Windmill Youth Centre TRUTH The truth about

Windmill Youth and

Community Centre is

that it was threatened

with closure because

the Conservative/Lib

Dem government has

cut Leeds’ budget by

£160 million over the

last few years.

One of the first coun-

cillors to know about the

community centre review

was Cllr Stewart Golton

in his role as Lib Dem

leader on the council’s

powerful executive

board.

But it was Cllr Karen

Bruce who was the first

councillor to let Wind-

mill know it was under

threat and immediately

started a campaign to

save it.

Cllr Stewart Golton

agrees: “local Labour

councillors have been

busy collecting signa-

tures” to save Windmill.

Cllr Karen Bruce said:

“I made Peter Gruen the

deputy leader of the

council visit Windmill to

meet the young people

and then agree to a plan

to keep it open.

Cllr Peter Gruen said:

“Karen made me see

how important Windmill

is to Rothwell.”

Cllr Karen Bruce said:

“We only saved it be-

cause Windmill and your

Labour councillors are

working hard to get

more local community

groups to use it.

“I’ve already got a ban-

ner outside advertising it

and am encouraging local

groups to use it.”

Local Liberal Demo-

crats have got it

wrong on crime as

West Yorkshire Po-

lice say crime has fall-

en in Rothwell.

The part night-time

switch off of street lights

has been welcomed by

many residents as being

good for the environ-

ment as well as saving

council tax payers’ mon-

ey. As it’s only a few

lamps on each street, no

streets are in darkness

anywhere. When asked

Cllr Golton couldn’t

name a single street with

a blackout!

Most house burglaries

aren’t committed at

night, but during the day

when people are out at

work.

Despite brutal govern-

ment cuts Labour coun-

cillors have voted to in-

vest in keeping police on

the streets protecting

communities.

Instead of being tough

on crime Lib Dems want

to reduce or abolish pris-

on sentences for some

drug and other crimes.

Cllr Karen Bruce said:

“It’s great news crime

has fallen in Rothwell

ward, but I’m worried a

re-elected Tory/Lib Dem

government would cut

police on the streets.”
