New Members ...

Welcome to this Motley Crew!

Beginning with this issue of The Switchlist, we’ve added a new component to the “PNR News and Announcements” section. There you’ll find a listing of the newest members of the NMRA/PNR. This includes the member’s name, home town, and division. Welcome to all of you! We’re truly glad you’ve chosen to join this “motely crew.” Now if anyone takes offense in my using that term, I apologize (sort of). But wait. Don’t get too self-righteous because here is Wikipedia’s definition:

A motley crew is an informal expression for a roughly organized assembly of indi-viduals of various backgrounds, appearance, and character.

Don’t you veterans agree this seems to fit us pretty well, other than the fact that the PNR is far better than “roughly organized?” So, new members, your unique “...background, appearance, and character” will fit right in.

As part of this blanket PNR Welcome, I invite all current members to scan the New Members list for anyone in or near your home town and coor-dinate with your Division Superintendent to make the critical connection with these folks. You new members can also be proactive in this regard by letting your Superintendent know you’re interested in making these connec-tions. My personal experience reaching out to other PNR members (even in the relatively “quiet” part of the 5th Division where I live) has been really enriching and fun. I’ve discovered over the years that fellowship is an im-portant benefit of the NMRA (and this is coming from a self-proclaimed introvert).

Thanks to the efforts of the 2nd Division and its convention committee, PNR 2018 Stumptown Express was a big success. You’ll find a brief sum-mary of the convention’s key highlights beginning on page 3. The contest results and a few photos are also included.

On page 6, Jack Hamilton has provided a writeup of the 2018 PNR Pres-ident’s Award. Yes, two of your fellow members received the award this year!

Please be aware this is an election year for the PNR. Thanks to the ef-forts of Brian Stokes and the Nominations Committee, Jack, and others, we have candidates on the ballot. See Brian’s report on page 9 and Jack’s article on page 6. This includes a brief description of the election process and candi-dates’ statements. By the time of this newsletter’s posting, you should have already received a ballot, either an electronic version via email from Elec-tionBuddy or hard copy via postal service. Check your spam filter.

On behalf of all members, I’d like to thank President Jack Hamilton and Vice President Shirley Sample for their many years of dedication and service to the Region. Jack will continue on as PNR’s AP Chair and Shirley will re-main as the PNR Membership Chair. Many thanks again!

The 2019 PNR convention is being hosted by the 6th Division and it is already well along in the planning process. The dates are May 29–June 2 and the location will be the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort in Cranbrook, Brit-ish Columbia. The website is under construction.

Finally, since we’re in the middle of the perfect season for travel and train-watching, you’ll want to check out the Timetable on pages 17–18 and on the PNR website for upcoming model railroad and train-related events in and around the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Enjoy the last half of summer!

Convention Summary and Contest Results Jeff Shultz, David Holden, and John Sparrow, 2nd Division

It has been over a month since the PNR 2018 Convention was held in Portland, Ore-gon. Stumptown Express 2018 was indeed an action-packed 3-day event at a really nice ven-ue, the Red Lion on the River—Jantzen Beach. Final attendance figures showed a total of 146 participants. This included 123 full-fare and 4 single-day NMRA members, and 19 non-rail guests.

Highlights included 40 different clinics, including the increasingly popular “Open Clinic Multi-Session” Thursday evening, where participants could wander among 7 clinics being presented concurrently in same room. Please note that handouts from several clinics are now posted on the convention’s Events web page. Just scroll down through the list of clin-ics and click on the hotlink named “clinic handout.”

On Saturday, an extra fare Make ’n Take clinic, “Model Railroading with Arduinos,” showed modelers how to combine small, low-cost Arduino controllers, LEDs, servos, and other goodies to create many different working features for a layout, including a DCC base station that can interface with JMRI throttles and WIFI controllers. Model railroad author Dr. Geoff Bunza and his support team of “Arduino Elves” guid-ed participants through several hours of building a few basic projects. At the end, all were able to take their projects and ma-terials home to continue learning and applying this emerging technology in their modeling.

A visit to the Oregon Rail Heritage Center was the featured proto-type tour on Friday. And self-guided home and club layout tours were conducted over the course of two days throughout the greater Portland area — east side tours on Friday and west-side tours on Saturday.

The traditional convention banquet was held Saturday evening. The guest speaker was Doyle McCormack, a retired locomotive engineer and president of the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation. Doyle gave a fascinat-ing presentation on his current project of acquiring and restoring the last surviving Alco PA locomotive, the former Delaware & Hudson No. 18.

If this sounds like a fun time, it really was! So, we hope this is inspir-ing and we’ll all be able to join the 6th Division, host of the PNR 2019 convention in Cranbrook, British Columbia. Stay tuned as the planning continues.

This is the senior award presented by the Region and honors the recipient for their service to their fellow National Model Railroad Association members.

There are two honorees for the PNR 2018 President’s Award: Doug Wingfield of Sixth Division and Ed Schaenzer of First Division. Doug and Ed were both recognized at the 2018 Convention Banquet and presented an appropriate Letter of Recognition and a President’s Award plaque. The letters of recognition noted the specific contributions of each.

In recognition of their exceptional meritorious service to the Pacific Northwest Region and the National Model Railroad Association, Doug Wingfield, MMR, and Edward Schaenzer, MMR, are each presented with the Pacific Northwest Region President’s Award for 2018

Candidates for Election — PNR 2018 Jack Hamilton, MMR, President

This year the members of PNR will elect a new President and Vice President. The two incumbents (Jack Hamilton and Shirley Sample have declined nomination and will retire from service at the end of their terms on August 21, 2018. The elect-ed officers will assume their responsibilities effective September 1, 2018

The candidates put forward by your Nominations Committee are as follows:

President

Kurt Laidlaw – Fourth Division

HI, my name is Kurt Laidlaw and I am running for the position of President of the Pacific Northwest Region. I have always believed that it is important to give back to a group as much as you get out of it. Jack Hamilton made a fairly convincing argument to me at the PNR Convention in Portland that with the number of people we have in the region, it shouldn’t be that difficult to get a number of people to run for the regional offices. He told me the nominations committee had a list of 75 people they were calling for the presidency. I told him I would put my name in the bucket and lo and behold when they reached into the bucket there was a single sheet of paper so here I am. Jack Hamilton lies.

I have been an active member of the NMRA in the PNR 4th Division for close to 8 years. When I retired from the military-industrial complex I decided I needed something to fill a few hours of each week and thought model railroading would be a good choice. Little did I realize what I was getting into. I have served as a 4th division board member and assistant superinten-dent. I have helped organize the 4th division spring meet three times, and I was the contest chairman at the 2014 PNR Con-vention held in Tacoma, WA. I model in N scale (to keep Jack Hamilton happy) and am a member of the 4DNTRAK modu-lar group.

Trying to fill Jack’s shoes is going to be a tough assignment, but I know that with the help of the various division super-intendents and the PNR officers I will do my best to fulfill the responsibilities of the office and continue to make the PNR the region the rest of the country looks to for examples of how the keep members and make the hobby enjoyable for all.

Vice President

Bob Parrish, MMR – Third Division

I’m a lifelong modeler that was started out by my dad at age four. He modeled with a small group on the west side of Chicago in 1948. He moved me to HO in 1954 with some rolling stock that he had previously built.

I have modeled variously in S, O, HOn3 but mostly in HO. I am on my second around the room layout and am captivated by trolleys. A small about of time has been given to G scale also.

I have served on several different committees when the regional gatherings have been host-ed by the 3rd Division in Boise, Idaho.

Please Note: In addition to the candidates identified by the Nominations Committee, you will have the opportunity to make a “write in” choice.

Be sure to exercise your right to vote!

It doesn’t get any easier with the NMRA and PNR’s new electronic voting pro-cess (ElectionBuddy).

You should have already received an email with ballot in your inbox.

Every day is Flag Day! Bill and Sharon Fassett, 5th Division

Do you need some US flags on your layout that aren’t just plain rectangles, but look like they’re flying in the breeze? Here are some images that can help you out.

These images were made from a source online which was sized to be 5’ x 7’ in HO scale. Sharon played around with the image in Photo Shop to create the 2-sided flag images below. When printed, the images should be approximately 17.5 mm (11/16”) high at the center fold for a 5’ x 7’ flag.

1. We printed the images on 24-lb 96 bright paper, and Sharon used her Silhouette Cameo cutter to trim the images. Of course, your regular decal scissors can do this.

2. If you have a Silhouette Cameo cutter and email us at [email protected], we can send you the Silhouette print and cut file.

3. We folded the images around a loop of thread and glued the sides together with craft adhesive. In our case, the loop was about 5 cm in length to fit a 9-cm flag pole. (Fig. 1)

4. You can form the curves a couple of ways. Sharon spritzes the flag with water and forms the curves with a ball tool (McGill Paper Blossom Tool 6 mm). (Fig. 2) Or, you can just use your fingers to create the curves, with or without spritzing the flag.

5. We glued the loop and finished flag to our flag pole. (Fig. 3) We cut off the extra thread below the knot after gluing it to the pole. Our flag pole was made from 3/32” (2.4 mm) styrene tubing. At 9 cm it is approximately 26’ tall in HO scale.

Officers’ Reports

From the President’s Outbox Jack Hamilton, MMR

A major thank you to Charlie Comstock and the Second Division convention crew. I had a great time in Portland and, based on my discussions with those in attendance, so did most everybody else. If you were not there but want to get a flavor of what went on, find one of the people who participated in Geoff Bunza’s Arduino clinic. The banquet provided an oppor-tunity to recognize two of PNR’s best (see article nearby) and to conduct a great auction. A “Well Done” to all.

In my last message, I spent a bit of time talking about the apparent lack of interest by members to fill essential Region (and Division) leadership positions. I addressed the same issue at the General Membership Meeting in Portland. When I asked how many of the members in attendance had served in positions of leadership or management in their professional lives, all of the hands went up. I followed that question up with another—“If you were able to do that in your professional life and earn a living, what makes you think you are not qualified for leadership in PNR?” That line of logic remains as we press forward trying to get members to become more active and take a part in making this outfit work for all of us. We have our candidates for this election cycle but certainly not the numbers that we tried for. Now is the time for all of us to reconsid-er our role in the Association and to make a personal commitment to become more involved and active.

Regarding the election process, the Board has discussed switching to electronic balloting for two years and agreed to make the switch last year. Following the success (yes there were some problems) with the NMRA electronic balloting, our (PNR) election will be by electronic ballot this year. The system (ElectionBuddy) will be used to send an electronic ballot to every voting member with an email address on file. A paper ballot will be mailed to those voting members who do not have an email address and to any member whose email rejects the electronic ballot. The difference in cost between the all-paper ballot (about $1200 and lots of man hours) and the electronic/paper ballot ($450 and a lot fewer man hours) makes the tran-sition appropriate. We will advise all electronically attached members when ballots go out so we can avoid missing someone. It is essential that every member receiving a ballot return that ballot. This is the only way to determine if the system is working and that members who should have received a ballot did receive that ballot. We cannot make it much easier to vote but we do need your support.

This is my last Switchlist message to you as PNR President. I want to thank all of the individuals who have so generously given of their time and effort to serve as Division Superintendents, Region Officers and Committee members, and filling all of the management and leadership positions throughout the Region. You have made a difference for all of us and have made my job much easier. I want to especially thank Shirley Sample who has never failed to answer the call to duty or to always act in the very best interest of the Region and our members. No one could have done the job Shirley has done for us as well and with that ever present smile. While I complete my service as your President, I plan to remain involved in the operation and management of programs in the Region and the delivery of services to our members (the new President will make that choice). I am also considering additional service on the national level to use up some of my “spare” time. I have great appre-ciation for the individuals who have agreed to follow after Shirley and me. I know both of the members and am familiar with their skills and dedication. I am confident that PNR will continue to grow and prosper under their leadership and guidance.

Office Manager’s Report Ed Liesse

This report to the Members of the Pacific Northwest Region, NMRA, covers the months of May 2017 through June 2018.

You can see by looking at the figures in Tables 1–4 what's happening with the membership of the Region. Our member-ship actually improved slightly over the last year, but we lost members during the summer months before we started adding members again around December. Vacations and summer activities, plus fewer Division activities, seem to pull the member-ship down. We need to look at what we can do to get Fall Division activities publicized as early as we can to draw in potential new members. Then, let's get these new members active and involved to make them feel welcome and wanted!

numbers are Family members and Students, which is good! Unfortunately, we did lose eighteen active members to death.

We also have a large number of Inactive members within the Region. We need to look through these lists of Inactive members and see what we can do to re-energize them to return to the hobby and re-activate their membership. Admittedly, there might be a number of these members who have passed away and we never received notification of their death. Howev-er, there are many that could be potential "Re-rails" if we would take the time to contact them and maybe find out why they didn't renew their membership. We might learn some new things we could be doing that would help in retaining new (and old) members.

Remember, Membership retention is the job of every member!

Much of this report centers (Table 1 through Table 4) on the relationship when individuals come on board as a new member and the time they go on the 30-60-day Past Due Reports. Look at the tables to see how your Division is performing. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Nominations Committee Report Brian Stokes, Chair

The work of the Nominations Committee has been completed for the time being, with two candidates for office put for-ward for your consideration. The candidate names and their statements are in the “PNR News and Announcements” section on page 9.

A big thank you to Charlie Hutto and Gary Thurow for their work on the committee, and to all of you who didn't screen our repeated phone calls, considered running for office, or helped with suggesting members you knew who would make great officers. A big thanks to Jack and Shirley as outgoing officers for their dedication and great work. Until next time!

The Switchlist — August 2018 15

1st Division Rich Pitter, Superintendent

First Division held a mini-meet on June 30 at the Gainsborough community clubhouse in Eugene. The focal point of the mini-meet was a Make & Take hands-on workshop led by Ed Schaenzer, MMR, which provided instructions, parts, and tools for participants to build track cleaning cars, specifically the abrasive strips for user-supplied HO or On30 freight cars. Ed also provided a detailed instruction sheet and guided people through the steps to prepare the Masonite drag strips, attach the guides and abrasive strip, and drill holes in the freight car underbody. Twelve people built the abrasive strips.

The meeting included a presentation by Juanita Metzger of Eugene-Cascades-Coast, the Lane County tourist group. First Division will host the PNR 2020 Convention in Eugene on April 21-24, 2020, at the Valley River Inn, during the week immediately preceding the Willamette Cascade Model Railroad Group's 32nd Annual Swap Meet and Train Show. The show provides an excellent opportunity for modelers throughout the Pacific Northwest Region to attend the convention, since the show has 270-plus tables of vendors from states throughout the West and operating model railroad layouts of several scales. Eugene-Cascades-Coast is paid for by hotel and motel room taxes. They are working with First Division as liaison with the hotel and with merchants and industries in the county.

The mini-meet also included a People's Choice Model Contest and several display-only models. Ed Schaenzer, MMR, discussed some of his display-only models that had previously won awards at the regional level, describing the attributes of models that enhanced their scores.

The Make & Take was a big hit with participants and several people had ideas of make & take workshops they could lead on various topics. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2nd Division Jeff Shultz, Superintendent

2nd Division had two major events this past quarter: hosting the 2018 PNR Regional Convention (Stumptown Express) in Portland, Oregon, and electing a new Division Superintendent (Jeff Shultz) and Secretary (Richard Kurschner). Outgoing Superintendent, Charlie Comstock, is thanked for his efforts in leading the recruiting and scheduling of clinics during both the 2015 Daylight Express NMRA National Convention and the 2018 Regional Convention, as well as his creation and man-agement of the convention website. Dave Holden, 2018 Regional Convention Chair, and the 2nd Division’s Secretary and Treasurer, will continue as its Treasurer. Goals for the coming quarter include establishing a more regular event schedule and ensuring our members who are located further away from our two primary metro areas are still benefiting from their mem-berships. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3rd Division Jerry R. Thomas , Superintendent

The 3rd Division has continued to meet throughout the summer with monthly business meetings and mini-meets. Busi-ness meetings have been enhanced by the addition of “20 Pictures,” which gives members a chance to share their interests with the group (credit to superintendent emeritus Tom Waters). Our mini-meets enable us to see layouts in various stages, adding to our edification and enjoyment. At our June mini-meet, we visited the Canyon County Historical Society in Nampa. A Union Pacific caboose was opened to the public for the first time after a major restoration. Long time NMRA Pacific PNR 3rd Division member Worth Montgomery was commended for the many hours he spent helping to restore the interior of the caboose.

Looking ahead, our group is planning a mini-meet in the Twin Falls–Jerome area in September. Our members have ex-pressed a desire to widen our outreach from our present Treasure Valley base. Our Fall Meet has been moved to October 20th at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Boise. This move was predicated by the church’s availability.

Wishing everyone a wonderful summer and fall and don’t hesitate to email me your questions and concerns. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4th Division Russ Segner, Superintendent

No report this quarter. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5th Division Bill Fassett, Superintendent

As we enter the dog days of summer, it is not uncommon for things to slow down as families turn to vacations and con-ventions. Division 5 was represented at Stumptown Express in Portland over the first weekend in June, and we send our congratulations to the folks in Division 2 for a great meeting!

The most recent event in the Division that drew the interest of our members was the Annual Speeder Days in Potlatch, Idaho, on July 14, sponsored by the WI&M Railway History Preservation Group.

Our very active Free-Mo group members are already gearing up for the Alberta Free-Mo meet August 15-18 in Big Val-ley, Alberta.

The first fall show in Division 5 will be in Missoula on September 15, and we may be able to announce some Division 5 events in connection with that show.

Finally, the Division is home to a new hobby shop which opened the first week in June in Spokane Valley. Valley Trains & Models, LLC, is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (www.valleytrains.com). Its owners are NMRA members.

6th Division Ed Molenkamp, Superintendent

Greetings from the 6th Division. It has been a busy Spring/Summer in the 6th Division. Division events have been well attended. We just finished up our Spring meet in the Crowsnest Pass area and it was awesome! The clinics/layout tours in Lethbridge went well and the prototype tours went very well, too, even in the rain. We had a presentation by Riversdale Re-sources on the new coal mine being planned for the area.

Membership in the 6th Division continues to grow, which is encouraging.

The committee is starting to put together the upcoming 2019 PNR convention, Kootenay Express. It will be located in Cranbrook, British Columbia, and the dates are May 29–June 2, 2019. There will be regular emails sent out very soon.

Have a good summer! _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7th Division John Martin, Superintendent

I hope you’re having a great Summer and managing to stay cool. Maybe more time in the train room, out of the sun, is exactly what you need to stay healthy!

There has been little activity in our area over the last few months, though the Vancouver Train Expo folks continue preparations for VTEX 2018 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Nov 10th and 11th.

Thank You. Our sincere thanks to everyone involved in making Stumptown Express such a success. We greatly enjoyed the Convention and the extensive and varied program you put together. Well done.

Long time NMRA member John Green has written an excellent piece for our Division’s newsletter about his experiences in Portland. You can read it by going to our website at http://7divpnr.ca/ and clicking on “Bulletin Board” in the header. It’s the 2018 July issue. You should seriously consider attending next year’s event.

Kootenay Express 2019 will be hosted by the 6th Division (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories) and to make travel easier for everyone, especially our friends in the USA, they’ve chosen to stage the convention in Cranbrook British Columbia. Visit http://7divpnr.ca/ for details or check out the PNR website. Hope to see you there – tentatively May 28th to June 2nd 2019.

Constitution and Bylaws. The membership has now approved our new Constitution and Bylaws (required by the BC Govt). One of the biggest improvements is the ability to conduct electronic elections. Many thanks to Ken Rutherford and Steve Stark for their hard work to produce the documents. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Vancouver Train Expo 2018 Tom Lundgren, 7th Division

Planning for Vancouver Train Expo 2018, November 10–12, is well underway. Attendance at last year’s show, the 35th, was just under 6,000, an increase of 18% over 2017’s attendance, and 220% since the move to the 44,000 square foot PNE Forum in northeast Vancouver, British Columbia. The response from large operating model railways for this year’s event has been great. It will be a challenge to fit them all in!

In addition to displaying fine modeling work, the show is intended to be an attraction for families with close to 80% of the attendees being adults or families with children. Exhibitors include model railway groups displaying models and operating displays in all scales, retail and private vendors, special interactive displays for children, including mini train rides, manufac-turers, and the national passenger rail provider VIA Rail Canada. This year, we have initiated a contest, a challenge to model-lers to build and display models of local railway-themed scenes, scenes that public attendees will recognize and relate to.

You are invited to attend and we hope to see you!
