I recently heard a client referring to his Tradebank Dollars as “funny money”. Over the years, I have heard other references to “points” or “Monopoly money”. It always makes me cringe. The use of that language implies disrespect for the integrity of our Trade Exchange and the barter industry in general. Furthermore, that language hits my “hot button” because it also implies a lack of knowledge and appreciation regarding the value of barter revenue and the effort involved in preserving that value. An insinuation like that hits the heart of those of us who have watched and been instrumental in changing barter from a surreptitious “underground economy” to an internationally accepted, legally recognized, strategic way to boost sales, conserve cash and improve a company’s bottom line.

As a result of the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982 (TEFRA) a trade dollar and a cash dollar are the same in the eyes of the IRS. Under TEFRA, barter exchanges are legally designated custodians of the financial records of their clients. As such, barter exchanges are third-party record keepers and are required to file Internal Revenue Service 1099-B forms which report the barter income of each client.

I entered into the barter industry in 1984; the concept of barter exchanges and the burgeoning barter industry were approximately six years old at the time. The passage of TEFRA was viewed as a “right of passage” for the integrity of the

barter industry. This legislation was a victory for the pioneers of the early barter exchanges and for clients across the country at that time and in the future. No longer were clients or trade exchange owners subject to IRS fishing expeditions/audits whereby the IRS sought to find the hidden or unreported barter income that they could tax. This legislation provided the validation of all who were trading and facilitating the barter transactions. TEFRA took away any stigma of barter. The passage of TEFRA meant that barter income was viewed as cash income and bartering should be considered a marketing/financial tool—not a tax tool. Trade dollars were no longer “funny money”, “points” or “Monopoly money”.

At Tradebank we take our role in preserving the integrity of our Tradebank Dollars very seriously. We ensure that you have an extensive variety of trading opportunities both locally and across our trading network. We have instituted trading protocols to preserve the value of Tradebank Dollars. In doing so, we avoid the pitfalls of inflation we see in other barter companies - too many folks with unspendable trade dollars who stop trading, rampant over pricing and too few products and services available to purchase.

In maintaining these high standards we know we are not for everyone. We seek and do business with business owners who understand and appreciate Tradebank Dollars and have respect for the purchasing power the barter revenue creates.

Speaking From Experience

Apparently, most of our clients want the same thing as trading activity has increased significantly. For the past 20 months each month has broken the record for that month the year prior. Tradebank’s addition of new clients is equally impressive.

Providing the platform for Tradebank Dollars to expand cashless commerce, enhance your personal lifestyle and improve your bottom line remain the utmost importance to our Corporate staff, Regional Owners, Tradebank Brokers, and Sales Agents. We are proud that our client base agrees.

Marcy S. Yaffe is the Vice President of Trade and National Training Director of Tradebank International. She has over 26 years experience brokering barter transactions.

services which are sold 100% trade at competitive prices. The policies and procedures we have in place ensure fair trading and strengthen our dollar.

I read about an interesting study in the book Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely. It showed that it is human nature to treat things that aren’t cash -- even if they represent cash -- with less integrity. I have found that Tradebank clients appreciate and value their Tradebank sales and purchasing opportunities and the natural tendency Ariely speaks of does not manifest itself much within our trading network.

Tradebank places a strong emphasis on helping our clients understand the “big picture” of the benefits of barter and why it is so critical to the success of their company for business owners and their staff to provide good customer service and follow Tradebank’s policies and procedures. In return, Tradebank offers a wide array of quality trading opportunities that is unparrelled in the barter industry. A good trader is one who is honest, consistent, does good business and also understands and works within the Tradebank system. Good traders are what make our currency strong and give everyone an extensive selection of trading opportunities.

Marla Dufek is a Tradebank Broker for Tradebank of Metro AtlantaMY: Tradebank continues to grow year after year. We are doing more trading volume this year and have more new clients than in any previous year and that has been happening year after year for the past 23 years.

We are also seeing a trend that more and more clients who have had previous barter experiences with another exchange are now choosing to do business through Tradebank. From your experiences working with Tradebank clients in your region and across the Tradebank network, what do you see as the basis for everyone’s trading success?

MD: One of the things that makes me proud about being a Tradebank Broker is the value of the Tradebank Dollar. As in any economy, many factors contribute to making our Tradebank Dollar strong. The most obvious reason for that strength is that the clients who are part of Tradebank offer an unlimited variety of goods and

For 100 years the Iwig Family Dairy has been raising healthy cows and producing delicious, high quality milk for Kansas families. However, like many family farms and independent business owners, maintaining operations is a day to day financial struggle.

The shaky economy over the past few years hit the Iwig’s family farm and bottled milk production company especially hard this spring, and they were within hours of being forced to close. At the last minute though, their community rallied around the Iwigs and bought shares of stock in the company, which provided the capital necessary to meet the demands of the bank and the Farm Service Agency which had guaranteed their loan. The Iwigs also credit Tradebank as a contributing factor in helping the them keep their doors open. The Iwigs strategically use Tradebank Dollars to conserve their cash when they need it the most.

Last April, right in the middle of the Iwig’s efforts to literally save the family farm, Tim and Laurel Iwig met Nick Baumgartner, Regional Owner of Tradebank of Topeka. “We were in the midst of trying to raise funds and keep our farm and dairy operating when we met Nick. Nick and other local Tradebank members had to do some major convincing to us that accepting Tradebank Dollars would be beneficial. We needed cash money to pay bills and live. But my nephew was in Tradebank with his plumbing business and he helped to convince me that Tradebank could be used to increase cash sales,” explains Tim Iwig. “Ultimately, I decided to jump onboard with Tradebank because I wanted additional revenue to put into marketing to promote the offering of shares in the company,” Tim recalls. “But it has turned out to be an even greater benefit to us than we expected.”

“Nick went above and beyond to prove that Tradebank could be used to help preserve the company’s cash and save the business. One of the first things Nick did that convinced us that Tradebank would be beneficial to us was to acquire a new major customer for us,” Laurel says. “The restaurant he introduced us to was a new customer for our butter. In addition, because they were buying the butter in such a large supply it meant we had additional skim milk to sell (a by-product of making butter). Now, in addition to selling butter, we also had additional skim milk to sell, which created new cash sales for us as well.”

She elaborates, “Tradebank has helped us acquire new trade and cash customers for our dairy. We recently hosted a huge Centennial Celebration at Iwig Dairy and used Tradebank Dollars to pay for marketing and promotion, plus everything else required to have a wonderful community event.”

“Rather than paying cash to accomplish such an extensive event, nearly everything was paid using Tradebank: graphics, video production and new logo design were provided by Monte Cutshall of Cutshall Imaging, T-shirts were made by Oz Imaging; Huyett Printing and Topeka

Blueprint made bottle toppers for the stores which promoted the event and shares being sold; Robert Soria provided mobile DJ services at the event; Ditmer Digital & Design took event photos; Nick and Violet with Tradebank provided all the food; and Talon Communications handled the public relations and getting coverage on a local TV station; and the advertising was handled by Metro Voice and The Captial City Christian Chamber of Commerce,” Laurel recalls.

Both Tim and Laurel Iwig concur, “Tradebank has been a great decision for us, and we’re now using it not just to survive, but to expand our business with a new retail location on the other side of Topeka. We’re looking forward to a brighter future, and we’d like to thank those other businesses in Tradebank of Topeka for helping to support our business and help us continue providing the highest quality milk for another 100 years.”

While communication is key to successful trading; if you are interested in taking your trading to the next level, on-going communication becomes imperative. When you use Tradebank Dollars to purchase investment and income producing opportunities it takes the benefits of having Tradebank revenue to the next level beyond conserving your cash and improving your cash flow.

Tim and Laurel Iwig communicated their business objectives and challenges to their Regional Owner and Tradebank Broker, Nick and Violet Baumgartner, and by doing so they were able to utilizing Tradebank to solidify and expand their operations (see related story on page 7.)

When Deanna Spencer, Tradebank Broker in Columbus, Georgia heard that Dr. Tana Leidigh had a T$13,000 inventory of designer sunglasses she wanted to sell, Spencer notified Dr. Stephen Hollis, from Hollis Lasik about the purchasing opportunity. “I saw the purchase as an opportunity to expand the services I offer my Lasik patients and sell the sunglasses in my office which would turn Tradebank Dollars into cash,” Dr. Hollis explains.

Back in Orlando, Dr. Tara Leidigh was equally pleased with the results her Tradebank Broker Jacquie Oliver achieved for her in moving the sunglasses and generating the additional barter revenue she needed for her office expansion. “Dr. Ledigh mentioned that she had a good source for sunglasses and asked if I knew of anyone wanting to buy in large quantities. Of course I wasn’t going to pass up that opportunity and I began promoting them to all the Tradebank Brokers for clients across the country. Deanna was the first one with a buyer. She and I worked together to be sure both parties communicated and had their questions answered and finalized the transaction. That’s a Broker’s job, discovering and facilitating new trading opportunities for our clients. It’s the fun part of our jobs. If anyone else is looking to purchase designer sunglass just let me know,” Oliver relates.

Tradebank clients across our trading network recognize that incorporating Tradebank into their business expansions, investment opportunities, and new ventures is a shrewd way to gain a competitive edge and increase their net worth. Using the revenue generated from Tradebank sales allows our clients to complete projects on a larger scale than their cash resources may allow. Often these transactions exceed T$100,000. “While I have to respect my clients’ wishes of confidentially, I can tell you that we have several clients in our region right now who are each using over $T100,000 to expand their businesses. These clients are using Tradebank for architects, engineers, and contractors of all sorts. Furthermore, once their expansion and renovations are complete, they have formulated new marketing plans using Tradebank clients that include the PR, billboards, advertising and for the ad specialties needed to launch their new

ventures. In order to generate the trade revenue they need, we are heavily promoting their products and services throughout Tradebank,” says Ashby Green, Regional Owner for Tradebank of Metro Atlanta. “We work with clients on a routine basis and help them grow their business and facilitate and expedite larger projects. We do so because we have attracted clients who are capable of handling larger sales and have the support clients in place to assist them in using their new Tradebank revenue. That’s the beauty of Tradebank’s trading platform, we have barter opportunities for both large and small players,” explains Green.

Matt Hall, owner of Hall Properties has made investment lots available for sale through Tradebank of Wichita in order to generate the additional trade revenue to cover his Tradebank purchases. Hall has 23 lots left from a 101 property purchase he made in a new subdivision in Bentley, Kansas just outside Wichita. The lots have full infrastructure and are ready for new home construction. Lots range from $T1,000 to $T3000 each.

Tom Newman Enterprises in Orlando has an eight room motel in Starke, Florida available for sale at T$300,000. The motel has an existing on premise manager and positive cash flow. It is a turn key operation for someone looking for an income producing investment. Newman also has polyiso foam board insulation with the highest R value per inch of any insulation on the market, R-6.5, that he is selling by the semi load for T$27,000.

Marc Davis, the Regional Owner of Tradebank of Knoxville purchased two commercial buildings and an apartment complex in Cookeville, Tennessee valued at over $700,000 using a substantial portion of Tradebank Dollars as part of the purchase. “We have a client in Knoxville who recently purchased a turn key tanning facility using Tradebank Dollars. All our client had to do was wipe down the tanning beds and for T$35,000 her business was ready to go, complete with an existing customer base,” explains Davis.

Jurgen Mootz, Regional Owner of Tradebank of Chattanooga has several clients in his region who offer a plethora of property for sale. “For anyone with resources, buying property now is perfect timing. We all know the economy is cyclical and now we have motivated sellers.”

Leveraging the revenue you receive from Tradebank sales opens a whole new world of profitability and prosperity for you. While not every business owner is capable of handing high volume trade sales, many are and many more would be if they knew the opportunities available. Working closely with your Tradebank Brokers and Regional Owners as to what you have to sell and what you want to purchase further develop your barter options.

One of the many benefits of trading with Tradebank is that you are introduced to new trading opportunities from areas outside your local market. This not only provides you the opportunity to expand your customer base, but also to use Tradebank Dollars to purchase a greater variety of goods and services.

Andrew Muchmore, the new Regional Owner of Tradebank of Oklahoma City, is working diligently to build the Tradebank client base in his new region. He is doing so by contacting business owners with integrity and a solid reputation in the community. Furthermore, as Muchmore builds his area, he is seeking companies who offer goods and services that they can sell out of his region as well as locally. That’s why he approached his long time friend, Clifton Chrisman about joining Tradebank as one of the founding Tradebank clients in Oklahoma City.

Clifton Chrisman’s participation in Tradebank complements his business, Clifton’s Watch Hospital, and the entire Tradebank trading network since Chrisman already has customers across the country.

Time Is Money

Clifton’s Watch Hospital is a full service repair facility with all the equipment for any watch repair needed. Clifton has both individual consumers (think old broken heirloom family watches) and also does watch repairs for jewelry and antique stores and pawn shops. The timing was perfect for Chrisman to join Tradebank. “I knew that Clifton was the type of Tradebank client I wanted to represent and who I wanted to represent me and Tradebank. Trading through Tradebank is a natural expansion for Clifton’s Watch Hospital,” explains Muchmore.

For Chrisman time is money. Chrisman has been repairing watches for over 25 years and has been trading his whole career with retail and wholesale customers throughout the United States, but never through a barter exchange before. “In addition to being the authorized factory service center for Justex watches, we also do dial refinishing, Accutron repairs, make custom crystals, do vintage watch repairs including timing and regulating. We do water testing and proofing, battery repairs and service all brands of mechanical and quartz watches. We have vintage, pre-owned and new watches for sale as well,” explains Chrisman. “Trading through Tradebank will introduce me to new customers and generate additional revenue for me.”

We all know timing is everything and there is not a better time for Muchmore, Tradebank Regional Owners in all markets, Chrisman, and Tradebank clients throughout our trading network to expand and grow through Tradebank. Its time well spent to help each other grow and prosper using the benefits Tradebank offers.

“Empty hotel rooms mean lost revenue. I can’t operate without revenue. Tradebank brings in the additional revenue I need to improve my cash flow and still acquire the products and services I need.”

Roshan PatelPresident, Kasandas Properties, LLC

Owner of Comfort Suites with multiple locations in Georgia and Florida

Every empty hotel room or timeshare is revenue lost forever. Overhead expenses continue, however there is no going back or making up the void and reclaiming the lost income. Tradebank’s barter professionals assist you in maintaining maximum occupancy without resorting to deep discounting.

As a Tradebank client you are able to turn empty space into valuable purchasing power for everything from advertising to renovations to employee incentives.

Patel explains, “I am always looking for ways to conserve cash. As a Tradebank client I see new guests at my hotels and with that additional revenue I purchase printing, roofing, outdoor lighting, dry cleaning, landscaping, and will be using Tradebank to renovate my new hotel. I think everyone in the hospitality industry should include Tradebank in their business plan.”
