Congratulations to the 2019 Turner
Center Volunteer of the Year
Sue Baumgartner
Since beginning to volunteer with us
in 2017, Sue has become an
incredible asset to our Turner
Center team, putting in over 230
hours of volunteer time. You most
likely recognize her as one of our
ambassadors, mostly on Wednesday
mornings. Sue is always willing to
step up and help where we need it,
she brings innovative ideas to the
table, and showed that with her many hours of help for
our first fundraiser last fall. In addition to being an
ambassador, Sue is also a member of our Advisory
Council.
Sue has an incredible heart and a contagious
willingness to help others. Her positive attitude has
made her such a joy to have around the Center. In
addition to volunteering for us, Sue also volunteers at
Senior Ride Nashville as a volunteer driver as well as
with the Ladies of Charity.
If you see Sue around the Center be sure to
congratulate her & let her know how much you

Letter from the Office Assistant…
“Don't be pushed by your problems. Be led by your dreams.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
It’s important to take time for dreaming and exploring new possibilities. One of the
things I appreciate about our members is that they are committed to a more expansive life instead of just staying in a mundane rut. July offers so many opportunities that offer ad-venture and new discoveries.
One voyage of discovery will be the three-part film series Chasing the Moon, which reimagines the race to the moon from today’s perspective and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apol-lo landing. We’ll also be touring the TBI Crime Lab, a favorite with members who are intrigued by the fo-rensics of investigation. Tour the Nissan plant in Smyrna or take an AARP Driver Safety Class. Enjoy a concert with Pam Tillis or the Driftwood Duo. Celebrate the beach with the Bunco group. Savor a unique culinary destination at the Old School Farm restaurant. Or just enjoy the simple pleasure of hanging out with friends here at the center.
Try something new and expand your boundaries. It is by exploration, by daring, that you discover new worlds and gain fresh perspective. Take a class that stretches you—whether it’s an exercise class or learning a new skill or playing a different game. Let your dreams lead you and reach for the summer stars.
Sincerely, Candy Paull Office Manager, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center
The Turner Center will be closed on Thursday, July 4th for Independence
Day. Have a safe holiday!

Quickly Close Your Mobile Apps
Did you know you can close up to three iPhone apps at once? To do it, double-
click your Home button to bring up a list of apps. Hold three fingers over the apps on your screen and swipe up. That's it.
If you want to quickly close all the apps on your Android device, once again double-click the home button and choose the option to close all your recent apps. Be aware,
though, that only newer Android versions support the feature.
This helps conserve your phone’s battery life

Letter from the Director…
The long hot days of summer are here, and we want you to enjoy some of the fun things we have planned for you in July, please read the newsletter and sign up for as many programs as you can.
As the new Director one of the things I have been doing during my first month here is going over policies and procedures for FiftyForward and J.L. Turner (Fun, Fun). So, I thought I would share the fun with you and post a couple polices each moth so member can review. Nikki has listed the Travel/Trip Policy on the last page of the July edition please read as it will go into effect July 1st the start of our new fiscal year. Our No Show/Cancellation Policy is also printed in this addition and will begin August 1, 2019.What does this mean to members; It means you will need to use your old credits by the end of July as the policy will take effect August 1, 2019.
We encourage all J.L. Turner members and 50+ YMCA members to scan into the MySeniorCenter kiosk. If your Y card does not work, please notify FiftyForward staff as we need to make sure your participation form and Y card number is up to date in our system. We have also added a new selection in the MySeniorCenter kiosk called “Other Activity.” This selection will show up daily for those participants that just come in for coffee, chatting with friends, puzzles, picking up or returning library books, etc. Please encourage your friends to always scan with us when entering the facility for activities.
J. L. Tuner activities will be closed on July 4th. Have a safe and happy 4th of July.
Best regards, Connie Rigsby Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center
Letter from the Program Director…
I cannot believe we are already in the second half of 2019. It has flown by!
We are into the summer months which means plenty of programs out of the scorching heat. This month we are in full AMP mode! Every Monday (alternating between Turner & Madison) we will have a program for those participating, and if there’s room it will be open to the rest of the members as well. Check out the schedule on the back cover of the newsletter and be sure to check back for updates. We will also be having an AARP Driver’s Safety Course that could potentially save you money on your car insurance. This is a two-day program and you must attend both sessions to get a certificate of completion. We are also starting back up with the Open Music Jam. If you play an instrument, or want to listen to those who can, be sure to sign up. Lastly, we will also have a three-part docuseries screening in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing— feel free to come to one, two or all of the screening of this series.
As always, we also have some great day trips planned for you. We will head back to the TBI Crime Lab (please note this is different than the MNPD Crime Lab trip we took a couple months ago) to get a staff tour of their forensic units and learn more about their mission. I am also excited to head back to the Nashville Public Library for their music series featuring the Driftwood Duo.
Also please be sure to browse the section on volunteer opportunities in the Center. We are looking for a driver for our day trips & foodie night events. We will do a background & driving check, but no CDL license is required. If you, or anyone you know is interested please stop in and see myself or another staff member.
Thank you, Nikki Plotts Program Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center

• All trips require a minimum number of people which is decided by each Center. The staff reserves the right
to cancel a program or trip in the event of minimum enrollment numbers not met. Trips not meeting the

• If a trip is cancelled due to weather or other uncontrollable circumstances, every effort will be made to
reschedule the trip with ample notice to participants. If the trip is rescheduled for a date the ticket-holder
cannot attend, a credit or refund will be issued.

Conference Room every 2nd Wednesday of the month from 8:00am to 11:00am
to answer your questions about Medicaid & Care Services.
In partnership with FiftyForward Madison Station, the Turner Center will co-host The National Council on Aging’s Aging Mastery Program (AMP) where each center will host a total of 10 classes that help older adults build their own playbook for aging well. AMP is an evidence-based, fun, innovative, and person-centered education program that encourages aging mastery— developing sustainable behaviors that lead to improved health, stronger economic security, enhanced well-
being, and increased societal participation. At the end of AMP, FiftyForward will host a graduation ceremony and a certificate of participation will be awarded to those who participated in at least 7 of 10 classes offered.
Classes will begin on June 24th, and you must register in advance. Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation, FiftyForward is offering this $60 program FREE to our members
(including transportation). You can still sign up! See an ambassador if you’re interested.
