Making the Transition to RDA
• Approach to the rules– Where to start
• Core elements• Relationships• New MARC 21 fields• Expressing descriptive content• Examples
ALA Chicago June 30, 2013
1010
WEMI
• Work: a distinct intellectual or artistic creation
• Expression: the intellectual or artistic realization of a work
• Manifestation: the physical embodiment of an expression of a work
• Item: a single exemplar of a manifestation
10
1111
WEMIDescribe the relationships among the entities:• A work is realized through an expression -
that's a relationship• An expression is embodied in a manifestation
- that's a relationship• A manifestation is exemplified by an item -
that's a relationship• These entities in this set of relationships are
all present when we hold an item in our hand11
1212
WEMI
• Work: Stephenie Meyer’s Breaking Dawn• Expression: the 2012 Italian translation by
Kim Young• Manifestation: the August 3, 2010
publication by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
• Item: the specific copy numbered 797, signed by Stephenie Meyer.
12
13
RDA Approach to the Rules• RDA is divided into 10 sections:
– sections 1–4 cover elements corresponding to the entity attributes defined in FRBR and FRAD;
– sections 5–10 cover elements corresponding to the relationships defined in FRBR and FRAD.
• Chapter 1 rules offer guidelines, including core elements, language and script, changes requiring a new description, etc.
• Initial chapter in each section sets out the functional objectives and principles underlying the guidelines and instructions in that section, and specifies core elements to support those functional objectives
• Appendices with supplementary guidelines and instructions.

RDA Approach to the RulesType of Description Required:1. Comprehensive: describes the resource as a whole (a
single unit such as a map, a single audio disc; a multipart monograph such as a kit consisting of a filmstrip, an audiotape, and a teacher’s manual; a serial; an integrating resource, website). RDA 1.5.2
2. Analytical: describes a part of a larger resource (e.g., a single volume of a three-volume biography, a single map forming part of a map series). RDA 1.5.3
3. Hierarchical: combines a comprehensive description of the whole resource with analytical descriptions of one or more of its parts. RDA 1.5.4
ALA Chicago June 30, 2013
15
RDA Core Elements• Minimum set of data elements• The RDA core elements for describing resources
were selected according to the FRBR assessment of the value of each attribute and relationship in supporting the following user tasks:– identify and select a manifestation – identify works and expressions embodied in a
manifestation – identify the creator or creators of a work.
ALA Chicago June 30, 2013
16
Core Elements
• Title – Title Proper• Statement of Responsibility –
relating to title proper• Edition Statement• Numbering of serials• Production statement – for an
unpublished resource• Publication statement – place,
name, date• Distribution statement – place,
distributor’s name, date
• Manufacture statement – place, manufacturer’s name, date
• Copyright date• Series statement – title, numbering• Identifier for the manifestation• Content type• Carrier type• Extent – if complete and known
ALA Chicago June 30, 2013

Are You Ready to Catalog with RDA?• Chapter 1 rules offer guidelines, including core
elements, language and script, changes requiring a new description, etc.
• One important preliminary decision is deciding on type of description: comprehensive, analytical, hierarchical.
• Another decision is to decide what section to start with in terms of WEMI (work, expression, manifestation, or item)
• Then translate your description to MARC 21 format.• Let’s try this together. We’ll review the records for the
Twilight saga game and an ebook.
