ONI PROJECT Transgender On-campus Nondiscrimination Information Significance and Need Over a third of trans students experience exclusionary, intimidating, offensive or hostile conduct at school. A similar number report seriously considering leaving their institution. Trans people are more likely to go to college, but 15% are forced to leave for harassment-related reasons. Currently existing resources are either outdated or focus on administrators; TONI provides a contemporary student voice that has previously gone unheard. What is TONI? The TONI Project is an online, user- generated resource for trans people to share information about policies and practices at colleges and universities across the country. Prospective students can use TONI to explore the schools they are applying to, and current students and allies can discover new ideas to transform their campuses. A prototype was built the following summer; this was used to secure funding for an outside developer and the first stages of outreach. An advisory panel of students and staff provided input on research areas and site design in summer and fall 2011. A second outside developer has been hired for ongoing improvements. Designed by Tonei Glavinic at American University in partnership with the National Center for Transgender Equality with funding from the David Bohnett Foundation Future Goals A deployment plan is currently in progress, with target dates of April 2012 for outreach to professional staff and August 2012 for students. We hope that this project will inspire student leaders to create change at their schools, and in the future the database will provide a rich source for research on policy outcomes and best practices in higher education for transgender students.
