I get to sit back and sip on theenormous value we place on every minute of the day with the young people we work with. This is an opportunityI get that reinforces my belief that change is possible and is happening at Himmat every day. All the staff havebeen on their toes throughout the year with no opportunity for anyone to divert from the ethos of HIMMAT. Whichis:

"To offer young people opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills, attitudes and confidence thusenabling and empowering them to decide their own futures "

The first and the foremost welcome change has been the development of the Himmat Motor Education Project. This project is funded by Action Halifax and offers young people an opportunity to learn the basics of motor carrepairing and maintenance. Another long awaited change is the presence of our new mini bus, which was alsofunded by Action Halifax.

Sowerby Bridge High school has become a link school in the community with Himmat after receiving its SpecialSchool status in Maths and ICT. With the support of Sowerby High Himmat now has a fully equipped IT room.

Second Chances in Bradford which offers young people an alternative out of school full-time curriculum hasproved to be very successful despite the challenging nature of the work. During the year Sabrina, one of ourvolunteers was invited to 10 Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister.

I would like to applaud Jo and her team in Bradford (Second Chances) in their dedication to supporting some ofthe most challenging young people who are on the brink of being written off by society. Jo and her team arewinning a battle in their endeavour to support some very challenging young people who need a lot of nurturing, patience, commitment and time. All the staff truly embrace the Himmat ethos that change is possible .

During the year Rahat has developed Himmat's work with Asian Offenders here in Calderdale, while at the sametime taking on responsibility of supporting me in the operations of Himmat especially in Bradford.

For the rest of us the journey continues and we are going from strength to strength. Homework Drop In, Fridayactivities, Youth Centre, NEET, Second Chances, Probation Work, Football , RAP, K2 Summer Scheme and thesummer residential have exceeded expectations.

A group of business people, led by Sir William Cantrell, Chair of the Wellcome Trust visited Himmat as part of theBusiness in the Community Initiative. The group spent several hours at Himmat and took great interest in thework that was being undertaken. The group also spent time talking to the young people who were present. Thevisit culminated in Sir William inviting four young people to visit him in London.

Staff development has been the key for our success. During the year 15 staff attended Brief Therapy training and12 staff members attended Team Teach training. Bash, Jo and Rahat have completed the 2nd year of a four yeardegree in Project Management. Arshad and Khuram have completed FA level two coaching course. Hamza andOzair have completed FA Level One coaching course.

I would like to welcome Manir, Hanif, Michael, Oulfatt, Imran, Karen and Diane who joined us this year. Afterfreezing the post of Atch Ali for two years we are glad to have employed Manir who is in charge of HR and theMotor Project. I would like to wish all the new staff the best of luck in their new roles.

Special thanks to all our partners especially West Yorkshire Probation Board, Bradford Youth Offending Team,West Yorkshire Connexions, Action Halifax, Bradford Education, Bradford Youth Service , Bradford YMCA,Calderdale Children's Fund and Calderdale MBC for having faith in Himmat and continuing to support us.. I would like to thank all the staff for their total commitment, hard work, perseverance and drive to implementEvery Child Matters.
